2 Huge Things

1. The Rotation

The playsets, schemes, and counters are all out of the bag. Who plays and for how long is Mark Daigneault's ace in the hole.

Empty the tank

Here's our standard "likely starters" table, based on availability and the most recent choices by both head coaches:

OKCSAS
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Jared McCain
Luguentz Dort
Chet Holmgren
Isaiah Hartenstein
De'Aaron Fox
Stephon Castle
Devin Vassell
Julian Champagnie
Victor Wembanyama

There's no mystery about who will suit up. Ajay Mitchell's soleus strain ended his series in Game 3. Jalen Williams' brief, rocky return in Game 6 confirmed his series was as good as over in Game 2. Both Thunder playmakers are out, and the Spurs are fully healthy:

OKCSAS
Jalen Williams - OUT (Left Hamstring)
Ajay Mitchell - OUT (Right Calf Strain)
Thomas Sorber - OFS (Right Knee Surgery)
David Jones Garcia - OFS (Right Ankle Surgery)

After Game 1, I was calling for Oklahoma City's best players to eat up more minutes against San Antonio's best. Now that Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell are out, the Thunder can't play their best units at all. But they can start, extend, and finish with the best of who's left.

Four of the five Spurs starters have played more than 200 minutes this series. Only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has crossed that threshold, matching Victor Wembanyama's total (222). Wemby is averaging 8 more minutes per game than he did in the regular season. Only Shai (28) and Jared McCain (27) were on the court for 26 or more minutes in Game 6. For a battered team in a brutal playoff series, the Thunder are still about as fresh as they could hope.

Mark Daigneault's deep, chaotic rotation has mostly proven to be an advantage throughout the conference finals. If he tightens that up in a Game 7 victory, I'd still credit his Games 1 thru 6 approach for keeping his powder dry.

As a bonus: Mitch Johnson will give heavy minutes to his most trusted six players, but he's unlikely to put super sub Dylan Harper in with his starters. De'Aaron Fox has been helpless, and Harper has been best at home. If the Thunder manage to pull ahead against the Spurs Plan A, things will be looking very good for OKC the rest of the way.

Even if it stays close.

The Thunder and Spurs have played 16 clutch minutes in the series, most of which came during Game 1's double overtime thriller. San Antonio has scored one more point in winning time than Oklahoma City due to better foul drawing and rebounding; OKC has shot better from three and overall, and they've doubled up the Spurs in forced turnovers, blocks, and steals. If this game is close, at home, with the Clutch Player of the Year and OKC's stable of fresher, feistier, and more experienced players revved up, it will be squarely on Wemby's shoulders to outwork the Thunder with the NBA world watching. If he has enough in the tank for another Game 1-like performance (when he played a career high 49 minutes), we'll tip our hat as he joins the halls of legendary players. Otherwise, OKC should be okay in Shai's hands.

Ditch Dort

While Daigneault's overall rotation has gotten the job done, his starting lineups have continued to falter. I've not been in a rush to speculate about Lu Dort's contract status this summer nor to compare his starting role to Kendrick Perkins, circa the 2012 Finals. But it's hard to ignore that analogy now:
