KD’s new episode of 35th Hour is out and while it’s not the most fascinating thing ever — at least compared to the interesting responses he gave in the last one — it does give some nice behind-the-scenes looks at his Nike commercial promoting the “Back for the Future” campaign.
I have no idea what he’s saying here, but he definitely has the presentation down. Mic cocked just right, using the off-hand to play up the crowd and saying words fast in rhythm.
And let me tell you who seems to be loving it: Russell Westbrook.
A lot of the Thunder’s players are in Lexington working out at the University of Kentucky. While there, a bunch of the players went to a Kentucky football practice, ran some plays with the Wildcats and threw around that odd-shaped ball.
Kind of swapping roles, Kevin Durant played quarterback as Russell Westbrook lined up at wideout. And Westbrook, who said he could make a pretty good NFL receiver or defensive back, does his part, beating his man pretty easily after a quick jam on the line. Durant drops back and lobs one high, but overshoots Westbrook enough that even he can’t run under it.
I’d say the reason for it was KD’s mechanics. A little bit of the short-armed, side-arm style motion. Who taught him how to throw like that? Vince Young?
Kevin Durant led the way with 48 points in Chris Paul’s charity game in Winston Salem, North Carolina Saturday night. He was joined by LeBron, Dwyane Wade, CP3, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry, Rudy Gay, Carmelo Anthony and a few other NBAers.
And during it, rocked a few nasty dunks including an Eastbay, a between-the-legs and a fairly ridiculous oop from Stephen Curry.
After the game, KD tweeted: “be on the lookout for a game in OKC in mid October! You know I couldn’t leave loud city out the mix!” But don’t root for that to happen though. Because that only goes down if the lockout’s still in place.
Morning Thunderers. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. One, two, three… season!
In KD’s newest 35th Hour, he tackles all the “controversies” that have popped up this summer. Tattoos, team hats, razzing OU and whatever else.
KD summed it up pretty simply about rooting against OU. “I went to Texas and OU’s like our biggest rival and I want OU to lose.” What’s the big deal with that? On wearing a Bulls hat, basically, KD just said he wore it because it looked good. And the tattoos, well, he explains them all. Note: The “W” is NOT for Wisconsin.
You may have asked why KD hasn’t inked his arms. Some saw it for business purposes, but KD said his mom told him not to, and we all know KD does what Wanda says. He also said that he’s saving his arms for a future wife and kids. All together now: Aww.
The lesson here: If you’re complaining about KD’s tattoos, him ripping on OU or him wearing a Bulls hat, you should feel a little stupid right now.
KD gave us all a nice parting gift too. “I’m OKC until they don’t want me no more man. I want to be there the rest of my career. Point blank.” As long as he says stuff like that, he could wear a Texas football helmet in public for all I care.
Morning Thunderers. Thank you for your support of DT. Shine on.
A little bonus clip from KD’s newest episode of 35th Hour. One thing you need to take from it. KD says, “My goal is to be one of the greatest to ever play the game.” Well on your way, young man.
Kevin Durant’s second episode of “35th Hour” is out and besides showing how hard he goes at it in the gym, how hard he goes at it shopping in the mall and how hard he goes at it bowling with friends, we get to see some really cool behind-the-scenes stuff from the legendary Melo-Goodman showdown. That’s where Durant and LeBron James went head-to-head and Durant came out with 55 points though LeBron came out with the victory.
Durant said of the game, “I’ve got so much respect for LeBron. I think he’s probably the best player in the league. Him and Kobe are kind of neck and neck for the best player in the league. It’s my opportunity to get better so I had to take advantage of it.”
(The little reuninon with Uncle Jeff will bring a tear to your eye.)
The title of the episode is “Hard work beats talent.” Which could be seen as a minor dig at LeBron since KD put on a show against him, but really, it’s just Durant’s favorite saying. He said it the night he was drafted and he says it often otherwise. And there’s no doubt — while KD’s got the talent, he definitely works hard.
Spain won Eurobasket over France yesterday with Serge Ibaka contributing five blocks. Pretty good game for old Iblocka, eh? Well consider this: Those five blocks came in the first half and to one up that, they came in an eight-minute span.
Ibaka entirely changed the game because of his defensive work. This isn’t anything all that new to Thunder fans (his nine blocks against the Nuggets in Game 5 come to mind quickly), but it’s always fun to watch a little Iblocka Party.
Morning Thunder. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. Give me basketball or give me death.
Russell Westbrook is the Honey Badger. Some Thunder fans nicknamed him that and when you watch this video (alert: rough language), it makes a lot of sense. And for some reason — maybe coincidentally, maybe not — honey badgers are in the new NBA Jam.
Spain advanced to the gold medal game of Eurobasket 2011 with a 92-80 win over Cinderella story Macedonia. Serge Ibaka, who has had a pretty nice tournament off the bench for Spain playing behind Marc and Pau Gasol, added 11 points and four rebounds. This play accounting for two of those points and one of those rebounds.
Please let me see this in person in November. Please.
It’s easy to forget that Reggie Jackson is even on the roster. A lot of people ask me, “So if James Harden starts, who comes off the bench and scores?” I think the obvious answer is, Reggie Jackson is supposed to. I’m not entirely certain of what his position or official role will be, but obviously he’s got some kind of place on this team. Maybe it means Eric Maynor (or Russell Westbrook) are expendable in the future, or maybe it’s just Sam Presti doing what he does and stockpiling talent.
Morning Thunderers. Thank you for your support of DT. Say a little lockout prayer today.
NBA 2K11 was a pretty amazing game. So naturally you’d have to assume 2K12 would be fairly excellent as well. And judging by the trailer for it, I’d say it will be. What impresses me most about it is the attention to detail. Like Derrick Rose’s jab-step, step-back jumper really looks like Derrick Rose’s jab-step, step-back jumper. Notice Russell Westbrook’s dunk later in the trailer. It really looks like a vintage Russell Westbrook angry one-handed dunk. 2K12 looks so good that even if there isn’t a season, it’ll serve as a somewhat decent alternative.
Great Scott, Nike has done it. They’ve made the shoes from Back to the Future. And best of all, they’ve done it for great reasons.
Beginning, well, yesterday, 1,500 pairs of the new Nike Mag shoes will be auctioned off on Ebay with the auctions benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.
And to help promote it, Nike’s put out this little video featuring Bill Hader, KD and Christopher Lloyd. For a kid that pretty much knelt and worshiped Back to the Future and thought Marty McFly was the coolest kid ever to kiss his mother, this video basically has it all. KD, the DeLorean, actual shoes from Back to the Future II — it’s, well, heavy.
