Tuesday Bolts – 3.6.12

Designer of KD’s shoes, Leo Chang, talks about working with Durant: “He may not be interested in the numbers and some stuff, but when it comes to design, he loves it. He really focuses in and gives us a lot of insight. Each year, we get more and more from him, too. He understands the shoe process a little bit more. Last summer we actually went to China, and he had the chance to see his shoes being made. That was an eye-opener for him, so getting to experience that with him, like “See how they’re making that right there,” it was a great education on how sneakers are made for him. Most people just assume—like he even said, “Oh, I thought you just a press a button and the shoe comes out,” so it was a really good experience, and I think he learned a lot. We continue to kind of help him out with that.”

NBA.com power rankings: “OKC has the league’s second-most efficient offense despite the highest turnover rate, thanks to free throws and shots in the paint. They got to the line on Saturday in Atlanta, but struggled in the paint (13-for-29), putting the spotlight on their 21 turnovers in one of their worst offensive games of the season.”

Marc Stein of ESPN.com’s rankings: “Perhaps we made his All-Star Weekend scoring outburst sound a little too inevitable. Before Durant’s MVP-clinching 36 points, then his 38 on Thursday night to power OKC’s come-from-behind win over the Magic on TNT, KD averaged just 15.3 ppg on 31.8 percent shooting in four previous games in Orlando.”

OKC has climbed to third in Hollinger’s rankings.

You almost assuredly don’t care, but I did an interview with 20 Something Magazine.

Jeff Caplan of ESPN Dallas: “The Mavs couldn’t secure their first winning streak since mid-February as they lost for a sixth time in eight games and dropped to 22-17. In the bigger picture, Dallas lost the season series to OKC, 3-1, but it was far more even than the ledger indicates. The Thunder needed a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from Durant in the first meeting, and OKC and certainly had all kinds of trouble separating from Dallas on this night.”

Jeff Van Gundy on TrueHoop TV.

Zach Lowe of SI.com properly notes to watch for the Grizzlies: “The Grizz have survived, but they are not a threat to do real damage in the Western Conference in this state. A healthy Randolph makes them a threat. It’s popular to suggest the Grizz might be better off with just one of the Randolph/Gay duo, since Memphis made its playoff run last season without Gay. But that’s hogwash. The Grizzlies, even with Randolph doing his superman act of last season, need perimeter offense badly, and they don’t get enough of it without Gay around creating shots and drawing attention. Go back and watch the Memphis-Oklahoma City series from last season, and you’ll see the Thunder happily ignoring just about every Memphis perimeter player in order to crash down on the Grizz big men. Teams can’t do that to the seem degree when Gay is available.”

Matt Moore of CBSSports.com: “The Thunder won the free throw differential, again. The Thunder had some bizarre offensive possessions again. But when the Thunder absolutely needed to shut down the Mavericks, they did. The defense for OKC has come miles in the last three weeks. They blanketed Dirk and disrupted Dallas’ playsets enough to completely block out any chance of a miracle tying bucket. They allowed too many Dirk Nowitzki threes early in the fourth, but their recovery down the stretch was championship level.”

Kurt Helin of PBT: “There are moments this season when you think maybe Dallas — or at other times the Spurs or Lakers or Clippers — could challenge the Thunder in the West. But when you watch OKC closing out close games with great defense and two of the best pure scorers in the game, you have to question that. You can pick apart the end-of-game Thunder sets or whatever you want, but nobody has this package of players. They are the best team in the West and legit title contenders. Unless somebody makes a big move before the March 15 trade deadline, it’s hard to see anyone else coming out of the West.”

Jason Kidd thinks the Mavs are entitled to calls because they won a title: “We don’t get the benefit of the whistle,” Kidd said. “I don’t think we’re looked upon as champions, but that’s a whole other story. Dirk (Nowitzki) should live at the line if they would call it the way it’s supposed to be. But, he doesn’t.”

Rick Carlisle the same: “I’m in disbelief that there was a foul call on Mahinmi,Carlisle said. “I just watched the play five times; I mean it’s a block. It’s an enormous play. And then Nowitzki gets hit on the arm at the other end and there’s no call. So, I’m at a loss. I apologize for that.”

Darnell Mayberry: “Looks like I’m going to have to be the one to tell the Fox Sports Oklahoma crew to cut it out with the courtside interviews during close ballgames. Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire fame sat down with Brian Davis and Grant Long during the second quarter tonight. The Thunder was up 28-25 and yet another meaningless interview was being conducted. Add Bailey to the list of Jim “J.R.” Ross and others who have, for reasons only God knows, joined the broadcast team to serve as only an interruption to what is undoubtedly the most entertaining show in basketball.”

The Mavs just really don't like losing to the Thunder do they? ESPN Dallas seems to like their chances because of a buzzer beater 3 by the best closer in the league (hmm amazing, he made the shot. Yeah he never does stuff like that...) and a close loss on the road? Look, it was 4 points. This game didn't come down to the last second. Mavs lost. Give Dirk that foul, say he hits 2FTS, Mavs still lose by 2. And ffs, KD and Russ went a combined 12-38! If anyone is bitching it should be OKC. Is Dirk still not afraid of any team in the West? Because he should be now. Aside from any Maverick-magic against the Thunder OKC is just simply better. And that wasn't the case last year. I could also see San Antonio sweeping a 7 seed Mavs team before they even think about playing OKC in the playoffs. You got your trophy Dallas, give it a rest. It's rebuilding time.

Lol the NBa Trade Machine, said the Lakers were actually worse off trading Bynum Gasol, and Blake, for Howard, Davis, and Nelson. It showed the lakers losing two more games, and the Magic staying the same. Obviously the machine isn't so accurate but its funny that it gave that result. If the Magic we're planning on blowing their team up, and just waiting till everyones contracts expires to have free cap space, then i can see them doing that Ellis trade. That would be sending Jrich, Hedo and Howard to Golden state, and Ellis, Biedrins, and Kwame going to Orlando with a pick. Maybe a third team could be involved.

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

It would be pretty stupid however if Orlando did that considering they're the third in the east. But i just don't see what kind of good can come to Golden State for doing that. I mean other then Reddick, and Anderson, i really doubt golden wants Rich, or Hedo. Horrific contracts. Orlando really doesn't want to give up JJ or Anderson either. i say no trade happens and Orlando just straights up lose D12 as a free agent. His mom said he's staying, but no one said for how long.

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

Honestly though the Lakers seem like they're the only team that can make a strong push for Howard, even then i think Orlando would do slightly better, but the Lakers wouldn't. I mean who else can make a good offer? Golden State? the pieces they want, Orlando doesn't want to give up, so that would mean trading Howard, which why blow up the team when your third in the east, why not just get better. I don't see how Ellis can make them better either. What the Knicks? they're invested in Chandler, Stad, and Melo now, and now this whole Linsanity crap. Dallas? i don't think the Magic unless they want to be decently good for a short time, and want to blow up would do a trade. Who would the Mavs give? their core players are old, and will start fading soon. They're showing signs already. Nets can't do it without giving up Dwill, Chicago maybe can but i think they're really doing well with what they have. Heat sure as hell can't do it. So i mean who else?? Am i missing a team here that Dwight might have mentioned that has showed an intrest in him? No matter what trade happens it has to do with Orlando giving the season and any title hopes what so ever up for the near future. I mean lets say they do take Bynum, and Gasol. Gasol is 31 years old, and has that contract on lock for about 3 years. He's not ganna be the same player in two years. Bynum is 24 and a good pick up, but then what? Niether one of those two are the franchise type players that'll help you win a title. All Stars yes, but not the way Dwight is. I think we have a better chance at getting him then many of these teams maybe except the Wars, or Lakes. Even then thats not going to happen. Dwight leaves on free agency end of story!! Rant over!

James Harden's value is highly under rated. He is the balance and harmony to this team. We already have a silky, smooth KD and a dynamic, flashy RW, and when they're both on....well, we see they results: OKC can be pretty unstoppable. But when teams key on one of these guys, or when one of them has an off night, which they are rightfully due sometimes, the Beard can fill in either one of these roles and give us that 1-2 combo that usually spells doom to other team on any given night. And some nights when KD and Westbrook are on top of their game, they can catch a breath knowing that Harden and company can continue the flow.

f5alcon 1021 pts

justSTUit well last night all 3 were off and we won

justSTUit 5 pts

f5alcon  Yeah, I like the fact that our "big" three didn't play well, but we are learning to "will" ourselves to win, like all those championship teams can do on their off nights. We are a totally different team than last year with almost the same players, minus Maynor (who would make us deadly), but we have a swagger this year...

easto9 11 pts

What did anyone think of that crazy inbounds play at the end of the game!? Personally i thought it was pretty cool

f5alcon 1021 pts

easto9 yeah, i was like what is harden up to standing in the corner like that

Lost Ones 679 pts

easto9 it was gamble... could have went terrible considerin dallas trapped him instead of fouling.

courtsense 1289 pts

Lost Ones Agreed...thought it was dumb, especially when Harden dribbled to the corner at halfcourt and got stuck and had to force a sideline pass to KD.

 I second what she said.

SammyThunderer 1300 pts

easto9 Nice idea, nearly disastrous execution. Russ or KD needed to run back to help Harden out once Dallas started trapping. James was in danger of committing an 8s and needed to throw a crazy precarious pass that if slightly off would have gone out of bounds or been stolen.

Jax Raging Bile Duct 452 pts

SammyThunderer  easto9 If James had been paying any attention at all, Serge was by himself under the basket with no defender within the 3 point line. He was so wide open that no one could see him.

SammyThunderer 1300 pts

Jax Raging Bile Duct  easto9 I'll have to take another look, but it seems like that would have been a pretty long pass in danger of being intercepted.

ILikePancakes 1913 pts

Meh. I already knew that KD isn't the smartest guy on the planet when he said that Drake is the best rapper.

Lol i still love the guy anyways

OBoymuzik 1861 pts

so now we have "The Call" and "THE CALLS OF CHAMPIONS"

OBoymuzik 1861 pts

yeah so i think arguing that Mahinmi didn't foul and expecting "the calls of champions" is kind of an oxymoron

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

 OBoymuzik

It was their fault for putting us in the bonus. I honestly think we didn't even take advantage of being in the bonus during the fourth. If we really wanted to we could have made it an obbsession to break their zone with some ball movement or by trying to drive it in through a good screen. Just saying i don't think we really took advantage of the bonus the way other teams do.

OBoymuzik 1861 pts

ElMexiThunder I don't think we attacked enough last night in general, Im sure KD was reluctant after turning it over 35 times an i think Russels ankle is still slowing him down a bit even if he doesn't say so

Lost Ones 679 pts

OBoymuzik  ElMexiThunder KD was awful last night, he damn near lost us the game in crunch time.

Lost Ones 679 pts

Whens the next time we play the clippers? we need to embarrass them like they did us straight run them off the floor. 4qtrs of solid defense.

Lost Ones 679 pts

ATH This is what i dont understand why do we wait to the last 5 mins to focus on D? this has to be a byproduct of coaching or... plain ass laziness

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

 Lost Ones  ATH

Coaching, Coaching, and some more Coaching. I don't know how, but if Sam P has to get on his knees to do it, then so be it. We need Adams back. Remember when we played D for 48 minutes two seasons ago, but our offense was attrocious? Still the same attrocious ball movement, just our talent alone is winning the games, with some last minute lock down D. Seriously we need to wake the F up.

neo12 287 pts

ElMexiThunder  Lost Ones  ATH what would it take to get adams back

Lost Ones 679 pts

I don't either but its nice to dream isn't it?

neo12  kidnap his children and hold them hostage until he agrees to come here? even offering him head coach and a boatload of money probably won't do it.

SammyThunderer 1300 pts

Wow, was looking at Lakers salaries. I know all the trade rumors are surrounding gasol, but at some point they got to look at trading kobe, i know its sacrilegious, but crazy numbers.  I think with hard cap coming into play, teams can't be built on veteran superstars anymore.  I'm glad we got a young core at reasonable salaries for next 5 years.

11/12:  Kobe: 25mil  Gasol: 19mil

12/13:  Kobe: 28mil  Gasol: 19mil

13/14:  Kobe: 30mil  Gasol: 19mil

Lost Ones 679 pts

neo12 Kobe has a no trade clause

neo12 287 pts

Lost Ones ouch.. lakers are screwed

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

 neo12  Lost Ones

I actually think the Lakers still woudln't win anything if they gave up Gasol, and Bynum for D12 to be honest. Their biggest hole has been and always will be PG. Considering that the leagues strongest position now is hands down the PG, they would still get did every night from a great PG. They wouldn't have  They would have to pick up some PF for the a vet salary, that wouldn't really do much, and still have no bench. The only win they get out of this is they'll have to best C in the league, whos still considerablly young, and can rebuild around him. Problem is, that Kobe's contract will make that rather difficult, Lakers or not.

anonymous12345 343 pts

 neo12  Lost Ones

They could amnesty him, but that'll never happen.  From what has come out about how their front office is now run since the Buss' kid took over, Kobe is the least of their worries.

Playing around with the trade machine, the way i was able to come up with us getting D12 was by trading Harden, Perkins, and Aldrich which if you ask me would be kinda a lopsided trade in a way. Considering that aside from Harden no one else even seems worth a danm. Don't get me wrong i like KP, but theres no comparison between the two. That would be us +6 more wins, but apperently the trade machine says Orlando would be worse off. We would also have to take some one like Q Richardsons conract on. In reality, we would have in order for the baskeball gods to allow it, is to give up Westbrook, Kendrick and Ibaka I think we all know that aint happening, but if by all chance that Presti is finding a way to get howard by only giving up Harden, out of our main 4 that would be such a huge deal!!! Then however we'de obviously wouldn't have the money to keep any of our role players once their contracts expire including Ibaka, unless Howard signs for less, and in which place means some under the table stuff is going on.

Lost Ones 679 pts

ElMexiThunder I think at times we overrate harden, hes a good play maker but if hes not getting fouled or hitting that 3pt shot hes useless. i would do that trade.

Lost Ones 679 pts

ElMexiThunder I think we would give up Kendrick ibaka harden though

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

Lost Ones Funny you say that, but in all respect Harden is at his best when he's not the one scoring. Hardens best quality is that he can create offense for others. Having that quality plus when things are going right being scary good at getting to the rim, or shooting beyond the arc makes him more valuable, then half of Orlando's team, and VERY underated across the league. I understand that he's up for sixth man of the year, but still i don't think people realize aside from KD how important Harden is on our offense. The only reason why we wouldn't, well WHY I WOULDN'T give up Westbrook is if he signed an extension, guess what he did. Harden has the make to be what Manu Geno was a few years ago a top 5 SG in the league, and in all honesty if he stays with this team he will never reach that. Which i want him to but if it meant getting the best center in the league, then i would have no problem trading Harden. Obviously though we would have to give up KP, and more then likely Ibaka as well. Then we would have such a big it on our depth in the PF/C position.

Lost Ones 679 pts

ElMexiThunder idk if he can become manu, but he has a chance to crack the top 5 considering the sg position is weak.

dollarbillrussell 776 pts

@Lost Ones @ElMexiThunder He's useless? He's the best creator and most efficient on the team and an above average defender, with the potential to be a lock-down guy when needed. I think you're underrating him.

dollarbillrussell 776 pts

That being said, I would make that trade in a heartbeat.

Lost Ones 679 pts

dollarbillrussell  Lost  ElMexiThunder harden has no mid range game whats so ever, have you ever seen him take some off the dribble for a mid range jumper? you wanna know why? cause he doesn't have one. He relies too much on fouls at the rim, if the refs stop calling them foulshis game is damn near obsolete. i love harden and all but he has to gain some versatility in his game.

dollarbillrussell 776 pts

@Lost Ones @Lost @ElMexiThunder He is also an extremely efficient finisher at the rim with a great knack to get in the paint. I don't think Harden is the 2nd coming of MJ, but to call his game obsolete is preposterous. He is every bit as important to the success of this team as Westbrook and KD.

ElMexiThunder 492 pts

 Lost Ones  dollarbillrussell

Dude seriously? I'm not riding Hardens junk but he's a hell of alot more versatile then Westbrook is. Did you forget two seasons ago during his rookie year Harden was more of a jump shooter then anything? Last season he went away from it as his ball handeling improved, this year more then ever.
