OKC bites it against the Kings, 106-101

Definitely what we all felt like doing after this one.

BOX SCORE

Sometimes when the Thunder tries to rely on late defensive energy and shot-making from their superstars to overcome stereotypically sloppy offense and mistakes, it works. But that wasn’t the case Thursday in Sacramento.

Oklahoma City surrendered a ghastly 23 turnovers and gave up 17 offensive rebounds in the kind of performance that showed the Thunder at their worst in some stretches. OKC threatened to quit messing around and take control several times in the second half, but the Kings hung around long enough to give themselves a chance to win by making plays down the stretch, and that’s what they did in a 106-101 win.

Give credit first and foremost to what has to be one of the best performances of young Demarcus Cousins’s career. The second-year forward was active all night and a force down the stretch on his way to 19 points and 9 rebounds. I haven’t seen much of Cousins this year, but I’ve certainly seen his talent and read of his occasional boneheadedness. Thursday night, Cousins was a picture of polished hustle, effort and intensity. He did everything from rebound to hit free throws in crunch time. He was the star who shone brightest in the last three minutes of the game, and it was Oklahoma City’s pair of All-Stars who walked off the court on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

For the Thunder, dropping this game probably doesn’t quite get down to the level of losing at Washington earlier this year. But it’s still a disappointing result. The Kings are a lottery team, and OKC should take care of business against them no matter the venue. The crowd was amped up for the only national TV game in Sacramento this year, and the Thunder is nearing the tail end of what has been a tiring road trip so far, but this is a game Oklahoma City should have won going away, and it didn’t.

Wasted in the loss was a franchise record 17 blocks. Serge Ibaka led the way with 10 before (crucially) fouling out late in the game. But in a way, the block party was emblematic of the way the Thunder tried to get away with yet another sloppy win but didn’t. OKC lives dangerously by being so careless with the ball and careless defensively when unfocused, and usually can bail itself out at the end of the game with stellar play, just like a weakside block bails out the defense at the end of the play. The Thunder scrambled to stop the Kings at the ends of plays and the end of the game, but it was sometimes dysfunctional Sacramento that made enough plays during all 48 minutes to get the upset.

As bad as that all sounds, it’s just one disappointing game. No new problems surfaced. It’s not news the Thunder plays like that sometimes — and, by the way, that bad-ish losses happen in every NBA season and will during this compressed season in particular. The Kings are a young team with some athleticism and passion too, and they played like you would expect them to for what amounts to their biggest home game of the year.

That’s also what should allay any fears that a loss to the Kings of any kind is outright disastrous. It’s tough to beat an unusually motivated team at home, and that’s what the Thunder ran into Thursday in Sacramento. It’s disappointing the same old issues led to the Kings having 22 more shots than OKC in a close game, but that’s the end of it. It’s easy to over-emphasize one loss and forget signs of badly needed progress, but don’t give into the temptation.

NOTES

  • I felt incomplete by not being able to watch at least some of the many pre-tipoff rituals Oklahoma City’s players have when TNT couldn’t switch to the game in time. The Lakers’ one-point win in Boston went to overtime, so with the local guys shut out by the TNT monopoly, the broadcast picked up with the Thunder game in progress and Sacramento up 4-0.
  • Everyone knows where DT stands when it comes to the Thunder wearing dark shoes with the home white uniforms, which the team wore today with the Kings decked out in their road blacks for a “black out” night. It should be the standard home look in OKC.
  • Was it written into the new CBA that the Thunder has to start slow a lot? Sacramento got out to an 11-2 lead to open the game with all of OKC’s usual problems in sluggish starts rearing their heads. But  eventually fierce defense, getting to the rim, better shot selection and good luck got the Thunder back into the game with a 14-1 run.
  • What’s up with the inside of the circle on the top half of the key being a lighter color of wood than the rest of the floor? That has to be the most random and dumb court design gimmick I’ve seen.
  • The interruption by the emergency broadcast system test in the third quarter here in the OKC metro was a loud and rude. But, you know, this is Oklahoma and we’ve got to make some accommodations for stuff that can save your skin during crazy weather.
  • Durant busted out the Dirk for a swish late in the third quarter. It’s that basketball porn stuff Bill Simmons talks about. If KD really nails that move…
  • There were a few moments you could consider Jimmer Time! Jimmer Fredette had a nice dish for an easy bucket followed by a pull-up 3-pointer in transition at one point, plus a transition layup during a 9-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters. But also an airball at the end of that run.
  • The Sacramento crowd deserves props. They were loud and proud and made a difference in the game.
  • James Harden got off to a ridiculous start, piling up 14 points on only one missed shot before the second quarter was even half over. Maybe chapped about the All-Star snub? But only three more points the rest of the way.
  • For the most part, KD and Westbrook had nice nights — other than their combined 11 turnovers, which is frustrating but not surprising on a night when the team had 23 total. Efficient scoring, not too many bad shots. No more defensive lapses than the next guy, and 60 combined points. But…
  • … the OKC bench got worked for once, at least statistically. In 76 minutes, the Thunder bench had 19 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 turnovers. In 68 minutes, the Kings bench had 34 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and one turnover. Ouch. That won’t happen every night, even with poor Eric Maynor sidelined.

Next up: 9:30 p.m. Friday at Utah to finish the road trip.

Clearly, the answer to our woes is sitting on the end of the bench.

Which are we going to be in Western conference when season ends?

Best scenario: 2nd place

Worst scenario: 4th place

How do you guys think?

tmoks 49 pts

Best scenario: 1st place

Worst scenario: 3rd.

We're up 2.5 on SA, who's gonna pass us? teams in playoff position-

-Clippers lose Chauncey and still have lots of questions..

-SA might be dangerous because they've hung around enough without Manu, but you have to think legs might be tired coming down the stretch.. and they're crap on the road

-Houston is somehow in 4th, can't see that being sustainable

-Lakers? 4-9 on the road LOL next..

-Dallas (?) maybe if they figure it out.. But already 5 games back, and we have them at home later in the season.

-Denver has fallen off the face of the earth (but worth noting they have a winning record on the road.. only OKC and MN also can boast that currently in the WC)

-Utah another unsustainable team with a favorable easy schedule

Portland is dangerous but 9th seed at this point.

In addition, many of these teams (SA, Clips, Dallas, Denver, Utah, Portland) have also played more games at home than on the road. We've played 10 at home, 16 on the road.. Just food for thought.

Im confident our D, turnovers, and rebounding will get better. It's a focus and effort thing, not a personnel thing. I just want our late game execution to get better.

Was that Vlade Divac reincarnated with the Kings as a black guy?! ;)

Serge definitely gave a little bit of a forearm, but there was some acting in that flop! lol

Why do Skip call us "his thunder" terrible trolling.

Also, I feel cheated when we don't get a Brian Davis Line of the Night. Can someone just make one up please?

Lately, I feel that Westbrook has been on a tear when it comes to scoring the ball. He's been shooting that mid range jumper well and attacking and finishing when defenders decide not to close in and that is evidenced by his higher scoring average over the last 10. However, we've dropped 3 games in that span, all against teams with spectacular perimeter players, and Russ still hasn't found his comfort zone moving the ball around. I think he needs to take it on himself to start passing the ball and creating for his teammates because he's supposed to be a leader for this team. It seems that KD is trying to be more of a playmaker but he can only do so much.

Lost Ones 679 pts

supreethm92 The problem is westbrooks oftens feeds Ibaka and perkins it often leads to turnovers after that he says fuck it ill do it my own damn self i cant blame him honestly.

OkcBaby 516 pts

supreethm92 I agree. Hes got to find a balance and not lose faith in his teammates so quick. Hes got to find a way to run the clock. The other team doesnt have to focus on defense because you got 1 or 2 guys on our team doing all the scoring. They can focus all their time and energy on the offense side of the ball.

ThunderChick2010 1891 pts

Do you think last night's loss will make it more likely that Sefolosha returns tonight rather than next week?

f5alcon 1018 pts

ThunderChick2010 not really we still have the best record.

Guys need to chill on this site though. We are learning more from these losses then winning or blowing out teams like we should. All that matters is that we get 1 or 2 seed in the playoffs and be as healthy as we can be. I wouldnt take these losses to heart. We are missing a key player and we loss another for the season. Some teams would fold after that. With Thabo 14-1 without 6-6. We ll be ok guys. Move away from the ledge. Its all good.

OkcBaby okc baby with the voice of reason :P . Okc baby is right though, every time we dont play to perfection, the sky starts falling down for some fans. and dont give me any of this, we cant beat top 10 teams bs. last time i checked chicago and miami werent perfect on their records either :P.

OkcBaby 516 pts

Gilbert Arenas with cancelling:) Id take for vet min. Sessions would be another

OkcBaby 516 pts

If Iverson or Marbury got their heads right. Id take one of them for Vet min

OkcBaby Talk about horrible fits.

OkcBaby 516 pts

shorthorns4 Theyd just be back ups. Couldnt be that bad

shorthorns4 15 pts

OkcBaby Guys like Marbury and Iverson never get their "head straight." Their heads have been crooked since birth.

Grooms512 5 pts

Yeah I'd have to say that would be like letting a bull into a China shop.

Lost Ones 679 pts

OkcBaby No we should have signed tmac last offseason

OkcBaby 516 pts

Presti would do a psychological evaluation before he interviews them. Then say look you want to win a championship. This is your role back up PG run the bench do what you do scoring wise and thats it. If you cant do that peace

f5alcon 1018 pts

OkcBaby i would sign them to 10 day deals as a test and see how they work out.

TaoMaas 214 pts

The way he was talking last night, I think Reggie Miller would come back and play for the minimum. lol (I know..too old. It was just cracking me up hearing him talk about Daequan's role on the team.)

TaoMaas 214 pts

OkcBaby I love a great redemption story, so there's a side of me that would like to see us give Iverson a shot. Hey, we got an $800,000 exception for Maynor's injury...Iverson owes $850,000 for jewelry...seems like a deal, right? I'd love for KD and the gang to show him that it's possible to balance greatness with a dose of humility. But...the reality is that people don't often change and there's a reason no NBA team is willing to take a chance on Iverson, regardless of how talented he might be.

Grooms512 5 pts

Some people have talked about acquiring personnel before the deadline, here are a couple things to keep in mind (this is posted lower in the chat btw)....

Unfortunately Aaron Brooks is out of the question. His team will go to playoffs in China and NBA players are disallowed from signing qualifying offers after March 5th (I think?) which basically means he will miss the time to make a move as a RFA due to his presence overseas. Best bet is someone like Ramon Sessions (keep in mind the Lakers have been rumored to pursue him, although they have even less assetts) or possibly even someone like Luke Ridnour (I'm from MN) but I don't know what kind of trade the Thunder would make. I know it sounds ideal to pick up one of these guys but in a trade you have to ask who you are willing to spare with, MN could be interested in a Mohammed but it would have to come with a lil more than that. Anyways Presti is a genius, he will figure it out but some veteran leadership and/or a better ball handler would certainly be a good fix for this team. Ideal situation is some people just end up playing to their potential (Perkins getting more offensive boards, RJ coming into his own and Serge Ibaka being a more explosive defensive presence). As Royce has accurately said, all elite teams are staring at issues they need to wash up before playoffs (Miami is taking much uglier losses than the Thunder) it's a matter of who can best remodel themselves for that competition when it comes. Eric's presence will be missed come playoffs especially if Westbrook gets out of hand in a game or two but overall I think the Thunder have the talent and most importantly the DRIVE to win come playoff time and this should not be underestimated.

shorthorns4 15 pts

Grooms512 I agree BUT the Western Conference is wide open this year. I really think this is the year to win it. I certainly wouldn't do anything to jeopardize the future, but I don't think acquiring Sessions or Ridnour would do that. By next year (and maybe even this year), it's very likely that Dwight Howard and Deron Williams will be somewhere in the West which will completely alter the conference IMO. I just think the time is now to make a push towards winning it all. I really hope that OKC's position at the top for the next several years will help lure a veteran free agent to come in and give a helping hand.

Grooms512 5 pts

@shorthorns4 I agree with your thoughts about the state of the west but am a little unclear if you think there is a hole to be filled and if so by who and when. Would you mind clarifying?

shorthorns4 15 pts

Grooms512 I think the team needs one of two things. A facilitator or a shooter that could play alongside Harden instead of Jackson. I think Ridnour or Sessions are the best options, not sure what it would take to get them though. The Thunder are simply getting zero out of Jackson for the 10-12 minutes he is on the floor. He's just not ready yet. This team is sorely missing a Maynor-type of player. In fact, Maynor should get a lot more minutes in my eyes next year, because he would be deadly alongside Westbrook in the same lineup. We only saw that once last year, the last game of the season against Dallas. I'm fine with Russ not being a pass first PG, but the offense needs some sort of direction.

Lost Ones 679 pts

idk i know im hard on the team but its just FRUSTRATING the way we are constructed. First of all we automatically take a L in the coaching department; we might possibly have the worst coach in the league outside of vinny delnegro. Next we have no offensive ball movement , its either iso shoot or pass and shoot. our big men outside of ibaka is useless on the offensive end we get ZERO production down there this has to be fixed somehow.Another issue we have is pacing in the half court offense, so many times we rush shots for entirely no reason and instead of our coach CALLING a timeout and getting on our guys he lets it continue until a lead dwindles down to us being down. Rebounding is a nother issue, there is no reason westbrook should be gambling for defensive/offensive boards every play because our center averages less boards then him. Ball security once again this is all coaching idk even wanna talk any more im done.

f5alcon 1018 pts

Lost Ones brooks isnt that bad of a coach overall he just is bad with "strategery" but the players like him.

dancassidy35 464 pts

f5alconLost Ones No way in hell Brooks is second worse to Vinny

Lost Ones 679 pts

dancassidy35f5alcon he's one of the worst coaches in the league face the facts what has he added to our offense in three years?

Lost Ones 679 pts

f5alcon Lmao i mean i guess the players "liking him" is a good thing strategically we are outcoached everygame; i still dont see how we beat the grizzlies last playoffs.

f5alcon 1018 pts

Lost Ones like i said he isnt a good scheme designer, but he is not the 2nd worst coach in the league, probably around 15th

worse coaches

del negro, dwane casey, lawrence frank, are all consistently worse. Based on recent performance avery johnson, dantoni, silas, gentry, and corbin are all arguable worse.

shorthorns4 15 pts

Lost Ones I'm not sure if every fan base feels this way, but it seems like Brooks is always a possession too late calling a timeout. I usually end up screaming at the TV for him to call a timeout and he promptly lets the other team come down and hit another shot before doing so. Very frustrating.

HookemKD 138 pts

EXACTLY! Like when Jimmer hit a 3 in the first or second quarter after some sloppy OKC play, he waits until the Kings hit 2 free throws on the next play to call a timeout . WTF?

f5alcon 1018 pts

Because we are over the cap with durant on 30% we should have a MLE to use if we need to pick somebody up, but that means tax paying next year.

Lost Ones 679 pts

f5alcon we should cut nazr and pick up a SF next season

shorthorns4 15 pts

f5alcon Would we have to pay the tax if we acquire someone on the last year of their deal. I'm talking anyone serviceable. Sessions would be great, but I would settle for Ridnour too.

shorthorns4 15 pts

Ya I think Hinrich is too expensive and I really think Maynor is a better option than Kirk next season if he's healthy. Kirk would be a great fit talent wise though if he's healthy too.

OkcBaby 516 pts

I kinda like fat Perk with better cardio now.

f5alcon 1018 pts

At least we have a game tonight, we had better win, I really don't think this site could handle a loss then three days of no basketball. For as bad as we have played this last week, we could be denver on a 5 game losing streak.
