Could anyone else wear Thunder blue in the second half?

Could Allen Iver… nah. (AFP)

So with half the season to go, the Thunder still have an open roster spot. Will Sam Presti use it?

Well … probably not. Grabbing a guy just to grab a guy isn’t exactly a very Presti move — although it’s worth pointing out that Presti signed Robert Vaden to an NBA contract very late last season, for no apparent reason other than to have an extra hard-working body at practice during the playoffs. Vaden looked sharp in his suit at the end of the bench though and probably had a lot of fun being with the team for a few weeks. He was last seen playing basketball in Slovakia, according to Wikipedia.

And if the Thunder do end up using the roster spot, it will probably be because of a trade of some kind. That’s definitely more Presti’s style. So perusing a list of available free agents is probably a waste of time.

But it’s still fun to do, especially facing a grueling week without basketball that matters. So let’s check out who is out there, and who might be a good fit for the Thunder.

(And first and foremost, everyone take a deep breath. Before you go all “You moron, what the hell does the Thunder need Earl Boykins for?!” on me, realize what we’re talking about here. This is a roster spot for a guy who will never play unless it’s the last game of the season and the Thunder are locked into their playoff seed, or someone who will be playing in an injury-caused emergency of some kind. We’re talking about a locker room presence and practice player, at most. It’s just something that’s fun to talk about.)

A good starting point is to take a look at needs. The most obvious place to start would be point guard, simply because the Thunder are down one point guard from the roster OKC started the season with. If you lose a player at a certain position, it can be an easy choice to fill the spot with a player at the same position.

But that doesn’t have to be the case, especially when Oklahoma City already has two guys on the roster who can back up Russell Westbrook in Reggie Jackson and Royal Ivey, and two other players who can run the offense in Kevin Durant and James Harden. OKC has only one true center backing up Kendrick Perkins in Nazr Mohammed, for example. Another big man could be a better fit.

Power forward and the wing seems a little unlikely, even if KD still doesn’t have a true backup on the roster. For one thing, the 13th man isn’t going to be a guy you’re counting on in the rotation like a serviceable backup to Durant would be. The Thunder already have two guys who can play power forward, but who never get off the bench, in Cole Aldrich and Ryan Reid (and Reid could also play the three as long as you’re just talking about defense), plus a small forward who also doesn’t see the court much in Lazar Hayward. And the Thunder already has three shooting guards (plus Ivey), all of whom can play plenty of minutes at the three in some lineups.

So I guess we’re back to point guards and centers, right? That seems to make the most sense. So here are the guys I think the Thunder would find most desirable, and why.

POINT GUARDS

Earl Boykins. OK, really, I don’t think Boykins makes a whole lot of sense. But I love the guy and would like to have him on OKC’s bench. He’s just relentless on the court, mainly because he has to be. He’s so tiny. He weighs less than my wife, who is a very fit 28-year-old an inch shorter than Boykins’ (listed) height of 5 feet 5 inches. Nick Collison has said before that Boykins is his favorite player to watch in the NBA because of how he gets the job done despite his physical limitations. And he’s unemployed right now. So I want him. And that’s that.

Allen Iverson. Just kidding. More of a two anyway.

Mike James. Well, James isn’t a free agent right now. But he will be soon, unless the Bulls re-sign him when his short term contract runs out. But at least James has actually played in the NBA this season, unlike the other guys on this list. And not only played, but played reasonably well with a nearly 4:1 assist to turnover ratio while shooting 46 percent. I definitely would not be panicking if Jackson sprained an ankle and it was James who got a few minutes in each half for a few games while Westbrook gets his rest.

Luther Head. The most underwhelming name on the list so far. But he had moments (some of them brutal, I know) when he played for the Rockets. He doesn’t seem like the worst choice in the world if the Thunder needed someone to at least put some pressure on the defense in practice with some outside shooting capability.

CENTERS

Kyrylo Fesenko. Joel Przybilla would have been the best choice, but he’s signing with Portland. Fesenko, though he isn’t the only center on this list, is the only available five out there who could realistically play for a while in the NBA. It’s a little weird to me he’s not on a roster right now, really, especially because it seems like almost any 7-footer with a pulse can find a spot at the end of the bench in the NBA. I mean, we all remember the Robert Swift era in Oklahoma City, right? Johan Petro actually plays decent minutes right now. Fesenko would be an interesting choice and can talk to Thabo Sefolosha and Serge Ibaka about European stuff.

Dan Gadzuric. OK. This is a reach.

Geez. On second thought, the pickings are pretty darned slim right now. Maybe Thunder fans would be better off hoping that if that roster space gets filled, it’s by a trade or another team’s late-season buyout signing.

Renaldo Balkman. He can defend essentially all 5 positions and his athleticism and hustle dominates other teams 2nd units, including ours., The Knicks had to waive him.

I think we need a backup point guard though. Neither Reggie Jackson nor Royal Ivey are playoff tested. Jackson turns the ball over too much here in the regular season, what is he going to do in the postseason when the lights really get bright? I don't feel comfortable going into the playoffs with no reliable backup pg.

That's why I have been advocating for Mike James all season, even before the Bulls finally 10 dayd him.

I think Antonio Daniels is still out there too

what about patty_mills ?? being an aussie i would love to see him get another chance in the nba... surely he couldn't be much worse than reggie .....

Here's a name from the past - Kyle Weaver. I loved his game when he was in OKC. Excellent defender, and maybe his ball handling skills have improved over the past 2 or 3 years playing around Europe. We probably have his clone in Ivey already, but with Thabo down and out for the unforeseeable future, it could work out. I'd take him over Lazar anyway.

diddoff 1559 pts

Jax Raging Bile Duct Nope, he's playing in Berlin. Still awful

Jax Raging Bile Duct 452 pts

diddoff You didn't like Kyle Weaver?

Jax Raging Bile Duct  diddoff I liked Weaver but I don't see what he provides that we don't already have in Ivey.

Jax Raging Bile Duct 452 pts

SammyThunderer Mostly just two Iveys and no Lazars.

The thunder should sign that kid that missed the half court shot that knocked down Rumble.  I have a good feeling about him.

I don't know if his name has been mentioned but I would be curious to why Aaron Brooks wouldn't get a look from the Thunder. To me he seems like someone who might win you a playoff game playing behind Rus.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

itstheMs You know I think Brooks has been mentioned.

f5alcon 1018 pts

itstheMs he is a restricted free agent, so the suns can match any offer

f5alcon  f5alcon, I think you must have that sentence saved in your phone and just paste it in this board about 5 times a week. That's dedication right there. We need an FAQ section that you can just link to.

OBoymuzik 1861 pts

the bottom of the western conference is going to be very interesting i feel like Minn and Denver have a good chance to get in the playoffs but i dunno who would fall out

f5alcon 1018 pts

OBoymuzik only 5 games  between 3rd and 10th place

dancassidy35 464 pts

I don't know if anyone else is watching Twolves and Clippers right now but Derrick Williams is on fire

f5alcon 1018 pts

dancassidy35 he is 9/10 4-4 from 3 and 5-5 FT crazy, in a game where rubio and love combine for 12 points, it is not what i expected to happen.

OBoymuzik 1861 pts

f5alcon and gerald green scored 10 in 18 min

dancassidy35 464 pts

The Clippers commentators are absolutely horrendous.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

dancassidy35 I disagree. Ralph Lawler is a legend.

Crow 316 pts

falcon, i think the nba can award both the  right to spend money and an extra roster spot because of disabled players if it wants but doesnt always. i am not 100% sure of the rules these days.

f5alcon 1018 pts

Crow yeah that is what I thought, but I wasn't sure what we were awarded.

Crow 316 pts

Vaden's rights were used to get Reid I believe. If they use the spot in a minor way, they might try something similar.

I'd rather make a bigger move for somebody who would join the rotation but I doubt it happens.

DSYIII 48 pts

Personally I would really like to trade for Tobias Harris of the bucks. A 3/4 hybrid who is adept at bully-ball on the block a la 'melo. He's going to blow up for the team that gives him minutes (which could be us if we play more with Ibaka at the 5), and since the bucks are a lottery team and haven't been, they definitely undervalue him. He's a hard worker, seemingly a great guy, and could grow to be our fourth scorer down the line.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

DSYIII Sounds good but I notice he's averaging over 11 minutes a game. Might have to actually give them someone serviceable for that.

DSYIII 48 pts

Old Man Game He's a smart, hard-working, late-blooming melo without the jumpshot. I absolutely think that's worth a bench player and a first round pick.

DSYIII 48 pts

Old Man Game Also he passes the eye test, and Hollinger is a fan. Most players for whom both are true end up very good.

Crow 316 pts

DSYIII  Old Man Game Harris is doing pretty well for a rookie. Counterpart stats are neutral at SF, very bad at PF.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

DSYIII So who do you suppose. Reid and a pick?

f5alcon 1018 pts

Old Man Game  presti is not going to give up reid yet.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

f5alcon Well now don't be so sure, Other than KD and possibly Russ I don't think there's anyone untradeable if the right deal came along.  The question is whether Harris is that deal and whether Milwaukee would even listen to that.

f5alcon 1018 pts

Old Man Game i know that those two are the only truly untradeable ones, though even they might have a price, though probably unreasonably high, we gave up mullens and bought out nate to get reid the roster spot, presti likes him.

JimboSlice 489 pts

f5alcon  Old Man Game Harden is also untradeable without a doubt in my mind

Ozarkhick 239 pts

Seriously, think about Jerome Jordan - he's legit 7 feet, not pretend 7 feet like most NBA centers. He's a long 7 feet as well. Great shot blocker, very athletic at 7 feet, jumps out of the gym.  Needs lower body strength, but will add that naturally over time.  The knocks were his age (still 10 years younger than Naz, and twice as athletic) and not fully understanding the game (didn't play competitively until college, can't be as stupid as Mullens).

He's basically available at the minimum, and out there for the taking.  Shed Naz and pick up Jerome, and that makes re-upping Harden and Ibaka more feasible.

If Perk/Aldrich/Jordan isn't feasible, we're already screwed anyway.  Go for it.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

Ozarkhick I don't know, I'm not sure how many project centers this team can handle at one time. Maybe if you could off load Cole in the process it might be worth a look.

Ozarkhick 239 pts

Old Man Game Can't be worse than the other dozen project centers over the past decade.  The athleticism is game ready, and I'll wager on a higher b-ball iq than the others, plus it at least clears salary space.  Perk with Cole of the bench isn't horrible, and it clears Naz's salary.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

Ozarkhick No I'm saying I want to get rid of Cole for him. That would actually clear more salary long term because Nazr is on a shorter deal. Also if you're telling me he's athletic then that's something we would be upgrading by getting him instead of Cole.

Ozarkhick 239 pts

Old Man Game Well, I watched him in college quite a bit, he's way more athletic than Cole, but not as strong.  Physically, he's squarely in Byron territory.  The question is merely "can he play smarter than Byron".  After 4 years in college (which Byron should have done) the answer is probably yes, but he's still a project and needs to get stronger, and available on the cheap. Take that for what you will.

Jax Raging Bile Duct 452 pts

Ozarkhick I thought Jerome Jordan would be the next Deandre Jordan - athletic shot blocker with athleticism and hustle. But that was before Deandre made the leap. But still, worse case in my mind is that Jerome become a poor man's Deandre. I think it'll do him some good to play behind Chandler for a while.

Ozarkhick 239 pts

If we're getting a center, I still say go for Jerome Jordan.  He's another diamond in the rough on the Knicks bench.  In his limited minutes, he's done nothing to disprove he isn't at least as serviceable as Naz. He'd clear some salary cap as well.

Crow 316 pts

Ozarkhick Low turnovers, great defense so far. Tiny tiny minutes but yeah he is one of 6-10 young bigs worth looking hard at and trying to steal though it will rarely happen.

Crow 316 pts

I don't know if Powe is healthy but I have always liked his game & effort. You could do worse than J Moon. Maybe better than him too but he was played well in the past more than not. He might not be enough of an effort, work ethic guy though for Presti.

Crow 316 pts

I am curious about D  Caracter's game. I'd probably at least give him a work out. The right size. Some skills.

I kinda like R Balkman. He has played well when given a defined role and minutes.

Jooseppi 975 pts

Crow Balkman's a solid role player.. NBA teams could do a lot worse than having him off their bench.

Crow 316 pts

I wonder if any team gives Blake Ahern a trial run, after Linsanity. Ahern did well in Europe and now the D-league. For some reason, probably valid, maybe not, scouts have judged him not NBA worthy.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

You know how those scouts are sitting around talking about how players and they're focusing on trivial stull like their looks. And Beane basically shows them over the course of the movie that was a stupid way to evaluate talent, still with a guy like Ahern (and I hate to go here) but I wonder if his looks aren't working against him. Not his race but with that receding hairline the guy just doesn't look athletic. He looks like your banker or your dentist.  Because all reports are that he's an excellent shooter. Seems strange there isn't a roster spot for him somewhere.

Crow 316 pts

Old Man Game I haven't seen the movie because I can't stand baseball anymore. Liked it as a kid but not since.

Old Man Game 1070 pts

Crow You should watch it. I don't watch baseball either but it was a good story. I especially think you'd like it given the stats analysis aspect of the story.

Crow 316 pts

Old Man Game yeah i probably should but I am in no rush. maybe I'll read the book instead.
