Would Kevin Durant consider restructuring his contract?

Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE/Getty Images

Actually, the right question is, could Kevin Durant consider restructuring his contract?

In this week’s mailbag, I answered a question about Durant and the possibility that he would renegotiate his deal to potentially free up a little more room to sign James Harden and Serge Ibaka. Under the old collective bargaining agreement, contract restructuring wasn’t allowed. But in the new one, players can.

It was among the so-called “b-list” issues and basically a player can renegotiate their deal to be paid a smaller amount, but the player’s salary can’t decrease by more than 40 percent.

However, there’s a catch and that’s where KD’s deal comes in. Someone with direct knowledge of the CBA tells me a player on a maximum level contract can’t do it. Because the restructuring has to include an extension and a designated five-year player can’t be extended. For example, a player on a three-year deal could restructure, but would have to get a new four-year deal. And since KD already has a five-year contract, he can’t add any more years to that.

So the conclusion: Even if KD wanted to do it, he couldn’t do it. But would he if he could?

I asked KD about it before the game against the Hornets before I had it all sorted out and for fun, here’s what he said.

“If they came to me, of course I’d look at it. I want to keep everybody together,” he said. “But it seems that everything is going to fall in place perfectly as far as keeping the group together as far as contracts are concerned. But I really haven’t look into it.”

No surprise, but KD would be willing if it was something that was necessary. Or I guess, possible.

But like he said, it might not be. We’ve all broken down the future contract scenarios a number of times and it’s going to be close, but it’s possible the Thunder are fine. And if they’re no, so be it. You move on and try and win with who you’ve got. The fact OKC has Durant and Westbrook locked up and will almost certainly keep Harden is enough to make them a contender for a while.

That’s all to worry about later though. Because this current team is set and ready to compete for a championship as is. Whether in five years the core of the roster looks different or not, the championship window is wide open. Of course the future is something to keep an eye on because sustaining the success is the plan, but the focus is on the now. Worry about the rest when that bridge needs to be crossed.

Lord Byron returns to the bench. Diop will start at C again.

ILikePancakes Wait, you mean he wasn't really a 20-10 threat every night? I am shocked.

In all seriousness, it was a good run, but we knew it was unsustainable. Once those low efficiency long 2s stopped falling, his scoring fell off of a cliff. After that, Charlotte realized they had a 7 foot SG with little rebounding ability and no interest in defense.

I'm interested to see how Lil Nate plays tonight. I could see him going off on us, but I could also see him trying to do too much and end up going 2-12.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Nate Rob try to guard Russell. That should be entertaining. Russ should try and post him up every chance he gets.

Daniel Hawaii Oh, this will be amazing.

Daniel Hawaii nate rob doesnt start, he is going up against jackson. they will probably keep curry or ellis on russ.

Nate vs Reggie will be even better since this will be a match-up of who would take over the 2nd team after Maynor got hurt.

why is it i used to feel like the thunder were sooo deep, but now...... is it just me?

Daniel Hawaii 692 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson Bench took a step back when Maynor got injured and Cook went through his eye thing. Hopefully, things are on the upswing now that Reggie is settling in and Daequan seems to have his stroke back.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 613 pts

Daniel Hawaii I know we lost maynor, but i feel like its not just that... maybe its philly denver minnasota and other teams that are deep playing better than they were this time last year... i still feel like we've got enough, but its a lot of pressure on KD RW and JH... would be nice to have another person average 10-15... hopefully serge continues to step up... time to play like the all star he said he wanted to be

dollarbillrussell 776 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilsonDaniel Hawaii I'm pretty sure every team in the league would like to have a 4th option who averaged 10-15. Sadly this is the NBA and that doesn't happen. That's like saying it would be nice to have a point guard who averaged a triple double.

Daniel Hawaii 692 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson Denver and Philly are arguably deeper than us, but they don't have the star power we have. They don't have 2, or even potentially 3 All-Stars. When they really need a bucket in crunch time, who's the go-to guy?

And teams that do have a Big 2 or 3 like Miami, LAL, LAC, NYK, Boston, etc., don't have our depth.

So we really have the best of both worlds.

dollarbillrussell 776 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilsonDaniel Hawaii I should rephrase what I said. Teams with 4th options like this do exist, however their top scorers are struggling to break 20 points a game. Whereas our top two players average close to 50 combined points per game.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 613 pts

dollarbillrussellDaniel Hawaii agreed... although LAC is pretty deep in certain positions, just not in the post... they have great guard depth and some good wing players.. I agree we have the best of both worlds, just feel like we need another scorer... at least 7 of our players our pretty limited offesively, and thats being generous... kinda wish we had nate rob instead of lazar

RodneyRosavelRusanWilsonDaniel Hawaii Bottom line Ibaka needs to step up haha

JJJ 53 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson I think we're still pretty deep, just not as effective. The bench hasnt been extending leads like in the past. I don't have the stats to back me, but from watching them, it seems like the D especially has slacked off with the second unit.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 613 pts

The clippers grizzlies game might feature the worst uni combo ive ever seen... the grizzlies look like jv practice jerseys

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson Jeez, the USBL had better jerseys. These are seriously atrocious.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 613 pts

they say "the thunder have the best record in the league... percentage points over chicago"

they never say chicago is just percentage points ahead of the thunder

ThunderWins 510 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson Let's hold on to it for a week before we worry about what they say. Last time we had best record we gave it up next game.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 613 pts

ThunderNZSammyThunderer both good picks... the 2010 draft was super weak and i still think 5 even 10 years down the road cole will be one of the best picks.. could have a long career, even if hes had a slow start

Another thing I've wondered... If/when (yes, its if/when now!) we win the championship this year, does that help or hurt our chances at re-signing harden/ibaka/maynor when they become free agents?

It may seem like if they get rings, they'll be more likely to sacrifice some $ to repeat as champions and build a dynasty... but that isn't how it worked in Dallas, as Butler, Stevenson, Barera and Chandler walked for more cash.

I know our players are quality people, but they are also young too. Do you think if we win the ring, james might say to himself, we'll, ive got my ring, now its time to go get my money. Even if he doesnt win a championship with his next team, he is still young enough to keep chasing one elsewhere for years to come

f5alcon 1018 pts

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson i think harder to keep role players, as they have their ring, easier to keep the core.

DavidLord 5 pts

Sorry but the rule you are talking about doesn't even exist. The CBA (in 2005 and again in 2011) says a player CANNOT renegotiate existing salary downwards under any circumstances.

f5alcon 1018 pts

DavidLord yes you can, it is in the new CBA, but like royce pointed out it can't be a max player.

DavidLord 5 pts

f5alconDavidLord Nope, there is no such rule. I have the new CBA, and Royce is simply mistaken. I made the discovery on reading the CBA about 3 weeks ago, it was confirmed by the NBA and put into print, but obviously not everyone has the word yet. http://mavericks.scout.com/2/1145100.html

f5alcon 1018 pts

DavidLord Well it is better that you can provide a source. So I stand corrected. I assume there is an NDA on the CBA as to why it hasnt become public on your site?
