Wednesday Bolts – 1.18.12

John Hollinger of ESPN.com: “But mostly, it’s a failure of the Thunder to prevent shot attempts. Oklahoma City is falling short on two levels — forcing turnovers and gathering rebounds. The Thunder are only 25th in forcing turnovers, creating miscues on 13.74 percent of opponent possessions. This has never been a strength of theirs — a year ago they were 19th — but with so much youth and athleticism dotting the roster, you’d think they’d be getting better and not worse in this category.”

Ian Thompson of SI.com on James Harden: “If Harden had been starting for the Thunder, it’s likely he would have served as a spot-up afterthought behind the ball-dominating Durant and Westbrook. Not that Harden couldn’t have managed that role — he has the potential to be a terrific shooter — but the Thunder drafted him with the No. 3 pick in 2009 with the idea that he would be much more. “He’s Paul Pierce version 2, except that he’s a better passer,” said Celtics coach Doc Rivers before a 97-88 loss to the visiting Thunder on Monday. “He plays at a great NBA speed — he came into the league playing at that speed. I don’t think a coach has ever said he’s going too fast. He has a great tempo about him, an unbelievable feel.”

And check out this actually great quote from Sam Presti on Harden: “James is somewhat of an artist for our team. He sees things a little bit differently. It’s almost as if he’s a right-brained player. He’s an abstract thinker on the court — he’s not simply connecting the dots, but he’s seeing things and that gives us a different dimension.”

James Harden Tebowing in DC.

Here’s the team in front of the MLK Monument. Please note Perk in that picture.

Eric Koreen of The National Post: “Russell Westbrook is one of the most divisive players in the league, especially after last year’s playoff run when he was accused of hijacking the offence and not deferring to Durant enough. Still, you would rather have him than not have him. He outplayed Boston’s Rajon Rondo, can be a defensive nightmare when he wants to be and has no fear of taking big shots. (Of course, that last item is where part of the criticism comes from.)”

It’s the annual story about the Thunder being a model for a bad team.

Want to be in KD’s new movie? You can apply for a couple of parts, including playing one of the Thunder players.

Russell Westbrook’s highlights from the Celtic game are awesome.

Just watched the Russ highlights and noticed something weird. As soon as he let go of his two 4th quarter threes EVERYBODY on the Thunder started drifting AWAY from the basket. Are they that confident in Russ or are we that bad on the offensive boards?

Keith00 42 pts

I just want to say it again, I will be disappointed if we don't blow out the Wiz. They are the worst offensive team in the league, and a bottom 10 defense. We should have no trouble scoring on them, and we should use this game to get the defense back on track. If KD/Russ/Harden need to play at all in the 4th (if they do it's fine, I just don't want the game to be close enough that they need to) I will feel like our team failed.

f5alcon 273 pts

Keith00 yeah this should be a team where our backups should be able to keep a large lead. Boost our hollinger numbers.

Dominator 8 pts

f5alconKeith00 I'd be greatly disappointed to not see Aldrich, and mildly disapointed to not see Ivey and Haywood!

TaoMaas 58 pts

Dominator When things are going well for the Thunder, my wife and I have started saying, "I predict an Aldrich sighting tonight!"

Stringer Bell 89 pts

TaoMaasDominator Lazar Hayward: The Human Victory Cigar.

Daniel Hawaii 208 pts

Stringer Bell That's about all he's good for.

C_Dub 150 pts

Keith00 you know the game is well in hand when we're trotting out Hayward and Ivey. =)

I wonder if they need Thunder Girl doubles? I could do that with just a few minor tweaks from a personal trainer, hair stylist, cosmetic surgeon, dance instructor . . .

f5alcon 273 pts

ThunderChick2010 Don't be so modest, I am sure you already could be a double for them.

osanowhoa 53 pts

Westbrook is definitely divisive within the fan-base. People have wildly different views on him as a player, and very strong emotional reactions to his play. Within the team I doubt he divisive at all however, if anything the team seems to be coming together over the perceived attacks on one of their own by the media.

NathanHurley 46 pts

notice in the wizards article they say that the thunder is 12-3 . ummm.whom did we lose a third game to O.o

ThunderChick2010 207 pts

NathanHurley Guess they're being optimistic about tonight. :)

f5alcon 273 pts

NathanHurley Because we don't get any respect

Kevin Harlan's "Cold Blooded 3!!!" is my favorite call of the season so far.

Dominator 8 pts

Interested to hear your take on this... who would be your starting 5 for the London Olympics? (and then the 2-3 key reserves). Biggest questions have to be... KD over Lebron? Or start both, Kobe over D Wade?

I'd start... PG: Paul; SG: Kobe; C: Howard; F: James; F: Durant

Key reserves playing big minutes being: Rose, Wade and Aldridge (when we need a more traditional power forward).

f5alcon 273 pts

Dominator i wouldnt start howard, the international game is better suited to a smaller shooting center, bosh or love would probably be better at center durant or lebron at pf.

Keith00 42 pts

Dominator My starting 5:

Paul - Lebron - Durant - Melo - Bosh.

I know it looks weird, but Melo is absolutely terrific in international play, and Bosh was by far our best center the past two teams. My main reserves would be Iguodola, Harden, and Aldridge.

Dominator 8 pts

Keith00 Yeh - I can see that, although against Spain they may need some more size to combat the Gasols and Ibaka.

ThunderChick2010 207 pts

di-vi-sive (adj.) - causing or tending to cause disagreement or dissension; disruptive, unsettling, alienating, troublesome, controversial, contentious

Are they talking about OUR Russell Westbrook?

ThunderChick2010 207 pts

Isn't Harden left-handed? If so, it's no surprise that he displays a lot of right-brained qualities and excels where visual and spatial awareness is key.

f5alcon 273 pts

ThunderChick2010 yeah that makes sense.

jallenmorris 34 pts

ThunderChick2010 I was about to write the same thing after Presti's "right-brained" comment.

walrusmuse 47 pts

I thought I might try for Nick...6'5, white boy, dark hair, played bball...figured thats my only chance. or i could get a quick shiner and go as Cole.

f5alcon 273 pts

walrusmuse that is probably tall enough, go for it.

Daniel Hawaii 208 pts

walrusmuse You'd also have to get a tooth knocked out.

MartzMimic 19 pts

You think someone 5-9, 185 pounds has a chance as Perk's double? I've been working on my scowl.

f5alcon 273 pts

MartzMimic lol, too bad nate rob isnt still here, more people might be able to do that one.

TylerD951 7 pts

The Russ in those highlights is the one that deserves the big $$$. The question is, how often will we get that Russ?

alexklaas 11 pts

where the hell are they going to find a bunch of 6'10 guys for player doubles...

Tronchaser 68 pts

alexklaas Renzi Stone for Nick. I can see it.

Tronchaser 68 pts

alexklaas Also, go down to the Lighthouse or the Sante Fe gym on Sat and Sun. There are literally TONS of dudes that are 6'6" and taller playing league ball there. They're aorund. You just have to go to the right spots.

f5alcon 273 pts

Tronchaseralexklaas it would be cool if the team held open tryouts for a summer league roster spot.

JimboSlice 198 pts

Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of funny that the only picture they could get of Sef was still in his Bulls uniform?

walrusmuse 47 pts

Do we really put Russ in the "divisive" bin? I guess, I should say does the media really want to do that? I'm thinking DMC, Ellis, Barnes, Delonte West, that kinda player. Russ isn't even remotely like that. Sigh.

f5alcon 273 pts

walrusmuse yeah he is not a divisive player, it is this whole media creating an issue out of nothing, the team doesnt have a problem with him.

walrusmuse 47 pts

f5alcon one of the best things about the past few games is how well our team flow and vibe has been...i know it's vague, but it seems like they have relaxed a lot over past few games. and it's helped to win, even.

f5alcon 273 pts

walrusmuse i hope they don't get too relaxed and drop one of these easy wins.

walrusmuse 47 pts

f5alcon yeah that's been the change: we don't seem to panic when the somewhat non-dimensional offense sputters-we've had some odd role players step up (Sef, Harden) or KD or Russ actually finishing the big plays. It might not last, but it's nice to see. I'm hoping KD is amped up because of home town, and he drops his first 40 pointer tonight.

f5alcon 273 pts

walrusmuse he needs some big games catch up to kobe for scoring leader

TaoMaas 58 pts

f5alcon I posted this same thing a while back, but I'm getting the feeling that this might be the year that KD doesn't win the scoring title, but instead the Thunder make it all the way to the championship game by getting more of the team involved in the scoring.

f5alcon 273 pts

TaoMaas yeah that probably will be the case, i don't think he really cares anyway.

Thunderbeard 8 pts

TaoMaasf5alcon And without a doubt, KD would be ok with that. :)

On a side note, who else is looking forward to getting a number 35 Team USA jersey?

TaoMaas 58 pts

Wow...great article on Harden. I liked this line: "He kills you with simplicity," agreed Rivers.
That sums up The Beard nicely.

Skyline 76 pts

TaoMaas Yes,great compliments from Doc Rivers. "He's Paul Pierce version 2, except he's a better passer", said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. That will cost the Thunder a few more million next year, haha. I'm sure that Presti would have liked for Doc to keep compliments like that to himself. If I am Hardens' agent I'm making sure I keep that one on file.
