Tuesday Bolts – 1.17.12

John Hollinger of ESPN.com on last night’s game: “No, the factors behind Oklahoma City’s league-leading start and the Celtics’ limp to start the season are much deeper than just a role-playing, dirty-work center. Boston appears to be in the death throes of the Garnett-Allen-Pierce nucleus; we’re not ready to read last rites just yet but the patient is definitely critical. That was going to be the case whether Perkins, Jermaine O’Neal or Doc Rivers was the starting center. (O’Neal, for the record, badly outplayed his opposite number, with only his second double-double since becoming a Boston Celtic.)”

Celtics Hub: “Durant-Pierce was a scary matchup before the game, but Pierce ultimately was the one who exposed Durant. He was given a free pass to the basket on several occasions, and got free for some big shots to bring the C’s within two in the fourth. Durant, meanwhile, was going to get his numbers no matter who was on him. Good to see some life from Pierce.”

Via NewsOK, Eric Maynor will get a second opinion on his knee.

Here’s Perk’s return tribute video.

Perk on his return: “That was unbelievable,” Perkins said. “I really appreciate it. I say this time and time again. I really appreciate the whole city of Boston. The whole Celtics organization, just the way that they embrace me time and time again…They didn’t have to do it. I’m not taking it for granted.” Perkins then admitted he’s still a Celtic at heart. “It ain’t like something that you can just let go,” Perkins said. “I’m greatly appreciative of being in Oklahoma. I love Oklahoma. But just being here for eight years and winning a championship, it’s hard to replace it…It still has a special place in my heart.”

Berry Tramel on Perk: “Perkins said he’ll always be a “Celtic at heart,” and you know what? I have no problem with that. I like it that Perk admits that people and a place were important to him. I think that speaks well of Perk as a person. I think in whatever organization we’re in — work, school, friendships, church, doesn’t matter — it’s important to surround yourself with people with those kinds of values. It can only pay off.”

Antenna going up in Chesapeake Arena.

Marc Stein’s power rankings have OKC second: “Anyone out there worried that Durant doesn’t have a 30-point game yet in 2012? Please. The overriding concern in OKC, if there is one, is figuring out whether they really can get by for a whole season without the quiet composure they get from Eric Maynor.

Hollinger moved OKC up to No. 5.

From Elias: “Kevin Durant scored 28 points and Russell Westbrook scored 26 in the Thunder’s win over the Celtics on Monday. It’s the 35th time in their four seasons as teammates that Durant and Westbrook have each scored at least 25 points in the same game. No other teammates in NBA history have even had 25 games of each scoring 25 points before turning 24 years old.”

Kurt Helin of PBT: “But this much was clear — Oklahoma City was so much more athletic, more physical so much younger and more energetic. Rondo is the best player on the Celtics and yet at several times and when the game mattered most he could not stop Russell Westbrook. Put simply, the Thunder were better.”

Wes Welker supports the Thunder.

Darnell Mayberry: “Keep an eye on Harden’s production on the road. He struggled with his shooting away from home last season, and he looks to be doing the same thus far this year. The next two doormat of opponents might be just what Harden needs.”

Anyone know where I can find a high res version of that photo of KD's dunk last night?

ThunderBelize 9 pts

Anyone else thing the Thunder has the chance to push this win streak up to 12 or 13 in the next 2 weeks? I mean even the Clippers and the first 4 games in Feb are very much winnable - though tougher than the next 5.

That would put us heads and tails above everyone!

Go thunder!

@Royce and @Brix - plan a watch party for the April 22nd Lakers Game! I'm coming from Belize to watch one of the last 2 games but get there late the week before!!

f5alcon 273 pts

ThunderBelize even that assumes we lose to dallas, we could get all the way to at San Antonio without a loss.

I think we could go well past dallas and san antonio, but realistically if we make it through either of those games without a "let down" then there is a very scary potential for a much longer run. Statistically, a let down, or two is highly likely in those 5 games starting with the Clips. still putting us at 17+ and 3 or 4 will be class of the league!

Here's a fun link - interesting to see how OKC players and team are perceived by GM's/Execs around NBA:

RW tied for 3rd as best perimeter defender. Thats surprising.

courtsense 299 pts

anonymous12345 He was Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, but he gambles way too much for my liking...leaves his teammates playing 4-on-5, which isn't good.

gr8ball83 70 pts

courtsense Love that the "Best Leaders" list doesn't include the King of the league... What is he the King of anyway?

courtsense 299 pts

gr8ball83 He's the King of the World! Anointed by himself, apparently.

courtsense Great link! Here's my favorite part: Which team has the best home court advantage? 1. Oklahoma City 44.4%

I've got to get to a game soon.

One of the things I like about this year's Thunder is that they seem to be doing a better job of closing out games. They've let some teams sneak back up on them, but have managed to keep them at bay. Hopefully, 4th quarter collapses are something they've given up for the new year. lol

Grolgar 142 pts

Why does everyone keep talking about how the Perk trade hurt the Celtics for THIS season?!? He would have already left in free agency b/c they couldn't offer him enough. The ONLY thing worth talking about is whether they would have done better to finish LAST season.

f5alcon 273 pts

Grolgar People assume he would take a paycut to stay with the celtics.

ou_sas 39 pts

f5alconGrolgar Given how bloated the market for centers became after free agency started, I think the 35 mil. we got him for was a steal of a deal. Now, if the Celts amnestied PP to pay Perk, I could see that getting the deal done.

Alas, hindsight.

ou_sas 39 pts

Grolgar I suppose the only thing you could look at on that front would be could Danny Ainge have got more for Perk? And would Krstic and Green (if Green hadn't been sidelined for the year), help them? Given how shallow their bench is, probably.

I think Boston has also gotten somewhat of a pass on how they mentally broke down after the trade. Instead the media makes Perk out to be as important to the C's as Dwight Howard is to the Magic. The thunder players probably experienced the same emotions as the Celtics players but it was the young guys that seemed to take it in stride and went on a win streak and the veteran celtics immedietly threw in the towel.

Keith00 42 pts

I am going to be legitimately disappointed if we don't blow out the next two teams on the schedule. Washington can barely score in an empty gym 9 times out of 10, and their defense should have not chance. We should win by 20+ unless Russ decides he needs to personally school Wall on the way to a brickfest. New Jersey couldn't defend a college team, much less our boys. And offensively, they have exactly one decent player. Stay home on the rest and they will be lucky to break 80 points overall.

Blowouts. I need to see them. I need to see the team stop playing down to competition (they've done if for two years now), win early, and coast. I just do. I can't take sweating out games to teams with no reasonable hope.

f5alcon 273 pts

Keith00 yeah we will see if our bench keeps the big leads.

ou_sas 39 pts

Keith00 I think as long as James gets his touch back, we'll be on that way. We've already had 3 or 4 games this season where we've benched the starters for the fourth quarter. I see no reason that either of these two teams should force us to do otherwise for these games.

Thunderbeard 8 pts

Keith00 We have what I call the "fair play philosophy".lol. As a team we refuse to blow out other teams most of the time cause that just wouldn't be "sporting" of us. I know in the compressed season we got to rest our starters more but we have to stop letting our garbage time players squander 20+ point leads, as a fan there's nothing fun about watching an impressive lead dwindle to a five point win.

We need to take some advice from Conan about whats best in life ;"To Crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their Women"

SammyThunderer 759 pts

Minor quibble. Hollinger did not move OKC up to 5. OKC is now ranked 5th according to a predetermined formula designed by Hollinger. I know it seems like an irrelevant distinction, but it's annoying to constantly hear commenters say things like Hollinger hates their team when Hollinger's subjective opinions on each team have no bearing on his rankings.

f5alcon 273 pts

SammyThunderer At least on here the argument against his rankings is that winning margin has a really big effect on the rankings and strength of schedule is not a big enough factor. The 76ers for example only have 1 win over a team with a winning record.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

f5alcon Maybe, but way things are weighted has some basis in their correlations with playoff success. Conversely, you could argue the Thunder should be ranked even lower since the rankings don't take injuries into account and in six of the thunder's 12 wins the opponent was missing their best player.

f5alcon 273 pts

SammyThunderer The sample size is just too small now, in a few months it should shake out to a more reasonable number for the 76ers.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

f5alcon Well, yeah that too for sure

heysloth 6 pts

SammyThunderer f5alcon I think we will get a good idea of who Philly is over the next three games, like everyone its too early for his rankings. Kind of like preseason rankings for college football. Question is why doesn't Hollinger just wait until 15- 20 games into the season before posting these?

heysloth 6 pts

Opps Step 1. Refresh, Step 2. Post...

f5alcon 273 pts

heysloth I think the first one is released at 5 games. Really it is a meaningless rating anyway, Wins is the only thing that really matters.

Tronchaser 68 pts

f5alconheysloth I'll take dead last in the Hollinger ratings for a 12-2 record. Thank-you-very-much.

Boston is paying in spades for giving up Perkins for what can be seen as nothing. With Krstic playing out in Russia and Jeff Green not being able ton play, Boston has nothing to show for thatv trade but grief. Frankly I think the Celtics deserve it. Their front office pulled a bone-headed move and ruined any chance of them being a playoff contender.

f5alcon 273 pts

jtshoopsblog this year they have much bigger problems than not having perk, o'neal played better than perk last night. last season not having perk cost them in the playoffs, but they still may not have beaten the heat.

They should just tank this season, get a nice lottery pick, trade or amnesty pierce. then rebuild. Dumping pierce would mean they only have 14mm on the books for next year and could go pay dwight howard.

shiki 67 pts

f5alconjtshoopsblog It will be interesting if they pick Austin Rivers

TaoMaas 58 pts

f5alcon I think you're right about the Celtics not beating the Heat even if they had Perk for last year's playoffs. Perk was a different player last year...heavier...much less active. I don't fault Boston for making the Perk trade. How could anyone have predicted that the guy with the repaired knee would turn back the clock by about 4 years, while the seemingly healthy player would be found to have a serious hidden heart ailment?

f5alcon 273 pts

TaoMaas jeff green even passed the trade physical

Keith00 42 pts

f5alconTaoMaas I hope the Celtics do pick Rivers. Besides the obvious conflict of interest, Austin simply isn't ready for the NBA, and I don't think he is a great fit next to Rondo.

f5alcon 273 pts

this next week should help our hollinger ranking with these easy teams and the fact that some of teams in front of us play each other.

PlusMinusGod 145 pts

Also, Dallas radio talking heads still seem certain they're making the WCF. If I were them I would be worried about making the playoffs. If they do they'll be a 7th or 8th seed

PlusMinusGod 145 pts

I'm pretty sure Harden has played well on the road. Didn't he single-handedly beat the Mavs on the road in the playoffs and play pretty well during some of our road wins this year already
