Thursday Bolts – 1.26.12

Eddie Johnson of HoopsHype ranked the top 25 players with Westbrook 12 and Durant four: “I was having dinner with my wife last year, looked up and saw Durant walking outside. Without hesitation I bolted out of my seat to approach him to just let him know that I admire everything about his game and his attitude. True to form, he stood there and soaked in everything I said and said thank you. Not one time in those few minutes did I feel rushed or ignored and it seemed like he was reveling in the opportunity to gain more knowledge. This is why Durant will become one of the best players this game has seen. It is mindboggling that his numbers, already in the stratosphere, continue to improve every year. He is standing alongside Kobe Bryant right now as the best perimeter shot maker in the game. The biggest asset Durant has is his leadership. The way he has handled his teammates, especially Russell Westbrook, has been extremely impressive.”

According to Forbes, KD is the eighth highest earner in the NBA this season making $24.5 million.

The Thunder are valued at $348 million by Forbes, a 1 percent increase from last season that has them sitting 15th in the league.

From Elias: “Kevin Durant scored 25 points and made 9 of his 13 field-goal attempts as the Thunder beat the Hornets, after shooting 9-for-13 from the floor against the Pistons on Monday night. Durant’s field-goal percentage over his last two games (69.2%) is his third-highest over any two-game span during his NBA career, topped only by his 70 percent shooting over consecutive games earlier this month (21-for-30 vs. New Orleans and New York, Jan. 11-14) and a 70 percent rate (28-for-40) against Denver and Golden State, January 29-31, 2010.”

Hornets 24/7′s breakdown.

Darnell Mayberry: “Nights like tonight are when you wish Westbrook had a filter. It just wasn’t his night. He was off and he had no clue how to turn it on. But he kept forcing the issue and, in the process, shutting out his teammates with one ill-advised attack after another. Russ has been great lately, and it wouldn’t be fair to make a big deal out of this one performance. But this game is a prime example of the instincts that he lacks and is still looking to learn. The better option for him clearly would have been to defer and instead of continuing to try to be deadly with his own offense.”

At the Hive: “But for yet another game, the Hornets went up against a strong team (one that’s supposedly the favorite to win the conference) and kept it close. It’s an indictment of how awful Russell Westbrook was certainly, but it also fits within the larger Hornets schema – these guys won’t get blown out often. They simply rebound too well (collecting 86% of all available defensive rebounds tonight) and fight too hard on defense (holding OKC to 3 points/100 poss. below their season average) to allow their utterly despicable offense to dictate final score lines.”

Can you name all the Oklahoma City Hornets?

Nick Gallo of the team’s official site: “Whether it was Westbrook and Durant executing a give-and-go alley-oop to perfection or Durant finding Reggie Jackson for an open jump shot to beat the first quarter buzzer, the Thunder made a concerted effort to swing the ball and get the Hornets big men moving to try to create space in the lane, which was something Brooks said his team was focused at Wednesday morning’s shoot-around. Harden, who finished with six assists, found the sharp-shooting Daequan Cook on three separate occasions for 3-pointers. One came on a seemingly scripted cross-court pass after Nick Collison set a back screen for Cook, and another occurred as Cook curled around a screen at the top of the key, squared up, and fired.”

Eddie johnson has Blake Griffin ranked too high.. He'll be a top ten player soon, but isn't at that caliber yet

Joe_ 18 pts

Nice words about KD from former, one time Sonic Eddie Johnson. He had a sweet stroke like KD.

HookemKD 41 pts

In terms of stats KD is probably fourth, but in terms of winning a championship I would put him first. I don't think there is a fan in OKC who would trade KD for LeBron.

courtsense 299 pts

ztejas LeBron is the better player, but his entourage/baggage is a non-starter for me. KD is the better leader, better teammate, and may well end up being the better player.

I've been looking a little bit at our stats on turnovers and assist for this season compared to last season. We're getting less assists as a team this year (18.33 per game this season compared to 20.39 per game last season) . Some of this can be explained by looking at Durant, who is getting assisted at a much lower rate this season (45% of field goals assisted for 4.1 assists per game this season compared to 62% of field goals assisted for 5.6 assists per game last season). I'm sure the assist stats are also affected by the roster change from Krstik & Green to Ibaka and Perkins. In some ways it's almost surprising we get as many assists as we do considering how many of our field goal attempts are taken by our top 3 players (60%) and how low their rates of being assisted are. Compare to last year when the percent of our field goals attempts made by our top 3 players (54.7%) was lower while at the same time Durant and Harden were assisted at much higher rates.

A look at the turnover stats reveals a bit about our passing game as well. From last season to this season turnovers related to ball handling have dropped (47.5% of turnovers last season to 43.3%). These turnovers have been picked up in offensive fouls (18.4% of turnovers last season to 19.1%) and especially in bad pass turnovers (34.2% of turnovers last season to 37.7%). Compared to last season we're averaging 1.4 additional turnovers from bad passes a game. Also of note, the assist to bad pass ratio has dropped for Durant, Westbrook, and Harden.

A few things jump out at me from this. We're playing much more iso with Durant and Harden, but despite that as a team we're actually attempting a similar or greater number of passing plays overall, though we aren't executing them as well. It seems to me like we're trying to play a better kind of passing game compared to last year, but that we're not executing it well and thus there are some negative results. Hopefully we can keep trying to move the ball but turn some of these bad passes into assists.

osanowhoa Three things I've noticed that go hand in hand with this. 1) Russell has no pop option like Krstic anymore. I'd say a large majority of Krstic's jumpshots were someone else's assist, usually Russell's. Ibaka is there to hit a jumper, but he must not be adept at the screening part of his responsibility because they never run that play. 2) James has become brilliant at that high ball screen. It's almost not fair to call it a PnR or PnP when James runs it because if he ever passes out of it, it's not back to the screener, it's a wing or a big on the baseline. I think our ball movement transitioned to the free throw line where James has been living this year. 3) Ibaka and Perk are instant turnovers if the ball comes their way on offense. Say what you will about Krstic and Green, but neither of them had stone hands soaked in KY Jelly, and both of them had at least one offensive move that concerned a defense as well as the ability to pass out of a bad offensive situation, rather than just go head down and out of control.

The quiet before the storm. Man the ship starting the 30th the Perfect Storm will arrive.

walrusmuse 47 pts

OkcBaby i don't know that a team with VDN at the helm is perfect (-ly stormy that is) but I am really curious to see how we do against the Clippers. And them against us. Really going to be fun to watch. I hope.

OkcBaby 171 pts

walrusmuse Not so much the Clippers but the Month will be packed with tougher competition.

Time to do our octo-annual complain about rankings thing:

Blake Griffin in front of Dwyane Wade is a heinous crime.

His ranking and reasoning on Marc Gasol isn't necessarily wrong, just confusing.

Rose, as expected, is too high, but not way too high.

Can't really complain too much about the rest of the list though. Maybe that Harden didn't make the "next 10", seeing that most of those guys probably don't belong in the next 10 at all, much less in front of Harden, but other than that, not a bad ranking effort.

I'll live with Harden for near-max though, just as long as we're proactive and make sure that doesn't screw us.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

Kevin (New Jersey)

How good has James Harden been? He's Top 10 in the NBA in PER, and has a TS% of .670. All-Star? Playing himself into a max contract?

John Hollinger (12:24 PM)

Harden will either get a max or near-max extension from OKC a year from now, or a max offer sheet as a restricted free agent, but that dude is definitely getting paid.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

From the same chat:

Ryan (Indianapolis)

Would you rather have Eric Gordon for the next 4 years or James Harden?

John Hollinger (12:26 PM)

Harden. Just think he's more creative and has more room to improve.

jallenmorris 34 pts

SammyThunderer It seems like forever ago writers were writing about Harden with things like, "He's a bit out of control.", "He's not quite sure what to do." "The pace of the NBA seems to overwhelm him at times." And now it's "He's a max or near-max player." Wow, what a different. Harden is a stud. I just hope he can stay in an OKC uniform.

andrew35 48 pts

SammyThunderer If James receives the max it will be from another team imo.

Harden has been better than Russ in every facet of the game this year. It's almost disturbing that our 3rd best player is our "designated" one with the 5 year max extension.

f5alcon 273 pts

SammyThunderer We can afford harden at max, but 93% of the cap is durant, harden, westbrook and perkins

Jax Raging Bile Duct 135 pts

SammyThunderer Yikes! I pegged James for 12m, not 15m. But I'm not surprised. He's playing his way into a contract like that.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

Jax Raging Bile Duct It's pretty hard to justify giving him any less than 4/52, right? I mean, 4/50 seems like a discount at this point, even if Harden's TS regresses to closer to 60 (lol at that crazily being a big hit to what he's been putting up)

Jax Raging Bile Duct 135 pts

SammyThunderer I had 4/40 in mind last year, then he goes and improves. I started this year thinking 4/48, but if his whole season is going to hold this trend, he'll be at least 4/52 by the time he can sign an extension. Whew! It was nice knowing you Serge. Good luck in your future endeavors.

SammyThundererJax Raging Bile Duct If Harden plays this way in the playoffs and we make a finals i don't think a max deal is out of the question.

SammyThunderer These are the things I don't like to think about. He really needs to calm down a bit. Play worse, please.

JimboSlice 198 pts

@daniel hawaii

I found our total minutes leading or tied, though I rounded the last minute.

We have led for 684 out of a possible 864 minutes

79% of the time we are in the lead or tied.

There have been only 5 quarters out of 72 where we were behind the whole quarter, which accounts for 1/3 of time when we were behind.

Love is overrated terrible rankings.

walrusmuse 47 pts

why i think Dwight is under KD is take him out of the paint, where he indeed dominates, and his options disappear, and of course FTs. In terms of overall, KD will score wherever, and on the line, but Dwight will not. Still a beast though.

walrusmuse 47 pts

Russ' ranking is pretty fair, and impressive, but I would flip KD and Dwight. Glad K Love is above Blake, that's a fair ranking for them: both strong, but Blake isn't where he could be yet. Where he could be looks a lot like Kevin with more (even more) dynamics in the paint.

Is there anything more annoying than Tramel's insistence on referring to the thunder as 'the boomers'?

walrusmuse 47 pts

anonymous12345 only references to "oak city"

Jax Raging Bile Duct 135 pts

Grolgar 142 pts

f5alconanonymous12345 Tramel is a great writer. He's thoughtful and provocative. He just needs to quit giving everyone silly nicknames.

Jax Raging Bile Duct 135 pts

anonymous12345 The only good thing about Tramel is that every once in a while he has this weird capability to call Jim Traber out and make him look like a fool in front of his face.

Old Man Game 192 pts

anonymous12345 it is seriously the dumbest thing I've ever seen a sportswriter pull. Give it up Tram, it isn't catching on.

ThunderChick2010 207 pts

Not necessarily Tramel, but hearing the guys referred to individually as Thunders--or ThunderERs--sounds strange to my ears.

Fuzzy Logic 19 pts

A coworker who isn't a sports fan asked me today about Tim Tebow and had to endure me ranting on how tired I am of hearing how pure and wholesome Saint Tebow is.

I wonder if those outside of Oklahoma get the same feeling about how humble and genuine Durant is?

Grolgar 142 pts

Fuzzy Logic No. Not the same at all. THe spotlight is much brighter on Tebow.

courtsense 299 pts

Totally agree with Eddie Johnson's assessment of Westbrook: if he ever realizes that 17 pts and 10 assists is better than 20 points and 5 assists, he'll be arguably the best PG in the league. Until then, his judgement will constantly be questioned.

Lost Ones 128 pts

averaging 17 and 10 is not possible with a team of slashers and little to no post game. 7 would be a good number.

sammasaaron 60 pts

courtsense In Westbrook's defense, he was getting mugged most of the game last night and it wasn't being called until the 4th quarter. He needs to learn to keep that from frustrating him and affecting his game, though.
