Friday Bolts – 1.27.12

KD was named the 17th most powerful athlete in the world by Business Week: “This young superstar-in-the-making has notched two seasons as the NBA’s top scorer and led Oklahoma to back-to-back playoff berths. He signed with Nike shortly after the draft and has been courted by other blue chip companies ever since.”

Russell Westbrook was 70th: “The dynamic scoring duo of Kevin Durant (No. 17) and Russell Westbrook announced themselves to the NBA two years ago, when their Oklahoma City Thunder nearly derailed the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship run. This year the Thunder have one of the league’s best records (14-3 as of publication), and Westbrook’s quicksilver drives to the hoop and 20-point average are a big reason why. The Thunder rewarded Westbrook with an $80 million contract extension in mid-January.”

A SportsNation poll has KD right in the MVP mix.

TBJ’s quarterly report.

Dirk Nowitzki: “I haven’t seen one team in the West that I’m scared of,” Nowitzki said. “I really haven’t. I think we can compete with all of them. Oklahoma City has probably the best record, but I think we’ve played them well every time we’ve seen them and everybody else has been up and down.”

Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game in a 5-on-5 says Westbrook’s extension was the best move last week: “Russell Westbrook’s five-year, $80 million extension. Sam Presti made it crystal clear that the Thunder consider Westbrook a star and a cornerstone as he locked up Oklahoma City’s core for the foreseeable future. The money is easily justifiable for a player of Westbrook’s talent and production, and this move had the added benefit of altering the NBA narrative; the annoying (and exaggerated) Westbrook vs. Durant subplot seemed to disappear overnight, as this extension quelled any lingering doubt over Westbrook’s future.”

Scott Brooks on eight of the next nine being on the road: “It’s not easy to win on the road. You go into some hostile environments and we definitely have our hands full the next two weeks … very tough cities to play in. Our guys love challenges. They embrace it. They don’t shy away from it. We don’t have a cockiness to us, we just have a belief.”

What a stupid statement by Dirk. I'm not scared of any team in the West? Why don't you make sure the Mavericks make the playoffs first champ... Then try not to embarrass yourselves in the first round of the playoffs.

jallenmorris 34 pts

ztejas I agree. Their 11-8 record means they SHOULD be scared of some of the teams in the West. Playing close but still losing doesn't mean you have to be scared, but it still means you lost. 4 out of 7 will get you a front row seat to your TV during May and June.

"Oklahoma City has probably the best record, but I think we've played them well every time we've seen them . . . " Every time they've seen us--except for those first three times this season, right?

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 390 pts

ThunderChick2010 we played dallas twice, we one the first game by 2 on KDs buzzer beater, and we lost the second time by 13

At first I just hated Dirk for the way he looks and his knee jerk motion, but REALLY hated Terry, now IT'S ON!!!

I now hated the whole Mav org.....

This David Thorpe interview is great: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=7510545

For as much as I complain about Brooks, this is something he's got down cold, and the reason Presti values him so highly.

Keith00 42 pts

SammyThunderer Interestingly, I think even those against Brooks (myself included) would agree with this. Brooks has a done great job creating an environment conducive to growth, creating an atmosphere where players believed they can improve. My problem, and this is something that was even touched on to some degree, is that Brooks doesn't seem to have enough accountability. Players need rules and boundaries as much as anyone - they are mostly still kids when they come into the league.

Where Brooks has fostered an ability to grow and express talents, I'm not sure he has the acumen to be the strategic dictator that players still need. Look at Ron Adams. When he was there to lay into our guys for missing even the smallest assignment, our defense was fantastic even with lesser individual defenders. Every year since he left we have been worse than the year before. Without the authoritarian, our players have become lax (and it's not even difficult to see that they are not as focused on defense as they have been in the past.

At a certain point we need a Larry Brown (at the extreme example) or Doug Collins (the more measured example). Those coaches demand something of their teams and players, and the players respond to meet those demands. What does Brooks demand of this team besides effort (which is well and good, but not getting the best of the talent available)? I think the kids have grown up a lot, they've been given the room and showed what they can do. What they need now is someone who can round out the rough edges, fit the pieces together, and raise the expectations from simple effort and talent to crisp execution.

Keith00SammyThunderer brooks has a great control of his composure, one of his best attributes. I wouldn't want a coach like stan VG who is the 'master of panic' as Shaq calls him. however Doc Rivers seems like a good balance, a coach who preaches team heart hustle and sacrifice while also being on of the best at drawing up a play. Its no secret brooks needs to improve at either drawing up plays in game time situation, or instituting more of a set offense, or both. And his defensive schemes are poor, I hate how we defend screens, always seem late on rotations and double team the wrong players at the wrong time.

That said, I do like brooks and he's done a great job so far in many respects. He just needs to take 'the leap' and becoming a wizard with a clip board. I am honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet, but I think maybe the lock out kept him from rolling out more new improvements... or at least thats what I'm hoping

Boston's comeback from 27 down was amazing. props to them

OkcBaby Comebacks are great--unless you're on the wrong end of them.

f5alcon 273 pts

dallas plays utah tonight, hopefully the jazz beat them.

sammasaaron 60 pts

Of course Dirk isn't 'scared' of us. Only Jerry Jones admits to being scared of an opposing team. These are professional sports, and if the players don't believe they can win every night then they're in the wrong profession.

imb42 16 pts

Is Dirk really talking while on the disabled list with a fat ass? f off

Sorr20 5 pts

Hey guys, I have a question,.I'm out at School in Utah and want to see the Thunder play the Jazz Feb. 10. My family always had season tickets back in OK, so just curious as to whats the best way to get tickets? Cheap tickets for the nosebleed section?

Grolgar 142 pts

Sorr20 I'd just get some on stubhub. The prices are reasonable. You can get slightly cheaper tickets from scalpers if you haggle, but I don't think the small savings is worth the extra hassle.

SmackDaddy 6 pts

Loud City JimmyGrolgarSorr20 Just get em from stubhub or the Jazz ticket resale site. When we went to GSW and Sacto last year, I called my ticket rep and she told me they couldn't get away game tickets.

Fuzzy Logic 19 pts

Grolgar Sorr20

If you don't mind the possibility of being axe murdered you can try craigslist. I've gotten cheap Sooner tickets on there before. You can also occasionally find good deals on ebay.

If you're going the scalper route be patient. Closer to game time it gets the cheaper they'll go just to unload unsold tickets. If they still have any after tipoff they'll give em away for pennies on the dollar.

Loud City Jimmy 10 pts

I'm getting pretty fed up with the Mavs. Dirk is currently sitting out because he spent too much time partying in the offseason and not enough time in the gym. I am not so sure he needs to be talking trash to anyone right now. There are probably 12 teams that think they are going to the playoffs in the west, but 4 of them aren't and if the season ended today, they Mavs are the 8 seed...by a 1/2 game. Also, Jason Terry is my least favorite player in the NBA...I hope the Thunder read his "big brother little brother" comment every day till May.

f5alcon 273 pts

Loud City Jimmy well we see them next week and can hopefully crush them

anonymous12345 87 pts

Loud City Jimmy They have the 'we're the champs' claim to fall back on for now. If I were Dirk I'd be more concerned with making the playoffs.. Only half a game separates the 6-10 teams so there is a ways to go before he can declare that the title goes through Dallas.

Grolgar 142 pts

Loud City Jimmy I don't think Dirk is wrong and if anyone has earned the right to say that it is him. The Mavs have outplayed us in our 2 games (we were lucky to split) and the rest of the West has been up and down. The way the Mavs have played us in the last year, why would Dirk be scared? We need to go out and prove it.

TaoMaas 58 pts

Grolgar I agree with you. The Mavs are very competitive with the Thunder, so why should Dirk be scared? However, I think the Thunder are better than they were last year while the Mavs may have taken a slight step backwards, but the games will still be close.

Loud City Jimmy 10 pts

Grolgar No doubt Dallas has played their best two games of the year against us, and they certainly earned the right to talk a bit. That doesn't mean I have to like it, and I still think they are more likely to miss the playoffs than play one game in the Western Conference Finals.

Loud City Jimmy 10 pts

Grolgar also...I think I am more offended by the Terry comments than by Dirk saying he isn't scared of anyone in the West.

TaoMaas 58 pts

Grolgar Agreed! I kinda like Dirk. Terry? Eh...not so much.

f5alcon 273 pts

Loud City Jimmy after the whole dancing on our logo thing, i hate jason terry

f5alcon 273 pts

This is not going to be an easy game, it will probably be a shootout, they can score from 3 at a high rate, we are going to have to close out well. David Lee is going to be a handful for perk/ibaka but if we can keep him off the offensive glass we should be ok. They are not good defensively and westbrook, harden and durant will have a field day scoring, hopefully thabo can slow down ellis

ILikePancakes 237 pts

f5alcon Ellis will slow down himself.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 390 pts

ILikePancakesf5alcon ellis has been playing well lately... like 23 points 7 assists well

f5alcon 273 pts

ILikePancakes what? he is a slightly inefficient chucker, but still averaging 21ppg and 7 apg, really the assists scare me more than the points.

Keith00 42 pts

GS isn't a very good team, but they seem exactly the kind of lower tier team that can hurt us. Lee can be a monstrous rebounder, and the whole team won't care how much we score. They will be more than happy to let our offense run around and take jumpers, and will focus entirely on exposing our defense. It's one of those games where we should win, and probably win by 10+, but where it will probably stay close throughout because we'll have a hard time getting strings of stops while at the same time falling into bad habits on offense.

SeanzieCrews 25 pts

A little off topic, but did anyone else think Memphis' jerseys last night were just awful to watch? Yellow tops and green bottoms, not a good mix.

Keith00 42 pts

SeanzieCrews Both sides looked silly, it felt like I was watching a D-III college game.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 390 pts

Keith00SeanzieCrews they looked like the mighty ducks before Gordon Bombay got to em... just plain bad

C_Dub 150 pts

SeanzieCrews that was the craziest sh** I've ever seen in an NBA game. WTH were they thinking when they set all that up? It looked like Memphis was wearing Laker gold with Boston green shorts. And then the Clips....Powder blue? Ugh.

diddoff 96 pts

Ask Dirk again after he got crushed in the first round.

Grolgar 142 pts

diddoff Is this supposed to make sense? They won the title last year. They didn't lose in the 1st round. Are you talking about previous years?

Lasers 52 pts

Grolgardiddoff hmm, probably meant to say "gets crushed.."

ILikePancakes 237 pts

Most of GS's wins are against best teams in the league... in the Oracle. It will be very tough.

JeremyBrewer 12 pts

ILikePancakes I can't wait! I live in the Bay Area now, and only get one game a year. I still haven't drove up to Sacramento for a game, although I should.

RodneyRosavelRusanWilson 390 pts

JeremyBrewerILikePancakes yea I had forgotten that we are like 3-12 in the oracle or something crazy like that... I think we lost our past two games there... i think this is an important one to win, start the road trip up on the right track...
