Thursday Bolts – 12.8.11

Bill Simmons on trading Russell Westbrook for Chris Paul: “New Orleans says yes; Oklahoma City says no; Chris Paul probably says, “I loved my time in Oklahoma City, but I’d rather live in a big city, thanks anyway.” Besides, the Zombies can’t give up on the Westbrook/Durant partnership yet, even if there’s mounting evidence that Westbrook has real bitterness about becoming the public fall guy during last spring’s loss to Dallas. I continue to think we might be headed for an Avon/Stringer situation here … but both guys are so talented that you need one more year (and maybe a different coach) before you pick one over the other. (And by the way, the Zombies are picking Durant.)”

Chris Mannix talked with trainer Rob McClanaghan who works with Westbrook: “Polishing Westbrook’s pull-up jump shot was a point of emphasis this summer. Because Westbrook is so explosive in the open floor, it has been difficult for him over his first three seasons to knock down pull-ups in transition. Every day, McClanaghan ran Westbrook through pull-up drills. First, he would start at the opposite baseline. Then from ¾ court. Then from halfcourt. When Westbrook got to the foul line, he would stop on a dime, pull up and shoot … In addition to the pull-up, McClanaghan and Westbrook worked on a floater. While Westbrook is spectacular at finishing at the rim, he shot a career-low 26.6 percent from three-to-nine feet out, according to Hoopdata.com. Post moves were emphasized, too. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds Westbrook has superior size for his position. With McClanaghan, Westbrook worked on a variety of power moves and turnaround shots.”

Westbrook’s mechanics have dramatically improved. I wrote about that in June.

Darnell Mayberry on Westbrook’s progression: “The next step in Westbrook’s progression, in my opinion (and assuming he’s got these things down), is a better change of pace. But you can’t get everything down in one offseason, no matter how long it lasts?”

Berry Tramel has scheduling conflicts: “Jan. 2: The OSU-Stanford Fiesta Bowl. The Thunder plays at Dallas that night. Lots of channel flipping. If you want to DVR one game and watch it later, tape the football game. Fox Sports Oklahoma might not spoil the Fiesta Bowl for you. ESPN most definitely will spoil Thunder-Mavs for you.”

An ESPN panel talks about what teams could break through. And of note: Magic Johnson says Kevin Durant is the best player in the game.

Darnell Mayberry on Westbrook’s extension: “If you evaluated Westbrook over his first three seasons, examining him solely on his statistical production alongside other young elite guards like Paul, Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo, you’ll find that Westbrook’s first three seasons have been on par with the game’s best. These numbers, no doubt, will be used as a bargaining chip by Westbrook’s camp when negotiations begin in earnest.”

The NBA made some major rule changes. Ric Bucher of ESPN.com: “Rip-through” moves, in which an offensive player swings the ball into a defender’s outstretched arm and then attempts a shot once he has created contact, will be considered non-shooting fouls if the contact begins before the offensive player starts his shooting motion. Also, on drives to the basket, a shooting foul will be called only if contact occurs after the offensive player has begun his shooting motion, not after he has initiated his leap toward the basket.”

And Shane Battier signs with the Heat. So much for that.

I kind of hate this time of season. The Thunder are so tight lipped that we never get the juicy rumors, and we really start to see how shallow the players are. Dwight, just come to OKC - win a handful of championships and people will remember YOU, not Shaq, when they think of greatest bigs. Why must everyone be seduced by the lights of LA?

Espn reports Tyson Chandler will sign with NY Knicks.

JimboSlice 198 pts

ThunderKid89 I kind of like this. Good for them, but also will put a serious cap damper on any CP3 to the knicks ideas

Keith00 42 pts

ThunderKid89 I assume they'll have to amnesty Billups and trade Balkman? He would be a great fit given their needs. But yeah, basically takes them completely out of the Dwight/Paul/Williams game.

JimboSlice 198 pts

Keith00ThunderKid89 ew ok I lied. If they amnesty Billups I don't like the idea anymore.

f5alcon 273 pts

ThunderKid89 Good move for them, now amare goes back to being a PF full time.

I really think working out with a trainer during the lockout instead of doing tournament after tournament is really going to pay off for RW.

Keith00 42 pts

anonymous12345 We all hope so. But he also had very different weaknesses than Durant. Westbrook's weaknesses are fundamentals weaknesses (shooting, defense, seeing the floor). Durant's weaknesses are in-game foibles (driving into defenders, getting open when teams are trying to defend you). Both could come back improved, but Westbrook simply had more areas a trainer could fix.

I didn't mean to imply what KD did was wrong. I'm just glad Westbrook didn't do the same for the reasons you mentioned.

Keith00 42 pts

anonymous12345 Agreed, a summer circuit tour for Westbrook would probably just have reinforced his bad habits.

Fellas, check out the video of Griffen giving Simmons the business about how he cheers for the Clippers. Pretty funny stuff.

SammyThunderer 759 pts

Wade/James/Battier/Bosh/Anthony is a pretty insane defensive lineup.

scary_larry 7 pts

SammyThunderer What about healthy knees line up? Can Wade, Bosh, and Battier take the brutal game by game blows every other day?

ThunderKid89 8 pts

I wanted the Thunder to sign Battier, but at least he signed with an Eastern Conference team which means two things.
1. Memphis will not give us near as much trouble
2. Durantula won't see him in the playoffs until the Finals. (and if we make it that far, I don't care who guards him! It'll be sweetness!

Keith00 42 pts

ThunderKid89 Why does Battier moving on appreciably change our game against Memphis? For one, Tony Allen was the best KD defender, not Battier. For two, Memphis has Gay back, so Battier would barely have played even if he had been retained.

I think we are seriously overestimating how good Battier is.

f5alcon 273 pts

Keith00ThunderKid89 yeah battier is overrated, but memphis ist still worse off without him, i just hope somebody takes gasol from them and they trade gay for monta ellis.

Keith00 42 pts

f5alconThunderKid89 Now THAT would be a big boon for us. Losing Battier, in my mind, has almost no bearing on how we stack up to them. I fear KD won't get open against Allen, and I fear Gay will be the legitimate scoring threat outside the post they were sorely lacking. Battier was an afterthought for most of our games against the Grizz, as he is no longer the defender he once was.

But man, I really hope they lose Gasol (and preferably to an East team). We were getting carved up in the post. Now, hopefully Ibaka and Perkins are more able than they were last year as well, but I would rather not face a Memphis team with Gay-Randolph-Gasol. I honestly don't think our team from last year would have beaten that team.

DXL 30 pts

The Heat are paying for past production with Battier, his reputation. He hasn't been a no-stats all-star the last couple of years. His non-traditional stats, plus-minus, win-shares, etc. have not been particularly good.

I don't want to see Westbrook with the pull-up. It's an inefficient shot. There was a great article comparing Westbrook to Tony Parker, which showed how Westbrook needs to take advantage of cutting to the basket without the ball. He needs to do more of what he's good at, finishing at the rim, and less of what he's awful at, mid-range jumpers off the dribble.

Keith00 42 pts

DXL There is a place for the pull-up, but only if he is considerably more effective with it. There are guys who hit that shot in the mid to high 40%s, Westbrook just isn't one of them. I do agree that he should be focusing more on maximizing his talents than mitigating an otherwise easily corrected weakness (stop taking those shots). But, maximizing his strengths is as much about the offensive scheme as his individual play. He can't play off the ball with our current starters because there is NO ONE else that can be counted on to take care of the ball and make smart passes. That could change with Harden, but then still needs to change with Brooks in utilizing the players available.

thunderstruck87 75 pts

DXL Still I think that's a pretty good grab by the heat... They are gonna be a good defensive team... I think that helps them before it hurts them for sure

Keith00 42 pts

ThebestchristmaspresentDXL I kind of feel like Battier is a luxury they didn't need to afford. His defense is a plus, but it's not nearly as good as it was - we are overreacting to his play against KD because KD is so bad at getting open. Further, they obviously see him as a spot up shooter to go along with Wade-Lebron. But, they already have spot up shooters - good ones. Battier isn't going to defend the opponent's best when it matters anyway, that's what Lebron does better than anyone.

JimboSlice 198 pts

Keith00ThebestchristmaspresentDXL I think it was a good pickup for them. He's the best they were going to get for their money from a financial standpoint. His defensive abilities will be used against second option wing guys, and more importantly possibly, is it makes a Mike Miller amnesty an option that won't hurt them in any possible way. I still think we beat them either way with our post-trade deadline team more times than not.

divisadero 10 pts

". . . even if there’s mounting evidence that Westbrook has real bitterness about becoming the public fall guy during last spring’s loss to Dallas."

I like Simmons, but his relentless effort to fit this square peg into the round hole of his Stringer-v.-Avon mythology is getting tiresome. What evidence? I follow Westbrook-related news fairly closely and haven't seen any evidence of discontent, much less "mounting" evidence. Am I missing something?

eddy curry to the heat... this is their secret weapon...

JimboSlice 198 pts

.... or (the more likely scenario) he doesn't play a single game and comes into camp at 500 pounds

okcjim 23 pts

oops you've got that in there. sorry

f5alcon 273 pts

okcjim I like the new rules. though no more rip move for durant, that is a non shooting foul now, also drives to the basket are not automatic shooting fouls if the foul occurs before the shot attempt.

Keith00 42 pts

f5alconokcjim That second part could seriously cut into Lebron and Wade's free throw attempts. How many times do they get fouled early and take an entire other step or two before taking a shot and subsequently getting 2 free throws or an and-1.

f5alcon 273 pts

Keith00okcjim yeah, so basically makes it more fair to play miami. Really the only thing that i wish that they added is anti flopping rules

scary_larry 7 pts

f5alconKeith00okcjim How are the refs going to differentiate the moves? I understand the steps with wade and lbj, but kd's rip move is so fluid and it seems almost a part of his shot.

f5alcon 273 pts

scary_larryKeith00okcjim There is a difference between a normal jumpshot and the rip move, and it still is a foul just not a shooting one, so if he rips it can get players in foul trouble and still could get shots if they are in the penalty, just not ripping to get 3 free throws anymore.

JimboSlice 198 pts

Keith00f5alconokcjim I don't like this rule because I think it is seriously going to backfire and go completely against its purpose. Superstars will still end up getting superstar calls, and the gap between superstar calls and regular players will end up growing instead of the intended narrowing in the gap.

GeoLogger 29 pts

JimboSliceKeith00f5alconokcjim Jimbo ; why do you think that

Hubbeljp 9 pts

I thought I was the only one who noticed Russell Westbrook had a tendency to "lean" during his pull up jumpers. His pull-up was already nasty last year, can't wait to see his consistency improve with better balance. I think him learning the floater may be bad though... I see too many attempts and not enough dishes to the open man.

Daniel Plainview 44 pts

Although Im from Michigan, Ive been touting Brandon Weedens season as far better one than ANdrew Lucks. Most people I talk to up here, feel the same. Its a shame hes wasnt invited to NY.

Keith00 42 pts

Daniel Plainview Weeden's year was worthy of Heisman votes. But, I think the voters had a bias against him due to his age. And not to take the easy ESPN stance, but Luck didn't have much receiving talent around him and played in a run-first scheme. Weeden had the best WR in the nation, a pass-wacky offense, and still had fewer TDs than Luck. His yardage total isn't particularly special since he threw the ball almost 150 more times than Luck.

Keith00 42 pts

The question is, is KD starting his shot as he goes through the defender's hands? He certainly isn't intending a dribble or pass at that point. But also of note is that it is still a foul, just not a shooting foul. I have a feeling good defenders will make apt use of this, while good free throw shooters will still use it to get the opponents closer to the per-quarter non-shot limit. Moreover, I think the difference between what is shooting motion and what is not will have a lot to do with reputation.

shiki 67 pts

Can Heat sign a decent center After they get Shane Battier?

diddoff 96 pts

shiki They still have the bi-annual exception with 1.9 per year over 2 years and they still can sign minimum contracts.

Keith00 42 pts

shiki So maybe... but probably not. Expect more Bosh at center (where he is actually quite good).

diddoff 96 pts

Keith00shiki Sam Amick reports Battier only gets 3 Mio. So they also have 2 Mio MLE left. Doesn't change much though.

shiki 67 pts

diddoffKeith00

It is said Hayes will get $20M/4yrs from Kings.Maybe Heat only have chance to sign Kwame Brown or Joel Przybilla.

Of course they have a great small ball lineup now.
