3-on-3: First things first

When the NBA officially re-opens for business on Dec. 9, the Thunder will have work to do. Russell Westbrook needs and extension, a decision needs to be made on Daequan Cook and the front office can start surveying the free agent crop. So what should, or will, the Thunder do come Dec. 9?

Fact or Fiction: The Thunder should be players in free agency.

Royce Young, Daily Thunder: Fiction. I’m on record as saying that I’m a fan of the idea of going after Shane Battier, but with so much to take care of in the future with Westbrook, Harden and Ibaka (and even Maynor), committing to players that you don’t necessarily need isn’t wise. And we all know that Sam Presti pretty much sticks to what is wise.

Patrick James, Daily Thunder: Fiction. For who? There’s no one out there who makes sense from a basketball and financial standpoint who will be better than the young players Oklahoma City still has to lock up. A veteran offensive presence like Jamal Crawford or defensive guy like Shane Battier would be nice, but those guys will likely command the kind of money, and maybe years, that could hinder re-signing James Harden or Serge Ibaka.

Joe Newell, Daily Thunder: Fiction. The roster is essentially set. There wouldn’t be much benefit from what is available in Free Agency. Granted there are some very nice players available (Nene, Chandler, Afflalo etc.) outside of one or two, most aren’t upgrades for us. Guys like Shane Battier or Mike Dunleavy would have a small role on the team unless there was an injury. So, with a handful of guys ready for extensions within the next year, I say keep your powder dry.

Fact or Fiction: The Thunder should re-sign Daequan Cook.

Royce Young: Fact. But it’s not just cut-and-dry. There are always shooters out in the market. There are always guys that you can play for 8-10 minutes a game and stuff in a corner 3 spot and tell to shoot when open. But Cook was a good fit last season from a culture and personality standpoint. But still, OKC is going to have to pay him something like $3 million to keep him and that eats away pretty much all the cap room they’ve got. So if you want to make a splash with someone else, Cook might have to go.

Patrick James: Fact. As long as no one signs him to a ridiculous offer sheet. Cook provided much-needed bench offense as a shooter, and it’s unlikely the Thunder could find the same impact at a reasonable price from someone who is also clearly a great fit in the locker room. Cook has found a niche on this roster, so the Thunder should keep him if the price is right.

Joe Newell: Fact. I’m a little on the fence on this one. Cook’s QO is for $3.1 Million. That’s a lot of money. Cook did a great job last year as a decent defender but especially a three ball specialist off the bench. Every team can use that. But what bothers me is that it was far and away his best pro season shooting the 3. So much so it may be an outlier. Will we as happy with him next year if he’s shooting .340 or so from deep?

Fact or Fiction: Russell Westbrook should get a max extension.

Royce Young: Fiction. The way the question is, “should” is a key word. Will he? Yeah, probably, but that’s just how it goes. Joe Johnson shouldn’t have gotten a max deal. Same for Rudy Gay. But they do because that’s what the market determines. Westbrook probably feels he’s max money material and that’s what he’s going to want. But to me, while Westbrook is a fantastic player and certainly worthy of big dollars, max money is for the LeBron’s, Durant’s, Duncan’s and Kobe’s of the world. That’s what you give to the franchise cornerstone. And whether Westbrook likes it or not, Durant’s the cornerstone.

Patrick James: Fact. A max deal might be a little steep for Westbrook, but so what? Has anyone noticed this trend of guys flocking to big city teams? When you’re in a market like OKC and you have a chance to lock up a guy who looks like a perennial All-Star, you do it. It might make it more difficult to retain both Harden and Ibaka, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. That’s where “In Presti we Trust” comes in. You sign Westbrook while you can and ask questions later.

Joe Newell: Fiction. Russ is a stud, but a step below a max player. He’s led the league twice in three seasons in turnovers and he was fifth in the league in usage (Durant was eighth). That being said, he is arguably as good as any PG in the league in his own way. Presti should go to Westbrook with his calculator in hand and explain that taking a little off a max deal will allow the team to re-sign Ibaka, Harden, Maynor etc and be in contention for many years to come.

Good ol'e Russ will demand the max initially, but I feel he will back off enough to allow the team to keep its core players together. We are championship caliber right now, and as stubborn as RW can be, even he can see that.

What's to stop Westbrook from signing a contract below max and having him do advertising for Chesapeake for money that would pay him over the max? I never understood how the NBA could stop players from getting under the table deals in the markets the teams are in. If doing advertising for money is legal I'm not sure how it could be stopped?

Joe_ 18 pts

okcjim I like it. Don't know if it's legal. In fact I'd bet it's not, but I also know that Karl Malone and John Stockton got into the car dealership business....Which then team owner Larry Miller dominated in SLC for years. Interesting eh?

But more to point. If Russ makes 14 mill per year on average for 5 years, instead of 15.5 or so, I believe it can be explained to him that that extra 7.5 mill he is sacrificing will more than be made up in endorsements if he is continually on a winning playoff team, and as an aside, one way to keep the team winning is to use that extra 7.5 mill on signing top notch players to fill out the roster so that the team is stocked with them ....a circle.

To me that is reasonable. If the pot needs to be sweetened, you can offer him a trade kicker, or an ETO after a few years or something to ease his mind that the Thunder WILL BE ABOUT WINNING and the money will be used to keep the roster stocked.

So are we able to "Collison" anyone this year (i.e. Westbrook)? Give him a big bonus this year to get us up to the cap to lessen the cap hit every other year of the contract? Or are we going to be too close to make that worthwhile? Thus he could still be a "max" guy without nailing us for a max contract amount against the cap every year...if that's possible this year in this CBA.

Like Jimbo, Joe's last comment was my favorite. I am optimistic that we can sign Russ for a little less than a max contract and still be offering more money than any other team could offer. Whether he signs an extension or not, we could still match whatever he is offered next summer as a restricted FA. I also think we will be able to land Battier without compromising our financial situation by trimming non guaranteed contracts, using amnesty on Nate, and working a Collison like deal where Shane gets almost all of his $ up front.

Steve H 30 pts

finish1ine I saw that too- Why on earth would Presti buy him out (wouldn't salary still count against cap?), when they could use the amnesty provision that would clear his salary entirely? They would get reimbursed for whatever amount Nate is ultimately signed for off of waivers- I don't see how they could buy him out for less than they would recoup that way. Maybe the author got it wrong and mistakenly called his amnesty release a buy out?

dancassidy35 58 pts

Steve Hfinish1ine Is the amnesty only allowed to be applied this year? If not this is smart thinking by Presti. Nate has a small enough contract that IMO it makes more sense to just buy him out and keep the amnesty handy just in case.

It can be applied anytime in the next 5 years to a salary signed in the last CBA. However that means durant and perkins are the only other players worth amnestying. Obviously not durant, so unless they plan to keep it in case perkins is still not healthy and they can make him go away, it doesnt make sense.

dancassidy35 58 pts

f5alconSteve Hfinish1ine Would it apply if we made a trade for someone else's contract signed in the last CBA?

f5alcon 273 pts

finish1ine buying out nate rob probably means we are doing something in free agency. and probably means ivey is not coming back either.

So the roster is

PG westbrook, maynor, reggie jackson

SG thabo, harden, (cook is probable)

SF durant

PF ibaka, collison

C perkins, nazr, aldrich, mullens

dancassidy35 58 pts

I'm a believer in Thabo. I think he's going to surprise people a little bit this year (just a little bit). While I agree Battier would be an improvement over him, he's not worth the cost with Harden and Ibaka needing to be paid.

Anyone else thinking that Maynor isn't going to be with us past this year? I just don't think we will be able to afford him. I wouldn't be surprised to see Reggie Jackson take the back-up PG spot.

On another note, love the 3 on 3 articles guys. I'd love to see it become a weekly thing.

I hope they can sign Russ for the right price. Otherwise, he might become trade-bait next year when it comes time to sign Ibaka and Harden. KD is really the only one who's safe, IMHO. I think any of the other three might be traded for some combination involving a top 5 draft pick, if things become too expensive over the next few years.

Or ownership just takes the financial hit and pays the guys they drafted whatever is reasonable to keep them altogether. There's always that option. I mean if we're going to ask people to make a financial sacrifice to keep a team together, might as well ask the guys with the biggest bucks to make the contribution.

Daniel Hawaii 208 pts

Jax Raging Bile Duct I've always wondered how deep the pockets of our owners were. I don't know much about Clay Bennett or the ownership group. I know they aren't Paul Allen, Mark Cuban or Mikhail Prokorov, but are they pretty wealthy? Could we stray into luxury tax territory if necessary to keep our core together?

JimboSlice 198 pts

Joe I really like your last comment. For as "Selfish" as Russ gets portrayed by the media, the guy is a winner. I don't think he's as gung ho about Harden as we are (at this point. I'm sure he will be as they play more minutes together), but coming to him and saying "look, we love you. We think you're a max guy. But if we shave this small bit off of max, we get to keep Serge and James and win a whole lot of championships", I don't see him turning it down. His agent might be a different story, but as far as Russ goes, I think he'll take slightly less than max (and maybe a slightly shorter contract so he can negotiate max for the 30% instead of 25% sooner) to win chips.

f5alcon 273 pts

JimboSlice he can get max 30% now under the new CBA because he was an allstar in his first 3 years.

Daniel Hawaii 208 pts

f5alcon Where did you see this? I read the entire memo of the new CBA and didn't see this. The only 3 ways a player under 6 years of service can get a max contract extension is 1) if he makes 2 All-NBA teams (Russ only one) 2) is named an NBA All-Star game starter twice (Russ none) 3) is named NBA MVP.

"Presti should go to Westbrook with his calculator in hand and explain that taking a little off a max deal will allow the team to re-sign Ibaka, Harden, Maynor etc and be in contention for many years to come."This is exactly how I feel. I do truly hope that Presti can explain to Russ and his agent the importance of being able to re-sign those other guys. I think our team wants to stay together. I know everyone wants their own pay day, but I feel like our guys love each other enough and know that they have something special enough that they would take a little less to keep the band together. Does the NBA allow for restructuring contracts? Cause if it does, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see KD take less money to keep Serge and Harden.
