Thursday Bolts – 7.28.11

J.A. Adande of ESPN.com on James Harden: “Does any team need the 2011-12 NBA season to happen more than the Oklahoma City Thunder? If this year gets lost it would be like the projector breaking during the hotel sequence in “Inception” — there’s still another level to go. That’s all I could think about while watching James Harden play in the Real Run earlier this week. Harden’s creamsicle-orange Nikes were the only familiar aspect of his attire; nothing about that black uniform said “Thunder.” But watching Harden’s combination of deep 3s and drives to the hoop reminded me of how much fun that Thunder playoff run was, of how close they came to reaching the NBA Finals (like the Heat they won two games against the Mavericks and were within a couple minutes of winning two more).”

KD told SI that he’s 50-50 about playing overseas: “Last weekend he traveled to the Philippines with Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Derrick Rose, among others, to play in a series of exhibition games. While there, players discussed the possibility of looking overseas for work during the lockout. Like many players, Durant said it’s “50-50″ that he’d play overseas, but he won’t make any decisions until at least September. “I love playing in the States,” he said. “But I want to play somewhere. If you have an opportunity to [play overseas], it’s something you have to think about.”

Chris Palmer of ESPN.com ranks Durant second behind LeBron: “Durant is the purest scorer in the league and one of its most versatile shooters. He uses an extensive repertoire of shots to score in every conceivable fashion. Just by looking at him, it’s easy to see his best attribute: those long arms. His wiry length allows him to get off that silky jumper with little fear of having it blocked. Even with a casual jump on his pull-up he can release the ball above rim height.”

Nate Tibbetts will be coaching the D-League in the Pan-Am Games: “With the 2011 Pan American Games less than three months off, USA Basketball and the NBA Development League today announced plans that call for the USA Men’s Pan American Games Team roster to be comprised of coaches and players from the NBA Development League. USA Basketball also announced that Tulsa 66ers head coach Nate Tibbetts has been selected to serve as the USA’s head coach and that 66ers assistant coach Dale Osbourne will fill one of the team’s two assistant coach positions. One additional assistant coach and the players who will contend for roster positions will be announced at a later date.”

Billy Hunter seems prepared for a lost season. But with negotiations starting next week, Ben Golliver of CBSSports.com looks at the stakes: “As we look ahead to next week’s negotiation, the critical question becomes: Will the NBA publicly budge on anything? Will we find out that the time away from the negotiating table and the dead month of news — without a free agency period — made the league come to its senses about the harm it is doing to its reputation and the future of the game? Or, will the league come back even more entrenched, feeling empowered because international clubs haven’t exactly been lining up to cherry-pick NBA stars? Hunter, and the players, seem ready for the give and take. The league, at this point, just seems happy to take. Let’s hope that finally changes, after all these years.”

Technique of the week is going straight up.

Serge Ibaka got one vote for most promising power forward on ESPN’s 5-on-5 from some guy on Facebook: “It has to be Serge “ima block ya” Ibaka! Led playoffs in total blocked shots, has good range on his jump shot, humble and team-first kind of guy, not to mention his outstanding community service work all over the world! Now that he is a Spanish citizen expect his game to evolve!”

A Thunder fan begging for the owners and players to get something resolved (some PG-13 language): “Just don’t let this season get cancelled. Don’t let this season get shortened. Let a disgruntled and oft disgusted Okie be proud of his state, his city. Let them play. David, you gotta do this man. You and the owners, do what you have to do. We need those sick nasty Westbrook to KD alley oops to feel alive. We need that taste of $1 awful keg beers in Thunder Alley. We need to see the expression on Serge Ibaka’s face when he smacks a ball out of the air like it was his red headed step kid telling him to go fuck himself. We need to see that Kendrick Perkins’ death stare that can make your head do the Scanners thing if you look for too long.”

Just saw the new O. State FB unis and it got me to thinking.

It would be nice if the organization threw us fans a bone during the lockout and unveiled a set of alternate uniforms. This is something a large group of fans care about. The arena name, not so much.

Jax Raging Bile Duct :@JoeIt’s true that Blake isn’t a great outside scorer. But in the end, if you take Blake and Pau and put them in the same offensive situation, you’ll probably end up with lots of chances to dunk the ball for Blake, and only a small portion of those chances would end with a dunk for Pau.

That's a great point.

@ Crow
Agreed. Ironically, I started following the Thunder in earnest because of the dearth of NFL news during its lockout only to become an NBA fan right before this lockout. I'm hoping they get their act together before games are lost like the NFL, but it hasn't looked promising so far.

They could do it in Vegas and get casino / hotels as sponsors and the cams could follow the players back to the casinos and hotels for embedded sponsor product placements. endorsements.

I'd rather have the real league and mention this mainly as a way to weaken the idea that a long lockout is the way to go to break the players. I'd rather have a reasonable & fair settlement.

Crow :A reality TV show where player captains pick a team and they play 21 for $100k or $500k and they jaw back n forth on live TV might be another intermediate intensity option. Maybe it could be a series / tournament instead of a season.

I really like this idea, it's a lot of fun to watch superstars play streetball. Plus, it would be better than 90% of other reality programming by default.

@Joe

It's true that Blake isn't a great outside scorer. But in the end, if you take Blake and Pau and put them in the same offensive situation, you'll probably end up with lots of chances to dunk the ball for Blake, and only a small portion of those chances would end with a dunk for Pau. And it doesn't matter how good a shooter Pau is, you want him taking the dunk.

That's why Blake is considered an elite scorer. However, if he does not improve his outside range like you're talking about, then the day he loses his surplus of athleticism, he'll be an average scorer at best.

Jax Raging Bile Duct :@aknikeWhy do all those 5-on-5 guys say Blake griffin can score at an elite level?TS% mostly. And the dunk is the highest efficiency shot in basketball, and Blake dunks in droves.Check this player comparison for last season between Blake, Dirk and Zbo. http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm... out his usage, true shooting %, and points per game. He’s right there with the two best PF’s in the game.

He is really good at putting the ball in the hole inside of ten feet. But he takes about 5.6 shots per game outside of that range where he shoots 33% or below.

Every player has weaknesses and strengths; I think he will hit more of those shots as his career progresses, but for now, I would let him jack those all day long, quite unlike Z-bo and Dirk, who nailed those in Ibakas face in the playoffs. Though it should be pointed out that Z-bo historically and statistically isn't that much better from mid range or deep than Blake, but he was nails against us in the playoffs it seemed.

They could have a fan picked to "win" a share of earnings to try to win an audience... and win support for them over the NBA owners.

They could try to get sponsors for the prizes as well as selling TV ads and tickets and merchandising. Each week or day part of the prize could be a secret revealed at the end of the show. $10k worth of stuff from the Home Depot to the winning players or Best Buy or whatever.

A reality TV show where player captains pick a team and they play 21 for $100k or $500k and they jaw back n forth on live TV might be another intermediate intensity option. Maybe it could be a series / tournament instead of a season.

A nationwide tour with some stars and their friends to fill out the rosters is more likely than something cast as a player's league but I guess it could grow organically from pro-Am to tour(s) to a player's league.

The biggest arguments against trying a player's league are that the lockout is only going to be temporary and that the eventual deal won't be that bad. Time will tell if those assumptions were right or were right to totally rely upon.

@ Crow
You think there's any shot of something like a players' league growing organically from the Drew League/Goodman League matchup? Perhaps a nationwide tour in the same vein as And-one or the Globetrotters?

A smaller revenue player's league with fewer owners or only one or a league they owned directly wouldn't have to give as large a share of revenue to the owners so the player's cut of that smaller pie might look pretty good, especially compared to nothing or just a couple dozen going overseas.

Jax Raging Bile Duct :Adande has us winning two games against the Mavs in the WCF.
I know it’s been a few weeks, but I mean, it wasn’t THAT long ago J.J.

I prefer Adande's recollection. That's now my rememberance, as well.

In the above I was just referring to a 1 season temp league but I still wonder if Magic Johnson could swoop in and start the Magic league and perhaps make a go of it or at least get a buyout or merger deal out of it, if run well.

They could all design their own jerseys and sell them and keep all that money.

If Billy Hunter has known about Stern's intent to lockout the players out and do so for a full season to get major concessions since 2007, what if anything has the union done to explore the option of creating a player's league in the face of that prospect? I would have done a thorough research of that, talking to cable and corporate sponsors (including shoe companies) and the various arenas not totally controlled by the NBA. Could they pull off something the scale of the real NBA maybe not but could they pull off something with 1/3 to 1/2 the revenues? Maybe. I'll at least have looked at it real hard in addition to the oversold go overseas option. For the paychecks and for the negotiating response to Stern's biggest weapon.

@ Jax Raging Bile Duct
I've also noticed a lot of writers seem to think the Thunder took the Lakers to game 7 in the 2010 playoffs.

The redneck that wrote that last item is one of the last people in this state anyone should listen to. He thinks that OK gets a bad rap...well he's not helping matters at all. Profanity to that degree does not help you make a point, it only makes you look like an uneducated idiot.

The good thing about the Adande article is that it tells us Harden is focusing on conditioning during the lockout. If that's true... Look out NBA.

Why do all those 5-on-5 guys say Blake griffin can score at an elite level? He can't jump shoot well at all, Kevin Love definitely is better than him as an over all player. Everyone is being influenced by all the highlights. Have you ever seen any blake griffin play outside of the key on sportscenter?? Not saying he's bad, i just feel like he belongs closer to the overrated section than the most promising. I think he's already reached all he's capable of.

Serge is listed as one of the best in the nba at going straight up in that article. I beg to differ

I feel the same as that fan. In fact, Im in total denial about a possible lost season. first handful of games lost? if we have to, But lets get to work on a CBA now rather than later. enough of the posturing.

Adande has us winning two games against the Mavs in the WCF.

I know it's been a few weeks, but I mean, it wasn't THAT long ago J.J.

Man, all this "reporting" on players going to play overseas is getting annoying. I am sure the players union is paying the media outlets to ask this question, because it is obvious ALL the players are going to say they can see themselves playing overseas. The players union would have a stern talking to a player if they said otherwise, just like what happened to KD when he said he didn't even realize the lockout was about to start. The next day he had a whole speech about how important this was, haha.
