Durant on the lockout: Players aren’t giving in

Kevin Durant is the Thunder’s union representative, however he hasn’t been present at any of bargaining sessions. He regrets that, but still said he’s been in the loop through email and teammate Nick Collison, who has filled in for him.

He spoke to reporters today following the wrap of his basketball camp and shortly after the league announced a lockout was coming and said the players weren’t about to back down. Via the AP:

“We’re going to stand up for what we have to do, no matter how long it’s going to take,” Durant told The Associated Press after the conclusion of his two-day youth basketball camp. “No matter how long the lockout’s going to take, we’re going to stand up. We’re not going to give in.”

[...]

Durant acknowledged “it might have to take all the way up until maybe December or January” — meaning the start of the NBA season in October would be jeopardized — but the players are committed to getting a CBA they feel is fair.

“The way the CBA worked before is something we really liked. There’s no need to change it,” Durant told AP. “Things have been going very well for us, as far as the league, revenue and things like that are concerned. We want to stick with that pace, but of course the owners want to go a different way with it.

“We’re going to stick with it until we come out with a good deal.”

The Thunder are opening their brand new practice facility soon, but players won’t get a taste of it. Durant said he toured it last night, but that’ll be the last time he steps inside for a while as the league will physically lock players out starting at 12:01 a.m.

“All we can do is continue to just keep praying that we get things done quickly and we just move on with what we have to do, and not let the fans suffer more than they have to as far as not watching us play,” Durant said. “I think as players we’re really hurting, too, if we can’t play basketball. It’s already hurting me that I can’t be able to talk to my coaches, GMs and the guys that work for the team.”

By the sound of it, it could be a lot longer before you’re talking to any of them.

@Power Serge
Guess my Sarcasm and humor wasnt emplied strong enough. Sammasaaron got it right.
The only blog reading losers are the ones that read the Heat Blogs (Sarcasm emplied). There is that better? Im just like everyone else. Ready to kick some Ass too and support TEAM THUNDER. Happy Independence Day All!

The owners need to get their house in order. If they had anything resembling a unified profit sharing, they wouldn't have many of the problems they do. If they didn't hire people who made bad decisions, they wouldn't constantly be in win or lose money mode. The owners need to restructure their own system before dumping everything on the players.

That said, NBA players are not nearly as entitled as they seem to think. Fully guaranteed contracts aren't necessary, and if the players trusted their own ability, they wouldn't need them. Players need to account for their own brethren that flame out or injure their production through personal decisions. They also need to accept that NBA owners are billionaires, that they don't EVER have to cave. I'm sure the NBA Players Union likes to think of itself on equal footing with the owners, but it's not and never will be. The players need to find a better system other than telling the owners, "You figure it out, we like getting paid."

@ Power Serge@kennethg0523
was being sarcastic. No need to get upset.

@ kennethg0523
The lockout is boring huh? Why dont you start your own blog about what the players do during the summer, Ill bet you get tons of followers... You call us losers, but you want to know what the players do when not playing basketball. I could care less about what they do in their free time, I just want them to kick ass when and if the season starts. jeez...

I have 2 words about the lockout.... Bor Ing.
Man, what losers set around and post on these blogs all day. Like anybody cares what you have to say... Doh! Wait a minute, except my post of course everybody wants to read. Of course. We need some Entertainment. Royce, please blog something cool. Maybe what all of the players are up to this summer that we havnt heard about yet.

@ TaoMaas
I also wouldn't be surprised if Nick knows more about the CBA than some of the owners.

@crow

Maybe make the tax progressive, the farther over the cap the more teams pay, first $5MM dollar to dollar then 1.25 to a dollar over and so on for every 5mm over and start the tax at a lower rate maybe 3 million over the cap.

I laughed at the line about Collison filling in for KD. Nick...always doing what needs to be done. Damn, I'm glad he's on our team!

KD played one-on-one with Reggie Jackson and gives his assement.

Government taxes may kick in soon? Could be something they are preparing for.

If the super luxury tax is too severe if it could be a stand-in for a true hard cap or fail to raise enough revenue sharing money. Setting the right threshold and tax levels would take careful study but they probably could be found based a lot of past behavior.

A super luxury tax avoids a true hard cap, gets more money for revenue-sharing and lets big spenders inflect it on themselves so they can't as easily say other teams are stealing their money and if they want to push the pedal to the floor to contend they can still go for it. None of the actors are pushing for it now but it might be part of an acceptable solution.

i think they said they would be paying interest on the money we paid for our season tickets, hopefully better than the garbage banks are paying

@ okc baby Thanks! The double spin move is pretty sick..

and KD should definitely grow out a nasty goatee or something creative hah.

@ okc baby
that move was sick. nene just stood there like oh yeah, taking a ...hey were is he going :P lol

@ fantastiksports

that will be interesting. i heard harden told him he couldnt grow one out lol.

one maybe positive thing about this lock out is it gives perk some more time to get healthy. And dont think for a second that these guys still wont practice basketball. Im sure they will find a way ;)

not to make light of the lockout, but at least we can see the dawn of KD's lockout beard..

KDTrey5 Kevin Durant
Same here! RT @Dash5Harris: RT @JHarden13: I've came to the conclusion that I'm not going to shave for the next 4months!!! #BeardSwag #

Great video. I like when Russ did the double spin move on Denver

@ okc baby
i agree. its all apart of his growing as a better NBA star. Honestly with some of the leaps and bumps he took last year im surprised he DIDNT get hurt lol.

Russell can be best PG of all time. But he needs to develop better passing, handle, control, vision and smarter. If he continues he ll be Iverson injury prone

@ Chris
yeah i know. i knew it was coming but DAMMIT, i wanted some basketball :P. I look forward to seeing perk healthy, durant getting better, russ's skills, hardens beard, ibaka setting a new record for blocked shots :), and hopefully some reggie action. i have a good feeling about our team this coming year.

@ dragonbug Yep. Hybrid is the key word. I can't wait to see what he is capable of. Harden, Ibaka, and Durant as well. Unfortunately this whole lockout deal has put a major damper on the situation!!!

@ Chris
i agree, russ will become a stellar PG/hybrid in a few years. Once he learns control and gets a good feel of the game hes going to be unstoppable. russ does have one thing on CP3.....hes healthier :P

@ dragonbug I can't believe it either.. It's crazy. He may not be as good as CP3 right now but in 2 to 4 years who will be better? My money is on Russ. Thanks for the compliment!

Chris :Wellll… not to change the subject but this lockout is making me sick to my stomach so here is a Russell “Honey Badger” Westbrook highlight video I made to help take my mind off of this. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq9CG00DjAM

@ Chris
freaking awesome man. i still love his spin move he did on kobe and dunking. Still cant believe people think we should trade a 22 year old all star :P .

Wellll... not to change the subject but this lockout is making me sick to my stomach so here is a Russell "Honey Badger" Westbrook highlight video I made to help take my mind off of this. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq9CG00DjAM

I saw in Darnell's twitter thread that season ticket holders can either get their money back for each game lost or "credit to future tickets." Yeah, that's just what I want to do, let you hang onto my cash to finance your operation and make it even less likely the strike gets resolved sooner rather than later. No, I'll be taking my cash please.

Not to mention job security is close to nothing unless your superstar status and not injury prone.

once the players paychecks stop coming in the unity will fracture between role players and the high earners.

I dont think they are thinking outside the box enough or making smaller changes that they can agree on to narrow the distance between the sides.

right now they are 700 million apart, if they could get that down to 500 million the rest of the compromise would be easier.

Sounds like we have a real reliable union representative...lol...

The fans talk back on that KD article is sickening. They dont understand. These guys go out and do something we could never do * well most of us lol* and they deserve to get paid for their services. They make million dollar contracts but they get signed for years and have to Be able to perform their job. Plus most Nba teams contribute to their town, state, ect...so its not like all of them are just rolling around in giant scrooge mcduck money pits :P

Well at least KD got to see it once before the 2012 calendar year.
