View from the enemy: The Two Man Game

25-6. Just keep repeating those numbers. That’s the Thunder’s record in bounce back games this season, including the playoffs. In fact, any game the Thunder have lost in the postseason, they followed with a win. It’s been 47 days since Oklahoma City has dropped back-to-back games.

Now, those numbers don’t really mean anything other than the Thunder do well at coming back from a loss. But winning tonight in Dallas isn’t going to come just because some numbers say so. It’s going to come because the Thunder play better, on both ends.

What every Thunder fan has been saying the past two days is, “Dirk can’t score 48 with just three missed shots again, can he? Right? RIGHT!?!” I think there’s some refuge to take in that, but while he might not set NBA records and break efficiency marks, Dirk is entirely capable of once again dominating.

What was lost in that Game 1 is that Dallas revealed it had no plan for Kevin Durant. Depending on perspective, it just appeared that the Mavericks may have caught a break in that Russell Westbrook couldn’t finish anything at the rim. Westbrook went just 3-15, but had he shot a normal percentage, the Thunder may have come out the victors and Durant the hero. Funny how it works like that.

One thing to watch is how the game is officiated. Here’s a funny thing: Two of the officials in Game 1 (Joey Crawford and Zach Zarba) reffed the Thunder’s Game 1 against the Grizzlies in which they lost. In that game, OKC was whistled at most any moment it tried to get physical with Zach Randolph. Things changed as that series went on and the play got a lot rougher. Will that happen again? If it does, that plays into the Thunder’s favor since OKC’s defense is largely built around its physicality. More physical play favors the Thunder.

Dirk drew 16 fouls on seven different Thunder defenders in Game 1. That’s got to be fixed and it might simply come down to how the officials see things.

But more than just the refs and Dirk, don’t overlook the Mavs bench, specifically J.J. Barea. He torched the Thunder in Game 1 in the pick-and-roll. One reason for it was that OKC’s best shotblocker, Serge Ibaka, was pulled out from the basket because he had to guard Dirk. One adjustment the Thunder could make would be to either A) go small with Ibaka at center and Durant at power forward or B) play Nick Collison and Ibaka together and sit Kendrick Perkins.

Perkins isn’t a shotblocker and doesn’t really rotate well to stop someone at the rim. But if Collison were on Dirk (and Collison is one of the league’s best pick-and-roll defenders), Ibaka could hang back and be there to protect the rim. Ibaka is averaging almost five blocks a game in the playoffs and didn’t have any in Game 1.

The Mavs have won seven straight in the playoffs and are playing as well as they can possibly play. Overcoming a hot team is a challenge, but all it takes is a solid 48 minutes of basketball. The Thunder really played the Mavs toe to toe in Game 1, except for the second quarter. Put it all together and hope maybe the Mavs miss a shot or two, and the Thunder can steal a win here.

Some are saying it’s must-win, but I don’t see it that way. A loss means the Thunder are in a very awkward position for Game 3, but it’s not over. A win though means they’ve set themselves up to actually take this series. So a lot is on the line tonight.

But remember, 25-6.

Tip at 8:00 CT. Go Bounce Back Thunder.

Floppy Punch! :
Magic Johnson: “Wussell Wessbook”

HAHAHA

Floppy Punch! :

jzwink :I fully expect Royce to post it with the article on the game, but can someone point me to a pic of Harden and his roar/tongue out?

You can see it here:http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/

Specifically, here:

KD had his hand up before Russ three went down

Magic Johnson: "Wussell Wessbook"

Here comes Wilbon, to muck it up again

great game, lets win these next two. love you, Thunder!! Keep rolling!!

Haha, Terry, you stooge!

jzwink :I fully expect Royce to post it with the article on the game, but can someone point me to a pic of Harden and his roar/tongue out?

bravo, Westy, smiling, calling out those leaches, "I know you all want to ask teh same question, Ill give you all teh same answer." Nice

@clarkem

Yeah Perkins and Ibaka are bad offensively, but the way the game was (Thunder in the lead), you would think that they would have wanted to preserve the lead, and keeping players like Cook in the game doesn't necessarily help with that on the defensive end. It's pretty clear to me that Brooks thought the bench did well enough to close it out, although I thought that was a risky decision.

Neat tidbit....check James' twitter. I predicted his 23 points yesterday in a tweet to him. Handle is "purplelvstuff". I need to be a carnie.

Great. They've got some brainless bimbo covering "social media" on NBAtv and she shows some random tweet from a Westbrook hater as an example of what people "out there" are saying.

Hey...how huge was Harden's inbound pass to Nick in the Fourth!

Anyone watching the live post-game press conference? Dean Blevins just asked a dumb question of Dirk. "Now that you've lost home court advantage, talk a little bit about what changed."

@shiki
Exactly, but you have to forget little facts like that when it doesn't fit neatly into your OKC sucks theory

I fully expect Royce to post it with the article on the game, but can someone point me to a pic of Harden and his roar/tongue out?

Westbrook about to speak, ESPN Scott somebody jus said, "Yould expect him to be bummed out." Apparently he isnt

Westbrook up next in press conference on espn.

@ChuckPete
And Denver have the best record at home,we won 1 at their home.ESPN forget it.

I have to say that KD dunk was top 5 playoff dunk

Great game... :)
Can't believe the small ball can actually work that well... I sweat nervously the whole 4th quarter but it actually worked... :)
Nick was great, Harden was insanely great, actually Maynor was great in most of the game too (the rest was just mostly good.. :P )
RW was also better most of the game even though he did tail off from the 3rd, but he saved KD's house from the bet... Such a good teammate... Lol...
Well, KD was just KD but this got to be the best in the playoff...

KD should get wider straps for his packpack--make it a full vest look. Maybe turn the top latch into a bow tie.

ChuckPete :
Chicago has Three road wins in the playoffs thus far, Miami has three, Dallas has three, and OKC has three, how does that make us a bad road team?

Excellent points

andrew :
I really like Gottlieb as an analyst. He just gets overextended by ESPN because he doesn’t watch enough NBA. His specialty is College bball. Hence the dumb statements.

Totally agree. Comparing Brooks and Capel is silly. The role of a coach in college ball is very different from the role of an NBA coach.

Chicago has Three road wins in the playoffs thus far, Miami has three, Dallas has three, and OKC has three, how does that make us a bad road team?

If we don't lose any of our home games we move on.

Kd talked about russell being a perfect teammate while ESPN showed russell yelling on the bench when he went out

and of course the national media is bad with this but believe it or not the people I sit by at the games are even worse

justin :

clarkem :
ESPN said we were a bad road team in the playoffs because we were 2-4. I wonder what they say now.

.500 on the road and you’re in good shape.

yes, especillay now that we dont have home court advantage

Skeletor :
Gottlieb on the Animal. Missed the first part. What did he say?

Basically praising Books for sitting Westbrook. Said this was exactly what Capel didn't do at OU.

Skeletor :Gottlieb on the Animal. Missed the first part. What did he say?

Probably something ignorant. As part of the ESPN machine, he just repeats what he hears other analysts say. I heard him a couple days ago with saying that the Perk trade was a bust for OKC because we missed Green's scoring, etc.

okc baby :
We did better then the Lakers. I take satisfaction in that

Agreed...wha???? with OKC Baby??? GO THUNDER!!! Woo Hoo!!!

justin :@error72

He was benched against NOH during the regular season and got 19/7/11 in the next game against Portland.

I hope you're right, but this is a far different situation. After Denver Game 4, Westbrook really had the media microscope bear down on him, and his next game was very poor. I expect the same pressure from this situation as well, has he learned to shut it out enough to play a good game? I honestly seriously doubt it.

And really, I love Westbrook. I'm really really glad he's our All-star point guard, and I really hope I'm wrong.

Gottlieb on the Animal. Missed the first part. What did he say?

clarkem :

.500 on the road and you're in good shape.

I ahve to be at work at 7, but I don't think I'll sleep until the recap is up.

clarkem :
Thank you Kevin. In reference to asking if Russ needs help because he is struggling so much: “I don’t think he’s struggling at all. He played well tonight”

andrew :
KD has gotten really good at handling the press. I like.

Yes, Thrice!!

ESPN said we were a bad road team in the playoffs because we were 2-4. I wonder what they say now.

We did better then the Lakers. I take satisfaction in that

bravo, KD!! they asked KD how can they get Russle from not struggling, he said in all earnest, staring at the dude like afool, "I dont think Russel struggled at all."

KD has gotten really good at handling the press. I like.

Thank you Kevin. In reference to asking if Russ needs help because he is struggling so much: "I don't think he's struggling at all. He played well tonight"

We have now won a road playoff game every round this year, gotta feel good about that.

Bravo, staff, on the adjustments

andrew :I don’t think people get that Russell Westbrook is a good guy. It’s so frustrating.

Agreed. That's what I hate most about all this bad press he's been getting.

Hearing Berry Tramel on national tv makes my ears bleed.

Thomas :

justin :P
Wilbon is so annoying.
</blockquo
+1

@ChuckPete
He's adjusted two games in a row. One time it lost it for us, the next time he almost gave it away because of stubborness

I don't think people get that Russell Westbrook is a good guy. It's so frustrating.
