The Thunder bench does it as OKC evens things, 106-100

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images

The Thunder pulled out an incredibly gutsy, hard-fought Game 2 to even the series 1-1 with a 106-100 win. But more than likely, there’s going to be more talk about how the Thunder won the game than actually that they won the game.

Scott Brooks is the main reason the word “gutsy” is in that lede. Brooks made what I’m sure was an extremely difficult decision to go with his bench the entire fourth quarter. Russell Westbrook — who was very good the first three quarters — didn’t play a second. It was Eric Maynor’s team to run. In fact, only one starter played the bulk of the fourth and it was Kevin Durant. (Thabo and Serge Ibaka played the closing minutes.)

I’ve already heard people saying Westbrook was pouting, furious or a lot of other negative things about his “benching.” I’ve heard people speculating that Brooks wanted to teach him a lesson. But that’s not at all what this was about. This was about the five players on the floor and how well they were playing. This was about going with what was going to win you a game. Russell Westbrook isn’t stupid. The Thunder won the game and that’s what matters. He understands that. I’m sure he’s going to be a little upset. I’m sure he’s offended he didn’t come in. But the win is what matters and he gets that.

There is going to be a story made about this situation, which is a total shame. I can already hear all the talk radio shows and picture all the columns being written about how the Thunder need a so-called “pure” point guard on the floor. This feeds every narrative we’ve heard about over the past few weeks. I get that. I’m not dumb. But there’s a big distance between being upset and being disappointed.

And you know what? If Westbrook actually is so offended that this becomes an issue, then I don’t think he fits the culture of this organization. This franchise is entirely about team, together and trusting in the next guy. I can’t think that Westbrook isn’t a part of that. If he isn’t, then he should absolutely move on.

The Thunder won this game without Westbrook on the floor in the biggest moments. Easy to see that. Westbrook didn’t turn the ball over, didn’t miss a shot, didn’t make a bad decision in the final 12 minutes. That’s true. But to think this is some kind of change the Thunder need to pursue full time or more often is borderline crazy. This team didn’t win 55 games and get to the Western Conference Finals with Russell Westbrook sitting on the bench. Brooks played the hot hand. He went with what was working. And besides, it’s not like Westbrook had nothing to do with this win or something.

Honestly, the bigger story SHOULD be about Brooks making that call — which had to be incredibly hard — and sticking with it. Brooks knows it’s going to be a big story. He knows that there’s going to be damage control. He summed it up simply.

“I didn’t want to mess with the rhythm,” he said. “It had nothing to do with Russell. Eric was playing good basketball for us.” That tells the story, but that’s not the story people want to hear. It’s not the good story. It’s not what’s most interesting.

Again, the real story is how well the Thunder bench performed. James Harden was completely lights out (23 points on 6-9 shooting, seven rebounds, four assists). Eric Maynor, terrific (13 points, zero turnovers). Nick Collison was downright heroic on Dirk. Daequan Cook hit a couple massive 3s. Look at the Thunder bench: +5, +10, +18, +11, +14. The bench went 9-11 in the fourth quarter for 23 of the Thunder’s 29 points. In the second quarter, the bench scored on 10 consecutive possessions. They scored a total 50 points. Now that’s a story.

This game turned immediately after KD threw down one of the most ridiculous dunks this season over Brendan Haywood. It was so nasty, KD was given a technical foul for it. (Not really, but he did get a tech for I guess staring at Haywood.) Durant was dominant despite just scoring 24 points (he had 16 in the first half). Westbrook, for all the talk there will be about him, re-discovered his game, scoring 18 points in the first three quarters. He dropped jumpers, created points for others and defended well.

You can’t understate what a win this is for the Thunder. Coming back with a split is worth gold. This is the first time the Mavs have lost at home all postseason and the only two games they’ve allowed 100 points are in these two to the Thunder.

There’s going to be a bunch of chatter after this one and that’s the trade Scott Brooks made with his decision to stick with his bench. But it paid off and that’s what matters. He may have to do a bit of grief counseling tomorrow, but the same starting five will be out there for Game 3. Russell Westbrook will get his time. This was about going with the hot hand and your gut. And in this case, it completely worked. You can’t second guess that.

NOTES:

  • You know what I’m reminded of? Remember the Nuggets game in Denver the Thunder won during the regular season? Eric Maynor really sparked the team big time and Brooks hung with him for a long time (Russ re-entered with two minutes left). It was the right call then and there weren’t any lingering issues after that.
  • KD on Westbrook: “I don’t think he struggled tonight. We went with a different lineup in the fourth. But he didn’t struggle. When he was on the floor he played pretty well I think.” More: “Russell understands that. He’s a perfect teammate. He was over there cheering everybody on. As a leader, that’s what you want to see over there on the bench.”
  • That’s what’s already blowing me away — people are already drawing conclusions that there’s some sort of major rift. Stuart Scott said Westbrook was “furious” about being benched while doing highlights. That speculation is nuts. But prepare to endure it for a couple days.
  • Magic Johnson said Durant’s dunk is one of his top five ever in the postseason. Pretty bold, but I’m not disagreeing. I can’t think of five better.
  • What won this game for the Thunder was the bench in the second quarter. Just huge play from them. Dallas won the first, OKC took the second. A reversal of Game 1.
  • The Thunder made an adjustment on Dirk and to me, there was some light doubling, but it was more about pushing him away from spots and making him drive. Dirk finished with 29 on 10-17 shooting, but was just 9-10 from the line. Collison’s work was terrific, but even Ibaka played solid minutes on him.
  • Dirk gives me nightmares, but man, J.J. Barea is terrifying.
  • Love this tweet from Shoals: “Westbrook is smart enough to know that Harden or Maynor getting heavy minutes is hardly an insult.”
  • A lot of people drew a conclusion on Westbrook because he was upset when he was taken out at the end of the third. Yes, he was demonstrative there. But Russ is emotional. He has outbursts all the time. He never pouted or sat with his arms crossed on the bench. He was up and cheering the entire fourth. The people that want to feed the narrative aren’t going to mention that, but it’s the truth.
  • Mark Jackson said he thought the Kendrick Perkins trade was bad for both teams because “Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic added something…” Yeah, that’s not true. Then he said, “Jeff Green’s ability to guard guys like Dirk Nowitzki.” I have no words, or comment.
  • You know who wasn’t great in this game? Kendrick Perkins. He just has a lot of trouble with the more athletic Tyson Chandler. Can’t run the floor with him, can’t jump with him on oop attempts. But we did get another look at Perk’s beautiful mid-range game again. When that went, I felt pretty good.
  • Here’s the thing: The Thunder shot 55.7 percent from the field. A lot of the reason OKC won was because the Thunder hit some really tough shots. A couple of Harden’s were downright incredible. Just like Thunder fans convinced themselves Dirk wouldn’t shoot 12-15 again, Mavs fans are likely saying OKC’s not going to drop that many tough shots again.
  • My power went out right after Peja missed that 3 with 10 seconds left. No joke. That was agonizing.
  • People saw it as complaining from me on Twitter, but I didn’t mean it that way, but how is it that Dirk isn’t allowed to be touched? Like every time Collison laid hands on him, it was a whistle. Even the other four Mavericks didn’t get that treatment. A few times Maynor or Thabo grabbed and held Jason Terry or Barea like crazy, but no call. I find this odd.
  • On that note, only three free throw attempts for KD.
  • How about Scott Brooks halftime speech? Have you seen that much fire from him like, ever?
  • A second straight game Serge didn’t have a block. That’s rare.

Make it 27-5 in bounce back games. OKC took care of business in Dallas and got the split. A shame there’s going to be so much talk about what happened in this game, but the biggest news is that the Thunder took a big time road game.

This series feels like it’s going to be a complete battle of who makes more shots in big moments and tonight, it was the Thunder. I really have no idea what to expect in Game 3.

Next up: Game 3 in OKC Saturday.

@GlennPThunderUp
Yeah there is, because Durant is on a higher level than either Rose or Westbrook.

I still like Nick Collison's name for him, Jimbo Slice... hence my screenname..

But really I can't say enough about how pleasantly surprised I was with Brooks. Yes, the whole bench in the fourth quarter thing was nice, but it wasn't just that. I liked his use of Thabo, rotating him better when Terry was on the floor instead of wasting his minutes on Stevenson. But can we say enough about Durant? I mean, everybody's been lusting over Dirk's fadeaway jumper, which is deadly no doubt, but nothing beats Durant's ultra nasty step back jumpers off the dribble.

We could call Harden "Katie Holmes." Get it? The Beard? Heh. I kill me.

justin :
Very impressive win. James Harden is basketball He-Man. I wasn’t a huge fan of keeping Westbrook out of the game but I like that Brooks shortened his rotation a little bit, the general idea is a good one.

Good! me too. Glad we still agree on most things.

This. Is. Awesome. Made even better with the storms.

Pause the Durant dunk video at :53 and enjoy a gander at the stunned Mavs fans

Watching the replay on ESPN3. Not as nervous this time. Weird.

GREAT WIN!!! So pumped the Thunder got this game in Dallas. If they can win there they can win ANYWHERE! Love these two stats from Royce: First Playoff Home Loss for Dallas and only 2 Playoff Games they've let up 100 points! These are very promising signs!

I agree with some previous posters though, it does feel like the national sports media isn't ready to accept the Rise of the Thunder just yet. The old vetern story line and Miami-Dallas rematch is much more compelling. However, the NBA hasn't seen a team this young perform this well this early. I think the media will come around to the story lines that OKC has after a couple more wins. Anyone that hasn't recognized Durant as a true Super Star in this league is just a hater.

THUNDER UP!!!!!!!!

Thomas :I swear there was a muted response from the commentators last night as it became clear that OKC would win. Not that they are rooting for Dallas but they had spent the last two days setting up the story that this was Dirk’s year and that he was just going to steamroll the Thunder. It seemed like they were a bit disappointed when it turned out that the Thunder weren’t going to just roll over and die.

True! I was watching ESPN a little while ago and someone said, "The Mavs are 7 games away from an NBA title." So what? EVERY team still playing is 7 games away from a title! Why pimp the Mavs? I think Brooks did the right thing last night in sticking with the 2nd team. If these commentators had been watching the Thunder play this year, they'd know that there have been many times when our bench made the difference in a game. They'd also know that Brooks has stuck with our bench before when they're playing well. This is not new. Last night, it looked to me like Russ was mad at #1) Getting stripped of the ball...#2) Being called for a foul when he tried to take the ball back because he felt he'd been fouled on the initial strip...#3) Coach Brooks taking him out of the game because he'd seen that look in Russ' eyes before and he knew Russ' head wasn't in the right place. Something that often gets lost in all this analysis of the games is that the players on this Thunder team were selected in large part because of their willingness to place the team above individual stats. That's why Russ isn't going to stay mad about not playing in the 4th quarter. He just wants to win. It's also why Harden isn't going to sulk if Thabo continues to start for the time being. They're all focused on "we", not "me". I've said it before...I'll say it again...when the Thunder are clicking, there's no team in the NBA that can hang with them. Last night they showed that, when everything's working, no team in the NBA can even hang with our SECOND team. Now the series comes back to OUR house. Let's send the Mavs back to Dallas trailing 3-1 in this series!

They don't know what their talking about. How is a reigning two time scoring champ, the youngest to ever do so, not a superstar? Who led the US to the FIBA championship? That's right, Durant and Westbrook. Rose is the MVP, and rightfully so, but there's no way these three guys aren't on the same level.

on the radio show with jalen rose, they said that durant, westbrook aren't superstars because their wives aren't excited to watch them. That's the definition.

I say FK all them commentators.

@anonymous
We won Nuggets and Grizzlies by KD's performance.Everyone knows they are much better than Hawks and Pacers.Rose' victory is too cheap.

thelaughingman :What’s a cool nickname for Harden? The Beard is uninspired and should be left to the original holders (i.e. Baron Davis). I want to call him something that’s home grown ya’ know?

Lucky Harden is his old nickname. I think we should still be using it.

Stephan A Smith tweeted: "Outcome doesn't change the point that Westbrook has to be in the game for those late, late moments"

Sorry Stephen, the outcome DOES change the point. Yeah we probably still would have won with Westbrook playing, but the coach made the call and it worked. It was a ballsy move, but it worked. I think Russ was a little ticked about it, but not to the extent that the media is playing it as.

Jalen rose just said durant was not yet a super star but guess who was? Derrick rose. His reasoning had something to do with oprah, I didn't quite understand it.

seriously, the comment about the trade being bad for the Thunder set me off, and then about having jeff green to have dirk was absolutely ignorant.

Just finished watching the game. OHHHH YEAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! I just woke up every Hawaiian in a 1-mile radius!

As bad as Scott Brooks was in Game 1, he was tremendous in Game 2. LOTS of Nick after he played less than 20 minutes in Game 1. And as usual, Nick was absolutely huge.

James is growing up behind our very eyes. I just felt like every shot he put up was going in.

And Brooks playing Eric Maynor the entire 4th quarter? I was thinking the whole time, OMG, okcBaby is losing his mind right now! Maynor was huge. Not a single turnover and some big shots when we needed them. I love that Scott Brooks stayed with him.

And believe it or not, I actually thought THABO played well in this game too.

We are 1-1 going home! That's all we needed was a split. We got it! Now let's get 2 at home. THUNDER UP!!!!!!

this is sickening. mike and mike going on and on about westbrook pouting on the bench during the fourth quarter. did they watch they game?

wow, learned a couple of things from jalen rose this morning:

this is russell westbrook's first season playing point guard.
and the fourth quarter benching was a precursor to okc eventually cutting westbrook loose in a couple of years.

can't espn do better?

Russ's demeanor at the airport was fine. He was smiling high five'n fans. I think he'll be okay. Love the honey badger.!

@thelaughingman

Lucky Number 13? lol

SICK SICK SICK, ILL SICK. I love this team. Aww man, can't wait to see what happens in the future. The future seems cloudy! With a huge chance of THUNDUH!!!!

@The Honey Badger
THAT video right there is the reason im proud to be a thunder fan. I live so far from okc but i would of loved to been there. Our guys are so awesome! .

What's a cool nickname for Harden? The Beard is uninspired and should be left to the original holders (i.e. Baron Davis). I want to call him something that's home grown ya' know?

Royce, DID YOU SEE THE TWO TIMES DIRK PRACTICALLY SHOVED COLLISON WITH NO CALL?

There was the one when Nick snagged a board and Nowitzki bumped him not once but twice from behind, almost knocking him down - no call.

Then the pretty obvious elbow pushoff in the fourth after which Nick just kinda sat there like, "Wow."

Just saying, we can't touch him and yet he can bang on our guys! BOGUS.

how good is this team?

and their four best players are 22, 22, 21, 21...

I know it's talked about a lot, but it's just crazy. they're set for ten years with those guys. hopefully they can afford them.

Props to you guys that made it out there in the weather. Wish I could have been back home to do the same. We definitely have the best fans in the league, hands down.

I am in love with this team.

Maybe he did make it to part of the fence, just not down to where I was. I lost my good spot when I wimped out and went to the car while a storm cell moved by.

Russ was one of the best-dressed, and looked like he had on some really nice shoes. He got close enough to see the large amount of standing water, waved and headed for dry ground.

Just kidding... lol I must have just missed him.

@CenOK

Actually didn't see Westbrook.. A lot of the players came over, but I don't think Russ did. If he did, he only came half way and I might have just missed him.. But he wasn't the only player to not come to the fence.

@CenOK

Westbrook's demeanor seemed fine to me. He went down the fence like most of the other players and greeted fans. He was wearing a nice suit and shoes and didn't make it all the way down to where I was (I don't blame him, it was muddy) but he gave a wave down to the people at the end.

Just out of curiosity, what was Westbrooks demeanor like for the fans who made it out to the airport? I have no doubt that RW is strong-willed enough and enough of a team player to deal with it, although I definitely would have preferred to avoid all this ridiculous controversy.

@sorr

I made it out just in time to see the plane pulling up as I was driving in. I didn't get the best spot along the fence but most the players still came over to where I was despite the puddles and mud. Awesome group! My favorite part was Nate bringing Scott Brooks over to wave at the crowd after everyone was chanting "We want Scotty!"... Oh and the KD high five through the fence.

Awesome group out at the Airport!!! SO glad I made it just in time. They say we are the best fans in the league, but they are the best team in the league.

That video was amazing. Can we please keep Nate with this team.

Thunder13 :
I really think a one thing that played into our hands this game that hasn’t been mentioned was jason terry starting the third, or coming in a lot earlier. It actually gave us someone to have Thabo guard and I thought he did an awesome job. Harden’s d struggled in the first half and he really picked it up in the second half, great job by both those guys.

I thought Thabo did a wonderful job tonight 2

lol.. awesome video.. Nate is the spark to our flame, love seeing all the players coming over to the fence, even more priceless with all the thunder and lightning in the background.. it almost looked staged, lol.. love it, every ounce of it

yup, looked like a lot by the looks of nates video. good going thunder fans! proud to be associated with yall!

apparently a ton of people showed up, wasn't expecting that

If anyone gets that Scott Brooks halftime speech video, hit me up with a link please.

@ThunderHorn
You must not have been paying attention to what the media has been saying the past few days, it's been a Dirk love-fest on evrything.

Great win. Incredibly tough call by Brooks but it worked and when it works you're a genius. If it didn't work he'd be getting killed by every fan, blogger, and analyst out there.

Mark Jackson is out of his mind. First of all without the trade getting past Denver would have been tough and the Grizzlies probably destroy the Thunder. I shudder to think what Randolph/Gasol would have done to a Green/Krstic starting front court the way they were playing this post-season, specifically Randolph.

Harden was incredible tonight. Big time performance and thats what he was drafted for. Maynor bounced back big as well. Must have taken Barea abusing him and the rest of the D personally b/c he more or less dominated that matchup.

Collison was Collison. Came up with 2 huge defensive plays down the stretch, stripping Dirk, then recovering after a scramble to block Dirk. Also, drew a big foul and knocked down 2 FTs(after missing 2 just moments before) to push the lead back up to 6 I believe.

Dirk has to be the most underappreciated player in the history of the NBA. This guy throws down a pretty great game tonight and people are talking about him like he underperformed. The difference between this game and last game was the Thunder didn't foul him every other possession, they mixed up their looks, stayed down for the most part on pump fakes, and didn't grab and pull him or reach as much.

Perkins was awful and his knee is being exposed. What Mark Jackson doesn't seem to understand is that the trade was made with the Lakers in mind not Dallas. Nobody other than Barkley expected Dallas to be here. Before the injury he wasn't all that quick but he's less than a year away from his ACL injury. Nobody fully recovers from that in a year. He probably won't be back to where he was last year(or as close as he'll ever get to that) until 2013 season. Usually takes about 2 years for guys to be fully back.

Durant was fantastic tonight. He didn't score a ton, thought he settled for shots a few times, but his play(and the bench) kept this team around in the 1st half. That dunk was NASTY and that really seemed to fire everyone up. I thought he made some very nice passes tonight but guys couldn't finish. The cross court laser he threw to Harden though was great. He's improved tremendously as a passer as the season has gone on.

Westbrook, Westbrook, Westbrook....that always seems to be the story with the Thunder. The criticism for him is reaching insane levels. He played well tonight. Normally Brooks brings the bench guys in with a couple of minutes to spare in the 3rd but Westbrook was playing well, then he had a bad 1-2 minute stretch and was pulled for Maynor. The Thunder bench + KD played great, pushing a 1 point lead to 10 with 3 minutes remaining. Brooks made a decision and the results speak for themselves.
