Monday Bolts – 5.30.11

Happy Memorial Day everyone. A special thanks to all our servicemen and women for everything. And specifically, thanks to my best friend Andy who is serving in Afghanistan. Also, a note: I’m en route to Miami today to cover the NBA Finals for CBSSports.com so I’ll be out of touch for a bit. I’m sure life will go on without me for a bit though.

Berry Tramel grades the season: “Russell Westbrook: A. OK, so he shoots too much and commits too many turnovers. Yes, more Thunder possessions end with Westbrook (shooting or turnovers) than with Durant. Agreed, his decision-making needs work. You know what all those deficiencies mean? The rest of the league is scared to death. A guy who in four years has gone from UCLA backup to second-team all-NBA with Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki can still get not only better, but a lot better? By the way, Westbrook this season shot two percentage points worse than Durant from the field and from 3-point range. Not 10. Two.”

It’s kind of nice for someone else to have to worry about Dirk now.

Perk wants to shut up the critics.

Two outstanding quotes from Sam Presti’s exit interview: 1) “Our improvement is not a matter of time. It is experiences over time.” And 2) “We don’t have a calendar or a stopwatch. We’ve just done the work.”

The good ladies of The Score’s “Broadly Speaking” had me on to recap the Thunder’s postseason.

Solid note from J.A. Sherman of Welcome to Loud City on Perk: “Kendrick Perkins did not have a great post-season due to conditioning and bad match-ups, but to anyone who thinks that OKC regrets the trade even for a moment clearly did not spend any time watching the team before the trade went down. If you did, you would have seen how the Thunder were playing – there was something broken in their make-up, and that something did not get fixed until Perkins suited up.”

Danny Chau of HP on John Malkovich and the Mavs: “It’s a dark tunnel to the championship. It’s scary, and probably squishy. For Dallas, entering the mind of Malkovich means knowing what it means to be a champion. Nowitzki, his aging brethren, and the rest of the Mavericks are surely hoping that redemption can be achieved in the time it takes to be sucked in and spit out.”

Did you know the Thunder have the 24th overall pick in the draft? Easy to forget about. Right now, Draft Express has OKC taking Kyle Singler. Meh.

TrueHoop TV picks the playoff MVP to this point.

KD says he wants to bulk up for next year. Which of course is the same thing he always says. Kurt Helin of PBT on it: “A quick look at Durant tells you this is a good idea, but it’s just a start. Durant showed in the playoffs that he needs to be more consistent at working hard off the ball to get open. How he came off screens, the energy used off the ball all needs to improve. He was too easily taken out of the game — it was not all Russell Westbrook, it was a combination. Durant is improving, as are the Thunder. Far too early to sell them short about where they will be in a year or two — particularly because of how hard Durant and the team work in the offseason.”

That's a really good video.

Hey guys. I made a Westbrook video and was wondering if it was something other Thunder fans liked. Tried to tell some story instead of just highlights and made it as HD as I could. Check it out and post any feedback.

I think lat williams is equivalent to thr 66's franchise player ...i guessq

@TaoMaas

Aldrich and Mullens are under contract with OKC, Williams isn't. And if Williams was signed during the season I think OKC would have lost their rights to calling him up from Tulsa. I think he gets a fair shake at it in camp next season.

Joel :
What about Vaden? They brought him up… for what reason?

I really think they didn't sign Williams because they lose the exclusive rights to call him up if they did.

What about Vaden? They brought him up... for what reason?

justin : He played better than either Aldrich or Mullens, IMO.

And yet, there's Aldrich and/or Mullens at the end of the bench in suits almost every game. Justin, why do you think Williams isn't being given the same sort of token acceptance? (serious question, btw)

Lat Williams was one of the most productive players in the D-League last season. It's the D-League, but still. There's potential there. He played better than either Aldrich or Mullens, IMO.

I think there's just about the same value at #24 in this draft as there is at #14. Unless Sam Presti absolutely falls in love with someone I wouldn't move up. Certainly not be trading away future 1st round picks.

@Bryson
The NBA has rules to try to preserve the college basketball scene. Latavious Willians went straight to the D-league from high school (I think he had academic problems that cost him a scholarship to Memphis). Since he is such a project his agent couldn't drum up any interest in Europe.
The NBA requires all nondrafted d-leaguers to enter the draft after being in the D-league for a year. Latavious is still very young, he could develop into a quality role player over time.

@Needabetternamethan The Durantula

Whats the point of doing that...?

I think Presti drafted him specifically so he could remain with the 66ers.

I think this board ought to schedule a road trip to go scout the 66'ers during the season.

Latavious Williams is a great rebounder and an above average defender but he is not an elite athlete and he doesn't have a great feel for the game. Most would still peg him as a project. We have enough project big men I think. I think Presti drafted him specifically so he could remain with the 66ers.

@Needabetternamethan The Durantula
I totally agree. If we can move up for cheap that is totally fine.

I know the immediate reaction to this season is to say "we're so close, we just need a little offensive punch off the bench after Harden moves to the starting unit." I really think that hemorrhaging our future to move up in a weak draft is not the way to go. No, I don't anticipate having a lottery pick for a long time but you have to anticipate a revolving need for role players. If we can move up by packaging NateRob with our current pick, we definitely should, but we need to leave those future picks alone unless something really worthwhile comes along. Remember people felt that we were giving Chicago a garbage pick for Thabo, that garbage pick was Taj Gibson...a pivotal player for their success this year.

Are we ever going to give Latavious Williams a look with the Thunder? Or have we already done it and I missed it?

haha knowing presti he could dump Bryon on someone too lol

@Bryson
Me too. I wonder what a deal of our 1st, thabo, nate's expiring and a future would give us.

I would have absolutely no problem with trading our next couple 1st rounders for a higher pick this year.

I think Presti will make some kind of trade to move up. I've said it before but I think Jordan Hamilton is a perfect Thunder player. Obviously he more than likely wouldn't be around at 24. Mock draft websites are definitely skewed a little. Ive seen him as high as a lottery and as low as mid early 20's. I think a guy like him can be interchangeable to backup KD and Harden. Harden obviously needs to start but we do need a guy that can provide a start off the bench.

kreese29 : If we draft a pg does that mean they plane on trading Eric maynor

I hope they're not planning on trading Maynor but you never know. It almost looks like the Thunder are looking at "best player available". Goudelock seems to be getting the most looks from NBA teams. If everyone is interested, that ought to say something.

If they take a point guard I think they should get Nolan smith, of Honeycutt if hes around when we pick. If we draft a pg does that mean they plane on trading Eric maynor

Singler seems too much of a tweener. Doesn't have the explosiveness to defend quick SF's and lacks the size to defend bigger PF's. He's a role player so it might not matter but at that pick I'd like someone you can project into a solid role. I'm not sure what Singler does for us.

Checking in. DT is my Thunder off-season therapy group. *sigh*

Already missing watching the Thunder play. Going to the lake and drinking beer just not the same. : (

We need to take Tyler Honeycutt...He is predicted to go to us, and he fits well with us. He's a 2/3 combo and is a perfect backup for KD.

Kyle Singler is from my hometown here; I work with his uncle. He will never be a star in the NBA, but he fits the mold of Thunder players being a solid citizen and hard worker. He won't mess up the chemistry.

Friday was a busy today. The Oklahoma City Thunder hosted Andrew Goudelock, Lavoy Allen, Nolan Smith, Josh Selby, Cory Joseph and Matt Howard. A source at the workout said that Selby "was the best guard out there" and Goudelock "shot the hell out of the ball.
http://www.thehoopsreport.com/article.aspx?id=733

Is Selby a good choice for us?

I'm just here for roll call.
