Tuesday Bolts – 4.12.11

Zach Lowe of SI on OKC post-Perk-trade: “Again: This could be more the result of an easy-ish schedule than anything else. But the Thunder undoubtedly look better. Harden’s play has been particularly encouraging, since the Thunder will be better off now that he can handle the lion’s share of minutes at the 2-guard — and take over ball-handling responsibilities now and then. And cutting out Jeff Green in favor of a bigger front line hasn’t hurt Oklahoma City’s perimeter shooting, since Harden is coming along there, too, and Scott Brooks appears comfortable using a three-guard bench combination of Harden, Eric Maynor and Daequan Cook to stretch the floor.”

The Nuggets say the Thunder talked a lot of trash: “Everybody (else) is pretty much whatever, whoever we’ll be ready to go, but I want them though,” Felton said. “They were doing a little bit of trash talking, so I want them.” … “There’s no question there’s a cockiness to Oklahoma City that we’re anxious to see if that’s what we’ve got to go through,” Karl said.”

Darnell Mayberry on the trash talking: “This is the point in the program where we say be careful what you wish for, big boy. The Thunder just smacked you at your place and thumped you back in Oklahoma City. Denver’s a good team. But the Nuggets aren’t good enough to start calling out opponents, and a backup point guard who hasn’t so much as won one playoff game should be the last one talking. But I digress. The real news in this story is that Felton claims the Thunder did some trash talking. That’s not something we’ve heard about this team. And it’s something the organization doesn’t want to be associated with as it attempts to grow a classy franchise.”

Kurt Helin of PBT on Perk’s screens: “Any offense the Thunder got from Perkins was considered a bonus. Perkins is not that dangerous on the roll part of the pick-and-roll, and that could be an issue down the line. Against a team like the Lakers it should allow Andrew Bynum to freelance more as a help defender. But if the pick itself creates enough space for Durant and Westbrook to do their thing, that may not matter. Either way, just don’t say Perkins doesn’t bring anything to the Thunder’s offense.”

Playoff shirt!

Andy Kamenetzky of ESPN.com on a potential Thunder-Lakers series: “Having said that, I’m not naive enough to deem the Thunder incapable of ending the Lakers‘ run. It could absolutely happen. If OKC isn’t the most dangerous foe, they’re certainly close. A title run also is difficult by definition and stands to offer thrills no matter who the Lakers face. If fans just as soon preferred what felt like the relatively easiest draw possible, even if it meant potentially missing out on the stuff of legend, I certainly wouldn’t blame them.”

Serge Ibaka could lead the league in blocks.

Mayberry’s notes: “Westbrook’s come-from-behind steal on Udrih with 4:39 left in the second was as good as it gets. Watching it unfold live, Westbrook looked like a video game character. You could see his determination to get the ball back by any means necessary. He busted his butt to catch up to the play, poked it away from Udrih and darted the other way for a nice layup. Very impressive hustle.”

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com absolutely crushed this column about Mark Cuban.

Ric Bucher of ESPN.com thinks OKC is set up for a long postseason run.

From Elias: Kevin Durant scored 32 points and Russell Westbrook had 30 in the Thunder’s 120-112 victory in Sacramento. It was the fifth time this season that Durant and Westbrook have each scored 30-or-more points. The only other NBA teammates this season to score 30-or-more points in the same game at least five times are LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who have done it seven times.

@Dust
Man I'd love a small, medium, or a large (preferably a medium). I'd be more than happy to pay for shipping.

And as stated above, even though I'm not as much of a fan of this year's playoff shirt, I really have enjoyed much of your work and look forward to more in the seasons to come.

@Dust
No problem! Hope it works out!

@blade_ Email me your specific address and I'll get you the cost straight from UPS. dusty@treeandleafclothing.com

I also noticed earlier in your comment about using Hector (Thunder caricature artist) for a shirt. I'll get with him and see if he's interested! Thanks for the excellent suggestion. @jzwink

@Dust: how much is the shipping to europe? I guess more than 9$?

@Dust
Although I was critical above, I also want to say thanks for doing what you're doing. Even though I haven't seen a shirt I'd plunk down that amount of cash for YET, I wouldn't ever want you to stop doing what you're doing as a great support for our team.

@JimboSlice I still have some select sizes of last years shirts here at the shop. I think we're going to put them on the $5 rack if you want one on the cheap!

I gotta say... I'm quite underwhelmed by the playoff shirt. Can we just get a reprint of the Why Not shirt instead?

@Grolgar
It would be really great if they were in the Plaza District! Love it down there.

MartzMimic :@JamesSmith

We get the meaning; it’s the poor execution that has people shaking their heads.
It’s like watching Jeff Green play power forward.

lol +1

@Dust

We appreciate what you are doing... it would be awesome if you guys could move south to one of the creative areas of OKC like Plaza, Paseo, or even Automobile Alley. Or maybe you guys set up somewhere near downtown on a gamenight and sell shirts... These areas might bring more exposure. Maybe not. Keep up the good work. I think everyone appreciates what you do.

@cdub00
Part of our thinking was to have a shirt that's not just limited a month of playoffs. So kind of like the Why Not? shirt, it's something that can be carried on a bit. On the back of it, it still has "Next Is Now" to kind of try and tie it all together a bit.

LOVE the OKC playoff tee. But not becuase it in any way pertains to the actual playoffs. That was the only part that I was miffed about. I get the OKC thing, but what separates that shirt from just a general OKC Thunder shirt?

I love it for the very reason that many don't like it...it's different and as a previous poster pointed out, if you like the plain Jane stuff, Academy or Wally World or whatever is the place to go.

Love the artistic creations Dust...KEEP IT UP!! :)

@Dust
I am not a fan of the playoff shirt, but I have liked and bought several shirts in the past (zombie sonics, air Congo, and why not). Keep up the good work! :)

I definitely appreciate critique in all my work at Tree&Leaf. We use the colors we do because we only have so many options when choosing the color of shirt, and we want to offer shirt variety to our customers. We're a pretty small operation, and we do our best to work with our limitations.

With the Playoff tee, the reason we went with the OKC is because you can find a billion "LA" shirts out there and we want to show support for not only the team, but for OUR city.

We also have to be very careful when printing likenesses, numbers, logos and even colors that resemble trademarked or copyrighted work (SEE Air Congo, Zombie Sonics).

We know we can't appease everyone, but we'll just keep releasing stuff and hope that the majority appreciates them! If you don't like what we have now, just hang tight, I'm sure we'll throw something out there you'll like. :)

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

I like the playoff shirt, but I haven’t been a fan of hardly any of the other shirts – especially the “Perk” shirt. I had high expectations for it and was disappointed.
I wish there was a way to pick up the shirt rather than having it shipped. That extra $9 in shipping deters me from buying them most of the time.

Blazers sign big man Earl Barron.

Royce is crushed that Robert Swift was not chosen.

;)

Not really a fan of the playoff shirt either... wish there was a girl-friendly option for a lot of the shirts i.e. v-neck or women's cut... Esp for the Westbrook shirt coming! Someday hopefully!

@Grolgar
well thats just sad then.

@JamesSmith

Hilarious!

@gr8ball83

They definitely meant "get" in terms of understand...

@JamesSmith
i thought they meant "get" in terms of acquire...

From the Simmons Predictions

"When I wrote last spring about what life could have been like had Oklahoma City taken Tyreke Evans or Stephen Curry (the one I wish it had taken), the catch was always "That's easy to say now with Curry and Evans playing well, but just wait until Harden gets going."

So … how long do we have to wait?"

Apparently the answer was until right after ASB... And how does that Evans pick look now...? I really never understood how Westbrook was suppose to play next to either an undersized 2 or another slasher with a below average jumpshot and no range... Sorry for the rant but I thought Harden was the best pick before the draft and have not wavered from that belief so its nice to see him playing so well.

Man, simmons is definitely in the, should have taken curry or Evans camp. Harden a bad fit? hmm. Of course this was at the beginning of the season. Would like to see what he thinks now that harden has become a sixth man of the year candidate.

@Grolgar

Its by the Loony Bin Comedy club on NW Expressway and Rockwell. If you google Loony Bin OKC you should be able to find it. I wish they had a closer store... its really out there, but maybe its just because I live in Moore and NW Expressway is the slowest moving street ever.

To help you all "get" the shirts:

1) It must be the beard - James Harden has a beard and that is "his" face on the shirt.
2) The Durantula - KD (or Kevin Durant) has a nickname resembling a tarantula. That's why he looks like a spider on the shirt.
3) Thunder U - The players that went to college like to think of the Thunder like a college team because everyone likes each other so much. The U is for university.
4) Oklahoma - The design is in the shape of the state of Oklahoma. The Thunder is located in Oklahoma. The designs within the Oklahoma come from other shirts, player's numbers and Thunder related items.
5) PERK - The Thunder has a player with the name of Kendrick Perkins. His nickname is Perk.

The rest of the shirts don't really apply anymore so don't worry if you don't "get" those. I hope this explanation helps.

justin :
It’s probably tough to come up with fresh ideas for shirts that don’t annoy the Thunder or player’s union.

Bingo.

PS: I meant to add... the only reason I'm "piling on" is not to be negative about the shirts, cause I too love the effort, but rather, I figured you guys would want feedback so you'd know what people are wanting and looking for. :)

ok, I think I'm becoming obsessed with Liz Cambage

intervention might be required, heh

I hate to pile on to the playoff shirt hate, because I love what DT and Tree and Leaf are doing and completely support you guys, but I gotta agree with the others that the playoff one doesn't do much for me. The biggest thing for me is that it doesn't really have any connection not only to any of the players, but it doesn't have a connection to the team or to the playoffs or to basketball at all. Really, it could just be a generic Oklahoma City shirt. And what's the "Only Kings Conquer" thing about? I'm not being rude or complaining, I legitimately don't know what that's about... maybe it's a reference I missed somewhere.

Anyways, I own the NWA, Thunder U and Broingtons shirts. Love them. And I'll be getting the one with all the references all in the shape of OK. And I will definitely be getting a Hustle Westbrook. Really, just the Perk and playoff shirts haven't done anything for me. Like someone else said, the appeal is having the shirts relate to the gags and idiosyncrasies of the team. (For example, I would've suggested something about a scowl or bully for Perk's shirt.)

I love the Tree and Leaf shirts, keep making them, but the playoff shirt does nothing for me. I'm going to pass.

But, thanks for the effort.

i.e. it's no surprise the two best ones (Air Congo, Zombie Sonics) are the ones they no longer sell.

It's probably tough to come up with fresh ideas for shirts that don't annoy the Thunder or player's union.

Picked up the Harden shirt for my wife for Christmas. But only because Dylan was in the OKC area and was kind enough to snag it for me. The shipping price is killer. And those who are saying the Harden shirt is orange must be color blind. It's red. At least my wife's is.

And you can add me to the dislike of the playoff shirt. I don't hate it, and I'd wear it if one was given to me, but I can't feature shelling out 20 bucks for it.

@Lefty

I had no idea they had an actual store! Thank you.

Where is Tree and Leaf located again? I want to get a discount Krstic shirt... which means I might be the only person on earth with two Krstic shirts (I already have the "Nenad has a posse" shirt that Nick Collison posted on his twitter)...

If you want a good laugh, check out Simmons' Western Conference predictions this year. He missed on basically everything...

MartzMimic :
Can someone give us a short synopsis of Bucher’s thoughts?
I am continually frustrated that so few websites host videos in iPhone-compatible formats.

Maybe you should be frustrated with the fact that Steve Jobs hates flash player, and refuses to make his devices compatible with it. :)

Since we are on the topic, I like the DT shirts alright. I think the Harden, Ibaka, NWA, Krstic Chairman, and Thunder U shirts are all done very well. Some of the others are a little plain or boring (esp the Perk shirt). I appreciate the shirt idea in general though and I hope you keep making them. A lot of people that don't "get" the shirts might just want the types that you can buy at Academy or the Thunder store. That's okay. The DT shirts are supposed to be a little off-brand. That's the point.

@J5
You can go to their store to get the shirt, if you're in the OKC area.

Come on, everyone. There is one thing nice about the shirt. At least we know what the logo would have looked like if the Kings had moved here.

The shirts this season have been a bit of a let-down. I own the Durantula, NWA, and Air Congo shirts with Air Congo being my favorite. This season, there just isn't much connection between the shirts and the storylines on the team. The key is making the shirts actually relate to the gags and idiosyncrasies of the team.

Now I feel kind of special for having a zombie shirt

I like the playoff shirt, but I haven't been a fan of hardly any of the other shirts - especially the "Perk" shirt. I had high expectations for it and was disappointed.

I wish there was a way to pick up the shirt rather than having it shipped. That extra $9 in shipping deters me from buying them most of the time.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't "get" the t-shirts. Maybe I'm too old and out of touch with today's fashion trends, but I would never wear any of that stuff. lol

I thought the shirt only said OC for a few secs...then I saw the OKC. I like the design after i figured it said OKC. It's not Russells 4 pt play, but it's a collison screen, not gonna get any video replays, but solid and needed for the W to come. If I wasn't a tight wad, I mean my wife, I mean I wouldn't mind getting one :)

I think you accidentally linked to a hornets shirt.

@MastrMatt
Agreed, I'm not a fan of the shirt either. I was lucky enough to grab a Zombie shirt before they were but it now has a stain that won't wash out. It's like having a scratch on the Mona Lisa.

I also "don't get" most of the DT shirts. I "get" them in regards to context, but I don't get the colors that they use nor the design. These just are not shirts I'd ever buy, even though I'd love to have a Harden specific shirt (other than the Adidas #13 one I have). Probably the best one I've seen is "Durantula" (horrible yellow shirt) and the "Hustle Westbrook" (again, red?). Is it unlawful to utilize the actual Thunder color scheme? I wish someone would get the OKC Arena's cartoonist's drawing on a shirt.

Sorry Royce ... not a fan of the Tree and Leaf t-shirt. 1st DT shirt I'm going to pass on. Have pretty much all the rest except for the Harden one (because it is Orange) and the ever elusive Zombie Sonic shirt. I have, however, offered them double the price of the shirt for a Zombie Sonic shirt. No go. Oh well ....
