View from the enemy: Roundball Mining Company

File this one under “kind of sort of really important.” Because drop this one and not only have you lost three straight, but now it’s only a two game lead over the Nuggets. Thing is, Oklahoma City has never had an easy time against Denver in the Rockies. That was when the team was centered around Carmelo Anthony, but still, since becoming the Thunder, the team hasn’t won there.

I’m reminded of a big one against the Nuggets last season where OKC had a chance to close in on the Northwest lead, but didn’t show up at all, getting blown out by Denver. Like I said yesterday, I hope this team has learned.

This isn’t the same Denver team we’re used to though. Gone is the premier Durant versus Melo matchup. Gone is Chauncey Billups. Enter a team that moves the ball effortlessly, shares extremely well, defends, rebounds and plays total basketball. The Nuggets are scaring a lot of people right now and not just the Thunder. These guys are dangerous.

Overlooked a bit is that this is your likely first round playoff opponent too. So we’ll get a good strong look at how OKC matches up with the new look Nuggets, as well as a window into what adjustments might be necessary to beat them four times in a series. Potentially, the Thunder could be playing nine very big games against these Nuggets in the next few weeks.

Here’s how big winning the Northwest is: The Nuggets are 16-22 on the road. They’re 31-7 at home. So having the first two in OKC with the Sea of Blue behind them, along with a Game 7 at home is huge. Like massively huge. Like could-decide-the-series huge.

All the Thunder’s eggs aren’t in tonight’s basket though. If OKC loses, it still holds a two-game lead over the Nuggets, but definitely lets Denver tighten the chain a bit and also gives them the upper hand for the tiebreaker. But this is a good team and it’s on the road. It won’t be easy to win. But the Thunder needs to play well mainly just to get back on track and wash the taste of the last two out of their mouths.

Denver coming in: The Nuggets are 15-4 without Melo, have won seven straight and 9-0 at home since the trade. Yowza.

THE MATCHUPS
A lot of interesting head-to-head matchups in this one. Nene versus Kendrick Perkins. Kenyon Martin versus Serge Ibaka. Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari versus Kevin Durant. Russell Westbrook versus Ty Lawson and Raymond Felton.

Arron Afflalo is questionable and not having him obviously hurts the Nuggets, but George Karl has really settled in to playing Felton and Lawson together, which makes Denver tough to match up with. In a game like this, I honestly don’t see that much that Thabo adds if Afflalo is out because defensively, he’s not set up to make that big of an impact. James Harden probably matches up better with both Felton and J.R. Smith, who comes off the bench. (If Afflalo is out, Chandler starts at shooting guard.)

The Thunder needs a good game from either Durant or Westbrook to win. There won’t be any of this combined 11-36 if OKC wants to win. If both play well, the Thunder should handle the Nuggets. I think OKC actually matches up really well with Denver and puts more pressure on them than vice versa. Denver has some tough covers, but remember, the Nuggets have to try and handle KD and Westbrook, two of the best scorers in the league.

It’s a big one tonight. Let’s hope OKC shows up for 48 minutes.

Tip at 8:00 CT. Go Big Game.

So do we want to play la or san antonio???

Re: the lakers and looking old. Unfortunately I think they have the coach and the mentality to turn it on when they need to. They may be old and tired, but I doubt they will look at the way during the playoffs.

justin :
Kobe looked old in this game.

I think this is his last chance to win a title. He has looked old for about the last 5 games.. He has no first step or lateral quickness anymore.

needless to say...i feel MUCH better about the first round now assuming that we play Denver.

wow...terrible loss by LA. makes that denver win in LA not look so impressive..

Kobe looked old in this game.

Kobe could not get a shot off. Utah wins.

Utah up 1... lakers ball...6 seconds left

@justin

I understand your point, but only allowing your "man" to score 5 points and helping on many other plays more than makes up for the few lapses tonight. That one crossover by Chandler was nasty and I think he was expecting some help and got none. No player should ever get from the 3 point line to the rim uncontested like that. Dumb play on Sef and the big that should have helped on that play. I just am praying that Harden continues to progress and Sef coninues to give great effort. Sef sets the tone on the wings..night in and night out.

@Joshua G
Excuse me, he's second in steals/48 minutes.

Gotta take CP3 off that list…that is a joke.

He leads the league in steals, steals/game, and steals/48minutes. How is that a joke?

@cdub00

Thabo did not guard Chandler the entire game. Those are rookie mistakes he made, like not getting a hand up on Eric Gordon against the Clippers. Thabo has great defensive tools but his utility to the team is severely compromised when he makes errors and gives up points, because he's not doing much on the other end. His benefit to the team has a very small margin of error, IMO.

I still think Lat Williams would be a good backup for him next year

i haven't payed attention to lat enough in the 66ers vids i receive from time to time, I've been paying more attention to Millsap who will be one day better as a defender than Thabo, and unlike Thabo, He can actually hit a 3 from time to time and handle the ball.

Why couldn't Watson make 3's like that when he played here?

Haha yeah I agree plainview.. Probably never in a million years but would be pretty sweet... And he could still play with the staters some too when you switch around the lineups... Dude would never want to go that route I bet... Though I wonder if Boston will be able to keep him

justin :The play where Thabo fouled Felton for the and-one and when he got beat badly back door by Wilson Chandler are plays that you can’t make if you’re supposed to be a stopper. Those are free points you’re giving the team, and in one instance it was off the ball. Even if Thabo was playing great one on one defense consistently (he isn’t), losing your focus negates that advantage.

He is human guy. How many points did Chandler have tonight?

Shooter we have enough ball handlers

PNT :
Gordon Hayward is leading the way for Utah.

i hate that dude lol, i don't know why his game is just ugly to me, at times i think he's worse on offense than Thabo is. obviously with more ball movement in that team his numbers won't show it, but man im just saying. thats my personal opinion.

PNT :Gordon Hayward is leading the way for Utah.

He might be surprising some folks...

Should we get a backup for Durant thats a ball handler or a shooter?

@justin

I agree, but our inside defense is solid now.

Gordon Hayward is leading the way for Utah.

@DJ 7

@justin

Thats agreeable...debatable, but agreeable. Personally, I think Sef is better than the 2 Brewers or Marion..but the rest are legit.

I think you have to put Melo on that list.

Just kidding. :)

@cdub00
see, sometimes assumptions are right ;)

justin :
There are probably others but that’s off the top of my head. Wing defense isn’t nearly as important as big defense though…

Ray Allen, Trevor Ariza, and even J.R. Smith have proven that from time to time.

On your own team for that matter:)

Alot of player hatin, assuming and false statements in here

Joshua G :
Tony Allen
Shane Battier
Chris Paul
Ron Artest
Nicholas Batum
I think there are others that come close. But there’s at least 5 that are better than Thabo.

Raja Bell, Gerald Wallace, Pietrus has room to improve, and Thabos in there some where.

There are probably others but that's off the top of my head. Wing defense isn't nearly as important as big defense though...

@Sammy

Joel myers is also one of the biggest homer announcers in the league. Spiro is a hundred times better than him. I don't know a lakers fan who likes myers. No one ever has anything bad to say about Spiro. Don't get to hear Brian Davis that much but you guys do not want myers calling games for okc.

Tony Allen, Luc Ricard Mbah a Moute, Ron Artest, Luol Deng, Trevor Ariza, Andre Iguodala, Gerald Wallace, Ronnie Brewer, Corey Brewer, maybe Shawn Marion. I'd take those guys over Thabo defensively right now. Thabo had added utility in that, theoretically, he can guard SG's. But he has been far from consistent with that so far this year IMO.

Against SG's I'd probably prefer Harden overall. If it's against a bigger guy, Thabo is better.

@Joshua G

Chris Paul? The other 4 are agreeable...

@gr8ball83

Thank you Webster. I knew what Plantar is...thats why i said there may be some validity to it. however, if he can still play better D than Harden with an injury, that speaks to his defensive superiority IMO.

cdub00 :@DJ 7 lol…different city and franchise legally speaking there dude. I realize the players didn’t just disappear. What a DB.

oh no i agree with that, i hate when the former Sonic fans fail to acknowledge that it was Bennett’s management that did all the drafting, but im just stating that a few of those players we’re in OKC’s first season. So quit being a donkey and be conversational not argumentative, That or most people on this board will start to ignore you like they did to OKC Baby at one point and then you would seem pretty stupid to post if you get no response

huh? because you made a dumbass comment out of turn? hahaha

how was that a dumbass comment? by stating that the starting 5 on that Sonics team in the link for the game box scores was at one point a starting 5 in the Thunders first season is nowhere near a dumbass comment. You need to get the stick out of your ass. I'm not responding to you anymore, you don't give me anything useful besides new ways of being a complete douche. Cheers

Tony Allen
Shane Battier

@cdub00
Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory process of the plantar fascia. Longstanding cases of plantar fasciitis often demonstrate more degenerative changes than inflammatory changes, in which case they are termed plantar fasciosis.[1]
The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of connective tissue originating on the bottom surface of the calcaneus (heel bone) and extending along the sole of the foot towards the five toes.

that would definitely hinder perimeter defense I would think.

@gr8ball83

Still assuming I see.....

Green would make a great back up to KD next year.

@gr8ball83

There may be some validity to this theory..

@andrew
if you don't immediately name 10 better perimeter defenders you're going to be called a name... just guessing

justin :
Thabo got 2nd team all defense last year despite playing much worse after the all star break. He’s a good defender, but once again he’s flaming out to close the season.
Seems like a trend.

his mins are so much higher than when he was in chicago, i dont think he can handle it
