The Thunder beat the Clippers 112-108 to win the Northwest

BOX SCORE

Nice to finally have that out of the way. Officially, the Thunder are 2010-11 Northwest Division champions for the first time since 2004-05 when the team wasn’t here.

Said Kevin Durant: “It’s a great accomplishment, but we want something bigger.”

Naturally, the Thunder tried to make it a bit more difficult than it needed to be. A couple late defensive lapses, mixed with some poor offense, stirred with problems getting the ball inbounds, combined with a missed free throw and OKC had to withstand a late push by the Clippers to take home a 112-108 win.

I think there’s a certain level of justified disappointment that the Thunder didn’t rock the Clippers a bit better. After the disaster in Los Angeles four days ago, it felt like there would be a high level of revenge to be had. And while the Thunder held a double-digit lead for a large portion of the fourth, much in the way they do, the Thunder lost focus for a couple stretches late and made it a bit close.

Probably the key play in the game was Serge Ibaka contesting a massive poster attempt by Blake Griffin with 20 seconds left. Kevin Durant had just missed a free throw that would’ve taken OKC’s lead to four and if Griffin had finished that, the lead would’ve been just one. But Ibaka fouled him hard and Griffin split his free throws. That meant Durant was able to ice the game the next time with two free throws.

It was a game where offense and defense was great for five minutes and bad for the next five. Blake Griffin poured in 35 points on 15-20 shooting and that’s the thing: That guy’s good. He’s a tough cover for anyone, and the Thunder have the players to check him. Mo Williams was hot from 3 (4-6), Eric Gordon made some shots and with all of that, the Clips were tough to put away.

It was also a game that serves as a good example of why OKC has to have Russell Westbrook playing well (26 points, seven rebounds, seven assists). While Eric Maynor was terrific Tuesday, the offense stalled a bit to start the fourth. Westbrook checked back in two minutes earlier than usual and immediately hit a nice baseline jumper, then dropped two free throws. After what felt like was going to be a dry spell of offense, Russ sparked the team quickly. I understand that frustration with “hero mode” and how he can stop the ball and therefore, the offense. But he scores and is very good at it. And that’s what the Thunder needs in most cases.

One thing to keep in mind though, this was the second of a back-to-back coming off a pretty emotional win in Denver. Not a great excuse, but it definitely is one. Durant said after the game he felt the team relaxed a bit. It was pretty plain to see. They likely wanted to coast their way to the buzzer, but the Clips kept making shots.

NOTES:

  • Best play of the night: Because of transition, Perk got caught man-to-man in an iso on Randy Foye. Perk got in a great defensive stance and completely shut off Foye’s drive attempt. He missed a runner, OKC got the rebound and Perk let out a nice big fist pump.
  • Dallas lost, so OKC is now just one game back for third in the West.
  • Perk missed eight shots at the rim in the first half. However, he had nine offensive rebounds in the first half. Though it was a bit of the Courtney Paris routine of missing and getting your own over and over. If you were wondering, the NBA record is 13 by Charles Barkley. Most in a game is 21 by Moses Malone. The nine offensive rebounds were the most by a Thunder player since the move. Previous holder? Russell Westbrook with eight. That’s probably the wildest part of the whole thing.
  • Oh, for the game, Perk finished with 10 offensive boards and 17 overall. Man work down there, kids.
  • KD settled for the 3 a bunch again (2-8) but here’s the thing: When he’s open, he’s got to shoot it. There was only one that I can think of that was forced. The rest were good looks. He finished with 29 on 9-23 shooting and did a nice job creating a bit late.
  • Durant has to lead the league in in-and-out misses. He had four tonight.
  • I’ve said it a few times already but I love the way Scott Brooks is using Daequan Cook and I love what Cook is adding off the bench. Cook came in and immediately dropped two 3s, then created a dunk for Nazr Mohammed. He only gets 5-10 minutes a night, but that’s all he needs.
  • Chris Kaman picked up a technical in the third quarter and as ref Scott Wall called it, he said “Bam!” when he gestured the “T” part. Why do officials always do that? Do they just love calling techs that much?
  • What a scramble in the third quarter. Perk tried to feed Westbrook on the baseline, but the ball got poked away. Ibaka dove on the floor to grab it and kicked to Westbrook who was open in the corner. Russ had to fire with the shot clock winding down. He missed but grabbed his own rebound, kicked to KD who drilled a 3. It was a huge swing and put OKC up nine.
  • Al-Farouq Aminu really looks like he has no idea how to wear a headband.
  • If you care about such things, the ovation for Blake Griffin was much, much quieter this time around. In fact, he was booed after each big dunk he had (and he had many). Of that he said, “It’s one of those things. The Thunder’s their team. They’re not going to cheer for me just because I’m from Oklahoma. I didn’t expect it. I’m sure there were a lot of Oklahoma State fans in the audience so I don’t expect to get cheers from them.”
  • A lot were wondering why Blake was booed. Here’s my thought(s): First, I think a good amount of people were turned off with his last game against the Thunder (myself included). Then on top of that, KD was pretty adamant about Blake still being the man in OKC. So maybe it was an effort to get behind KD a bit. (Also, I thought Blake was much, much better in this one. No drama, no posturing. Maybe playing in front of mom and dad helped.)
  • I don’t know what happened to end the first half. The Thunder called timeout with about 10 seconds left. The ball went in to James Harden, but he completely lost track of time or something. When the clock hit two seconds, he chucked a deep 3. Scott Brooks’ look at him after the play was hysterical.
  • Has there ever NOT been a fun Kiss Cam?
  • I think Barry Switzer has sort of become OKC’s version of Jack Nicholson. At every game, he always gets shown on the video board and always gets a big ovation. I think that comparison should tell you a lot about the differences between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles.

Think one second back to your expectations for this season in September. You probably said, “Oh, the four seed would be awesome, but I expect the five or six.” You probably thought the Thunder would finish behind Denver or Utah (or both) in the Northwest. You probably didn’t really think this team was headed here. So keep that in mind as the Thunder celebrates this division title. It’s easy to get caught up in the now and current success and forget how good this really is. This has been a really terrific season. Truly, it has been.

But like KD said, it’s time to look for a little something more.

Next up: Denver at home Friday.

@NuggFan

That's neighborly.

I'd interested in some opinion from and dialog with Nuggets fans if it can stay thoughtful and fairly civil.

Gents, Congrats on the 2010-2011 Northwest Division Title and reppin' one of the, if not the strongest division in the NBA. Hang the banner you deserve it! This is a great message board and I will be spending some time on here educating myself about the Nuggets new rival and giving some biased opinion I am sure. Looking forward to the Playoffs as of now not sure if its gonna be you or the Mavs in the first rd. - Peace

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

Perkins-Thabo is +5.3 per 49 minutes in 182 minutes. 91% of those minutes are the starting lineup, which has added a few strong to really strong games recently to go along with the very strong first game. Often it is just near neutral.

When the nba.com subgroup data is missing, the 2nd best place to turn is basketballvalue.com. I went to Perkins' lineup page, downloadded it and sorted for the Thabo lines and compiled that data.

The Mo Pete issue is a bit irksome. I've thought about writing them to fix / change some things but haven't found the right name / e-mail to make it worth the time yet.

@Mark!

You must be right. Too bad that site doesn't give any explanations. Maybe two person +/- isn't important enough for a blogger to track.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

Hmm... maybe last 10 games = last 10 active games for that pair. So, Mo Pete is the last 10 games he played w/ that combo? I agree it's weird, not sure what to make of that either.

@gr8ball83
No doubt...my comment was toungue in cheek...

@kfmsooner
ha, yeah except Green would have played 42 minutes a game, and gibson about 3 minutes every 20 games

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
I chalk it up to randomness. Depsite Russ leading the league tin TO's he has also had games of zero turnover where hes has the ball in his hands infinitely longer than Blake. Im not bashing Blake, just Danrells comparisonn was a little dramatic. I think his assist average is probably his most impressive stat, because the rest you expect.

f5alcon :@kfmsoonerwould have held back ibakas development.
It would have been nice to have Gibson and let him hold back Jeff Green's development for 1.5 years...:)

f5alcon :@DavyTheWise

green week

Ah i see, strange color they chose for green week. I guess baby poo green isn't worn by any of the teams...

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
lol

@kfmsooner
would have held back ibakas development.

@gr8ball83
maybe that is why KD bricked all those 3s last night

@Mark!

That data shows that in the last 10 games, Morris Peterson and Eric Maynor have played 22 minutes and 23 seconds together, resulting in a +/- of 8.

Maybe I just don't know how to interpret it correctly.

@f5alcon
In honor of Jeff Green

From Hollinger's All-Defense article:

"Second team: Taj Gibson, Chicago (minus-1.59). It's rare for a second-year player to move this far up the list in the frontcourt, but Gibson has shown as both a starter and a reserve that he can impact games with his length and mobility. I'm particularly fond of the Gibson-Omer Asik pairing off Chicago's bench; opponents simply don't score any points when those two are manning the frontcourt together. Gibson is the prototype 4 for the way the game is played today -- he can pick up guards on switches, he can challenge shots on the perimeter, but he has just enough size to defend the rim and hold his own against post-ups"

Remember that Taj Gibson is who the Bulls drafted with the 1st round pick we sent them for Thabo. Just sayin...

Whats up with the green headbands all the NBA players are wearing? Did i miss the memo or what?

@Daniel Plainview

Pretty special for a rookie to put up that line without a turnover. Russ is in his 3rd year already and leads the entire league in turnovers.

At least, it's pretty impressive to me.

Sorry, *I really DONT think it was worth..." To wit, not noteworthy

Jax Raging Bile Duct :@Daniel
Plainview
As Martz mentioned, Darnell qualified that with the 0 turnovers.

Big deal, turn overs often alot to do with 5 other people on the court that you cant always anticipate, regardless of how careful you are with the ball. So what if they had similar stats, or better and 2 or 3 T.O.'s, I really think it was worth mentioning on Darnells part, signifies nothing. He;s making molehills out of molecules

First post here.

I had the pleasure of taking my girlfriend to her first Thunder game last night. When we first got together a year and a half ago she thought my love for the Thunder was 'silly' and wouldn't even sit down and watch a game with me.

Last night was a complete 180. Not only did she sport a Thunder t-shirt to the game, but by the end she was standing and cheering with me.

It was great to see Griffin, who I am usually a fan of. And even though he should have won an Oscar for his acting on Saturday night, it was really cool to see such an athlete performing in person.

Having said that, it was even better to see our Thunder come out with a tight victory at home. It was a great night!

@Mark!

FWIW, Perkins/Thabo isn't in the top 50 for +/-

Jax Raging Bile Duct :
Also, does anyone know if +/- is recorded for player pairs?
I know 82games does lineups, but if I wanted to see game by game +/- when Perkins and Thabo are on the court together, how could I get something like that?
Every time I see those two in the game together I just expect bad things to happen, and tonight was no different.

This site has the total +/- for different player combinations (use the drop down boxes at the top):
http://www.nba.com/statistics/plusminus/plusminus.jsp

If you want more detail than that, the only suggestion I have is to do some manual work over at popcornmachine.net

Division champs baby!! Wasn't looking so great there in the 1st quarter, but as usual, our bench saved us. Glad to see Westbrook finally break out of him slump. Cook was great during that short stretch of the 2nd quarter. Two 3's and a nice setup for a Nazr dunk. Good stuff.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if Perkins could make a layup? Still, 17 boards is nothing to sneeze at. And after he switched onto Blake in the 4th quarter, Griffin didn't even so much as shoot.

Clippers announcers were so annoying, saying they "polled" the fans before-hand about who was the bigger star in OKC: Durant or Griffin and that it was split right down the middle. Then they showed some clips of peoples' responses and almost all said Durant.

I like that the guys didn't make much of the division title after the game, but man, I did think a wee bit o celebration would've been nice. I would've loved to see the champagne flowing, but hopefully we'll get to see that later on in the season. =)

Hang the banner. Preferably Friday night or no later than the Milwaukee game since it is the regular season finale.

@Daniel@f5alcon

I agree with you guys, theres no reason to not hang up a banner for an accomplishment. Just like its not wrong to reward OSU's players for the best season in school history last season. No matter what spoiled OU fans think or say about it.

@Daniel
i agree, id like to hang something.

@DavyTheWise
not just that his shots are created by others, but the ones that aren't are on the low block or faced up jumpshots. Like i said, im not trying to take anything away from him, i'm just saying.

@f5alcon
I think we should hang up any divisional banners we get. We're not the Celtics or Lakers, we don't have double digit championships or retired numbers. Why not hang up some banners for winning the Northwest?

Its alot easier to have 0 turnovers when the vast majority of your shots are created by others. RW and KD create their own shots. Putting the ball on the floor highly increases the chances for TOs. Not that Blake wasn't impressive, i just don't know if its a fair comparison since he handles the ball in the open/half court relatively very little.

Don't most teams hang banners for division titles?

@Thomas
a division title we might hang a banner for, i would assume we would just to get something up there.

@Daniel Plainview

As Martz mentioned, Darnell qualified that with the 0 turnovers.

Skeletor :
I hate this line from Darnell’s writeup, “”For comparisons sake only, my mind is wondering whether Durant or Russell Westbrook have ever had that kind of stat line.”
Oh, how easily people forget Durant’s games over Miami, NO, and the Christmas-Day Denver game this year just to name a few.
And peopled booed Blake not just the barking and staring. Blake flopped a lot and did a lot of showboating last Saturday. It was annoying.

They both have, many times. he is the Thunders main correspondent and hes unaware of this? How many career triple doubles has Russ had, like 7?
Hey, Darnell, its quite easy:
http://espn.go.com/nba/gameleaders

BenAU :

justin :
LeBron has many more minutes. KD has a higher points per minute than LeBron.

LeBron: 8439 points in 13061 minutes = .646
Durant: 8023 points in 11797 minutes = .680

Wrong
KD .679 ppm
LBJ .689 ppm

My wife didn't even chuckle!

I wasn't at the game but one play as Westbrook got raped on his way to the basket. I yelled at my TV ," hey ref is this your cell phone it says you have 3 missed calls" 

@kfmsooner

I have faith presti will trade him. very similar situation to green. I think there is some young team with a poor record that will give up an early second round pick to get a proven defender.

I know I talk about this all the time…but the Thabo/Harden thing is getting ridiculous. Thabo plays 25 minutes last night, JH 23. Why? Harden hasn’t been shooting the ball all that well, but he is playing well in other facets. He had 5 assists and no turns last night, got to the free throw line, and played pretty good defense on Gordon. There wasn’t a time that I was watching the game saying that Gordon was killing Harden. Harden hasn’t shot the ball all that well, but, since the trade, his FG% is 46.4, 32.3 from 3, he has shot 110 FTs (nice) with 2.4 assists and a 1.56 a:turn ratio while boasting a 61.2 TS%. His defense is much, much better. When was the last time Harden was just killed by someone? It’s not like Harden is Kyle Korver…

Thabo, on the other hand, just doesn’t deserve the minutes. He’s the worst starting shooting guard from an offensive standpoint, even worse than Bogans. Thabo is 1-17 from the 3pt line since the Charlotte game and 8-36 from 3 since the trade. He has shot a total of 14 free throws in the last 23 games. 42.6% FG, 48.5 TS%, both of which are terrible when you consider Thabo doesn’t take shots in the face of the shot clock winding down, doesn’t drive into traffic, etc. He catches and shoots WIDE OPEN shots and cannot convert them. Since the trade, he averages less than 1 ORBD per game and just over 1 assist per game. In other words, his offensive value is basically ZERO.

So, for Thabo to have value, he has to be a beast on defense. John Hollinger listed 20 wing defenders (8 SGs) on his All-Defense team (including the honorable mentions) and Thabo wasn’t one of them. I don’t have confidence that he’ll be named to any of the NBA’s All-Defense teams. If Thabo were one of the top 3 defensive wings, I’d be OK with him playing. But, I don’t think he is this year. Maybe he’s hurt. I don’t know. But if Thabo is only the 10th 12th, 15th, best defensive wing, should he be playing? No…but that’s what we’re stuck with.

Brooks won’t change, and I think it will eventually lead to our playoff demise.

Joel :

PNT :I love the fact that even Griffin gets booed.You don’t wear the Thunder uniform? You are hated, no matter who you are.

On one of his showboating dunks, I yelled out “You’ll find no love here, Blake!” Everyone around me chuckled.

On one of his early flops he had under the basket with no contact and his mouth agape I yelled out "You flop like a fish out of water. Best shut your mouth before someone noodles ya. Only a few people chuckled.

One critcism of the OKC organization...During the pregame on the radio, Matt Pinto was talking about the possibility of clinching the division last night. He kept referring to it as OKC having the opportunity to clinch their 'first' division title. Obviously, many division titles were won in Seattle, but Pinto never mentioned that, never qualified his remarks as 'first in OKC' or anything else...The franchise needs to either embrace the Seattle legacy or not. It can't be both ways.

I think we should get the highest seed we can get. Resting players, losing games, etc., just isn't a great way to build confidence. We don't need to 'duck' the Lakers or anyone else. If we can get the 3 seed, let's get it.

Great that we won the division. Feels nice. Pretty good game last night, a few bad stretches, but overall a nice performance.

Some are talking hanging banners for this meaningless division championship. I hope they don't do that. I think you should only hang banners for championships and possibly for making the finals. I remember when the Kings hung a banner for best record in the regular season years ago they were roundly ridiculed.

What Darnell was specifically talking about was having that kind of stat line with zero turnovers.

PNT :
I love the fact that even Griffin gets booed.
You don’t wear the Thunder uniform? You are hated, no matter who you are.

On one of his showboating dunks, I yelled out "You'll find no love here, Blake!" Everyone around me chuckled.

Tulsa won game 1 in the 1st round of the d-league playoffs.

Cole Aldrich with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks
Latavious Williams is out with a injury

I love the fact that even Griffin gets booed.
You don't wear the Thunder uniform? You are hated, no matter who you are.

Darnell is talking about Blake's stat line

I hate this line from Darnell's writeup, ""For comparisons sake only, my mind is wondering whether Durant or Russell Westbrook have ever had that kind of stat line."

Oh, how easily people forget Durant's games over Miami, NO, and the Christmas-Day Denver game this year just to name a few.

And peopled booed Blake not just the barking and staring. Blake flopped a lot and did a lot of showboating last Saturday. It was annoying.

Damn MJ missed 64 games
