George Karl prefers to play the Mavs, not Thunder

The Nuggets have a pretty big game Friday night versus the Thunder. And not because Denver has a shot to catch Oklahoma City, because the Thunder already clinched the Northwest.

Nope, it’s because if George Karl had it his way, he might prefer his Nuggets actually lose.

Via ESPN Dallas:

“If we had to pick and choose on it, we would probably say 55 percent Dallas, 45 percent Oklahoma City, only because Oklahoma City is athletic like we are and they have two great players,” Denver coach George Karl told ESPN 103.3′s Galloway and Company, referring to Thunder forward Kevin Durant and point guard Russell Westbrook. “They have two All-Stars who are really in their prime and have never won on the playoff stage. I just think right now our speed might have more effect against Dallas than it will against Oklahoma City.”

OK, so maybe he doesn’t really want to lose to the Thunder Friday, but it would definitely go a long way in pushing OKC to the three-seed. Right now, the Thunder are just a game back of Dallas with four to play. And OKC sort of has the upper hand. The Thunder actually own the tiebreaker over the Mavs despite losing the season series 2-1 because division winners get precedent.

But it’s certainly interesting that Karl would be so candid about such a thing. Most when asked just play the “We’re not thinking about them, just about us” card. Karl was honest. He doesn’t like the matchup with OKC. He saw it first hand Tuesday night as the Thunder beat the Nuggets 101-94. With Kendrick Perkins inside on Nene and no one to guard Kevin Durant, Karl sees a very tough series ahead.

He’s right though; Denver does match up much better with Dallas. Karl has Wednesday night’s 104-96 win in Dallas fresh on the brain and saw how his team really outquicked the Mavs to death. Dallas just doesn’t have the horses to keep up with Denver’s athletes.

I wrote about all this from the OKC perspective earlier today. To me, it doesn’t matter a whole lot who you play in the first round. Blazers, Nuggets, Hornets or someone else — bring ‘em on.

But if Nene and Ty Lawson suddenly come down with the flu tomorrow afternoon around 4 p.m., we’ll know Karl was pretty serious about this.

Hard to blame him for wanting none of the Thunder in the playoffs. After all, the Thunderdome can be hazardous to your health you know.

Haha. Speaking your mind is the worst decision you could make

At least read the title of the article before you start coming in here spouting out your ass.

cdub00 :What free agent is everybody excited about this offseason? Should we try to keep Nazr?

I think if we can resign Nazr and Cook, I’d be good. Let everyone else stew for an offseason, and we’ll be good.
Whatever we do this offseason, the #1 factor has to be saving enough cap room to sign RW, SI, JH, in that order, over the next 2 offseasons. If we can have a lineup for the next 4-5 years of RW/JH/KD/SI/KP, I think we can be title contenders.

I agree. Its hard not to be excited about the next 5 yrs. Thunder Up!

cdub00 : Should we try to keep Nazr?

I could be wrong, but I think we'd be crazy not to re-sign Nazr if the price is right. I think he and Collison fit together like Serge and Perk. I also get the impression that he likes playing for the Thunder at this point in his career, so that will give us some bargaining power. If you're going to be on a 2nd team, there's not many better than the Thunder's.

gr8ball83 :@cdub00Yeah, I’d like to keep Nazr, and Cook if he doesn’t cost too much. I’m still hoping Lat Williams can be our backup for KD, but we shall see

I agree with both your comments, I have hope for Lat, but dont want to rely on the hope

kfmsooner : Would Green have agreed to come off the bench for the Thudner? My first response is why does Green get a choice? If the coach wants him off the bench, that’s what he does.

That's what I was saying, too! Since when do the players get to choose? Also, we shouldn't forget that the version of Serge that we have playing next to Perk is NOT the version of Serge we would have had if he was playing next to Nenad. To go back to one of your earlier comments...I wasn't saying that Green could only be benched for a Hall of Fame PF. I'm just saying that it makes the decision VASTLY easier when you're choosing between Green, Kevin Garnett, or last year's version of Serge. If those were my 3 choices, I'd start Garnett, keep Serge as his back-up, and move Green over to be KD's back-up.

@Mark!
haha, I thought you meant as an offensive dynamic, unstoppable, duo

@cdub00
Yeah, I'd like to keep Nazr, and Cook if he doesn't cost too much. I'm still hoping Lat Williams can be our backup for KD, but we shall see

@Mark!

And by defend, I mean as a decision :P

kfmsooner :@TaoMaas

Also, a Krstic/Ibaka pairing would have been more successful than Krstic/Green.

This is the part that's most material IMO. I think you can make some valid pros/cons between Green and Ibaka as individual players, but in terms of lineup I dunno how you can defend Green/Krstic.

@cdub00
I'm hoping we can resign Nazr and Cook, maybe dealing Mullens and Nate if we can for a serviceable back up swingman.

@cdub00
I think Nazr should remain in teh mix. he has been incredibly consistent right from teh go, especially on teh offensive glass. Not sure if Ive mentioned that before.

What free agent is everybody excited about this offseason? Should we try to keep Nazr?

@TaoMaas
That's an interesting question. Would Green have agreed to come off the bench for the Thudner? My first response is why does Green get a choice? If the coach wants him off the bench, that's what he does. Second, to me, it wasn't as much if Green should have come off the bench as much as it was his minutes. In early January, Green was 4th in the NBA in minutes played. That's when I started to really go south on Green in a Thunder uniform. There were other guys that could play and deserved minutes.

It was clear about 10 games into the season that Ibaka was a better PF than Green, especially defensively. You could argue Green was a better overall player, but at PF, Ibaka was/is better. Also, a Krstic/Ibaka pairing would have been more successful than Krstic/Green.

somewhere in the past royce said he went to americas pub and didnt enjoy it

gr8ball83 :@cdub00

you don’t really think that do you?

I think its irrelevant. Green is a celtic. I loved the trade. Perk is an absolute beast.

cdub00 :@Lefty
I didn’t say he was.

Fair enough. Just misunderstood you. Sorry!

@TaoMaas

I think I've said he would not re-sign with the Thunder to come off the bench.

The debate is still relevant because it's kind of happening again...

justin :

TaoMaas :@justin Sorry, but Serge does not equal Kevin Garnett.

So? He was still better than Jeff Green all season. Brooks did have the luxury to bring Jeff Green off the bench, which is where he belonged, but he never did it.

Hey, I've said all along that I thought Green's rightful role was coming off the bench to rest KD. However, you've assured me on several occasions that Green would never agree to go to the second team. So, which is it?

@cdub00
you don't really think that do you?

@kfmsooner
texadelphia's patio is pretty nice, might be too windy today though.

TaoMaas :@justin
Sorry, but Serge does not equal Kevin Garnett.

So, Jeff Green could only be benched for a HOF PF? I'm not saying Serge should have started the whole year, but the minutes Brooks gave to Green, especially at PF, could have been curbed. Ibaka/White could have taken up the slack.

But this is an old debate...let's not tear into it again...

I think ur wrong. Green is a better player than ibaka. Remember, ibaka is developing and still hasn't reached his potential. To start him over green would be, well, acenine. Doesn't matter though, green ain't here no more. Find something different to rip brooks apart for. Geez.

@Grolgar
I've been to America's Pub. It's not bad, especially if you are on a budget...But, I've only been there a few times. Brix is nice, Rooster's is cool...haven't been to the other places.

@Daniel Plainview

That was Game 2, the close loss in LA.

TaoMaas :

kfmsooner : Doc Rivers is a coaching genius to figure those things out…

I think Doc’s coaching genius is helped by the fact that he has a Hall of Fame PF to play in his starting line-up, so he can afford to play Green where he belongs. Coach Brooks didn’t have that luxury.

Brooks did have a young defensive PF that needed playing time, not to mention DJ White (8.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg with Charlotte). He had options, he just didn't use them...If Green started or came off the bench or whatever, having Green at 4th in the NBA in minutes played was a bad move.

There is no reason Brooks couldn't have reined in Green's outside shooting.

I say we win by 15 pts tonight. Doesn't matter, but I still love to see the Thunder win.

TaoMaas :@justin

I've been looking at some other teams message boards just for fun and it's funny that nobody wants anything to do with the Thunder. The Spurs, Mavs, Lakers and Nuggets all have the question posed who would you rather play and none of them want anything to do with us. You have to love that respect. I think they have more faith in us than we do.

@Patrick James
Was game 3 the one where Serge had 7 blocks and KD 4? That was amazing

@Patrick James
yeah i am only going to this last 2 regular season games because i paid for them, otherwise i dont care about the regular season anymore.

kfmsooner :

thunderstruck4life :Hey guys quick question… How early should I get to the game tonight to get “the full experience”? Ha

Do you have kids, or just adults? With kids, I like to get to the arena an hour or more early. They have giveaways all around the arena and outside the arena, but once the stuff is gone, they close the booths down. Nothing real big to get excited about, but sometimes there is T-Shirts, Foam Fingers, key chains, etc. Also, since the season is winding down, they usually try to ‘clean out the closet’ of any dated material that they can’t give away next season. I went to the last game of ’09 with my kids and they cleaned up on Thunder junk.
If you don’t have kids, or don’t care about giveaways…30 minutes early is fine with me. If you want someplace to go before the game, I always go to America’s Pub. The Sports Animal is there, and they have $5 burger, fries, beer. Not bad…

DO NOT GO TO AMERICA'S PUB. I REPEAT: DO NOT GO TO AMERICA'S PUB. It really is the worst place on earth. To get the full experience just get to the game at 6:45pm. There are lots of places in Bricktown to go: Brix, Texadelphia, Roosters. You may want to try eating at Iguana (9th and Broadway) and taking their bus to the game (they'll pick you up). There are plenty of places to go, but do not go to America's Pub.

@TaoMaas
I sensed he was being facetious

Maybe someday...but not now...and certainly not last year.

I can't overstate how ready I am for the playoffs. I just watched that video they played in the arena before Game 3 last year and it might have gotten a little dusty in here. Just a little, not REALLY dusty.

@justin

Sorry, but Serge does not equal Kevin Garnett.

Ozarkhick :Then Green destroys a Chicago double team in the low post…
Then Green comes back and digs an unsightly trench in Boozer’s arm on a hard foul.
this Jekyll and Hyde crap is what made us used to hate each other on this board...

All players have up's and down's. We just don't focus on them to the extent we did with Green, and now Thabo.

@TaoMaas

Brooks had a better PF on the roster than Green. Let's not pretend that Brooks was forced into playing Green 36+ minutes a game every night...

kfmsooner : Doc Rivers is a coaching genius to figure those things out…

I think Doc's coaching genius is helped by the fact that he has a Hall of Fame PF to play in his starting line-up, so he can afford to play Green where he belongs. Coach Brooks didn't have that luxury.

@Skeletor
That should get him to chase you around the outfield, er, bar.

gr8ball83 :@kfmsooner

If you go where the Sports Animal is you should definitely try to pick a fight with Traber.

OKC needs some better NBA debate/talk on sports radio. Every time I listen to them mentioned on the Sports Animal they repeat themselves.

gr8ball83 :@kfmsooner

If you go where the Sports Animal is you should definitely try to pick a fight with Traber.

Haha. That's funny.

Tell Traber that though he "played in the bigs" he sucked and only "being in the bigs" for 2 years is nothing worth bragging about. He'll go crazy.

@kfmsooner
