Friday Bolts – 4.8.11

J.A. Adande of ESPN.com on small markets: “And it’s not about getting the fans to buy in so  much as it is instilling belief in the best players. Oklahoma City has done that with Kevin Durant, who took a step in the opposite direction of the spotlight-seeking stars this past summer and committed to a five-year extension with the Thunder. When asked recently about the challenge of attracting other stars to join him in Oklahoma City, Durant said, “That’s come to my mind. I guess that’s the way we did it with the draft. They have to come if they’re drafted. But if we continue to just play hard and be a team that comes out and is known for playing hard and playing together. Hopefully, guys that love to play basketball will love to be a part of it.”

Chris Tomasson for HoopsHype on KD: “A lot of people forgot about me this year,’’ said Durant, averaging 27.8 points. “So I guess if I get the scoring title, I guess people will remember me. Last year, I kind of jumped on the scene. I’m the old guy. I’m not going out there and averaging 40 points a game and stuff like that. So people forgot about me. So, hopefully, the scoring title I guess will let people to know, ‘Hey, I’m here still.’’’

Matt Moore of CBSSports.com on KD’s MVP thoughts: “Durant probably should be on the list. But if we’re looking for marks, his field goal, free throw, and 3-point shooting percentages are all down. He’s taken a slightly lower role in the offense (while still having one of the top usage rates in the league), and his rebounds are down as well. Last season’s results shouldn’t bear out in the current MVP race, but they’re going to.”

TrueHoop TV talking MVP.

TBJ positional rankings have Serge Ibaka in the top 10 now at power forward: “Since the beginning of March, he’s averaged 11.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocks on 52 percent shooting. The Thunder’s frontcourt of Kendrick Perkins and Ibaka is as defensively imposing as any in the NBA now that Perkins has defected from Boston. In continuation of Dikembe Mutombo’s standard of having an awesome full name if you’re from the Republic of the Congo, Ibaka’s full name is Sergeballu LaMu Sayonga Loom Walahas Jonas Hugo Ibaka. Leading the league in blocks likely looms for him next season.”

Technically, the Thunder haven’t been eliminated from the two-seed.

Vote for the All-Scrappy Team.

John Hollinger on Most Improved mentioned James Harden and Russell Westbrook, though this bit about Westbrook is odd: “The difference is that Rose isn’t taking food off a dominant scorer’s plate. In Westbrook’s case, it’s hurt Kevin Durant and possibly derailed what was expected to be an MVP season for him. (I’d also argue that playing with Rose has hurt Carlos Boozer, but he’s not a player of Durant’s caliber). Durant has a dramatically higher true shooting percentage (TS%) each of the past two years and obviously is capable of creating his own shot; for Westbrook to use more possessions than Durant, as he’s done this year, is madness. The fact that Durant led the league in scoring this year while playing with Westbrook should be the first bullet point on his Hall of Fame plaque. Don’t get me wrong — Westbrook is a fantastic player and a star by any measure, but there’s also some weird, weird mojo here, and I have to wonder if this year’s improvement came at the expense of the bigger picture.”

Will a banner be raised tonight in OKC?

Zach Lowe of SI on the silliness of the divisions: “Friday night may bring the ridiculous spectacle of the Thunder, who play in Oklahoma City, which is located here, raising a banner to commemorate their Northwest Division championship. It’ll provide the latest example of why the NBA needs to scrap its current divisional alignments, which make no sensem particularly in the Western Conference, and occasionally provide division winners with tie-breaker advantages they don’t deserve.”

Someone with that hollinger story about Westbrook en Harden?

At this point, I'd be very surprised if things didn't end up this way:

1. Spurs
2. Lakers
3. Thunder
4. Mavs
5. Nuggets
6. Trailblazers
7. Hornets
8. Grizzlies
.

@Sammy

I could have sworn they did. Guess I'm getting absent minded. :)

@justin
Unless by 'assist' you mean his missed shots that end in an Ibaka putback. Cause he's got plenty of those.

@justin
Assists don't figure into the USG formula. TOs do, though. Per 36, RW's averaging 17.0 FGA to KD's 18.2, so I suppose he is shooting slightly less than KD on a per minute basis (FTA is about the same).

If Russ got a decent floater, I would be so happy.

@justin
Hypothetical question. Say we had Deron Williams (fully healthy, etc) on our team for the next 4-5 years. Would we be a better team? I say yes, by a fair amount. That's not to say I'm advocating trading Russ or anything close to that, but I do think if he adapts his game to become more DW-like, we'll be in much better shape to contend for/win championships.

generally a pass first pg isn't your entire offense

Derrick Rose is third in FGA/36 minutes despite playing on a slow paced team. He's not a pass first PG. Deron Williams is someone who I think would fit your definitions better.

@Sammy

No. But many of Russ' possessions (that go into USG) end in an assist, so he's more 'prone' to high usage than Durant is.

Russ needs a big man who can catch a pass in traffic and finish at the rim. Hopefully Serge's hands get better...

@justin

I agree with both your points. Russ' usage was a bit high even when Green was here. I just think losing one of his "go to" guys has made the problem a bit worse. I also agree that the current line-up isn't helping things. I'm hoping it'll get better as Serge continues to improve and we get Harden more playing time with the first unit. Still, it needs to be recognized as a problem. You can't fix it if you don't think it's broke.

I think, before that happens, you need to put teammates around him who can score. Our current starting lineup somewhat encourages Westbrook to behave this way, IMO.

I agree to an extent, but RW plays nearly all his minutes with KD on the floor. Even if they are using up 100% of the possessions, there's still no way RW should have a higher usage than KD.

dream catcher :
a good example of a pass first PG is Rose. He gets everyone involved in the offense, and he can also score whenever he wants. Watch him and how he masterfully pass to all his teammates during a game.

Westbrook passes the ball just as much as Rose does, IMO. The difference is that the Bulls in general move the ball more than the Thunder do. Rose does play more under control and has a better sense for when the team needs him to score / facilitate / etc.

dream catcher :
there are 3 categories of PG to me……..
Combo Guard = can score and pass but looks to score more often, and doesn’t have the natural feel to pass.
Pass First = Rose type, Likes to get his teammates involved throughout the game, and when scoring is needed will score.
Pure PG = Someone who passes all the time, has a great feel for the game, but lacks the scoring ability to take over a game.

You realize Russ has a better assist rate than rose right?

Grolgar :@dream

Well, I generally agree, but sometimes it’s okay for Russ to be aggressive and drive it himself. I’ll agree that he needs to balance his aggressiveness with getting his teammates involved though. He just has to learn to pick his spots…

yep. Once he learns how to keep his teammates involved in the offense we will be an elite team and ready to compete for Championships.

Westbrook is more of a combo guard right now, Maynor is a Pure PG IMO.

@DSMok1
i think his usage should be around 25%

We do not want Russ to be a “pass first,” “pure” point guard. That would be trying to make him something that he is not. He just needs to make better decisions, but his aggressiveness (along with his athleticism) are what make him elite.

Pass first does not = pure PG IMO.

To me a pass first PG is someone who keeps his teammates involved, and when scoring is needed he will score.

A Pure PG is someone who basically passes all the time and doesn't have the natural ability to score like Maynor.

We need Westbrook to have a pass first mindset. We will not win a Championshipw ith him freezing out his teammates every game IMO.

@TaoMaas

Russ' usage was fairly high before the trade, also.

I feel pessimistic about this. I don't think Brooks considers it a problem.

4razr :
Royce, why do you say the bit about Westbrook is odd? Many posters have worried about Russ’s usage, hero mode, blinders, decision-making, and have called on Brooks to reign him in/give him direction. Justin made the point just yesterday, I made it earlier as well, that at least this offseason the offense needs to be re-worked and Russ needs to keep from further developing bad habits. His development could be at the expense of the bigger picture if his bad tendencies now become ingrained habits down the road. He needs to get better at making those around him better.

I'm of the opinion that a pass first PG with solid defense would make this team elite(top3). The problem is Russ does things on his own way to much, and it hurts the teams flow most of the time. It NEEDS to be corrected this off-season.

@DSMok1 Yeah, he probably does take too many shots, but I think that'll change. I get the feeling that KD and Russ are having to learn to play without Green (as well as learning to play WITH Serge and Harden), the same way that Boston is having to adjust to life without Perkins. Neither team seems to have totally sorted everything out just yet.

Nothing riles me up on a Friday like reading a Bucher chat.

I agree with Hollinger that perhaps Westbrook is taking too many shots. Haven't we seen Russ go into "hero mode" when he probably shouldn't?

@dream catcher
I like this idea a lot, hopefully we do it. Division wins should be recognized, but not on the same scale as conference/league championships.

My vote for the coolest time to raise the banner would be the first game of the playoffs. My best guess of when it will happen is during the Bucks game.

Raise the banner at the Milwaukee game. It would give those people who might stay home since we have wrapped up another reason to show up.

maybe 1 banner and put all the years we win the divison on that same banner.

Serge-Ball-U = The Prfessor. nevermind. I will call him Sergeballu from now one, though

I just realized the Spurs have Division banners hanging form their court. sigh I guess we will too.

i would like the organization to raise the division banner, and then inexplicably raise every banner from the sonic era, just to see the reaction from the crowd. The thunder might get sued for starting a riot in seattle.

@doof
you mean "sooner" im pretty certain... :)

dream catcher :
I hope no banner is raised. WE are about Championships, not meaningless division titles. Its not that hard to win a division.

woa, easy there cowboy. let's appreciate the steps as we take them.

As much as I would like to see it, the 2 seed is not gonna happen. We would have to win out, Mavs would have to lose at least 1 game (could happen) and the Lakers would have to lose out. SA will be on cruise control. LA would kill Sacramento by 30 if they had to in that last game. Although, it is likely to be the last game ever in SAC for the Kings.

Tell that to the Clippers.

@Lefty
I hadn't read these rankings before. JH 10th as a SG, not the first time he's been ranked...

Also, the Thunder has been well represented in those rankings. We've had someone in all four positions so far this month. Any chance Perk makes it into the top ten centers?

@justin
He kind of justifies his selection of Ibaka over Millsap in the comment section. Smith isn't eligible because of an injury (he laid out the qualifications for each month at the beginning of the year). I don't know about Boozer. Maybe the guy just doesn't like him?

And Boozer? And Millsap?

I guess you could take Ibaka over Millsap. Dunno about Boozer...

Ibaka over Josh Smith?

Also, Ibaka said himself on twitter a little while ago what his real full name is.

no! Serge Jonas Ibaka Ngobila is full name RT“@kdurant35: @sergeibaka9 is it real??"Sergeballu LaMu Sayonga Loom Walahas Jonas Hugo Ibaka "”

well KD is mvp of the league in my eyes and as a Thunder fan i think thats all the counts. Strangely i perfer Westbrook to arrive at the scene of Stardome, and kinda screw KD's chances a bit of being MVP season in and out, then Westbrook not taking is step. I think KD perfers it too.

Serge ibaka is a top 10 PF now too!! I'm glad im not the only one who thinks that!!!

Rose won MVP lets just give it a rest, James Harden should be in 6th man of the year watch.

The pic in the Serge Ibaka article is hilarious. Pau looks like he is sizing up Dirk for a shower scene later...
