Thunder pulls away late to win No. 50 in Phoenix 116-98

BOX SCORE

Don’t look now, but the Thunder played a fringe playoff contender on the road the way a top-four seed should in taking care of business Wednesday night in Phoenix. One night after nearly letting Golden State steal a game at the end of a long home stand in Oklahoma City, the Thunder slowly put its foot on the neck of the Suns and increased the pressure until it put the game away in the fourth quarter.

OKC kept Phoenix at arm’s length most of the night before pulling away for an eventual 116-98 win in the Valley of the Sun. Until the final frame, the Thunder didn’t really ever threaten to run away with it, but it never quite seemed out of control either. It was a steady stream of three-, five- seven-point leads that occasionally got a little closer. Phoenix took a couple of slim leads. But it always seemed to be a matter of time before Oklahoma City imposed its will, and then before you knew it some chubby guy named Garret Siler who I had never heard of was in the game for the Suns, embodying the white flag raised by Alvin Gentry.

It was definitely a nice change of pace from Tuesday night, when the Thunder played a similar game against Golden State for three quarters but never put the game away. And we all know what happened in the final 13 seconds against the Warriors. But Oklahoma City seemed determined not to let that happen again. Both teams in Phoenix were coming off the front end of back-to-backs, so no team had that go-to excuse, and OKC just played like it wanted to win, perhaps even just to get the bad taste out of its mouth after Tuesday. Whatever it was, the attitude was the one that you’d like to see at this time of year. The Thunder were playing an inferior team on the road, and the game was never in doubt.

Phoenix got the effort that Oklahoma City fans have come to expect from Vince Carter, who played with purpose yet again against the Thunder and finished with 28 points on 11-16 shooting. But other than that, Jared Dudley was the only other Suns player in double figures with 16. Steve Nash was limping a little with his nagging injury and took only four shots. And the rest of the Phoenix roster was just flat-out unimpressive tonight. For a team that still at least has a shot at the last playoff spot, it was kind of a lame effort. They never really gave the crowd a reason to get into it, and so it never did. Only seven fast break points … that’s just not very Suns-like.

The Thunder, on the other hand, got solid efforts across the board. James Harden was aggressive and tied with Kevin Durant for a team-high 22 points. Durant, for his part, shot 8-18 but it felt a little better than that because of the way he scored and when he scored. The step-back jumpers with a hand in his face that he went to a few times tonight are the kinds of shots that sap a defender’s confidence. Three other Oklahoma City players joined them in double-figures and only Nate Robinson, who saw game action for the second time in a Thunder uniform when he entered in garbage time, didn’t score for the good guys. Seeing 22 assists show up on the stat sheet was nice, and seeing three blocks each from Durant and Serge Ibaka was also fun.

All in all, it was as satisfying as a win could be for a game that Oklahoma City should definitely win. Fifty wins with eight games to play!

NOTES

  • Was that Kendrick Perkins’ first dunk with the Thunder when he scored OKC’s third basket on a break in the first quarter? I can’t remember another one, unless it was a putback or something. Perk had six of Oklahoma City’s first 10 points. That probably won’t happen too often.
  • Wow. Steve Nash was dropping some serious F-bombs on the refs when he didn’t get a call in the first quarter. He clearly said, “Eff you, snitch!” or something along those lines. Pretty out of character, right? Either that or I don’t watch enough Phoenix basketball, which is possible.
  • Nick Collison had a pretty major ankle wrap on his left leg when he came off the bench early. Looked like some sort of warm compress that he had to strip off before he got on the court. He must really need to baby that thing to be able to play right now. He was limping ever-so-slightly on the court.
  • Nice stat flashed by the FSO crew in the first quarter: Eric Maynor had 23 assists in the six-game home stand and only two turnovers. That’s just nuts. That really helps OKC keep the turnovers from the point guard position to a reasonable level even though Westbrook leads the NBA in that category. His style is obviously totally different from Westbrook’s, but he’s still incredibly effective in his own way. It’s kind of like in football when the No. 2 running back is the “change of pace guy.” Throwing a different look at the defense really keeps it off balance.
  • Why does Carter play so well against OKC? He had a sick reverse dunk in the second quarter that he created with a nice spin move near the baseline, and I knew what we were in for after that. How often does he really do that anymore? Carter really bothers me for some reason, so it makes it even worse for me that he plays like he does against the Thunder.
  • Ten Thunderers scored by the five-minute mark of the second quarter when Collison got a bucket. That’s the kind of ball-sharing I like to see after a relatively static, if effective, home stand when it comes to ball movement.
  • I really liked the aggressiveness Harden showed. Eight free throw attempts in the first half alone. When he’s getting to the rim, he’s at his best. He got fouled on every two-point attempt he took until the halfway mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Did Marcin Gortat look like even more of a freak show than usual with the broken nose/black eye combo or what?
  • I dig that Collison’s charge taken tonight immediately followed a turnover by him.
  • We all know that Russell Westbrook is fast, but it really seemed like his speed was on display tonight. Being guarded by Nash probably helps that a little … but Westbrook was really knifing into the lane, and was mostly in control. I never get tired of watching that.
  • For once, I think Harden was actually knocked to the floor on a 3-point shot as opposed to falling while trying to sell or create the illusion of a foul. Carter basically threw a forearm into him and knocked him over late in the third quarter on what should have been a shot at a potential four-point play. But Harden didn’t get the call. Maybe his reputation has caught up to him?
  • I thought the Thunder might be in big trouble early in the game when Perkins and Collison caught two quick fouls each in the first half or so of the first quarter. Sure, the Suns play small a lot, but with Cole Aldrich in Tulsa and Byron Mullens in a suit, a couple of Nazr Mohammed fouls soon thereafter could have meant the Thunder had to play long stretches of small ball when it might not want to. But thankfully, it didn’t come back to haunt OKC. Perkins continued to stay in foul trouble throughout the game, but the other guys were able to stay relatively clean and Scott Brooks didn’t have to limit his lineups too much.
  • I would like to take this opportunity to admonish the state of Arizona for not using daylight saving time like most of the rest of America. Arizona is always on Mountain Standard Time, meaning that it’s effectively on Pacific time during DST. So when Oklahoma City plays late-season games in Phoenix, we all have to be a little extra bleary-eyed in the morning. Just one extra night a year of staying up late on a weeknight that we don’t need.
  • Sick block in the fourth quarter by Westbrook on Gortat. Gortat was going up for a layup when Westbrook flew in from behind and pinned the ball against the backboard. I love seeing a guard get up on a center like that.
  • Phoenix tried to employ a Hack-a-Perk technique when they trailed by a lot for the first time late in the game. Perkins nailed the first free throw and missed the next, and the Suns followed it up with a charge on their end before going right back to intentionally fouling Perk. Brian Davis didn’t like it, saying, “Be a man. Play your game.” Perkins sank both free throws on the second trip to the line, Durant responded with a nasty block … and the Suns went right back to fouling Perkins despite the obvious bad karma. Two more made freebies from Perk led to the Suns finally abandoning the tactic. Way to go, Perk!
  • Ken Mauer got mad at Aaron Brooks in the final stages of the game and chucked him, along with Zabian Dowdell. *Shrug.
  • Ibaka has now scored at least 12 points in seven of his last eight games. That is a seriously good sign. He’s showing some nice flashes around the rim and the jumper is falling. He had 15 tonight on 6-13 shooting.

Now the Thunder gets only one day of rest before another big game. The Trail Blazers are going to be hungry for a win, both because of the seeding importance and the Thunder’s win on Sunday. The crowd will be hyped. The playoffs are coming.

Up next: Friday at Portland.

See, here's the deal with Carter. We have a young team, and a lot of our guys don't really realize that he's a lazy, punkarse piece of flung monkey poo, stuck to the wall of apathetic mediocrity. He could have been great. Anyway, the reason he plays out of his head against us is because nobody has "put one on him" yet. If he has another game like that while Perk is still with us, Perk'll drop him if nobody else will. Then he'll be back to being the same little jump-shooting whiner that he is against every other team.

I mean, that's just my opinion. I don't watch much basketball.

Rest him, get Harden reps with those starters

I apologize if this sounds like im trying to prove my street cred, i just want everyone to know that people with no previous interest in Oklahoma sports can be and are smitten with this incrediblly unique and dynamic team and organization. And it seems like each addition, especially with Harden, their appeal just grows stronger.

totally agree .. I havve been a lifelong nba fan .. i was awake as a child watching moe cheeks with his finger raised coming down the forum sideline & dunking euphorically as the sixers won the title in (ahem) 1983 (the only time i ever recall seeing moe dunk actually) ..

but i automatically became a sonics fan when kd was drafted ... & every season, draft, acquisition, it gets better ...

& i LOVE baasketball ... but other teams dont have nearly the fan appeal as okc ... i watch every thunder game, from Philly ...

(i hated bayliss though, had plenty arguments with my homie who had the stance you had ... im thrilled at how that turned out)

i wanted jordan crawford or gordon heyward in last years draft ... but the okc braintrust always gives the feeling that the move they made was the correct one

@kfmsooner
Based on my numbers, Thunder have clinch no worse than a 5 seed The magic number with Portland and New Orleans is 1 and we have the Tie Breaker for both teams.

@Kfmsooner
Totally agree about Rhode's stuff. I hate when Darnell's not the one covering the games

And I am totally up with starting Harden. Not trying to start another big discussion, but I'm in the bunch that says you need to worry about your starters more than your bench.

gr8ball83 :@PNTI would still rather play Spurs second round than Lakers

agreed, i like the way this road seems.

@PNT
I would still rather play Spurs second round than Lakers

@j-mo
We want the 3 seed especially if N.O. gets the 6. We could possibly sweep them and get some rest before round 2

@j-mo
I hope once we are locked into the 4th seed, Brooks lets some guys rest. And that should impact our record as well.

@justin
OK...hard to read sarcasm on a blog...

If my numbers are right, the Thunder have officially clinched a better playoff seed than last year. We can be no lower than the 7th seed. With 1 more win or 1 loss by the Hornets and Blazers, we clinch AT LEAST the 5th seed.

@Royce Young

We'll call it subconscious plagiarism.

@Patrick James

My bad Patrick. I usually check before I read. Good recap.

@kfmsooner

The Amundson thing was a joke. Mid-season last year I compared Ibaka to Amundson as an energy guy. He's obviously made some strides this season. Of course, if he's really 27 instead of 21... :)

If we end the season 5-3 (which is very likely), our record since March 1 will be 19-5. Pretty darn good. If somehow we are able to pull of 6-2 or even 7-1, we'd be 21-3. That'd be insane! I think way more people would hop on the Thunder bandwagon if we hit 56 or 57 wins to end the season. 7-1 is really our only shot to take over the 3 seed, but do we really want to be on the Laker's side of the bracket? Wouldn't payback for last year be best dished out in the WC Finals?

@Daniel
Something was definitely odd with the officials last night.

@justin
Is it just the 2008 playoffs that you are referring to? I looked at Amunson's numbers, and I couldn't find anything that screams "I hope Ibaka can do that some day". He's never averaged 20 mpg, over 5 pts or 5 rbds...

kfmsooner :

justin :Serge is putting up ~16-10-3 in his last five games.

This cannot be understated. Ibaka is a beast. And, I don’t think he has reached his ceiling. justin, do you still think Amundson is his ceiling? I think he can go far beyond that…or was the Amundson thing a joke…

We can only hope that Ibaka can throw up a 33+ PER in the playoffs like Amundson did for the Suns in 2008. I think Ibaka will be more durable than Amundson for sure. His game might get there.

@russokc
It was funny initially. Now give it a rest.

kfmsooner :

PNT :Did anyone see what dowdell did to get kicked out? I know A. Brooks got tossed for grabbing his junk in front of Mauer but I did not see what Dowdell did.

I was sitting in my car waiting on my wife this weekend, when a 50-something year old man came walking thru the parking lot. He was dressed like a gangsta, and he was holding his junk thru his entire walk. At least 2 football fields long, and he never let it go. He couldn’t even walk right because his balance was off with his hand taking care of his stuff…I just don’t understand.

You wouldn't catch B.J. Mullens doing that!

@kfmsooner
I read that Dowdell was complaining about some call when Mauer told him to "stop being a little bitch." Dowdell told him to say it to him after the game outside and then Mauer ejected him.

@kfmsooner
I think there is medicine for that. :)

@lafowler255
Yeah it was awesome. My guess is he told Gentry if they kept it up they were going to start calling intentional fouls, and then they argued about it. really enjoyed it. I wish we could get that officiating crew for our home games.

gr8ball83 :@PNTI dunno but i really really enjoyed the officiating this game. It seemed like it was pretty fair, people got Tech’s for stuff they should get Tech’s for, my favorite part was when one of the refs was telling Gentry to cut it out with the Hack-a-Perk. He was pretty pissed they were wasting everyones time with it, and I loved it.

Thanks for explaining I was STUCK on the phone with my girl while Gentry and the ref were arguing and I couldnt figure out why cause she was ..."graciously".. talking my ear off and inbetween my "Yeahs" and "uhuh's" I couldnt make out what was going on in the game. I need Tivo in my bedroom for moments like this...

My favorite part was B.J's 360 dunk in the 2nd quarter. Wow... he can jump!

@andrew
from what everyone says when it happens to an NFL player its pretty painful, definitely affects performance.

Yep… his role on this team can’t be understated. He is a leader on and off the court, leads the team in rebounds, points and assists and his facial hair is both classy and flattering.
I just hope we have the money to sign him to a long term deal. A lot of teams will be after him though

OH PLEASE…dont get me started on his facial hair as i have forgot to bring and extra pair of pants today, but that aside i would say that he will probably head off to the big lights in some other city as we resign “Michael Westbrook” a greatly improved player.

Yeh his facial hair is pretty sexy. How would you feel about the firing Scott Brooks and the entire coaching staff and have B.J. take on all coaching roles as well as playing 40 mins a night? I suppose we need to give the other teams a chance though right??

@justin

He's doing well - I'm sure B.J. Mullens has shown him a thing or two

I feel like plantar fasciitis is code for "He has been playing horrible and wasn't very good to begin with, so here is the token excuse we will trot out for the next couple years."

This just in: Travis Outlaw has been playing with a severe case of plantar fasciitis all season.

i never worry about vinsanity ... i used to really enjoy him .. but now, i never expect him to keep it going for the whole 48 ... & he was a notch or two below his 1st half level when okc put it away ...

he did that last time, made everything until the clutch, missed a few big shots & it was over ...

oddly enough, i more so worry about him late in a close game when he hasnt had it going ...

Serge is putting up ~16-10-3 in his last five games.

nash definitely said "f--- you ____ go f--- ya self"... i was semi amazed myself ... btw - he was barely fouled on that play, if at all

Anyone else notice this on ESPN’s recap of the game:
“Michael Westbrook added 16, Serge Ibaka 15 and Kendrick Perkins 13 as the Thunder won their fifth in a row, 11th in their last 12 and 50th of the season.”
Who’s Michael??!

perhaps he was talking about B.J. Mullens…….. though i thought he got more than 16 points?

Yeh – good point. BJ had twenty something points I think when I stopped watching midway through the 3rd.
If Mullens can continue to play like this during the playoffs we’re going to be unstoppable!

I AGREE TOTALLY. Mullens is one of the bigs we have been waiting for. Tulsa must be hurting without him. He is a BEAST!! he was even fast enough to change in to a suite before the game was even over. That guy has real class. a true role model for the rest of the team.

The Suns were on edge tonight. They were ALL screaming at the refs the entire night. It's almost like they were so distracted by being mad at the refs that they didn't focus on playing the game. Not to take away from how well the Thunder played but it was a little ridiculous. Every call they acted like somebody just kicked their puppy.

I loved how Russ played tonight. No hero mode. Great ball movement from everyone. KD was good too. Not as many long jumpers, just taking what the defense gave him. Harden was awesome. If only he could play all his games like he does against Phoenix.

Hilarious how they tried the Hack-a-Perk. I was wondering if a team would try it and sure enough, it happened. And Perk said suck on this, nailing 5 of 6! Who knows, maybe this will perk up his free throw shooting the rest of the year.

Fifty wins again! WOO HOO!!!!!!

I'm glad Brooks made it a point to single out RW for praise, thereby encouraging the right kind of bball

* Brooks doesn’t present game balls. If he did, this one probably would have gone to Russell Westbrook (16 points, eight rebounds, three rebounds, two steals), despite having five turnovers. “I thought Russell was really good,” Brooks said. “I thought he showed tremendous leadership. He made the right plays. Defensively, he was active on the ball and guarding one of the best point guards in the game (Steve Nash) and he made it very tough.”

Thabo had plantar fasciitis last season too.

Very wordy explanation there from Rohde on the plantar fasciitis...Leave it to Rohde to write 10 paragraphs about nothing (the team won't talk about 50 wins) and not write 10 words about an injury to a starter...

I hope Thabo is OK. That typ of injury can be nagging. Maybe that's why Thabo's defense and offense have taken a step back. Let's rest him, play Harden and Cook more, and havve everyone healthy and on the same page going into the playoffs.

@Landstander

Yes, i too only followed basketball minimally until KD came into the league. I usually like teams when a college player I like goes somewhere. Im like this with most sports save Michigan State Football and Detroit Lions (im from michigan). Other than those two, i have a hard time rooting for teams if i dont like the players. I never rooted for Tampa Bay until Mike Alstott went there. I like the Pistons but couldnt embrace them fully because i discovered them during the bad boy years and everyone else already liked them, which even as a kid, hopping on a bandwagon did not appeal to me. However, when i saw a picture of KD (while still in highschool) in USA Today or something, he just stuck out to me like a super goofy, super skinny kid with this otherworldy talent and i hoped to god he would come to MSU. I watched Lebron on ESPN while still in Highschool and eventhough he appeared to be everything they made him out to be, he didnt become my favorite player. I was amazed by his skill and willingness to pass, and looked forward to watching evolve as an amazing basketball player. But with KD, I was totally smitten. I started following the soncis, thought Green was a great acquisition after watching his maturity as a college baller. Ill confess, in the draft the following year, i wanted Jarreyd Bayless. He was definately more polished in college than Russ was, but Russ was ky second choice. I did, however buy a RW tshirt in Jan of 09 right after ESPN deemed the Thunder one of the worst teams ever. I wasnt sure during the draft was the right man or not, until i saw his style on draft night. His smile amd goofy demeanor seemed rather apropos to this squad. Things are looking great, im happy to be a fan and to be part of the Thunder ascension with you guys here in this forum. And in that regard, a special thanks Royce McNulty. And, thank you, Sam Presti
