Suns try Hack-a-Perk, Scott Brooks not a fan of the strategy

Trailing by 15 with 4:55 remaining, the Suns were watching the Thunder run away from them in the fourth quarter and with it, maybe taking their playoff hopes with them. Alvin Gentry was desperate and so he busted out a tactic I haven’t seen in a while.

Intentionally foul the other team’s bad free throw shooting big man.

It didn’t really work as Kendrick Perkins made five of six from the line. Scott Brooks said after the game he was fine with their strategy , but it’s not something he would do.

“I’m comfortable with any of our guys shooting free throws,” Brooks told reporters. “We work on it every day. Guys have a lot of confidence, and I have confidence in them. It’s good for us, we’re going to step up and make those shots. They’re free, and it puts a lot of pressure on them because now they have to score.

“You can’t give up free shots; a foul is not a good defense in my book. But that’s not my decision to make, and I like the fact that Perk went up there and knocked them in.”

Perk on the other hand didn’t blame them.

“(Shoot), I would too if I was them,” Perkins told Pro Basketball Talk. “Yeah, the way I’ve been struggling from the line, it’s the best chance for them to get back in the game. But I’ve got to take it upon myself, step up and hit the free throws, and just go from there. I probably would have done the same thing.”

Perk is about a 60 percent free throw shooter but with the Thunder (before last night) was hitting just 36 percent from the line. And he had gone just 2-13 the past few games.

The Thunder are one of the top free throw shooting teams not just in the league, but in league history. Currently, they’re only second at 82.1 percent behind the 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks (82.9 percent). Perkins is obviously hurting them some in that regard.

Question is, could he hurt them even more when the games get more important? Is this a strategy we could see other teams use in the postseason? Probably not because of the rule changes that prevent teams from doing it in the closing minutes of a game, but if OKC is up 10 with four minutes left, would someone dare try it?

Doesn’t matter as long as Perk does what he did last night. Step up and knock them down.

@THE Brian Davis

Perkins is, in my estimation, the greatest clutch free throw shooting big man on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

@Dr. Rumble
yea, that's right...

or just do the "Perk Central" -- like a railroad station

the shirt could have the wording "Welcome to Perk Central" across the top, and the background image would be a basket overhead with a train station underneath (as if arriving at the painted area via train) and then a huge image of Perkins' face scowling right at you on top of the whole thing

Now that "Central Perk" idea would have made a great T-Shirt for Perk. Like you said, maybe we could switch it for infringement rights.
By the way, it truly is amazing how little th Sports Animal guys know about the Thunder and NBA as a whole. Trabor continues to make retarded comments that are proven wrong within days. Listening to them try to talk about the NBA is entertainment at it's finest, haha.

in case you were wondering about how big Perkins is, check this out

Perkins chills next to Shaq

hey, if you can sit next to Shaq and not look like a midget, then you're probably a pretty big boy

the painted area under the basket at OKC arena shall now be known as
The Central Perk

(or should that be Perk Central?)

I rather like Hack-a-Perk... rather catchy

however, if it's altenative you want... how about Fowl-the-Scowl?

If Russ bolts for LA, it'll be after his next contract. We'll have him around for at least four more years.

@DavyTheWise
I was being silly, sorry.

PNT :

james1 :The Sports Animal was just talking about the future of the team and more specifically Russell Westbrook. Mark Rogers said he thought he’d be a Laker within a few years to be closer to his family. I know he is VERY close to his family and honestly wouldn’t be super surprised if that happened. Any thoughts on this?

If you want Thunder info, The Sports Animal would be one of the last places I would turn.

Not listening for Thunder info. Listening because it's entertaining. Thunder discussion comes out every once in awhile and I know they aren't a great source but it is Thunder discussion which is more than I would be hearing if I was listening to music.

haha!!

justin :@james1
I think he will be extended this summer, if collective bargaining permits. If he ends up in LA, I think it’ll be after his second contract at the earliest.

I think that's right. It's hard to imagine that at this point and there is still enough time before his second contract runs out for us to peak and see if this team has what it takes to win a championship or two. Just thought I'd see what the board thought.

awesome

..and he immediately starts following all the Thunder players

@justin
Any gimmick strategy when down double digits doesn't make a lot of sense. The Suns could neither score nor defend in the 4th. Defensively, two Perks free throws were better than the alternative, but offensively they still weren't going anywhere.

As you said, I think the best use of a hack strategy would come in a close game or even when we have the lead and are struggling defensively.

Haha, not sure if you guys will find this as funny as I did, but check this out:

hey, MIchael Westbrook might abandon us for the Lakers... but RUSSELL would never do that!

I think this qualifies as an immediate ban from this board

Now that Perk is on the Thunder, he'll soon start shooting 80% at the FT line

it is the Tao of the Thunder, and the ways of the Thunder shall soon fill Perkins body and soul

8)

I don't think it's a good strategy if you're down double digits. I think it's stupid in that situation. If it's a close game down the wire, and you're confident in your offense, I think it can be useful. Especially sicne if the guy misses you can get him off the court.

If Perk downs his FT's like he did last night, then I'm a BIG FAN of the Hack-A-Perk strategy!

If you have sensitive eyes, close the drapes!

THE Brian Davis :
BE A MAN, PLAY YOUR GAME!!

Is this a new thing?

Valid strategy, kind of surprised more teams don't utilize it. Although, it really seems like a BS rule to allow it. The team fouls a player without the ball who is not involved in the play. If anything, it should be two free throws plus the ball. It's should be a flagrant (unnecessary contact with a player since that player is not in the play or holding the ball), or at best a dead ball foul (the player is being fouled away from the play with no intention of defending the actual play).

@THE Brian Davis
That was classic.

I think somebody just needs to piss the big guy off. It worked last night. He nailed them.

BE A MAN, PLAY YOUR GAME!!
