Perk says Phil Jackson is arrogant, Pau Gasol soft

Most everyone said it when the Thunder acquired Kendrick Perkins. He’s going to bring something different to town. He’s tough, he’s big, he’s physical and he’s not shy about speaking his mind. If Chris Bosh is a fake tough guy, Perkins is every bit of real tough guy as you can get. And in a locker room that’s mostly tight-lipped with every cliche down pat and ready to use in any situation, Perkins has a candidness that we haven’t really ever seen here.

In the newest issue of ESPN the Mag, Perkins and Kevin Durant were both asked a couple of the same questions with both having mostly differing opinions. All of it was pretty interesting, but the question, “Lakers: Team to beat or old news?” brought out the best in Perk.

“Yesterday’s news,” he said. “I don’t like Pau Gasol or Phil Jackson. Phil is arrogant. Pau is soft. Kobe tries to bring out his toughness, but he’s still soft.”

Well then.

Durant’s answer? “They’re the reigning champs and still playing like it.” See the difference there? Like I said, Perk might take a little getting used to. I actually wondered to myself if these quotes were even real or if I was missing the point of some kind of fictional, made up quote piece.

Other interesting answers:

Should Kendrick ease up on the technicals?

KD: “No. I love it. Off the court he’s a big teddy bear, but we need that fire and flair on the court.”

Perk: “Nope. That’s the way I am, and I can’t change. I think it motivates my team.”

James Harden’s beard: Go clean or keep growin’?

KD: “Oh keep on growing, for sure! If he cuts it, I don’t think he’ll get any ladies.”

Perk: “Keep on growing it. It’s brings out that cocky, California look in him. Don’t stop now.”

Call of Duty or NBA 2K11?

KD: “Call of Duty. It’s more of a challenge for me. 2K is too easy. Virtual KD is pretty good, know what I mean?”

Perk: “I gotta go with 2K because I’m in it. How many games can you say that about?”

OKC is ideal or Seattle got robbed?

KD: “Man, you’re putting me in a tough position. I’ll say both.”

Perk: “The move was for the best. Not taking anything away from Seattle, but it’s better for the NBA and better for Oklahoma City.”

Perk is getting some time tonite

http://newsok.com/kendrick-perkins-to-make-debut-with-okc-thunder-tonight/article/3548741?custom_click=headlines_widget

Would like to see Perk get some minutes in tonite, maybe in the 3ed, just so he can get a feel for the team in action before they go against Heat.

Man, shows how off base I am, I was thinking it was a play on the rapper Royce da 5'9"s name. Would love to see Perk get a game with the team before we play the Heat. Would also love to see him deck Chris Bosh, get a flagrant, followed by a tech for calling him a fake tough guy while he's on the ground.

So nothing on Perk? The anticipation of a debut is too much to bear.

Jax Raging Bile Duct :
So there were 68 other Royce’s on ESPN first. What’s the big deal?

Nah, I'm just a big Jared Allen fan.

But seriously I don't remember my reasoning for picking that. I did it like five years ago.

wow, really nice piece at WTLC

Pretty sure that you guys read it wrong, Perk never called Kobe out. If anything he was complimenting Kobe by saying the he tried to bring the toughness out of Gasol, but Gasol was still soft… not Kobe.

Heh.. Good Bobby jab, there. Also, I agree with you. I love Perk’s candor and honesty. Let’s be real– Phil Jackson is indeed arrogant, and Pau Gasol is indeed soft. Now, I love KD and our boys’ sweet personalities and attitudes and don’t ever want to see them change, but we needed a guy like Perk. A tough, say what he’s thinking, take no crap from anybody kind of guy. KD’s and Perk’s answers were completely different, but I loved them both.

you're right. Makes sense now...

Rich Levine had another funny tweet, this one about the Celtics-Bucks game last night:

"The Celtics are honoring St. Patty's Day tonight with green and gold jerseys. The Bucks, by playing like they're drunk."

I'm a little late for my word play joke, since the Cavs game was yesterday, but...

Anyone know Perk's status for tonight?

The NBA.com top ten for yesterday was weak, I can't believe RW's dunk wasn't in it.

f5alcon :@Joel

if he gets his tickets that would be awesome of the thunder org

You know, I think he'll get them.. just a feeling. Presti will come through!

@Joel

Daniel wanting his tickets badly! He asks Darnell how to get them in the mailbag!

"Hey, just wanted to ask a question. How do I get in touch with Sam Presti? He owes me some tickets! Haha. I went to the ATL/OKC game last Friday and randomly, sitting at the top of my seating section about an hour before tipoff was Sam Presti talking on the phone. I waited a few minutes for him to get off his call and went up and introduced myself. We talked for about 10 minutes and at the end of the conversation I mentioned that the Thunder were 2-0 when I saw them play live in ATL. He then responded by saying that if they won that night he’d buy my tickets next year! They won, now I want my tickets! Just kidding. But seriously, he was a great guy. After “getting to know him” for 10 minutes I definitely like the fact that he runs my favorite NBA organization. He’s a smart, down to earth, nice guy. I think he was shocked to be recognized in ATL too. Anyways, just wanted to share that. – Daniel R.

Don’t give up so easily. Fight for your tickets, man. Flood somebody’s email at Thunder headquarters. Get what’s yours! Seriously, Presti has done a great job in the shaping of this roster and in creating a certain culture for this team. I remember sitting at a bar in OKC talking to a few holdover Hornets fans when the Thunder first got to town. They were telling me how impressed they were with former Hornets GM Jeff Bower and were sad to see him go. I told them then that they’d be 10 times more impressed with Presti. Knowing what I know now, I sold him short."

@andrew
Gasol is no doubt an outstanding player, but I think Perk is just saying that he's not very physical. He's soft in that he is more of a finesse PF than a strong PF. I don't think you can apply that to KD because KD isn't playing a position that requires him to be overpowering, and that's not supposed to be his game.

@sas
yeah rss would probably work better

^F5alcon I find that either rss'ing it or following Royce on twitter works. He's usually quick to tweet new posts.

@Joel
lol, well then i have to leave twitter up, i dont have a newish phone, still on win mobile 6.1

It's called twitter! :)

Any criteria that is being used to call Pau soft would probably say the same about KD.

I actually don't think Pau is "soft." He went against KG and won the finals for the Lakers last year...

That was my fault. It was supposed to go up tomorrow, not today.

@kfmsooner
I was wondering the same thing. A co-worker said Bobby Thompson is saying he thinks Perk will play tonight, but last I heard he was still looking to debut against the Heat.
It's entirely possible Bobby was just agreeing with something someone else said. ;)

I love this Q&A! Perk is definitely a different personality than we're used to from the Thunder, but it's a welcome change to me.
The stuff Perk said would be jarring coming from KD because that's not the type of guy he is. It makes perfect sense coming from Perk. He's a tough dude - not necessarily a mean dude, but he's not the sugar coating type of guy. It makes for interesting interviews off the court and a much needed tough guy on it.
I can't wait to see him in action!

dream catcher :Kobe is a killer, you don’t want to piss of a stone cold killer.

Really? I prefer to play against kobe when he's ticked off, because thats when he tries to go into MJ mode and starts going 1 on 1 and ignores his teammates.

I wish Perk would have called Pau a "fake tough guy." My life would have been complete.

This is somewhat off-topic, but Perk's comments reminded me of "The Fab 5" on ESPN's "30 for 30" series. Did any of you watch it and see what The Fab 5 had to say about Duke's players? Perk's comments are pretty tame in comparison. lol

innocent bystander :Pau sure looks orange in that pic

His jersey got one of those spray tans. I think everything in L.A. is required by law to get one.

well, thank goodness that at this site we can at least be spared from having to read about those damn brackets

Kobe is washed up. Isn’t he 40 already?

he's 67, in NBA years

Who won the scoring title last year again??? (Might I add without all-stars playing at the 4 & 5) Come on, man. Kobe was the man 10 years ago. This is 2011. Can we freshen up a bit?

Kobe is washed up. Isn't he 40 already?

wow, a lot of posts today -- and we haven't even gotten to the pre-game yet

Kobe is a killer, you don't want to piss of a stone cold killer.

there goes our chances of containing Kobe if we meet in the playoffs. No doubt he gets a hold of that quote.
