Monday Bolts – 3.21.11

Ken Berger on KD’s MVP hopes: “Durant keeps downplaying his own and the Thunder’s success, but the arrival of a legit center in Kendrick Perkins means Oklahoma City is ready to compete with the heavy hitters. If Durant didn’t think he was MVP material before, he will be now if the Thunder finish as strong as I think they will.”

Shoals for ESPN.com on the least significant free agents: “Especially after Wednesday night’s win over the Miami Heat, no team’s rise is as eagerly anticipated as that of the young, fresh, and oh-so-chummy Oklahoma City Thunder. With all due respect to Cook, who once won the 3-point contest (which could be considered more of a career-killer than a badge of honor), he might be left by the side of the road. Russell Westbrook deserves an extension; Kendrick Perkins needs to be worked into the team. Serge Ibaka and James Harden are growing up fast. General manager Sam Presti must hoard more talent. We hope Cook knows that self-worth begins within, and no one can take that from him.”

The Thunder has one of the best benches in basketball.

Perk on missing those late free throws: “When you end a two-point game like that, you can go through the game and pick out little details where you messed up. I’m talking about me personally,” Perkins said. “It’s one of those games where you just have to look yourself in the mirror and come back and be prepared to go against the Jazz for the next game (Wednesday). It was a tough loss. I obviously have to be better in certain situations. I think we can be better as a team, and me personally, I can be better.”

Darnell Mayberry: “This would have been the perfect game for Nate Robinson. Outside of the first six minutes, and James Harden’s efforts in the first half, the Thunder couldn’t get much of anything going offensively all night. Robinson is the perfect spark plug in these situations. He can ignite the crowd and pump life into his teammates. Gonna be interesting to see how much Brooks uses him in these scenarios in the stretch run and the postseason.”

A little Thunder comic strip featuring Perk and the Kool-Aid guy.

Raptors Republic: “The Thunder attack was countered with excellent man-to-man defense on their main weapon, Kevin Durant, by James Johnson who did not concede an inch and didn’t show any respect whatsoever to the superstar. His drives were sealed off without the need of extra help, his attack angles were taken away at the perimeter and he was kept outside the paint for the most part.”

NBA.com power rankings: “Sunday’s loss to the Raptors isn’t easy to explain, but the Thunder defense has picked up considerably over the last five games. They’ve held their opponents to 40 percent shooting and 91.2 points per 100 possessions in that stretch. And yes, Kendrick Perkins probably has something to do with it.”

ESPN.com’s rankings: “You can safely assume that the Thunder didn’t expect to start 9-1 in March with Perk playing in only three of those games. Just as they never expect to lose at home to the Raps no matter who is or isn’t playing.”

Cooks self-worth from within doesnt pay the bills. If he hadnt noticed his stock is on the rise.

stmczell :
Honestly I was a little disappointed in the remark that Cook’s “self-worth begins within” and the likelihood of him being “left by the side of the road.” Numerous times in the last month or so Cook has made bigtime 3s for the Thunder. Maybe it is just me but I have found his contributions of late as a little more than serviceable. Considering he is our best 3-ball shooter–hell, our only 3-ball shooter outside of KD and Harden–it seems a little harsh to leave him by the side of the road. Personally I would like to see him stick around if he comes cheap.

agreed Cook went from that dude who you didn't care about, to that dude you actually hope gets checked into the game at some point. I doubt Marc Stein has all the time in the world to watch replays of our games, but maybe he should watch one or two more before he makes an assumption like that. I hope Cook reads that and goes "f this dude" and plays phenomenal for the next few games.

Shit, sorry about double post. Typing from my phone

Good, ESPN finally taking notice of D Roses drop off. I thought there was no end to that tune

Zero Blocks?!?!? How is this possible?

At least we disnt lose to cleveland like the former finals participants, and stein and hollinger still have them both above us. Unfortunate loss, nevertheless. Hopefully theyll learn to tqke non playoff teaka more.seriously.

Man, i want to see the bulls tank the rest of the way, or if not, we get to crush them in the finals

@dragonbug82

Most Raptor fans are actually still very complimentary of the Thunder and know the Thunder fell victim of the "trap game". Here's one example from a Raptors fans commenting on another fan who said that this loss shows RW and KD's immaturity, "Not sure if it was a sign of immaturity. The NBA season is an absolute marathon, and it's difficult to continually stay focused for 6 months of regular season basketball.
Even the greatest team of all time (the '96 Bulls) lost 10 games...one of which was to the 16-66 Raptors."

@kfmsooner

Agreed. 10 man rotation is hard enough to sustain.

@f5aclon

I guess Amir is a wuss too! Damn Canadiens, eh??!!

@kreese29
I don't see how we can have an 11 man rotation.

@kreese29
not much, not in the rotation, maybe in blowouts

@dragonbug82
well considering perk got a tech drawn on amir johnson does that mean he is a pussy too?

this line really bothered me from the raptors blog
"A ear-to-ear smile appeared on my face when Reggie Evans drew an offensive foul on ex-C**tic Kendrick Perkins and then frustrated the giant pussy into a technical"

really? perk a pussy lol. right. and man they are high on the win over there. They are sounding like they just downed the best team in the league with superior skills. When it was clear to me that we just missed shots and other factors.

When Nate gets Back do you think he will play?

@Grolgar
start of april at the earliest, prob will be available for playoffs

When is Nate Robinson supposed to be able to play again?

dream catcher :I like that quote by Perk, He is a real leader.

I love Kendrick Perkins.

@Patrick James

Just because it's an interesting question and made me reflect...

Four 1st round exits
Four 2nd round exits
One Conference Finals exit
One Finals exit

That's Dirk's current playoff resume (including the first round exit in the 1 v 8 matchup when he was MVP.) I would say that's borderline for me. I guess it remains to be seen how Dirk will finish his career, but if Durant's resume looks similar in the end, I think I'll be alright with it, even if it'll be a little bittersweet.

Every fan wants their team to win a championship. I'm sure Jazz fans, Knicks fans, Bills fans, etc all view their almosts as bittersweet too.

For me, Durant choosing to stay in OKC for a long career will make up for a lot of the disappointment should we not win a title while he's here. That said, I don't think it will be a problem :)

@cdub00
if we play the nugs i want homecourt, denver is a tough arena(7 home losses) and that is the most likely scenario.

And that comic strip is so-so, but the commentary following it is a pretty good read and I have to say I agree with the author's main point. If you haven't read it, I recommend it.

f5alcon :@cdub00we really need to beat utah for tiebreaker for division reasons

Yeah, who do you want to see in the first round? I say the Nugs.

@cdub00
we really need to beat utah for tiebreaker for division reasons

@f5alcon
I think we should compare to someone besides Denver, I don't think Melo has what it takes to lead a contender, so I would be really disappointed if we have the same results they had.

After last night, I hope the team wakes up and plays the way they did in the 4th against Toronto for the entire game against UTAH. We can't afford two BAD losses in a row!! Thunder UP!!

I like that quote by Perk, He is a real leader.

@kfmsooner
i agree but if we went to 2nd rd most years and a few conference finals or even losing an nba finals, i think i would be satisfied, winning a title requires luck.

Patrick James :@kfmsooner@Justin
Sort of related to our previous conversation: What would it take for you guys to consider the Durant era a success for the Thunder? While I don’t think it’s anywhere near our ceiling, I think one title would be enough for me to say it was all worth it — the investment in time, money for my season tickets, etc. Reason I say only one is just because it’s so damn hard to win even one. What’s the stat, seven teams since the late 1970s or something? I mean I WANT more, but I’d just be satisfied with one. Just curious what you guys think too.

The fact that we have a winning pro team in a city that is still learning to harness it is amazing. Your right, some teams have looked like they should be handed the trophy since the start of the season yet end up losing. It takes a special bunch to just win one, and thats what we're trying to do!

@f5alcon
If we had a Denver with Melo type of run, I would see that as a disappointment.

@Patrick James
One title would be good for me along with some consistent winning. If you assume that they resigh JH and SI (big assumption), I'd be happy with one title, but I think we could win more. I would not be happy with one title and not making the playoffs for several years. One title, a couple of deep, competitive runs. I'd be happy. It's tough to win one, that's for sure. I'm an OU fan, not one of the crazy ones, and you can see that winning it all is very, very tough...

Buuuuttttt...I think the potential for this team is great.

@Patrick James
i dont even think it is that high, if we make the playoffs 7/10 years with a few 2nd rds and conference finals, that should be, denver only made it out of the 1st rd once in melo era, i doubt many of their fans ever saw it as not worth their effort.

@kfmsooner@Justin

Stein really made the Thunder pay in his rankings for the loss to Toronto. A double digit win at Miami and he has us three spots below?

hopefully toronto continues their win streak and beats denver tonight

Durant will have a tough time winning MVP. Since the trade:

24.5 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.3 spg, 1.9 turns/g, 44.3% FG, 44.3% 3pt FG%

His turns are awesome right now, especially compared to past seasons. 1.56 a/t ratio is the best of KD's career, and the 3pt % is fantastic. But these are not MVP numbers. KD needs a few 40 point games to get his swagger back...

Perk will play against his friend Big AL and Ibaka must guard Millsap.It is tough for them.
