Friday Bolts – 3.4.11

Nate Robinson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out 4-6 weeks. The team said he experienced discomfort after his first practice Monday and decided to go ahead and do it, especially since it was obvious he wasn’t going to be a major part of the rotation.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com on free agency: “Perhaps the most intriguing part of the outcome to many teams and agents was that Durant did not want an option at the end of the deal to get out early. These options are virtually standard for any player getting more than a three-year deal. Durant could have requested, and almost certainly received, a chance to opt out of the new deal after four years.”

Nazr Mohammed on the difference between him and Ibaka: “I’m not athletic. Don’t put me in that bunch. I have average athleticism. He’s an athlete. I’m decent. I’m fast enough, but not fast.”

John Schuhmann of NBA.com on the difference of Perkins: “No trade was more shocking than the deal that sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to Oklahoma City for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic. By moving Perkins, the Celtics seemingly compromised exactly what has made them so great over the last 3 ½ years. Their success has been built on an unyielding defense that has been its strongest on the interior.”

The Celtics haven’t offered Jeff Green a contract yet, so what’s his future there?

Speaking of, the Celtics can’t figure out how to use him either: “What we’re trying to do, as a staff, is watch a ton of film,” Rivers said. “We’re trying to figure out what [all of Boston's new players, including (Jeff) Green] can do well, then we’re trying to put that in our offense and try to run it that way. It’s going to be difficult, it’s going to be tough, but we’re going to get it done.”

Thabo held a nice event: “An Oscar Night party organized by Sefolosha and his wife, Bertille, included about 200 guests, who came from as far away as Switzerland to raise money to help children in South Africa. The $50,000 the event raised and the links formed illustrate a broader perspective that the Oklahoma City Thunder has helped bring to the community since the team’s arrival in 2008. Thabo and Bertille Sefolosha organized “A Night for Africa” along with hosts Tina and Stephen Dobson, who opened their Gaillardia home for the event.”

This whole situation with the Kings is pretty interesting for people that sit in Oklahoma City, I think.

Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose and Kevin Love worked out together over the summer and SI’s Lee Jenkins writes about that impact: “They worked out six days a week at St. Monica, (Rob) McClanaghan putting them through full-court and half-court game simulations, peppering them with hypothetical questions: “How good do you want to be? You want to be an All-Star? You want to be an MVP? You want to be a champion, or lose in the conference finals?” McClanaghan’s assistant was a 3-foot black football pad he used to punish the players so they would not forget what it feels like to rush into a power forward.”

@justin

Denver is definitely not looking at an immediate long-term tear down. I was waiting to see what they ended up with and I think they did better than I expected from a win games perspective. From a win a title perspective, it might not be as good. The danger of being a low playoff seed could compound and make the deal look worse in a few years but that when depend on what they do from here too.

I think Denver's better than they are being given credit for here. I still think we take the division though, our schedule is more favorable.

@Keith

"They would match any offer, even above what they are truly willing to pay Russ, just to use him in a trade later."

Yes that would be plan B and it would take extreme unwillingness to accept financial "burden" to decide to let Westbrook go for "free", though you could then pursue free agents at price levels more to your liking. But if you had that unwillingness you might deal him before that summer. Green and Westbrook are different cases but the degree of willingness to accept a large team salary in the future is still yet fully demonstrated.

@Daniel Hawaii
I don't think you should compare KD to Chris Paul Pierce, we don't want any of that on our team... Bring out the wheel chair!! OK I'm good now.

@Crow
I think Russ is playing too close to max for minute changes to be enough of a factor to let him go. Let's say we have to pay him his full first year salary up front. It may not be preferable, but the ownership certainly has the money to do so. Let's say someone throws in incentives to completely max out the contract (I think it's 120% base, but it may not actually be available to max contract players). Is that going to be enough to let him walk for nothing? Certainly not.

I think the main issue with it all is not what Russ is worth, or even how a contract can be structured. The main issue is that the team WILL NOT lose him for nothing (heck, they turned Green and Krstic into Perkins). They would match any offer, even above what they are truly willing to pay Russ, just to use him in a trade later. And make no mistake, even at the max, Russ would be a hot commodity.

I think Durant plays. All signs were pointing to it. He was joking after the last game, saying he was "out for the season." If you're really hurt, you're not saying that.

There was no swelling. He was walking with only a slight limp yesterday. He participated in the full shootaround this morning. I think he's fine.

Plus, remember when Chris Paul turned an ankle against us in the last NO/OKC game? He came back the next QUARTER! Sometimes, an ankle roll just isn't as bad as it looks.

I trust our medical team and if they clear him for the game, I am absolutely fine with him playing.

@okc baby
okc record against playoff teams: 18-16, denver: 16-18

@f5alcon

re: durant playing. thats awesome if he does. do you think he will play? I thought maybe they were saying game time so hawks would still worry about/game plan for him

@PNT
I almost wish I was friends with him so I could win some money on some bets with him....

@gr8ball83
I think he is and I doubt he'll find anyone here that will agree with him.

@okc baby
You're saying we are set up for a first round knock out??

Exactly they can overtake us. We sat comfortably. When we havent won the games against the good teams. We are in this position because of the change going on. Utah and Denver losing their best players. Set up for another first round knock out

@Keith

If you are willing to pay whatever it takes then yeah you can't lose Russ as a RFA. But if the pay level and structure is really objectionable you could theoretically decide to pass.

I haven't really sat down and asked how much is too much for Russ but I leave open the possibility that there might be such a level and structure possible from an opposing bidder.

@okc baby
even if we lose those 3 we are still ahead by 1 in the lose column. Is it possible denver passes us, yes, but it isnt likely with the remaining schedule and if we win 1 game against them we will probably have division tiebreaker unless portland,utah and the wolves all beat us.

@okc baby
The point is we are ahead and have an easier closing schedule. Why would you assume a less talented team (Denver) is going to overcome a standings deficit to a more talented team (OKC) when the more talented team plays an easier schedule? You're talking in circles. Anything COULD happen, but your scenario of Denver winning more games than us down the stretch is considerably less likely than the alternative.

@f5alcon
And we could lose tonight,Phoenix and Memphis if Perk isnt ready. your point is

@Thunder405
I think we've looked like a stronger defensive team since the Laker game. Orlando pretty much handled us, but the majority of that was Dwight (obviously we had no depth or vet centers to play). I hate to say it, but just like the 2nd team defense tended to give us leads, we've looked better defensively almost immediately after removing Jeff Green.

@Thunder405
It was a combination of Pacers shooting like garbage and being better inside on D.

@okc baby
and denver could lose in 2 weeks to atl, orl, miami and SA the next week

Do you guys think we looked like a stonger defensive team against the Pacers or was it their bad shooting? I think we're much stonger in the middle with a true center. Guess we'll find out tonight. Thoughts?

And even if Durant doesn't play tonight, I think we're 7-2 all time without Durant in the game.

@Crow
Less than full max can only be frontloaded up to the max. Further, a frontloaded contract won't be as valuable through it's life as a max contract. I would be more than happy with Russ taking a frontloaded (starting at the max) contract that goes down from the max each year. It's very likely less (over the course of the contract) than we are going to offer ourselves. Not to mention, his contract going down each year would only help with re-signing Harden and Ibaka.

There's no realistic way Russ can get to another team in his RFA year. We may be willing to pay the max (especially in a new CBA that is likely to have lower salaries), and there's nothing more than the max.

We really shouldn't be worried about nuggets. Even if they managed to overtake us in the standings(unlikely), there's no reason to think they could beat a healthy thunder team in a 7 game series.

@Heysloth
The thing is, people do post some interesting facts when arguing okc baby. It may not matter to him, but I enjoy the well researched portions of the argument.

@Keith

You are right that a full max is hard to frontload because of salary and raise limits. I'll have to review the rules regarding signing bonuses though. You can of course pay up to 100% of salary before the start of a season and that is more annoying or challenging to some teams than others. A less than full max can probably be frontloaded more than a full max situation.

@okc baby
Denver really isn't as good as their recent play suggests. They simply aren't a very talented team anymore and this rah rah enthusiasm they have to prove Melo wrong won't last forever. Even running through their recent wins doesn't prove much. The beat Memphis (and up and down team all year). The beat the Celtics (depleted on trade day). They lost to the Blazers (2-3 since ASG). The beat Atlanta only after Smith got hurt before halftime (losing to that point). The beat the now D-league caliber Bobcats. They beat the undermanned and already underwhelming Jazz post Deron.

Those 4 games in the loss column might as well be a 400 foot wall the Nuggets have to climb given our respective closing schedules.

@Heysloth
LOL...Some take this stuff seriously. This blog is the longest I have held onto a blog. I've been to OU blogs, OKC Hornets blogs, and others, but I always give up on them due the idiotic banter over nothing.

@Heysloth
nope, keep arguing!

@kfmsooner

I am really smart about basketball and no one else knows nothing!!!
Did I win the internet?

@f5alcon
Here's how you figure games back:

Take the W-L record and see how many games above .500 both teams are. Subtract the higher number from the lower number and divide by half. For example:

OKC 37-22, 15 games over .500
Denver 37-26, 11 games over .500

15 - 11 = 4
4 / 2 = 2
Thuder are 2 games ahead of Denver.

If a team is below .500, you do the same, but the games 'over .500' is a negative number:

San Antonio 50-11, 39 games over .500 (+39)
Minnesota 15-47, 32 games under .500 (-32)
39 - (-32) = 71
71 / 2 = 35.5
Minnesota is 35.5 games out of 1st place.

@okc baby
I would bet that we will have a better record the rest of the year than the teams below us in the standings.

I think Kevin will play tonight but even if he doesn't I think we have a winning record when he's out? We'll be fine. Our next 10 look pretty good and Denver should be playing around 500 ball over their next 10.

Westbrook has to have a monster game. Unlikely, hasnt happen in awhile. Wheres are offense coming from? Thabo?

So that cushion people were talking about is not there anymore.

@okc baby
I wouldn't say we would most likely lose

@f5alcon
True. But, as the Pistons found out, Gordon was never worth as much as he thought he was.

I read that Josh Smith is out tonight. That helps us, regardless of if KD lays.

Moral of the story we could most likely lose tonight and Denver can definitely take out the Clippers tomorrow the way they are playing inspired ball.

@kfmsooner
Well said. I was just about to login and say the same things myself. One of the great differences between DT and most other forums is that there is little to zero flaming or hateful arguments and name calling. Let's keep it cool, guys. Disagreeing or having healthy debates is fun, but having to read through a bunch of hateful posts to get to good Thunder talk is not.

Hawks blog talking about Russ's triple double from the last time they played...

http://hawksbasketblog.com/2011/03/04/hawks-eager-...

@Keith
the only player who i can think of who did that is ben gordon and he was really unhappy in chicago.

@Keith

@f5alcon
Right. Duh. #winner

okc baby :@f5alcongame and a half if you want to be specific. Point is we dont of the cushion people were sitting so comfortably at. When i mentioned the silver lining which is teams were going through changes.

Games back is irrelevant unless you have played the same number of games. Look at the loss column. They have the same wins and four more losses, hence they have played four more games than we do. That means the ball is in our court. We have more opportunities to win than they do by reason of having four more games to play.

Please don't flame individuals. I don't agree with okc baby, but I don't call him names. Agree, disagree, but if we start calling people idiots, the board goes to hell and we get 104 posts in a row about people's mamas, GPAs, Bob Stoops pizza delivery guy is my friend, etc. Please stop.

I hardly ever comment. But, one certain new poster is driving me insane. I know I can't be alone.

@Lefty
westbrook is an RFA we can match anything

@Lefty
Impossible. As he is a RFA, we have the right to match any offer another team makes. If he thinks to sign for less somewhere else, it only helps us more as it costs less to match the offer. The only leverage he has would be to play out a qualifying offer (still less than the max) for the 2012-2013 year. So two more years, bare minimum, he would have to give up millions in 2012 as well as long term security, and we would still be able to trade him in his qualifying offer year.

There is a reason RFAs almost never change teams.

@CenOK
Well you need to stick with Chemistry then

@okc baby
we actually have a 4 game lead in the lose column, so unless we lose 4 more games than them by the end of the year it will balance out as we play the bad teams left on our schedule. they have a much tougher schedule than we do.

@CenOK
Isn't berating someone just as bad as them talking basketball nonsense, worse even? I don't agree with a lot of what okc baby says, but he does (or maybe has) seem like a fan, and has had some reasonable discussions in the past. Why everyone is jumping on him and bothering to call him out is just odd. If he's wrong, he's wrong, someone tends to correct him in that case and I think most fans are knowledgeable enough to see it before any explanation is made.
