Thursday Bolts – 2.3.11

Shaun Powell of NBA.com making an MVP case for KD: “The mission for Durant is to make sure he takes the Thunder with him as he keeps soaring. January was shaky as the Thunder went 7-6, with two wins coming in overtime when the Thunder were pushed to the brink by Minnesota and the Wizards, and another win on Durant’s buzzer-beater. The losses came against Miami, San Antonio, the Lakers, Nuggets and Hornets, the kind of company you must beat in order to send a message in time for the postseason.”

I’ve noticed this same thing that Darnell Mayberry points out and it drives me crazy: “For the life of me, I can’t understand why James Harden jumps several times after his 3-point tries. The only thing I can think of is he’s not shooting with any confidence. It looks as though he’s willing the ball into the basket — and it never works. Somebody needs to pull him aside and tell him to take a shot with confidence. Jump once. Follow through. And trust your skills. Go back and watch the tape on this one. When Harden does trusts his stroke (watch his 3 w/ about six minutes left in the third), his shots go in. When he doesn’t (twice in the first half), they miss badly.”

I love this Blake Griffin dunk not for the actual slam, but because of Bill Simmons’ awesome reaction.

Jenni Carlson doing her thing about CP3′s flopping: “Now, he’s a royal pain. He’s a bad guy. He’s a black-cape-wearing, mustache-twisting, evil-cackling villain. Right before halftime Wednesday night, Paul drew a foul on Russell Westbrook. The point guards were going after a loose ball, and when they collided, Paul reacted like he’d been hit with a windmill punch. A fan behind the scorer’s table yelled, “And the Oscar goes to … ” Another answered, “Paul!” It was vintage CP3. It gave him an advantage, stole a couple points and miffed everyone in Thunder blue. He knows how to get under opponents’ skin. “He’s good,” Williams said. “That’s enough.” Enough to drive people crazy. Enough to brand him a punk. But Oklahoma City, you know the truth. Paul might be a pest and a pain, but he is no punk.”

From Elias: Kevin Durant made 14 of 19 field-goal attempts (including five three-pointers) and 10 of 11 free throws to accumulate 43 points as the Thunder beat the Hornets. Durant was the second NBA player this season to score as many as 43 points in a game in which he took fewer than 20 shots from the floor. Kevin Martin had only 18 field-goal attempts in his 45-point game on January 5. The only other player in SuperSonics/Thunder franchise history to score at least 43 points in a game in which he took fewer than 20 shots from the floor was Rashard Lewis on Jan. 11, 2006 (45 points and 18 FGA).

Hornets 24/7: “Anyways, considering the Hornets were without Okafor and lost Ariza halfway through the game, they were in that thing a lot longer than they should have been. The Thunder were raining shots from long range – typically the kinds of looks the Hornets wanted. They were not getting much of anything at the basket until Ibaka started ripping down offensive rebounds in the second half. Considering the Thunder started raining jumpers in that half, it hurt that when they did miss we had trouble ending the possession.”

KD was the Daily Dime’s best last night.

All-Star reserves are announced tonight. Really hoping for Russ because he certainly deserves it.

Kelly Dwyer Behind the Box Score: “Absolutely no stopping Kevin Durant, in this game. The Hornets did their worst, forcing Durant away from the basket while getting up on the All-Star at the three-point line, but it didn’t matter. He’d just rise up, taking the shot New Orleans wanted him to take (that low-percentage, long two-pointer), and … swish. Forty-three points, on just 19 shot attempts, for Durant. Double-figure rebounds, five assists. Dominant stuff, against a Hornets defense that has forced team after team into record-low production at times this year.”‘

Potential trade scenarios from Sactown Royalty.

Art Garcia of NBA.com with a nice feature on Serge Ibaka: “Durant is Ibaka’s personal coach for the event. The two have begun preparing dunks and going over their gameplan after practices Brooks couldn’t help but question Ibaka’s choice of Durant. “We say he’s smart, but he’s not that smart. He picked the wrong guy to coach him,” Brooks quipped. “Kevin has one dunk — the one-handed tomahawk.”

Russell Westbrook or Joe Johnson, Dime asks: “Also, as good as Westbrook has been, he has high potential to eventually sink OKC with his horse-blinders style in clutch moments. Often he has it real bad with only looking for his own shot when Durant is either unavailable or not open to receive the ball. Westbrook puts his head down, makes his moves, and usually gets a pull-up jumper that is not yet wholly reliable.”

My goodness has Bill Simmons aged.

TempBoy Brandon :Yeah, I don’t understand the wanting for a PF either. We have Green, Ibaka, Collison and even DJ White.
I think ideally, we all want to see this happen:
1. Get a legit 5.2. Move Ibaka in as the starting 4.3. Keep Green on as our backup 3.
Now since our backup SF would only get about 10 minutes per game, we’d need to find a way to get Green to about 25 minutes per game.

We don't need a backup SF. Harden or Thabo can slide over.

If we had Landry / Ibaka / Collison / CENTER as our front court rotation, that'd be a ton better than what we have now.

@f5alcon
and the smart money says that KD probably has 3-5 more of those 40 point games left in him this season.

lebron had the exact same number of 40+ point games in his first 4 seasons as durant does now

Now I am not saying we would get him, but with the losing record and previous butting heads with the coach, what are the chances that Kevin Love does not sign an extension with the Wolves? I know most players extend after their rookie contract, but I feel like Kevin is tired of that atmosphere.

@anonymous
Al and Traber are getting better about the NBA and Thunder than they used to be, but it's still pretty bad. Honestly, Al doesn't know anything outside of college football and basketball. And besides MLB, Traber doesn't know his pro sports either. I will give them credit for starting to know more about the NBA though. But really, the only one's on the Sports Animal who seem to know their Thunder and NBA really well are Craig and Bobby. I can't tell you how many times I've been annoyed by the fact that someone at the Sports Animal didn't know what they were talking about (yet made their point adamently as if they did know what they were talking about) when it comes to the NBA or NFL.

@Fuzzy Logic
I'd rather watch Clips/Magic.... Can I say that?

Go to NBA.com and vote for the Thunder / Grizzlies game for NBA TV's fan night on Feb 8th. We're currently losing badly to Clips / Magic.

They also wanted to draft Hasheem Thabeet and Jordan Hill.

@anonymous
I can't listen to those 2 talk NBA. Its painful. Although I can't really listen to Traber talk about anything.

I still remember 2 summers ago listening to the sports animal and Al and Traber were adament that the Thunder needed to trade KD for the clippers first pick to get griffin. Their reasoning was that KD was going to leave and Griffin wouldn't.

@TempBoy Brandon
i honestly wouldnt be surprised if griffin never plays here, like durant never plays for the wizards. If clippers over griffin max he shouldnt turn it down.

@Stephen
yeah well darnell is the only one qualified to actually talk about the nba, the others know less than most of us. I wish they would just sign a deal with royce to reprint his articles, and the other authors on here.

@Loud City Jimmy
last year of his contract

@Stephen
Yeah, I know as Oklahomans, we all love Blake Griffin, but I know that ship has sailed. If he wants to come home when his contract is up, that'd be great. But I'm not worried about it. I don't need to hear about the guy when I'm reading about my Thunder.

Dalembert also has a huge salary. Don't think that he is a serious option for us.

@TempBoy Brandon
You are absolutely right. I don't even mind giving Green the starting spot but 20-25 min should be his max.

dalembert would break up our FT prowess.

I like Dalembert,he knows that we need a paint presence,not a scorer,I think he would get a few points from RW,Maynor tho.All the other centers out there are going to be hard to get.

TempBoy Brandon :
Also, all you trade-happy folks won’t be excited to see what the Oklahoman’s writers have to say about making a trade:

I just read that. The only intelligent response is Mayberry's. Seriously, how do you consider yourself a news reporter when you call the Timberwolves and Clippers "fools" in an article? Just seems unprofessional to me. The first three responses just show how completely unqualified they are to be commenting on the NBA.

I also like, in an ironic sense, how they manage to work Blake Griffin into their responses. You don't have to point out how a team would take a superstar if it cost them nothing. But congrats on filling up the word count.

I ran the ASPM's for Durant's two big games (last night and 1/26 vs. Minny). Last night came up way bigger--he was worth 20 points above league average per 100 possessions last night, and only 11 points above league average per 100 possessions on 1/26. Game score has 1/26 higher; I'm not sure why. The big deal last night was his 90% TS% and 5 assists, along with his rebounding.

Pondering... was KD's game last night the best this year in the NBA?

@dylan
backup qb, cus the backup pg plays more every game, backup qb only plays mop up or takes a knee

Who is a more popular athlete? The backup quarterback or the backup point guard?

@Sammy
Was Mullens at the game last night?

@qrex
I think if he was assigned last night we would have heard about it. Announcement via Mayberry's twitter half an hour ago.

We don't need a 4. We have Ibaka and Collison at the 4. We need a 5 so Ibaka can move in as the starting 4. If we're going to trade for someone on that team Dalembert is probably the guyy to get.

@Sammy
Was he assigned to Tulsa before Krstic was injured? Didn't Krstic get hurt the last time Mullens was assigned to Tulsa? hmmm...

Mullens is back with Tulsa, as expected. Guess that means Krstic's MRI went okay.

maybe SAC's in the market for future 1st rounders and young underdeveloped bigs. That'd be swell..

Couldn't Landry be had w/o giving up Green? I'm not opposed to trading Green away, but you would think you could do better than Landry for him.

Green might be comparable if he did not have to play PF. Maybe even better. But that's not happening here.

steve.thunderfan :So the logic there would be trade green for landry because green is better?

Green and his representation will probably have a lot of ammunition to negotiate for a larger contract (starting PF on a playoff team, high minutes on a playoff team, high counting statistics due to the high minutes). Landry has vaccilated between starter and backup in Sacramento and doesn't have the statistical totals Green does. So I think Green will get paid more in free agency, even though he is the inferior player.

There are very few metrics by which Landry comes off as a worse player than Green. Even in Sacramento, where Landry's production has plummeted, Landry's performed better than Green ever has.

steve.thunderfan :So the logic there would be trade green for landry because green is better?

LOL!!

So the logic there would be trade green for landry because green is better?

One reason to trade Green for Landry is that Landry might get a lot less in free agency, and could more easily be retained at a sixth man price tag.

not feeling the Landry trade. He doesn't really give us anything that would be a large upgrade, and his trade value really isn't that high. He's also a guy that would be competing with Serge for a starting spot without being clearly better than him. With Brooks at the helm we might end up back at square one unhappy with our starting 4 while Serge rides the pine.

@justin
OR be able to provide floor spacing with accurate 3 point shooting! (JG:28.3% this season)

Landry is much stronger than Green IMO. He just carves out space. Even so, he's not a dominant rebounder. It's tough to make up for lack of length in the NBA when you're in the trenches. You either have to be super strong and / or have elite explosiveness (i.e. Rodman, Griffin, Barkley in his younger days). Green doesn't have either.

I feel Jeff could be and should be significantly better as a rebounder than he is. He's got great hands. When a ball is within his reach he almost always secures it. His positioning and effort is just not up to snuff. Sure he's undersized, but there are plenty of guys his size or smaller that rebound better (Carl Landry to name only one). He needs to focus less of his effort and energy on scoring end and more on rebounding.

@Brett

Game Score at the extreme right side of pages like this one

is a somewhat simplified form of PER.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Totally agree.

I think the Thunder have to think bigger than Landry. That trade is small potatoes.

I saw where Nenad was in a walking boot after the game. If he can't go against PHX wonder if Aldrich will get some burn?

@Floppy Punch!
yeah, that makes sense.

True, i'm sure Presti won't pull the trigger on a deal that could potentially upset the chemistry or upset KD unless he feels like its a significant upgrade.

Landry is scrappy, but he isn't going to step in and fill up a rebounding void. He's better than Green, but he isn't a dominant rebounder by any stretch from what I recall. Landry is a fantastic 6th man. I wouldn't mind having him here coming off the bench behind Serge. Of course, I wouldn't mind Green coming off the bench behind Serge either, so it seems like a wash to me.
