Kevin Durant: I’m still no star

Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE/Getty Images

At CBS Sports, I wrote a big long Kevin Durant feature talking to him about a number of different things. I spent a decent amount of time talking to KD, so I thought I’d transcribe some of it here as a Q&A too.

Two years ago, you said pretty emphatically that you were no star. After winning a scoring title, finishing runner-up for MVP and taking home a gold medal, how about now?

“Nah, I don’t”

What would it take then?

“I guess I just got to win a championship, I don’t know.”

What about an MVP or 10 straight scoring titles?

“I guess then you could say that, but right now, I haven’t really done too much. When I go to the other arenas and they call my name I kind of listen to the crowd. They don’t roar as much as they do for a Kobe or LeBron or Dwyane Wade or Carmelo. I’m not there. I’m happy with the progress I’m making as a player, I wouldn’t say I’m a star but I’m growing, I can tell you that.”

A lot of people make a big deal about Oklahoma City being the second smallest market in the league and therefore, you’re kind of hidden. But you were the second leading vote getter in the West behind Kobe. So do you think that stuff is overrated?

“Yeah it is, I think so. I didn’t know I’d be up there in votes at the beginning of the season. But it feels good for people to recognize who I play for and the team we have and just showing that respect to me as an All-Star starter that means I’m doing things more than just on the basketball court. It extends off the court. I just got to continue to be the person and player I am.”

Do you care much about profile and marketability and visibility?

Nah not really. I’m blessed to be in this position. All of that stuff is cool and it comes with the territory but I really don’t try and press it too much. I just like playing basketball. I just like coming in every day and playing with these guys. Anything else is just extra to me.”

A lot was made about your Twitter extension and then you bringing Nenad and Thabo onto the cover of SI with you and a whole bunch of other stuff like that. Do you find it weird people make such a big deal out of you just being yourself?

“Yeah man, sometimes it gets a little annoying. People make too much of a big deal out of it. Because other guys probably have done the same thing. I’m not the first guy to do things like that. But I’m just being myself.

I think the thing that really upsets me is a lot of people in talking about it too much try to say it was fake. That’s something that I think is BS because I’m just being myself. I’m just doing the things I was taught basically. It is what it is. I’ve just got to continue to be me and not let anybody change me.”

You’re known for being super humble, but let’s face it, you’re awesome at basketball. Is it ever hard not to step back and think, “I really am pretty darn good”?

“You know what, when I look at my box scores and see I’m 14 for 20 for 40 points, but I always think if I could’ve made these two jumpshots I could have 44 points. Or if I made a free throw I could have 45. So I’m always thinking bigger. I’m never complacent with what I did.

Of course I’m happy with the progress I’m making. Sometimes I get a little too excited at times but then I need to calm down, but I’m always looking to get better and get bigger, so I can never really get too complacent.”

@godofserenity
Cheers from Loud City, mate!

Cheers guys, good to be on board with a bunch of nba fanatics like yourselves. Looking forward to my first 'wtf are u talking about u stupid ozzie (aussie)' reply! Won't feel like part of the club til that happens!! :P

@innocent bystander, that is a good question. I'd love to see someone get benched for a block. Unfortunately, it will be via youtube or something later tonight as I'm currently *working*. cough cough. damn all star weekend!

btw, there's something I've been wondering about...

If a player accidentally plays some defense in the All Star (ya know, a reflex action, or something) then what happens? Is he immediately benched by the coach? Fined by the NBA? Sent to David Stern for a severe talking?

@ATH

That's borderline magical.

forget rihanna whatever... the BroIngtons should perform at half-time!

@godofserenity
welcome godofserenity (what a great name, I'm more like the 'peasant of chaos' personally)

love hearing from fans across the globe

yeah, I don't see Love coming to OKC at all. Minni would NEVER let go of him now -- or only if they got something huge in exchange, far more than Presti would ever offer. So, unfortunately, won't happen.

But if you asked Durant, Westbrook, and Love about it... I think you'd see 6 thumbs up!

@TempBoy Brandon
KD was wearing high heels in that pic
;)

Yep, welcome to the board, godofserenity and gokc! And thanks for supporting our team from abroad!

@Daniel
Kevin Love really does seem to love our Thunder guys. There really might be something to him wanting to come here. Who knows.

But seriously-- how many pictures is this we've seen now where there's a guy that KD is standing next to that's supposed to be an inch or two taller than KD, and yet KD looks an inch or two taller than him? I'm pretty sure KD is actually 8 feet tall.

Welcome godofserenity and gokc! Just like the two of you, I can certainly attest to the fact that many folks outside of OKC root for the Thunder!

Really awesome ad: http://dlvr.it/H6fnk

Maybe even MVP-quality.

Im another person who just recently started posting but have been reading since the dawn of truehoop... Im from dc and started following the sonics when they drafted kd and uncle jeff... Followed the thunder complety online and thru sportscenter... Love this team diehard fan all.the.way...

@Scott

Still wouldn't do it now IMO. Admittedly, he's a better 3 point shooter and grabs boards but c'mon, OKC wants a big defensive body. I think they've proven they can score the ball quite well already, bring in somebody to help Ibaka control the paint! A veteran would be great, just to help fast track Ibaka's development.

Hi guys, long time reader, first time poster. Just wanted to add my two cents regarding OKC's popularity, I'm from Australia and OKC are my 'favourite' team and are getting all the more popular over here with people beginning to wear KD/RW and I've even seen a few Ibaka jerseys at local basketball stadiums.
I get to watch the nba pretty much only via the internet due to the time difference and the ridiculous times that you guys play games. The reason why OKC is gaining popularity and audience is the same reason you guys love them over in the USA. They personify 'team' with how they play and conduct themselves, the low maintenance image of the team and of course, the high level at which they play. They even make it on to ESPN Australia!
Being the media 'darlings' help as well, it just helps to create a positive image of this organisation and the people within it and as such, wins over the casual viewer. A few years of this type of reporting would definitely make long term supporters of at least some of them.
OKC have a great chance to become a global brand because of who they are off the court, what they do on the court and the universal appeal of potential long term contenders without the 'rah rah' that is typical of the league.

I know this has been covered extensively in nearly every post but I can't help but show some love for Jeff Green for his skill set and personality. I realise the rebounding/defensive issues but considering his age and *still potential* upside which can be worked on, I would be hesitant to trade him unless I had to for financial reasons.

P.S. Love that all you guys are so well informed and into ball, just doesn't happen over here in Aus unfortunately, we're mostly too busy riding kangaroos. :P

justin :
There were comments here before this season stating they would not trade Jeff Green for Kevin Love.

Last season K Love and this season K Love are two very different animals. Well...one's an animal and the latter is a beast. I still would've done it last year.

but Kevin Love spends some quality time with KD too

the bromance continues...

There were comments here before this season stating they would not trade Jeff Green for Kevin Love.

oh wait, my "good ole days" pic wasn't that long ago

anyway, same result

Wow, Kevin Love really does enjoy hanging out with KD and Russ. Maybe it's because Love has no other teammates there and he has no one else that he feels as comfortable with.

I really do wonder if he'd consider signing with OKC when he becomes a free agent. Would we even have the cap space? Probably not, unless we don't keep Jeff Green this Summer.

@Daniel
I saw that too. And some people have already mentioned Love sitting with the Thunder players last night; definitely too many sightings to be coincidence. Everyone is more comfortable around people their own age but Love obviously has that history with Russ.

For better or worse, LeBron and Wade and Bosh changed the culture of free agency in the NBA; players realize they can team-up with friends if they're pushy or patient. Melo and Deron are handling their contracts in a completely worse way than LeBron, but the idea is spreading like a virus. I don't see Love demanding a trade but he might think twice before signing an extension with a bottom-three team.

I had refused to entertain Love-to-OKC (or any Star-to-OKC) possibilities, but young stars look up to LeBron, Melo, Paul, Deron, etc., and those guys are paving the way for such fantasies.

memories...

ah, the good ole days

but still, the best Westbrook/Love photo

Hey just curious, which trade would you guys rather have Denver take? Knicks or Nets?

I think I'd rather them do the Knicks trade. They wouldn't get any 1st round picks and Wilson Chandler would already be a restricted free agent. And they wouldn't get a promising big man in Favors. I doubt that Felton, Gallinari and Chandler are as effective when they are not in the the D'Antoni system.

What do you guys think? As a division rival, would you rather them have the Nets or Knicks deal?

who’s the midget in the middle?

lol that makes me feel like crap, that "midget" is taller than me, and im 6'1. :(

@DJ R7

My point is, besides the occasional basketball fan in new york, when the other sport nuts can't watch their team play, who do they go watch. Thats the bonus of being in a rich market. A Smart Owner, and management would build a team based off of chemistry like OKC. These guys seem like they would be willing to take pay cuts, If not Russ, Ibaka, Maynor, and Harden wouldn't have tooken that 1, or 2 year extension on their rookie contracts so the team could financially resolve itself. Can you imagine in 10 years the way OKC's Market, Metro, and popularity is growing. How much our value would increase. Having more cap space, good management, not a cheap owner, and a team build off of humble players is just terrific. Kinda wish that was now right?

f5alcon :@Scott

yeah yankees and baseball in general is more popular in NY, however the knicks have been top 8 attendance every year and no less than 97% capacity for the past decade even though they have sucked

Its New York, i believe New York Cities Metro area is nearly 3 times the size of ours. So when non-baseball fans don't have anything to do, and football season is over. Who else to go see. Now that both Baseball, and Football are over, whats left NHL? I would like to argue whether or not Hockey is the 4th most popular sport in the country. Although i don't respect the MLS, they get more exposure, and have more fans than Hockey.

How have I not seen this?? Was this posted anywhere on here? It's Jason Sudeikis of SNL and Jamie Foxx talking about the Thunder.

Also, in the post before, I think we can all agree that Russ, despite his final round performance, did great in beating Paul, Rose, and Wall in the Skills Challenge. KD did really poorly, but I do think that he was altering his shot for the contest. And Serge was absolutely robbed. I love Blake, but c'mon, that car dunk was all hype and flash, and no substance. Serge shoulda been in the finals, and yet he was last place. Just dumb.

This interview with KD was great though. I liked KD opening up about listening to the crowd in away arenas.

I wonder how those numbers are affected by number of Pro teams in each city. I would argue the Yankees are FAR more popular in NY than the Knicks in recent years. The Clippers get little to no national exposure (pre-Griffin) despite their market size.

@f5alcon
yea, and it's more complicated than that

for example, Atlanta is a huge city with a big market share -- yet the Hawks don't have that big of a following and have no big marketable superstar names playing there

@innocent bystander
the other thing is i think that is oklahoma city's tv market size, but thunder games are broadcast in tulsa and the rest of the state which is a different tv market. memphis is the same way it doesnt take nashville into account. However the texas teams because they are in the major cities compete somewhat with each other.

or, to turn my observation around, how well would Durant fare, as a marketable athlete, if the whole scenario had taken place about 10 years ago (i.e. team moves to OKC and builds around yound KD in 1998 instead of 2008)?

I'm sure Durant still would have gotten well known, and certainly been a big name among the hard-core fans. But as far as being a big name in the commercial market -- you have to wonder.

But as it is right now, KD is riding a wave of interest over the last couple of years that is probably mostly built around people following him and his team online. An individual city's TV market share may be an over-rated metric these days. Who knows.

if the ranking is correct, then OKC is neither the smallest or the second smallest, but actually the third smallest TV market for an NBA city

However, I'm not sure how accurate TV market share is any more for determining the "market value" (whatever that means) for a team. In this day of ubiquitous internet access, anybody can follow a team regardless of where they are. For example, we have people from Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. who watch Thunder games online, buy Thunder merchandise, post on chat boards, etc.

TV market size was probably paramount twenty years ago. Maybe even ten years ago. Not so sure about now.

I forgot New Orleans. Memphis and New Orleans are smaller than OKC and that's it.

the original data source was from tvb.org -- I looked at their site but I'm not sure how to dig out the current data

the second number after each entry (in parenthesis) is the market size
e.g. OKC is ranked 45th in TV market size

hoopCorner has a nice straightforward listing -- but it's from 2005 (Seattle not OKC)
NBA Market Rankings

I abbreviated the list above because wordpress was not accepting the full text

source was from this link: Can you name nba teams in order of market size

the post is two years old, but I doubt the rankings have changed much (if at all)

trying to find a list of NBA city TV market sizes -- not easy

the best I could find is this:

1. New York Knicks (1)
2. New Jersey Nets (1)
3. Los Angeles Lakers (2)
4. Los Angeles Clippers (2)
5. Chicago Bulls (3)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
25. Utah Jazz (33)
26. Milwaukee Bucks (35)
27. San Antonio Spurs (37)
28. Oklahoma City Thunder (45)
29. Memphis Grizzlies (48)
30. New Orleans Hornets (53)

@SmackDaddy
it depends on how market is defined. OKC proper is 450,000 or so people, metro is a bit over a million, but the whole state supports the team, we have season ticket holders in all counties. So 4 million or so people, and rally with no teams in kansas, we probably draw some fans from there. However I do not think the team markets as well as it could outside OKC.

Memphis is the smallest TV market I believe.

I think we are third smallest, ahead of New Orleans and Salt Lake City.

Oh and serious man crush on KD (no homo).

SD

OKC is the second smallest market in the league -- then who is the smallest?

is there a list somewhere?

@Cpt. C-note
Exactly. I'm looking for the west to win tonight, and it be a close call between KD and Russ on who's the MVP.

KD keepin it real.

They can have All-Star weekend. Time to get playoff-hungry!

Time to "redeem" yourself for a rough 3-point showing. KD never shoots the corner three anyways. Kev and Russ are gonna put on a show tonight. GO THUNDERER's!
