Harden scores 30, Ibaka drops two 3s in Rookie Challenge

LOS ANGELES — The game itself was about what you might expect. The Rookies won 148-140 but really it felt more like 256-254.

In terms of Thunder related items, James Harden was great, scoring 30 points on 11-18 shooting (4-9 from 3). Obviously, this was against swiss cheese defense, but still, he was the second leading scorer in the game. That counts for something. It’s the third straight strong showing for a Thunder player in the game. Kevin Durant scored 46 in 2009, Russell Westbrook 40 last year in Dallas and now Harden with 30.

The bigger news is what Serge Ibaka did. He scored 14 points on 6-10, but the way he got six of those is notable. Ibaka dropped two 3-pointers, looking cool and confident as he stroked both. One was a swish from the corner and the other a smooth bomb from the top of the key. I’m trying to contain my excitement because this is probably just an exhibition aberration, but still, if that’s something Ibaka has in his pocket… wow.

Harden also busted out a smooth windmill, showing off the athleticism nobody thinks he has. Also, KD was courtside (of course he was), sporting some slick glasses.

KD scores 46 in this game in '08, makes The Leap (to borrow a Bill Simmons-ism) in '09. Russ scores 40 in '09, makes The Leap in '10. The Beard scores 30 in '10. . . . . . Cross your fingers, ya'll.

@qrex
damn! you just beat me to it!

should be Serge O'Baka (he's Irish isn't he?)

;)

@innocent bystander
Maybe, they thought he was Irish. :)

whoever made that thing put in "Serge Obaka"

well... good try anyway!

what the heck?

@f5alcon

By paint do you mean that line painted around the periphery of the court or the exterior paint on Staples Center?

f5alcon :@Daniel
hopefully that helps hardens confidence.

i think the announcers said they are told not to defend in the paint

Would make sense looking at the incredible points totals.

hopefully that helps hardens confidence.

Man Serge could've had like 10 blocks in this game if he tried, but for some reason, he seemed to only be playing at half-speed.

I wonder if there is some unwritten rule not to challenge any shots at the rim. Kinda sucks for Serge since that's his greatest strength. So many times, I thought he was going to go up and swat one, only to have the opposing player easily lay it in right past him.

He didn't even try any ferocious dunks or putback jams or anything. He just seemed to kind of be drifting out there. He even missed a dunk, which doesn't look good when you're competing in the Slam Dunk contest the next day.

Oh well, such is the All-Star game, or rather, the spectacle that is the Rookie-Sophomore Challenge.

Proud of Harden for pouring in 30. Be that aggressive all the time James!

TNT's crew is the best. Kevin McHale was hilarious.

In case it hasn't yet been mentioned, Wall's bounce pass alley oop to Griffin was a thing of beauty.

Games (I use the term loosely in this instance) like this actually annoy me as far as Harden goes. I remember watching him in summer league and it was similar, the guy's basketball IQ and playmaking ability are off the charts. I don't know why he so rarely shows that same depth in regular games. I suspect it may have something to with Scott Brooks though.

@DSYIII
Harden has some of the prettiest passes too.

Man, it's hard not to to think we would be so much more dynamic of a team with harden in the starting lineup. He was only credited with one steal, but he caused turnovers with his quick hands on at least 5 possessions.

Hey Justin, do you think the Nuggets would make a Harden-Nene swap now?

Wait. Where's sbliss to tell us Harden sucks and doesn't deserve to be an NBA player

Harden missed a wide open layup, but besides that he was excellent. Showed off the hops a few times too. Fun to watch.

yeah, but if sefolosha played in harden's spot, he would have done the little things.

Harden showed up in a good way tonight. Would have looked awful to have him make it only to be relatively quiet. Maybe he didn't feel overshadowed b/c Russ and KD weren't on the court?

Harden was pretty Bieber-esque out there tonight

f5alcon :
KD=clark kent, underneath is a basketball superhero

This. Very much this. +1

I'm still sad that Ibaka didn't do more, but Yes Presti, we need Ibaka and Harden still on this team for the future

and to think they were gonna leave harden out

@osano-whoa
aldrich next year maybe?

Not only have thunder players made good showings in 3 consecutive games. A Thunder player has been the leading scorer for the Sophomores in 3 consecutive games.

ibaka better 3 point shooter than green
