All-Star Game: KD shines with 34, Westbrook thrills with his 12

LOS ANGELES — In his first start as an All-Star, Kevin Durant came out looking a bit nervous. He didn’t flinch when he was introduced with Lenny Kravitz blaring behind him. No dancing. No smiling.

And when the game started, KD clanged his first two jumpers. Then, like the Durantula often does, he got cooking.

KD finished the game with 34 points, second only to Kobe Bryant’s 37, in which he took home MVP honors for. Durant was 11-23 and 4-11 from 3 and put up some nice highlight worthy plays. He had a pretty rip and dunk in the first quarter, then right before the half finished a nifty lob from Chris Paul. Durant played a Western-high 30 minutes and really looked to be in to the game in the second half.

Durant got going late in the game as the East closed in on the West’s lead, knocking down a silly step-back jumper which he followed up by draining a 3. Naturally, the next three possessions Kobe had the ball, with Durant going without a touch. No bother though, because we all get it. When Kobe’s on the floor in that situation, he’s not letting someone else get it.

You could tell Russell Westbrook had Staples on the edge of its seat at all times. When he had the ball, the arena just buzzed with anticipation. Russ had a nice fastbreak dunk and finished with 12 points on 6-12 shooting. He and Kevin Love were the last two to check into the game and in the end, Westbrook finished with just 14 minutes.

But not a bad showing by our Thunder representatives in this one. Being in Los Angeles, you’d be shocked at what a household name not only KD is, but Westbrook too. Everyone was talking about Durant and every All-Star billboard, poster or sign featured KD on it with LeBron, Wade and Kobe (and whoever else). Despite what Durant might say, he’s a big time star. Whether he likes it or not.

Some notes:

  • I was kind of disappointed that when Westbrook was announced, the PA guy didn’t say he was from UCLA. I don’t know why I expected him to, but he didn’t. Left it out for Kevin Love too.
  • Staples can get eerily quiet. I realize this was an All-Star atmosphere, but it’s a totally different world here. People just aren’t near as into the game in terms of outward display. I don’t think they’re not paying attention, but it’s just not an excited arena. At the same time though, it kind of gives it this classy feel, which I find really cool.
  • Speaking of, I got to hear the organ that I love so much. I wish so badly the Thunder would go with the in-game musical stylings of the Lakers instead of all the weird tunes they play now. I just love that organ stuff. So classic NBA.
  • Serge Ibaka’s dunk prop kid was brought out for some awesome break dancing for one of the TV timeouts. It was impressive. But with him being out there, I couldn’t help but wonder if that whole thing with him losing his toy was staged or something…
  • Chris Bosh guarded KD just once, and when he did, Durant crossed him big time and dished to Pau Gasol for an easy layup.
  • Also: In a new NBA “big head” ad played in the arena, Chris Bosh and KD are next to each other in a pool and Bosh says “Feeling good Kevin?” Total coincidence? Or is the NBA really that clever?
  • The PA guy called Westbrook’s name out as “Wussell Westbwook” a couple times.
  • There’s just no downplaying how cool it was for Durant to be called out as a starter in this game. This is the first in a long line of starts for him, but this was certainly a neat moment.

"The PA guy called Westbrook’s name out as “Wussell Westbwook” a couple times."

Has anyone else noticed our home PA guy putting a lot of emphasis on the 'R' in Russell?

I'm almost positive it's to avoid the Wussell problem. (I hear announcers on some of our road games do the same thing. Sounds like Homestar.)

justin :If we don’t have a big guy by the time Love is available in free agency the team is in a lot of trouble.

And I agree w/ this. Our window to acquire Love closed this summer.

@justin

Ahh yeah, forgot that. My bad.

I dont want to get Love.Ibaka is good enough to be our PF.We need a C.I dont think Ibaka and Love can play C

@Loud City Jimmy
He should get A.No reason Pau Gasol got better grade than KD.

@Mark!

Stern picked Love as Yao's replacement.

justin :Minnesota won’t trade Love, and if Love becomes the first player since Moses to throw up 20-15 in a season his train won’t be slowing down no matter how bad he is defensively.

Hollinger has said that front offices and coaches don’t think as highly of him as the general public.

Didn’t coaches vote him into the All-Star game?

I might be wrong but I think that's referring to Minny's specific coaches who work with him everyday rather than other head coaches in the league. Still a pipe dream, getting Love, IMO.

@RWisMyFavThunder

Your options are basically to either accept your team's qualifying offer (which is a one year deal) or sign a contract. The contract you sign can be with your current team or any other team, and it can be for any amount and length allowed under the CBA. However, as an RFA your team has the right to match any offer signed with another team.

So to answer Kevin's question, Love could take the qualifying offer and play out his current contract in Minnesota ending 2012-13. After that, he would be a UFA before the 2013-14 season. Assuming there isn't a franchise tag or something else added to the CBA.

@Kevin

Hmm. That's a good point. I believe in RFA you can choose to go back to your team for less (as in the case of JG this summer if he ends up still being a Thunder), but I don't know about other teams.

KD & RW both given A- by SI

Also by ESPN

@Loud City Jimmy
I cannot wait to hear the crowd reception for Blake. It's going to be awesome.

Thomas :
On Sportscenter they just reported a rumor that Deron Williams would like to follow Carmelo to the Knicks in 2012 when Williams becomes a free agent. Not sure why everyone loves the Knicks so much all of the sudden but it would be nice to get him out of the NW division.

Exporting the 2 best players in our division not in a Thunder uniform to the east is absolutely fine with me.

I am really looking forward to tomorrow night...and Sunday for that matter. I had to miss the Kings game and with the snowpocalypse, I missed the Hornets and Grizzlies too. I haven't been in the arena since the Heat game, and I really just can't wait for the Griffen homecoming and last year's playoff rematch.

The switch to organ music over our current stuff NEEDS to happen. That stuff they play now is great, the first couple games, now it is bordering on annoying. They should at least try organ music for a game to see what the response is.

I may not understand restricted free agency, but isn't the only way that OKC could even get Love without a trade is Minnesota choosing not to match whatever contract OKC offers him?

and, naturally, just as Paul passes off the ball, he has to flop to the ground (smh)

Kobe reverse dunk, Paul steal, then Durant dunk

sweet

Why couldn't we just move Ibaka to the 5 if we got K-Love and make Ibaka work more on his post moves and put on more balk? Isn't he the same height as D-12?

naturally, Kevin is right there to slap his hand -- a little piece of Thunder U there

Love seeing him in a All Star jersey

Westbrook All Star Dunk

oh yeah!

I think Derrick Rose is going to be MVP. Just sayin.

I like how the NBA put the All Star weekend together. Thought it was better then Super Bowl. Entertainment wise.

here's a kinda weird (and mean) thread:

Is Derrick Rose is embarrassing himself in front of the world

I don't think Derrick did badly in the All-Star game. But he didn't particularly shine either.

boy, that's something a team NEVER wants to have happen to a player in an exhibition game

I know people have noticed that K-Love is buddying up with Russ and KD. I think Durant posted a pic on his facebook of the three of them hanging out before the game. I wonder if this is a sign that he wants to come to OKC. I know Love's people won't like him taking less money but he is like, our missing piece. We get Love, we enter the championship discussion.

Come on Presti, people are doubting you. Make it happen or your rep is on the line lol.

Not a good game from Miami's perspective though -- with Wade twisting his ankle!

I remember reading that. That front office is such a joke, when they actually have talent they won't keep on to it. It almost seems like a franchise build to fail. Then again the Vikings aren't doing so well eathier. even with their winning season last year they still were low in NFL Attendance. Maybe its just the state of minny

@DJ R7

I think you bench Ibaka if you get Kevin Love. Keep Ibaka-Collison together.

as much as i like love, and would love for him to be in our team, it may never happen. Same with Griffin. It was nice seeing them two, and our duo team up for 5 mins and go on a 10-4 run against the East. While Lebron, and Harford were playing. If we got Love, what would we do with ibaka? thats a good question.

a funny tweet from Darnell:

Doc Rivers on the crowd booing the four Celtics' All-Stars: "I thought that was beautiful."

I like that Doc!

"...every All-Star billboard, poster or sign featured KD on it..."

pictures please! I know you have a camera with you Royce.

@Keith
By next summer, I meant summer of 2012. And wouldn't he be RFA?

At any rate, I would bet the house that K-Love is not playing for Minny after his rookie contract is up. He is a smart guy, and is well aware their front office is the laughingstock of the league. Not to mention their current coach doesnt seem to like him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was right around here last season when the defense fell off, but the offense actually picked it up. Our defense can't really get worse without our players literally not even running down to defend at all, but with new confidence, I could see an incredible offense. Harden may find the heart to be aggressive and confident in his shot. KD and Russ have to be feeling good. Even Ibaka showed off that he can really be a player in this league.

Can we please bench Green and start introducing our starting lineup as the Oklahoma City All Stars?

@andrew
He won't be a free agent (and UFA at that) until 2012. I can't see why Minny would trade their leading scorer, the NBA's leading rebounder, all on a rookie contract, for anything (short of KD or Russ). I don't think he's overrated because no one is talking about him in the same breath as KD-Lebron-Kobe. He's just a great rebounder who can really shoot. He's not a superstar, but there are only a handful of those in the entire league.

I would be more than happy to trade anyone sans KD and Russ for Love, but I can't see why Minny would take it.

@andrew

Me too. Say this year was one of his good years, but next year, he injured for part of the season or just regresses a little, people might start thinking this year is an outlier. How does that work if there is no season next year? Do all the 2012 FAs, like K-Love, become 2013 FAs and so on?

Daniel :
Pretty cool stat for tonight.
“From Elias: Kobe Bryant (37) and Kevin Durant (34) each score 30 points for the Western Conference. It’s just the second pair of teammates to score 30 points in a NBA All-Star Game. The others were Bob McAdoo (30 points) and Julius Erving (30 points) in 1977.”

sweet! that is cool

I know it was just an All-Star game and all but...

With the West winning, and KD having a good game (especially coming on strong at the end) and Russell putting in a fine debut...I have something of that warm, fuzzy after-glow -- like I get after a Thunder win.

It's good.

Call me crazy, but I think Kevin Love is actually a attainable next summer. He is pretty overrated right now, and I think by next summer the consensus will have shifted back to "he is a valuable player, but not as much as the stats indicate." He isn't a post scorer, and is definitely a defensive liability. That, coupled with the fact that he is white(come on, we all know its a factor), and i don't think good teams are going to be rushing to throw huge contracts at him. He also seems like the kind of guy who would actually want to team up with Russ and KD even if it meant a slight pay cut.

Whether we have the flexibility at that point to make a run at him remains to be seen. Probably doubtful though.

"Chris Bosh guarded KD just once"

evidently that was enough
8)

I know it is just an All-Star Game, but I loved that KD basically closed the game out when it got close in the final two minutes. He hit some big shots (save the one miss 3) to win it for the West. He's only done that a few times in his career and there are only three games this season (Por, NY, Orl) where I can point to KD winning it for the Thunder in the fourth and closing the game out

In the post game handshakes/hugs, Bosh held on to KD and was right in his ear. I think its squashed. Or he was whispering sweet nothings.

"Staples can get eerily quiet."

until Blake Griffin's name is uttered on the PA or he steps onto the court...

the kid's already a super-star in la la land

Pretty cool stat for tonight.

That little kid was also in Chris Brown's Yeah 3X music video. Not a bad list of people to have worked with.

that's a nice recap Royce -- but it doesn't substitute for the "My Impressions of All-Star Weekend in LA" post that we all expect later.
:)
