Monday Bolts – 1.31.11

Ben Golliver of CBS Sports on Durant’s comments: “Durant’s words mark another development in his career arc, as, up to this point, he’s been content with proving himself on the court and avoiding any major exchanges of words off the court. Here, though, Durant clearly felt that protocol had been violated. To go at Bosh in such a personal way — poking fun at his decision to team up with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, to call into question Bosh’s toughness — shows an edge I can’t recall seeing out of Durant. I kind of like it.”

Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN.com: “Speed in transition, high screens, curls and a hearty Westbrook-Durant two-man game pace the Thunder, but they’re capable of more creativity than they showed in the half court. And what’s happened on the other side of the floor? When assistant Ron Adams returned to Chicago, did he take the OKC defense with him?”

Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com: “When Sunday began, the Heat and Thunder weren’t rivals and the current groupings of players had virtually no history together. By the time the heated contest was over, stars were firing unexpected trash talk, the Heat were considering whether their 108-103 victory was the best of the season and the two teams had staged an instant classic replete with the type of clutch play and physicality that is typically reserved for the playoffs. The emotions of it all poured out from an unlikely source, Kevin Durant, the low-key and usually reserved Thunder star who walked off the court barking at the newly returned Chris Bosh and added spice to what was a remarkably hard-fought game.”

Hot Hot Hoops feels like KD was “pouting” after the loss.

I really liked this description of OKC’s basketball experience from Joe Goodman of the Miami Herald: “Welcome to Oklahoma City Arena, a place like no other in the world of the hip-hop cool NBA. The Heat (32-14) makes its only appearance of the season in Oklahoma City at 1 p.m. Sunday. The nationally televised game will showcase this far-flung basketball outpost, an atmosphere unlike anything else on the NBA schedule.”

Matt Moore for PBT: “For a guy as vanilla as KD, that’s the equivalent of calling someone a dirty word. Durant himself has been described as super nice, even as this more competitive side starts to poke through more and more. Bosh has taken a considerable flak for not being “tough” inside, but he also did superb work against a weaker Thunder interior, with a combination of hook shots, inside layups off the cut and his preferred mid-range jumper. That Durant has words for him is pretty indicative of where Bosh’s reputation has landed. Still, if Durant didn’t have the fan-friendly reputation he has, you have to wonder if he would be slapped with a sore-loser comment. But because he’s Durant, and Bosh is, well, like a Bosh, this will probably only serve to make Durant more a hero to the people.”

Peter King of SI with a shoutout to Russ in the MMQB.

Marc Stein’s All-Star reserves: “I’m sure some voters are going to have Westbrook ahead of Williams on the West ladder given the leap made to elite status by the Thunder’s springy lead guard … and the way Utah has been sliding this month in spite of D-Will’s nightly damage. I can handle that.”

Chris Tomasson of Fanhouse snubs Westbrook: “It’s really tough to leave a guy off averaging 22.4 points and 8.4 assists for a first-place team. But he did tell FanHouse last week “it’s not a big deal” for him to make the All-Star Game and, “I don’t really care.” So we’ll assume he won’t be too torn up spending All-Star Weekend at a Caribbean island of his choosing.”

From ESPN Stats and Info: “With about 15 seconds left in the 4th quarter and the Thunder down 2 Sunday against the Heat, Kevin Durant missed a 7-foot jumper that would have tied the game. This is nothing new for Durant, who has missed 26 of 33 potential game-tying or go-ahead field goal attempts in the final 24 seconds of the 4th quarter or overtime over the past 3 seasons. Not only are those 26 misses the most by any player in this situation in that span, but among the 10 NBA players who have at least 20 such FGA over the past 3 years, Durant also has the third-lowest FG pct at 21.2. Keep in mind that the league average FG pct in this situation is 30.7%.”

Eric Freeman of BDL on KD: “Could Durant’s reputation all be a sham? Is he actually a big meanie who picks fights with lizard-looking forwards and then talks smack about them to the press? Is up now down? Um, no, unless you bought into the hyperbole surrounding Durant’s nice guy image and forgot that he plays a sport in which all the best players are pathologically competitive. Like most All-NBA talents, KD plays to win, and he sometimes gets mad in the wake of a loss when he feels like he was treated improperly by another player. He’s a basketball player, not a saint, so this is basically par for the course.”

justin :@dylan

That was an informative and necessary post.

Just think of me as the ombudsman

Pouting? GTFO.

Pouting is what Lebron did in his Nike commercial.

I'm still freaking stoked we have a team at all. Does that make me a care bear or a rainbow?

@dylan

That was an informative and necessary post. :)

there's about a 10-mile wide difference between "posts that point out the faults and analyze stats" and spazzing out about Brooks being a stupid idiot and whining about play calling or substitutions or whatever.

No one has a problem with posts that reasonably call out problems, posts like those are necessary and informative.

Just want to say that as much as some of you hate when Justin "complains" about the team as its regularly put, some of us hate the Care Bears and rainbows approach some Thunder fans take. I'm probably in the minority, but I enjoy the posts that point out the faults and analyze stats as much as the positive stuff. I like thinking about the game, not just turning on a broadcast to zone out and think everyone involved knows better than I do so I should just accept everything at face value.

Durant is a nice Guy, but that'll is also somewhat of a conscious image choice... remember kd is from Dc and grew up playing I'm in Barry farms..those courts don't raise punks

@Mark!
Get a job with the thunder then :) not sure we'll ever find out the behind closed doors interaction when it comes to this specific team

@Mark!
i feel like that the front office trusts brooks and dont step on his toes

How close do you think Presti and Brooks work together?

Occasionally, I see rhetoric in the comments alluding to ideas that Brooks may be a little clueless, but Presti knows the truth. It's confusing to me... partly due to how closed our organization is. I've read numerous stories about how the Rockets front office aids the coaches and players with matchup and lineup analyses and tendency breakdowns for defenders. What does our front office do?

I have a hard time believing that Presti sees things in a dramatically different light than Brooks. If Presti really believed our minutes allocation or lineups were bad, why wouldn't he provide some information for Brooks to make a change? It seems more likely to me that either Presti believes in being 100% hands off or he's in agreement with what Brooks is doing than there being some kind of antangonistic relationship behind closed doors.

I'd really just like to know more about how the organization is being run, specifically regarding how the front office and coaching staff intersect.

@gr8ball83
True...True...

@kfmsooner
Whats the point? Is he definitely better than Cole? Or will he sit on the bench in a tie?

Any interest in Mozgov? 23 pts, 14 rbds in 40 minutes on Sunday. Knicks need 1st round picks...

Aside from our defensive and rebounding issues, which I agree are real, I think this issue of passing, as well as movement without the ball on offense, are serious obstacles to our improvement. As has been hashed and rehashed on DT, our end of quarter/game possessions are pathetic. A similar senario plays out on the majority of our offensive possessions. How often do you see more than 1 or 2 passes during a possession? How often do you see anyone other than Kevin moving without the ball? Russell and Kevin are our stars and should be expected to take some difficult shots but they must learn when to take smart shots. Lots of dumb shots between them yesterday.

@brentn31475
I can't be so optomistic, nor should anyone else. We lost to the 3rd place team in the Eastern conference on our home floor. There is no moral victory in that.

What do you think Cleveland fans were saying after Mike Brown won coach of the year? Do you think people were saying, "Dude's the coach of the year...I think he knows what he's doing?" Then he gets fired. Anyone who says Scott Brooks is 100% the answer for this team has their head in the sand. Brooks may be a coach that leads us to a title, but there are some signs of weakness in his coaching.

We are a young team, with plenty of room for growth. But the players who can grow the most, Ibaka, Harden, Aldrich, are left with scraps for minutes and don't seem to be getting any better. I fear Harden or Ibaka getting traded/not signed and blowing up with a coach that uses their talents and athleticism to the fullest potential.

@brentn31475

The team isn't new to everyone. :)

Everyone sure moans and groans a lot for having a new team that is 30-17, and leading the NW division, while still being one of the youngest teams in the NBA.

Really Dr Rumble, who are you to compare Scott Brooks, (last years coach of the year), to Mike Brown? I think he probably knows a little bit more than the rest of us what he's doing with the team.

We are an unpolished team, and we're also a very very young team, with room for growth! I'm guessing if Serge isn't playing there's a reason.

anonymous :@Brad

It kind of makes me wonder if Scotty will fall victim to the coach of the year curse.

I hope not, I really do like brooks. For me the question is why don't these players trust that they will get the ball back? Is that something the coaches have a significant amount of control over? We like to think the coaches can say the right words that will get them to trust each other but really it comes down to the players.

@justin
yeah actually can stretch the floor that way.

Nobody wants to pass the ball because they know they won’t get it back.

This is probably the most obvious and significant issue with our half court offense. Strangely enough it’s the one thing few people are talking about.

It’s also yet another similarity to the Arenas-Jamison-Butler Wizards…

I would enjoy it if you refrained from making that comparison in the future...

@justin
I actually like Krstic's defense, but I watched a lot of Cole at KU, I think he's going to be good on that side. Totally agree with that offensive analysis though.

EWWWWWWWW!

Westbrook, Green, and Durant combined for 2-15 from 16-23 feet against the Heat.

I put together a review of yesterday's game, looking at it from an Advanced Statistical Plus/Minus perspective. http://godismyjudgeok.com/DStats/2011/nba-stats/aspm-box-score-thunder-heat/

I think the Ibaka issue is about mental development.

When Ibaka first started getting a few minutes, he was allowed to use his athleticism and energy to affect the game. The truth is, such an approach will only benefit the Thunder in limited minutes. At a certain point, you have to have a player on the floor who understands the defensive and offensive system. At first the staff let the stuff slide and as Ibaka got better, he was awarded more minutes.

Yesterday I saw Serge try to block a shot by jumping over the back of Anthony. Serge was so far away from the play that the only way he could have been any help at all was to try to position himself for the defensive rebound. So, not only was he out of defensive position, he tried to leapfrog a guy AND fouled the shooter driving down the lane. That's something you can live with when a guy plays for 10 minutes. But that's not something you want to see out of your 3rd best player.

We've talked on here about 100 times by now how lost Serge is on offense. Unless Serge is setting a screen or getting an offensive rebound and putback, he's as lost as he can be on offense. When he catches the ball, he shoots it, or passes back to the PG to start the offense all over again. There is no understanding about ball movement, finding cutters, finding an open shooter, or even making a move. He shoots, or starts over. That's it.

If Serge wants to play more minutes, he needs to step it up in the mental areas of the game. Otherwise he's just a great energy guy in short bursts.

That being said, we sure could have used his rebounding late in the game yesterday.

@Justin

Haha, okay maybe that is a little too much to ask.

Again, I agree on the min that he is getting. There is no reason for Jeff to be getting 35+ min a game. Something HAS to be going on w Serge that we don't know about these last couple games. He has done something bc 13 and 9 min is just no acceptable. Also, I have no problem w Cook taking min away from Sef, but he definitely should not be taking any from Harden. Brooks is turning out to be a lot like Mike Brown this season, where he is not that good of a coach but his incredible players save him game after game.

gr8ball83 :@justin

Rebounded and defended well in college, rebounding and defending well in D-League, I think he’ll rebound and defend better than Krstic in the NBA

I think you underrate Nenad Krstic as a defender, but yes he is a poor rebounder.

Re-watching parts of this game it's tough to understand why Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are permitted to shoot some of these shots. Horrible decision making. The lack of trust in their teammates (and, at times, each other) flies against all the fortune cookie chemistry drivel. Nobody wants to pass the ball because they know they won't get it back.

@justin

Cole is playing better but it's still the D-League, where Dexter Pittman, Marcus Cousin, and Sean Williams are the dominant big men.

If we trade Serge, even for a good center. We are screwed because then we have no real PF to put on the other team's PF. It will still just be "In Green We Trust", which usually equates to "With Green We Lose"

@David
No!! We have Nenad and Ibaka and Collison playing center!! We won't need a real center!!

Hi, I'm Cole Aldrich. I got 20pts and 16 boards last night in 30 mins of playing time. I bet you guys could use some of that. So freaking call me up and give me some playing time.

Keith :@KingGondo

Maybe it’s not attitude related at all and Presti is about to trade him.

Plausible, although the thought of us trading Serge makes me a little queasy...

Although I don't think there's anyone on our roster with more trade value (outside of KD and Russ). Maynor has some good trade value too, and our use for him is decreasing by the game...

Man, KG is such an awesome human being:

@jadande KG to ballboy hoping to get his ball signed: "You've got a better chance of catching Bin Laden"

KingGondo :
I’m still wondering exactly what Serge did to end up in the doghouse, and I hope he gets out soon.

James Harden was lonely.

@KingGondo

@f5alcon

I liked the Maynor-Cook-Harden lineup they ran for awhile. Harden's big enough to guard some small forwards, and having two shooters on the floor was nice.

@f5alcon
considering how average Thabo's defense has been this year I think Cook's offense out weighs Thabo's defense

@justin
if cook took mins from thabo it would be better they at least have to guard him, his defense is kinda bad, but somethimes we need offense when we get stuck in a rut of not scoring

@Dr. Rumble
I think there's something going on with Ibaka that we don't know about, he's way too good to not be playing more than 9 minutes, and the "not ready to play" thing sounds like coach talk.

@Dr. Rumble

Against the Hornets and David West? That might be a tall order. :)

I point out things Green does well a lot. But he's out of position, and an average player playing star minutes, so he's kind of prominent.

My main issue with Green is his minutes. It bothers me he gets so many minutes at PF, when Ibaka should get more. Cook, same thing but with Harden. Ibaka and Harden can get better. Green and Cook are more or less complete packages at this point. I'll be really disappointed if what Royce said about Cook getting minutes from Harden is true.

@F5alcon

I agree with this completely. After the Wizards game he said he didn't play Ibaka bc of "match up problems". This tells me he is letting them control the flow of the game. He is saying they are putting their lineup out there and we need to match up w them. How about we try to make our own mis-matches with a bigger line up? I don't know, for some reason that just really upset me as a reason for not playing Ibaka, and it seemed to be the same during the Heat game.

You don't have a bias against Green? Please, Justin, I have never seen a poster pick out everything a player does wrong, while never pouting out what he does good, than you do with him. In fact the only other player I see you do this with is Cook, which has only been one game really. Green had a great game and didn't complete one play. That ended up being a huge play, but we still had a chance to rectify that mistake and couldn't execute. I agree the coach needs to make changes that he hasn't show he can do yet, especially with Jeff.
Do you think you can go through next game without pointing every single mistake Jeff makes?

@kris.ducharme
Too bad they won't get their wish.

We're a defensive big man away from having a chance, IMO.
