Friday Bolts – 1.14.11

Stan Van Gundy after the game about the Skirvin: “What haunts me are guys like Kevin Durant,” Van Gundy said. “So, I would say this building is haunted because of guys like him, as are most of the buildings in the NBA. I haven’t run into a haunted hotel, just haunted arenas.”

Eddy Rivera of Magic Basketball: “Ironically enough, Orlando could have gotten away with Durant and Westbrook going nova on offense if they contained the role players. No offense to Nenad Krstic, but he shouldn’t be putting up 16 points and 11 rebounds. As Reggie Miller said on the TNT broadcast, that’s found money. It’s true. Guys like Jeff Green, James Harden, and Serge Ibaka are going to contribute but the key is to limit their impact and unfortunately for the Magic, they were unable to do so. That’s one of the reasons that Orlando lost in an otherwise winnable scenario.”

From Elias: “Kevin Durant scored 36 points and Russell Westbrook scored 32 in the Thunder’s 125-124 win over the Magic. It was the first time in over 10 years that teammates scored more than 30 points in a regulation-time game against Orlando. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal were the last players to do so (March 21, 1999). Allen Iverson and Chris Webber both topped the 30-point mark for the 76ers in an OT game against the Magic in 2006, as did Rashard Lewis and Gary Payton for the Sonics in 2001 (2 OTs).”

Russell Westbrook took the Daily Dime’s best player award. Tough to say if he was really better than Durant though.

Dime: “Is there a way David Stern can schedule Orlando vs. Oklahoma City every night? If not, can he at least just give us the Thunder seven nights a week? We can’t be alone when we say they get more exciting as the team gets better. Orlando combined with OKC last night for some serious fireworks … Behind spectacular games from Russell Westbrook (32 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists) and Kevin Durant (36 points) — who abused whomever Orlando checked them with — the Thunder led throughout and answered every run the Magic tried to make.”

Darnell Mayberry: “As I wrote for Friday’s paper, this was a huge win. It can build confidence and perhaps begin to establish some consistency. The Thunder’s defense was better than the final score would indicate, and the offense looked incredible tonight. Most importantly, there were no dry spells, no prolonged letdowns that allowed Orlando to peel off costly runs. This was the Thunder’s most complete game, and it could have some carry over going into the second half of the season.”

Orlando Pinstriped Post: “And that’s the one positive to take from this game if you’re Orlando: that the team scored essentially at will. Durant leads the league in scoring, and 28 points is an average night for him, so he’ll get his. The bigger issue is the Magic didn’t stop the ball in transition, nor did they rebound effectively. Letting Westbrook run roughshod over them is more of a problem than Durant’s scoring is.”

Sekou Smith of NBA.com: “In a half season filled with salacious story lines, we’d almost forgotten about those young cats in Oklahoma City. Sure, they were the cover boys on all the preseason magazines and everyone’s trendy pick to challenge the Lakers in the Western Conference. But when the season started, their elders in San Antonio and Dallas stole their thunder. Seeing Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green and the boys go toe-to-toe with the Magic last night, reminded us just how mighty the Thunder can be. Whatever they lack in experience, they seem to make up for in energy, effort, determination and chemistry. Not even a dominant showing from Dwight Howard could stop the Thunder last night.”

Simmons is back to not calling us by name anymore. But when you read this, you see how non-serious this whole thing is.

Is it just me or does James Harden look like a young Grady from Sanford and Son with that big beard? I think it's time for a trim!

Patrick James :@Steve H@ATL@MEM@MIA@PHX@PHI@CLE@WAS
, CHA, TOR, MIN, GS. Three back-to-backs.

I'm sorry, but that looks like an entire month of cake to me. Of the 7 "tough" games you list, 3 are against teams who currently have a losing record. Of the remaining 4 teams with winning records, 2 of them (UTA & POR) are at home. I would not be suprised to find that that is statistically the easist month on any NBA team's schedule this year.

@Easton
Ty Thomas duplicates Ibaka's skillset in a lot of ways + he has a pretty terrible reputation for being a headcase, difficult to coach, no work ethic, yada yada. That's not someone Presti's trading for.

@Easton

If we hadnt done the Nick Collison thing and had cap space to burn, Charlotte would have been an attractive trade partner. Im not sure I want Tyrus for this team (with Ibaka), and i feel like Ibaka is the guy that would be given up. Ill keep Serge.

What do you think we would have to give charlotte for tyrus thomas? Any thoughts? They need to rebuild and we have some picks?

I think the schedule as a whole is tough the rest of the year, no long stretches of easy, but we end up with some luck, like mon @ lakers they are end of back to back and we have 3 days rest.

@Patrick James@min
and vs. Was) are all we get and we play every elite team in the league save Boston.

@Sammy
So mclendon is really happy, but it looks like clay not so much

@Steve H

I'd also love some sweet sweet revenge. Maybe a Thunder player can do the 'stick my lower teeth out and shake my head because I think it looks cool' Kobe look every time he makes a basket. But it should be someone who has no business trying that look -- to make it funny.

Harden? Would the beard make it funny?

Krstic? ...yeah. that's the one. oh man, hilarious mental image.

@Steve H

I think March may end up being OKC's toughest month, if not for the teams the Thunder plays then the number of games in total. The Thunder starts off playing eight games in 13 days and plays 16 games total (although OKC played 16 games in December as well). Tough games are @ATL, PHX, @MEM, @MIA, UTA, POR, @PHX, easier games are IND, @PHI, DET, @CLE, @WAS, CHA, TOR, MIN, GS. Three back-to-backs.

@Anonymous

Maybe because it's been long enough that it doesn't matter anymore? Maybe because Clay Bennett promised he'd do what he could to keep the team there, while simultaneously figuring out a way to move it ASAP?

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that the Thunder is here, and I've actually met Mr. Bennett and he was very kind to everyone he saw in my office (including the secretary. off topic, but that's a big thing to me. how you treat people who are supposed to be 'below' you in an office environment), but I can still understand the psuedo-protest -- the pain is a lot more recent for Sonics fans.

Really looking forward to the Laker game Monday. They play the Clippers Sunday afternoon, and we will be their 3rd game over a 4 day span. Don't know if fatigue should factor in this early in the season, but we should certainly have the fresher legs. I am both shocked and delighted at our record so far in what looked to be a truly evil month- whipping the champs in their own house to start our roughest month at 5-2 would be huge.

@Anonymous
Few other teams have moved after building up the legacy the Sonics had in Seattle. Those that did left cities that now have teams again.

@Landstander
I wanted Ibaka to take the three, but I don't think he realized how much time was on the clock.

@Sammy

I love it. I was somewhere in the 3rd zone, myself. It was a 'no, no no no no...YES!' moment.

@Anonymous

To be fair, Simmons didn't avoid saying 'the Thunder' to disrespect our city or team. He did it more to show empathy to Seattle. I guess it just got under people's skin.

I actually thought the Skirvin story was pretty amusing.

And no...the Seahawks apparently do *not* need grammar. That was a little painful to read.

As far as last night's game goes, I thought the Thunder would be killed by 3 point shooting (and lucky baskets). And really, they were. They just happened to play a really good game. It was fun to watch.

And did anyone else notice the announcers gush over Howard's 'nice move!' when he got the 'and 1' by chucking the ball up and getting lucky with it catching on the rim and falling in?

If he's actually practiced that particular shot, I'll be impressed.

@Sammy

That is so awesome.

@DSMok1

Hmm ... yeah. I guess not. Oh well. I'll to stick with fouls called for the officiating numbers I'm looking for, which is a much more imperfect stat because of late-game situations, but that's about all I have to work with.

Patrick James :@justin

That’s what I feared. No worries. Thanks!

StatsbyNumbers has it, but I think the data is incomplete--perhaps the play-by-play data doesn't always state what type of turnover occurs.

@Thomas
Bobs are broke and looking to save money. Crash is their best player. I'm sure they could get actual assets for him, if they wanted.

Brent :
I am trying to decide if it is good or bad that Bill Simmons is telling everyone in America that OKC is haunted instead of how much fun he had and how awesome the Thunder are…

I think the more we can play up this haunted mystique the better it will be for our home court advantage. Either that or the Colcord's bottom line.

Pruiti's got a new post on the Thunder's perimeter D and it's an absolutely perfect example of how we're getting burned on the perimeter:

@Sammy
That's really sad. Gerald is a pretty decent player. Are they just in total rebuilding mode or have they lost faith in him due to the recent injuries? I thought I'd heard they were playing better recently.

I am trying to decide if it is good or bad that Bill Simmons is telling everyone in America that OKC is haunted instead of how much fun he had and how awesome the Thunder are...

@MastrMatt- Gerald Wallace, so named for his penchant for attacking the basket w/ reckless abandon.

@John
I don't see the resemblance.

@Sammy- Even sadder is that if Cavs land Crash, they would have no use for Green in a Green/Sideshow Bob trade.

John :I don’t call BS by his name either. To me, he is just “idiot.”
Is it just me, or does anyone else think Russell Westbrook and Cam Newton could be brothers?

Westbrook and Daniel Orton are long lost twins.

Bobs are discussing trading Crash to the Cavs for their player exception. That's pretty sad.

@Patrick James

I don't know of any site that compiles this information, you'd need to get it yourself out of some kind of game log spreadsheet(s) or DB.

Hey stat heads: Quick question to aid me in writing a column going up later today.

Do any of the stat sites show traveling calls against particular teams, and can those calls be broken down into home and away games? If it shows them game-by-game, that would work fine because I can look game-by-game and add them up.

@shiki=4 seasons
I am becoming skeptical about the power rankings other than their conversational value.

Are there any links to previous seasons so we can check their accuracy?

Jeff Allen :
If anyOne wants to rewatch the game it’s on nbatv at 12 et

Sweet! Don't tell me who won.

We can have better position in all power rankings.

@profsearcy
HAAAA!!! Classic!

Damn right ! Thunder up!

I like that our boys are an after thought.. Gives them motivation.

Read down before he makes his official picks, Bill Simmons isn't going to be calling us OKC again for a while.
