A small progress report on Cole Aldrich

Joe Murphy/NBAE/Getty Images

Most people have been disappointed with the selection of Aldrich to this point as they still call for that elusive “big man” to come swooping in and save the Thunder from their 26-13 record and first place spot in the Northwest Division. But the Aldrich pick was and remains about the future. Like everything else in Oklahoma City, it’s about developing talent.

So instead of sitting on the end of the bench, Sam Presti has utilized his options. Aldrich has spent the past few weeks in Tulsa developing his game with the Thunder’s D-League affiliate 66ers.

Wednesday, the 66ers were on NBATV as part of the D-League Showcase and Aldrich has his best game as a professional at any level. He scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked seven shots. He was a dominant post presence on both ends. And before you say, “Well this is the D-League,” yes that’s true, but Aldrich was playing against a guy many believe will be called up in the near future in Chris Johnson.

Some observations:

  • First, how about this freaking sky hook Aldrich busted out? If that’s really something he’s going to have as part of his game, then I might be so giddy that I’ll have to wear adult diapers to games from now on. I think more than anything, it really showcases how hard he’s working to at least become an offensive option. That hook isn’t something he had three months ago. He’s been working, and it shows.

    • One big negative I see in Aldrich is that he drifts at times. He just kind of gets lost in the flow the game and stops impacting anything. He really turns into that kind of big man that gets stuck in between 3-point lines. He just shuffles back and forth up and down the court. I don’t know if that’s because he’s tired and a bit out of shape because he hasn’t seen a ton of game action the past few months or if it’s a mental thing where he takes plays off. But he has the length and ability to constantly impact a game. When he’s assertive and locked in, he makes a difference. I don’t necessarily think it’s an effort thing with him, just probably habit.
    • To that point, I noticed he got caught a few times not rotating at all from the weakside. The seven blocks are very nice, but it could’ve been 10 had he rotated properly.
    • He actually passes really well out of a double-team. That’s not something he’ll see a lot of in the NBA, but still, Aldrich can move the ball a bit.
    • I think his biggest hurdle is actually feeling confident enough in his skills to try and assert himself. Especially offensively, he something doesn’t really look sure of himself. Like he’s thinking, “Am I really capable of hitting this baby hook? OK, here we go, drop-step, dribble…” Aldrich just has to get to the point where everything comes from instinct. Oh, I’ve got an iso on the block here? Boom, baby hook.
    • Look at the picture at the top. Both hands!
    • There is no reason he can’t be a good big man in the league. An All-Star, no. But I see Aldrich having the opportunity to average 10 points and eight rebounds routinely.
    • Not about Aldrich, but don’t forget that Latavious Williams is a Thunder player now. And he’s got some serious potential. He’s extremely raw, but he could become a nice power forward too.
    • With all that said, Aldrich does just look awkward. He doesn’t move like an NBA player.

    Remember, Aldrich was the 11th pick in the draft. He set the single-season blocks record at Kansas. The guy can play. To label anyone a bust just three months into their NBA career is unfair. Big men develop more slowly than others. Joakim Noah wasn’t much his first two years even and now he’s one of the premier big men in the league.

    Aldrich could certainly still be Robert Swift, but he could also pan out into something pretty good. I see a lot of ability there. It’s just a matter of being patient and hoping Aldrich refines those abilities into a quality NBA big man.

    Hey Dwight, like what you see? Man I'd love to see him in Thunder blue one day. Russ, KD, Superman > Heat

    justin :
    Spurs are calling up Larry Owens from the 66ers.

    First the Suns call up Zabian Dowdell and now the Spurs are calling up Larry Owens...Hopefully they can continue their 8 game win streak after losing two of their best players...

    Tallcann :@PNT@thomas

    Man i was hoping i could start a “bring a game to tulsa campaign” but o well.

    Do they stream the games online for free or is that through NBA TV

    Yes, they stream all their games on NBA.com for free. I don't think they stream their games that are on NBATV though...

    Jax Raging Bile Duct :And how about him sleeping through the draft, like it was days of our lives or something? That’s crazy isn’t it?! I gotta watch that again.

    That part had me laughing.

    @Aaron
    That is a HUGE case of voice does not match the body with Williams.

    @Aaron

    Dude, that Latavious Williams interview is something else. I loved when the guy asked him if he focused on rebounding, and Latavious says "they just be floatin' out there, so I go get 'em". HA! LOVE IT!

    I hope that kid makes it.

    Here is an interview with Cole after the game yesterday:

    Also, an interview with Latavious Williams

    I've watched Cole a couple times online with the 66ers. I hate to say it but he looks sort of lazy at times.

    It's so funny how Westbrook tweets some variation of the same tweet before every game:@bigray4
    just finished talkn too fam... now abt too head too the arena....lets get ittt!!!!! turnnnn upppppp!!! ayeeeeeeee

    Wonder how long he's been doing that.

    @Jax Raging Bile Duct
    there was something wacky about the measurements for cole, wasnt his in shoes height like 2 inches different than his without shoes?? he's not wearing platforms or risers so that makes me think something was off about it.

    Tallcann :Hopefully Cole stays with the 66ers for another week so we can watch him up here in Tulsa. Its about the closest I’ll get to watching a the thunder in person this year (besides preseason when they stunk up the BOK center). On that notion I wonder if thunder management has ever thought about bringing a regular season game to Tulsa. I mean isn’t 41 and odd number of home games

    The city has a clause in their lease with the team that all regular season and playoff games must be played in OKC. Sorry T-town...

    @Andy

    He is 6'9'' in socks, but more importantly his standing reach is 9' 3.5'', which is pretty dang good.

    Cole is definitely grounded, which is why I'd like to see him put on some more muscle weight. He's not a high flyer, he's a low post banger, might as well put some ammo in the trunk.

    @thunder tim
    Follow the other guys on twitter and you'll see they all talk about it all the time.

    something that's bothered me is how much talks about playing Xbox - how addictive it is and stuff. It might be unfair, but it makes me question his work ethic. he doesn't seem like a gym rat nearly to the extent like ibaka, KD and RW are. maybe he is, but his blog posts haven't given me that vibe.

    Didn't Simmons write that Aldrich measured 6'9 in socks? Do we refuse to get legit 6'10 or above players? I remember watching him at Kansas (OU student) and not for a second believing he could hang with the athletic bigs in the NBA. Dude just isn't coordinated, I think that drifting out of position is a physical limitation he will always have. I think his ceiling is a less coordinated, lower basketball IQ Nick Collison...

    No chance this happens, but can we import PHX medical staff and acquire Greg Oden!

    @Beast

    Not bad. I still like the Liam Neeson comparison more, but that's not bad.

    I wish that video+audio, from 4 seconds to 6 seconds, could be on loop.

    Hopefully Cole stays with the 66ers for another week so we can watch him up here in Tulsa. @What Me?
    Haha. Their children will be the biggest Athletic Freaks of all time.

    @andrew
    My bad for bringin' that up. It's the devil's advocate line of reasoning & thinking within me. But it's never a bad thing to have a post presence. Maybe we could actually get open shots by throwing it into the post, scoring, throwing it back to Cole, wait for the double, then kick out to KD for the open J. What a novel idea, SCOTT BROOKS!

    Additionally, what do you guys think of the Brooks/Kevin Connolly comparison? My friends & I think it's pretty close.

    @andrew
    You catch the All-Star game last year? Any pre-game shenanigans by D12? He can shoot from 3..

    I don't care about Cole developing an offensive post game. Do we really think that we are gonna run plays for Cole post ups? He needs to rebound, block shots, and finish at the rim for this team.

    Him developing a post game will be about as useful as Dwight Howard developing a 3 pt. shot.

    @Sammy
    That's a decent comparison.

    @Sammy
    Which, it should be noted, is still definitely a possibility. Przy had a very slow start to his career as well.

    I'd be absolutely thrilled if he turned out to be Joel Przy at this point.

    I have lowered my expectations about Cole to hoping he can become a 15-20 minute off the bench center.

    At some point, we are going to have to acquire a frontcourt player through free agency or trade if this team is going to continue to get better.

    As big as he is that hook will be unblockable and a nice little shot once he develops touch on it.

    come on Cole, prove all the haters wrong!

    I thought he looked gassed by the end of this game. I don't think it's an effort thing. Maybe he's not in shape? Maybe he has knee problems? Hamady N'diaye was muscling him around down the stretch, too.

    Something's gotta give for him to have an impact in the pros. He's either got to get quicker or stronger. Way too early to call him a bust, I agree. Still a disappointing start.
