Tuesday Bolts – 12.7.10

Kevin Durant on Scott Brooks’ benching of him: “I back him up 100 percent. I love Scotty. He does a great job for us, motivating us and always pushing us every day. So I’m just going to back him up whenever he does something … I want to be the best teammate I can be. I think I can learn a lot from what he did. I could be a better teammate. And that’s what I tried to do, spark my guys from the bench.”

Cole Aldrich on his D-League stint: “I thought I did well. I really wanted to focus on just a few things, not only keeping up my conditioning and getting reps in the games, but also staying low defensively. I wanted to see the floor a little more, react better and kind of just go out there and play a little bit.”

Darnell Mayberry: “I’m looking forward to seeing how Green bounces back from this one. After allowing Boozer to have a breakout game while going 1-for-9 at the other end, it won’t get any easier for Green. Kevin Love is up next, and David West is after that.”

The NBA bought the Hornets. And they could very well move to Seattle. What a weird twist for Oklahoma City people that so badly wanted the team.

Noam Schiller of Both Teams Played Hard on the MIP: “And who stands above Horford for 2nd in the league in PER? I’ll give you a hint: he plays for the Thunder and he isn’t Kevin Durant. Westbrook has taken his scoring to the next level by using his speed and athleticism to constantly get to the rim, where he either converts his shots at a career high 55.2%, or draw fouls. Russ is getting to the line 9.6 times a night (good for 4th in the league) and making his freebies at a career high 87% clip, combining with last year’s prominent leap-maker Kevin Durant to create the league’s most deadly foul drawing team. If he doesn’t make the all-star team this year, something is wrong with the universe.”

If you missed it: Russell Westbrook was named Western Conference Player of the Week again. This is the second time he’s won that.

The second printing of The Book of Basketball has the “What if?” on KD and Oden: “So what if the Blazers picked Durant instead of Oden? They become the fledgling Western Conference juggernaut of the 2010s (not Oklahoma City); Portland becomes a legitimate 2010 destination for LeBron; any successfully unconventional decision would be called “a Pritchard”; and everyone in Portland would be so perpetually happy that it would never rain there again. Instead, we have to start bracing for the 2029 or 2030 Draft, when Portland wins another lottery and finds itself stressing between Sure Thing Potential Superstar Scorer X over Possibly Fragile Franchise Center X as everyone else wonders, “Wait a second, we’re doing this again?” One of these generations, the Blazers will get it right.”

Jeff Green got the Daily Dime’s “worst” award for Monday.

Bulls by the Horns: “Of course, the Thunder were playing the second night of back-to-back games. And I should also note that Durant — who led his team in scoring with 29 points — played only three minutes in the third quarter…during which the Bulls outscored the Thunder 29-18 to take command of the game. That was the only quarter Oklahoma City failed to score 20+ points. Coincidence? Probably not.”

Nick Friedell of ESPNChicago: “Boozer’s mere presence on the floor created problems for an Oklahoma City squad that didn’t have to face him during the regular-season opener in late October. His ability to score down low freed up shots for his teammates on the wings. Kyle Korver and Luol Deng combined for 32 points. But, even more importantly, Boozer’s offensive prowess took some stress of Rose and Noah to provide continual offense. In short, he did what he was brought in to do on Monday night.”

holdmymartian :@Brew I hope your playing about that.

Yes sir, playing.

@Brew I hope your playing about that.

DizzyDai :@Brew@jon

Probably the wrong forum for this.

This isn't Huffington Post. My bad.

@Brew

@jon

Probably the wrong forum for this. :(

I think transparency is a good thing. 90% of secret docs are only that by classification. We all know it is happening if we bother to pull our heads out of the sand. War is a brutal business.

qrex :

DizzyDai :If Seattle gets a team, OKC would lose all the ex-sonic fans.

You talk like that’s a bad thing.

Thanks buddy. Love you too. Go Thunder. Ignorant fans- not so much.

@Greg

I wouldn't read anything into it one way or another.

@dwill
If we are making up stories how about this headline:

"Brian Davis fired, replaced by feces throwing monkey"

Presti quoted as saying, "The monkey knew more about basketball and complained less about the referees."

Thomas :@Mark!I think its interesting how resolute Durant is in his support for Brooks. If he’s that close to him it certainly might not be the best idea to can him as so many people are calling for.

This just in Mo Cheeks will take over for Brooks...Durant how do you feel??
"I really enjoyed working with Coach Brooks, he helped a lot in our maturity as a team. I know he will land somewhere and help a team out. Cheeky really has us focused going forward. We are going to keep up the Defensive intensity but we are working to refine some of our half court sets."
that's how it will go

Mark! :I think an overlooked item in the Bolts is that Durant calls his coach “Scotty.”

Good or bad thing?

I think an overlooked item in the Bolts is that Durant calls his coach "Scotty."

@DizzyDai
i agree, he does it well, krstic does it a decent amount too, green, durant, ibaka are horrible at boxing out, always use their athleticism to grab rebs, but it hurts us enough(cost us game 6 against lakers)

@f5alcon

Collison should be our could be our future box-out/rebounding coach.

while i like the fact that brooks was willing to bench durant and green to send a message, somebody needs to do the same to him when he calls iso plays at the end of quarters, or goes small and we get wrecked on the glass.

If we would box out i bet we could get 2-5% more rebounds per game.

@Thomas

I don't think the citizens are willing to pay anymore taxes. Unlike us Okies.

Mark! :@Thomas

No one’s moving to Seattle until they build a new arena. Once that happens, I imagine the NBA to return at the first opportunity.

What's ironic is that if Seattle would so something akin to the MAPS program that OKC did to build its arena they could both get an arena, an NBA team and stimulate their local economy in the short term during the building's construction and thereafter when the team brought economic activity associated with the games like we have in Bricktown. You'd think their city leadership would see this.

no wait... better yet,

Rapid City, SD

I can see it now -- the "Rapid City Rushmores"

Now that's a team that would be solid as a rock!

@jtshoopsblog
Won't happen because they won't build a new arena. They'd rather not have a team than build a new arena, as they've shown.

Fargo, ND

there's your next NBA town!

;)

@gr8ball83

The Chicago possibility intrigues me. I know they were talking about a second NFL team during the Olympic bids last year. Not sure about sharing the United Center, but a second team in another part of town could add a really cool dynamic to the NBA and the Bulls. Unless Donald Sterling's brother owns the team.

Any place would be better than where they r now. how about Seatle. they xcan use a basketball team. Rename them the Sonics and flush the Hornets away in nothingness where it belongs@shiki=4 seasons

@BrettM2
Yeah I don't see Seattle getting it. KC has that brand new downtown arena and the "revitalized" downtown area. My guess would be there, but I'm not sure if they can support 3 teams

Royce Young :

lengthy (and casual) conversation with Nick Collison here:
Hang Time Podcast (Episode 35)
not anything amazing there, but Nick’s always fun to listen to

I thought it was pretty interesting to how Nick conceded to the fact the team is winning by playing well late in games, but isn’t executing as well as he thinks they should.

yes, and comparing the team to his rookie team in Seattle with how everyone is on board with playing a role, except that this (Thunder) team has more actual raw talent

I thought it was interesting that he talked about how scary KD and Russell could be when they get some real help. His critique was that the current team just wasn't quite there on the execution and that our stars were essentially having to make their own plays. But when the team gets it together and really sets them up for shots, they're going to be (even more) amazing.

I think Nick really is excited about the future of this team -- and wants to be a part of that "realization" when it comes together.

I don't see how NOLA moves to Seattle. It still doesn't seem like the city/state are willing to dish out money for an arena. Obviously, Ballmer could step up and build it himself. If that's the case, everything is fair game.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kansas City get the team, not sure how they'll handle it with two other teams in the market already.

@qrex

Always a good reason.

I'd like the travel on our team better with that set up. Plus we'd be coming end toward the end of Duncan and Nowitzki. Not to say they won't make great moves to stay competitive, but I'd much rather be division rivals with their successor teams.

qrex :@shiki=4 seasonsBecause we want the Lakers as division rivals?

If they were in the same division who doesn't love that rivalry??

It is so interesting that Deron and CP3 in the same Division if Hornets move to NW

@BrettM2
My bad. It (the division swap) could happen if for no other reason than to irritate Mark Cuban.

@qrex
Interesting take. Of course, we're not letting Green walk for nothing in any situation. What could the Knicks offer (both in initial offer sheet and then trade options) that would make them the best idea? We could flip Green this year for more than the Knicks have to offer, so they would have to sign him to a cost-prohibitive offer sheet. And if they are going to do that, why not just dump their whole cap space on Melo?

@qrex

Lakers are in the Pacific. SW is Memphis, SA, Dallas, Houston, and NOLA.

@Andrew
I still don't think they are good enough to beat the Celtics or Magic in 2 straight 7 game series, and obviously Miami would be in that statement if they could work out their big 3 issues. I definitely think they are good enough to make the ECF, but they probably need a full year together before they really can hit on all cylinders against the best of the best.

@shiki=4 seasons
Because we want the Lakers as division rivals?

@dwill

@shiki=4 seasons

That would make sense. Seattle back in the NW and OKC in the SW.

If Hornets moves to Seattle,do they exchange division with thunder?

Off topic, but does anyone else think the bulls could make the finals this year? I do...

I noticed this on the comment feed (as a traceback?) but never saw it in the Bolts.

http://www.theknicksblog.com/2010/12/07/could-the-...

If Hornets go to Seattle do we switch divisions with the former NO Hornets??

@DizzyDai@gr8ball83

Yard Dawgz didn't get sold, they went under. The owner was looking for investors and couldn't find any, so he folded them. Barons do play at the Cox Center.

@DizzyDai
Funny you mention them, they were sold to a group in Seattle I believe, they played at Cox before that though.

@Andrew

I think so. We have a minor leauge baseball and hockey team, but they play elsewhere.

Where do the Yarddawgs (or whatever they're called) play?

Pretty disconcerting that we're 22 games into the season and have yet to see a complete, dominating performance from this squad. They've been close, but even against Minnesota and Golden State we let the other team make a late run.

Don't get me wrong, they've racked up some good wins--but I can't help but feel that we're closer to being mediocre than we are to being great.

@DizzyDai
I wonder how true that is. How many OKC fans still have a place in their hearts for the Hornets? And it's not like the team will suddenly change, so people following KD or Russ are still going to follow KD or Russ. I'm sure some will be lost, but it's not like they are forced to choose one or the other.

Andrew :Bring the NBA to Omaha! we have no pro sports teams…
How many tenants does okc arena have? Just thunder?

do the Barons play in the Cox?

@Andrew
Not a chance, sorry... KC is close though! Or it could be the KC-Omaha Hornets like it was the KC-Omaha Kings back in the day.

DizzyDai :

gr8ball83 :@dwillAnd they already have MLB and NFL, so much more of a professional market than OKC was before the Thunder

lol...i agree
