Thursday Bolts – 12.2.10

On Twitter last night, someone said at Kevin Durant that he’s the second best player on the Thunder now. Durant’s response: “I’m cool with that!” He also tweeted, “It’s all about wins at the end of the day plus he’s my teammate I’m happy whenever he plays well! I jus wanna win thas all.”

From ESPN Stats: “There’s no shame in barely missing a triple-double, especially when you have the kind of performance Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook had in a triple-overtime win over the New Jersey Nets on Wednesday night. Westbrook’s [38] points, 15 rebounds and nine assists made him the first player to at least reach those benchmarks this season. A check of Basketball-Reference.com shows he’s one of only two guards to do that since 1990, Vince Carter being the other in 2006-07.”

Susan Bible with a great Serge Ibaka piece: “Born September 18, 1989, in the city of Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, to basketball-playing parents, Ibaka, one of 18 children, lived through poverty with no electricity or running water, or even food, at times. By the age of fourteen, he had lived through civil unrest in his country, his mother’s untimely death and his father’s political imprisonment. The one constant was his love of basketball. He learned the game on worn outside courts wearing sneakers with cardboard inserts to cover holes in the soles.”

KD is expected to play Friday in Toronto.

Chris Sheridan of ESPN: “The focus afterward was on what point guard Russell Westbrook pulled off offensively in the third overtime, scoring all 13 of Oklahoma City’s points. What was secondary, but ultimately equally important, was the way he played defense — how softly he played it, actually — in the final 6.8 seconds of that third extra period. After Westbrook went to the line and scored his 12th and 13th points of the third overtime to put the Oklahoma City Thunder ahead of the New Jersey Nets 123-120, the Nets were out of timeouts and had to go the length of the court to attempt a game-tying 3. And as point guard Jordan Farmar (career-high 28 points) dribbled the ball upcourt just a teeny bit slower than full speed, Westbrook laid off him.”

Someone else making noise about Westbrook being OKC’s best player.

Westbrook’s lovely putback:

PBT: “It wasn’t the prettiest of wins. But without Durant, in a game they should have lost a few times over, you take it and don’t look back. Call it gutty if you want. The Thunder are finding ways to win, not unlike what happened last year, and if they really are putting it together the rest of the West should be worried.”

Nets Are Scorching: “But wait, there’s more ugly. How about the end of the first overtime, when the Nets had a chance to win at the buzzer and the best they could come up with on offense is a 22-footer from Lopez in the corner. Or the in the second OT, when Avery Johnson foolishly used the team’s last timeout with the team up three and less than 5 seconds to play, only to see OKC’s Jeff Green draw a foul on a THREE POINT SHOT by Stephen Graham (let’s not even get into the fact that the stupid shot almost went in).”

Darnell Mayberry: “There is no doubt in my mind the Thunder should have fouled Anthony Morrow with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation. The counter argument in that situation always is the risk of fouling a player while he’s shooting, as evidenced by Stephen Graham sending Jeff Green to the line in the second OT. But when Morrow put the ball on the floor, taking one dribble before hoisting his game-tying runner, that presented a perfect time to wrap up Morrow well before he could get a shot off. As exciting as this triple-overtime thriller was, it should never have gotten to that point.”

Russ, Maynor
Iguadola, Harden
Durant, Green
Griffin, Ibaka
Howard, Ibaka

I'll take that rotation and six championships please!!!

Just want to be a child for a sec....

Russ, Iguadola, Durant, Griffin, D. Howard.... take me to the promised land!!!!

I still think KD is the more valuable player, but I LOVE that we are even having the discussion. 12 months ago, some still thought Russ was unworthy of starting lol..... oooooops.

Glad you can't count me among them!!

For all of you who have some time:
Pleiss playing Euroleague right now. He had a good first half.

@Thomas

KD said this... “I just fell awkward, kind of sat on my knee a little bit,” Durant said. “My knee got caught up under my body.”

I can't find any mention of the drainage other than what was said last night. Remember the source was Brian Davis.

@Thomas
It's supposedly a light knee sprain. Fluid build up is fairly common with those and draining it helps alleviate pain and quickens the recovery process. At least I think.

How is KD's sore knee? They said on the Thunder post game show that he had the knee drained. I'm not a doctor but that sounded more serious than I'd initially heard if they were actually draining it. Anyone know if that's an indication of a long term problem in the making?

@Ozark

Thru the first 16 games, This Season vs Last Season

PPG = Points Per Game (TS%)
FGA = FGA Per Game
Other = (Reb + Ast + Blk + Stl - Tov) Per Game

PPG = 27.3 (0.544) vs 27.5 (0.557)
FGA = 21.2 vs 20.7
Other = 8.4 vs 9.4

@Ozark
He was pretty much a low efficiency chucker his for most of his rookie season (he was good in March/April), so it's hard to say whether he had a poor start. He started off shooting strong percentages in his sophomore year, but wasn't getting to the line very much, which hurt his ppg.

DizzyDai :

Sammy :Hey guys, I’d lay off the kid. It’s not like he’s on here trying to start a flame war. He’s a 17yo trying to do something fun and productive in his spare time; let’s not eviscerate him for it. His case might be poorly argued and his evidence not quite accurate, but who cares? His opinions in his little corner of the Internets aren’t hurting anyone.

Ditto. At least the kid is putting his thoughts out there. That’s more than what a few anonymous commenters are doing.

yeah, when I was 18 I started a blog too and it sucked incredibly bad lol

at least I learned a lot from it, this kid will too if he keeps trying.

KD started slow last year. Did he do the same his first two? I think he needs time to get into his groove. He actually started the worlds in much more mediocre fashion than he finished it.

Plus, he's had a few minor injuries that are probably bugging him, and with all the hype and pressure he might be overthinking things a tad.

@Sammy

Mullens is big enough and athletic enough to finish near the rim. He just needs to start catching those passes.

I really do think Mullens or Aldrich will replace Krstic by next year.

WannabeGM :@Bruno

Come on…he does a lot more than dunk. Offensively, he’s as complete as they come.

from what I've seen, Griffin is an awesome finisher, a great passer and is a monster in transition.

but still, he's shooting 68,8% at the rim, but only 43% over 10 feet, 45% between 10-15 feet and only 32% over 15 feet, and he's shooting free throws like Shaq, 58,5%.

also, he's the second scoring option on a terrible team, much like Bosh was putting up 24-11 for a terrible team and he's got 17-7 for the Heat now.

I'm also ignoring that he's a horrible defender and he's already lost a year due to an injury that he got by simply jumping for a fastbreak dunk, an action he does at least 5 or 6 times per game.

there's no doubt in my mind that he's a special talent, and if he keeps healthy he'll be a superstar, but he's way off what Kevin Durant can do when he's healthy and playing well.

Mark REALLY needs an editor.

Look at some of his articles... they're littered with basic factual and grammatical errors.

"The Dallas Mavericks just keep on winning. Now 13-4, Dallas routed the Mavericks and this game was not even close to what the final score indicated."

Better yet... don't check them out... the added page views will only encourage him.

@DizzyDai
The one thing I noticed when Mullens was on the court was his size and length really changes our pick and roll game. He's such a big athletic target rolling to the basket. That made me second guess his value a bit (which I had previously completely written him off).

So glad I keep coming back...

@Ann On a Moose
I don't think its a coincidence that the other player that was draining from 3 in the World's (Eric Gordon) is shooting like crap from 3 this year as well. Different size ball and different distance probably has them janky to start. He'll round in to form.

@DizzyDai
By the national media? Yeah, sure, I think most of us here are in agreement on that. The thinking that he would easily make the leap into best player in the league this year was ridiculous.

WannabeGM :@DizzyDai
Oh man, I couldn’t agree more. Want to see him play!!! He did well against Hibbert.

The crazy thing is Westbrook was passing Mullens the ball. It seemed like Mullens was completely shocked when that happened. I feel Russ and Mullens need more game time together.

@Mark!

No, Mark. Doesn't work salary-wise. :) LOL.

I find the handful of posters on this site that form an echo chamber quite hilarious. Constantly quoting and patting each other on the back.

"you're so right"

"no you're so right"

"you're more right"

"I completely agree with you"

"ignore the trolls"

so on and so forth :)

O RLY :In what way is KD in a shooting slump? His shooting numbers from all spots on the floor are nearly identical to last season. And spike, does the fact that he played basketball all summer for Team USA not count as a warm-up?

Playing all summer for Team USA on different size courts, under different rules, and even with a different sized ball. It'd be like Tiger Woods warming up with a round of mini-golf. Same basic priniciples, completely different game. And that also presents the flip side to the slow start this year... could it be some early season fatigue from such a big summer?

I do think KD has been overhyped just a smidge.

@justin

Seriously, justin. Pull your head out of last year. The only reasonable explanation for KD's play in 16 games this season is last season was an 82 game fluke.

Stupid homer.

Can we trade for Blake already?

So Royce, will you defend KD's honor and fight a 17 year old? Lol

@usher raymond
No one on here is arguing that RW hasn't been the Thunder's best player so far this season. What we are arguing is to look at the bodies of work over just these last 20 games.

@Bruno

Come on...he does a lot more than dunk. Offensively, he's as complete as they come.

The only reason the Griffin/KD thing is still alive on this site is due to the handful of blind homers on this site that refuse to acknowledge that it is actually something that might make us better in the long run. Obviously this deal ain't gonna happen ever, but the off-putting response from the ignorant posters has riled up a lot of the objective posters here

@Sammy

And your suggestion to ignore anyone that doesn't share your views is the best idea I've heard yet. Since typically you're one of the posters here that resort to name calling, the ignore option is a step up for you.

@DizzyDai

Oh man, I couldn't agree more. Want to see him play!!! He did well against Hibbert.

usher raymond :@justin
No, I won’t think about that. I will only think about what I see on the court this year. You’re welcome to live in last season though.
I know what I see this year and so does everyone outside of the Thunder homer bubble.

Jeeze... If these guys are homers, I hate to see the regulare fans comment.

@Sammy

Look...I was just a little frustrated with the endless love for KD here even though he really hasn't played well this year. A few days back, one guy here was called out (unappropriately) for calling Westbrook better than Durant.

Again, I DO NOT WANT KD TO BE TRADED, never. I love him as much as everybody else here. But I did mention that as great a guy and player KD is, he isn't playing well and we should never make him bigger than the Thunder. He himself obviously doesn't do that, so why do we? He is young and one of the very best players. But so is Westbrook. And Howard, and Griffin, amongst others.

Of course we are all in KD's camp. However, he's not superhuman. I said there are 2 players I would consider trading him for, simply because of the way the Thunder are built. And those 2 are Howard and Griffin. I didn't mean to disrespect KD. But we'd have Green at the 3 and a huge low post presence, which is the only thing we are lacking. That's all. KD is among the very best, so are they. Did I diss KD because there are 2 players he MAYBE could be traded for? I would never trade him for Lebron, for example. That should say enough.

I'm happy with KD, just like you and everybody else. But I love the Thunder even more, and with a trade like that the team would possibly improve. But since nothing like that will ever happen, it really doesn't matter.

GO Thunder, go KD!!!

Nevermind about Cole. I guess he hasn't played another game yet.

Sammy :@WannabeGM

It’s not totally ridiculous trade suggestion, but it’s just so unrealistic that I don’t know why it keeps being brought up.

and the fact that it's based in a stretch of 20 games, completely ignoring facts that happened as close as last season, makes it totally unreasonable, really.

I don't think it's ridiculous to propose a trade involving Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin, it's just that to gauge both players value people should be looking at more than "Griffin dunks a lot, he'll average 35 ppg easily and is already the best player in the league".

@justin

No, I won't think about that. I will only think about what I see on the court this year. You're welcome to live in last season though.

I know what I see this year and so does everyone outside of the Thunder homer bubble. We see the obvious fact that Westbrook is better this year than KD and it's really as simple as that. If Durant reverts to his last year mode (playoffs not included) this year then that would be fantastic, but it hasn't happened yet and so I will judge him accordingly by what he is doing this year.

WannabeGM :come on, let’s find something of a little more substance to “argue” about.

Howzabout Mullens? We always like to agrue about Byron. I still think he should get a little more time. Oh and by the way... any updates on Cole?

Where'd all the comments go?

@WannabeGM
It's not totally ridiculous trade suggestion, but it's just so unrealistic that I don't know why it keeps being brought up.

Sammy :@Keith

There are a few commenters that have been flooding the board with ‘Trade KD for Blake Griffin’ talk the past few days. I’ve been ignoring them.

yeah, you're the right one, I'll start to do the same.

KD's answer to the tweet just showed what a class act he is, he could have simply ignored it, but he decided to use it as a way to promote Westbrook.

@WannabeGM
MartzMimic agrees with you.

Lol. I'm already sorry that I started this Griffin/KD discussion, as I really love this blog.

There are people who would do the trade, there are people who wouldn't. Both are wonderful, young players - among the elite. Can't we just agree on that?

It really doesn't matter, as both players are absolutely "untouchable", just like Howard and Lebron. It's up to personal taste and opinion which of these guys you would want to have on your team.

OKC is incredibly lucky to have 2 massive youngsters on the team in KD and Westbrook. Everybody here loves the Thunder, and instead of worrying whether Griffin might be better, let's enjoy KD and Westbrook.

I'm sure both will stay with OKC for many, many years and that makes all of us happy.

Maybe we will get somebody like Howard or Griffin just because they might want to join those 2. That would be sweet.

There are more important issues like the lack of a C or the "Green/Ibaka at the 4" issue...come on, let's find something of a little more substance to "argue" about.

Wow, now I'm talking to myself on a blog. I guess it's only a matter of time before I start speaking in third-person.

@usher raymond
If you're going to pick the night he scored 19 points instead of saying he averages 28 pts or whatever on 21 shots, or whatever his averages are, then you should take a bad game from Russ to compare and not his averages. Obviously KD isn't playing great but thats not an accurate statement

@usher raymond

The difference between KD's scoring efficiency last year and Russ' this year was the difference between Russ this year and Russ last year. Think about that for a moment.

I completely agree with this exerpt from the link in today's bolts from buthegameison.com:

"Earlier in the year, I criticized Kevin Durant and stated that he is overrated and all of my major points still stand. He’s taking 21 field goal attempts a night to score 19 points from the field and still hasn’t developed handles or the ability to pass the ball. The fact that he is being considered for the MVP award is a joke. Just because he’s scoring the most points per game, which is a product of his ridiculously high volume of shots, doesn’t mean he is the best player in the league or even the most valuable player on his team.

No, that honor belongs to Westbrook. Westbrook isn’t just a scorer, he’s a full-fledged point guard that has gone from a project at the point to the league’s second best (can’t give the edge over CP3 just yet). Perhaps Westbrook can’t sustain this level of production for the rest of the year, but there’s really no reason to doubt that he will keep this up. Westbrook has put in the time to become a great all-around basketball player. As a result, he’s no longer a an athletic freak playing basketball, he’s a complete basketball player that happens to be an athletic freak."

justin :@Anonymous

At least he corrected the record.

Actually, now he just looks like an idiot who can't add. (5-4)+(7-3)=(13-6)?!?! I guess we should give him a break and wait till he graduates high school to test his addition skills.

@MartzMimic
Too true. It's good that I was out of the newspaper business (otherwise known as being no longer poverty-stricken) before I met mine.

What did attract her was my ability to operate an ATM machine one-handed while holding a palm full of vending machine mixed nuts in my other hand.

@MartzMimic
That's what won her over for me for sure. I said, "See that tiny little name in the paper there above the story you have no interest in reading? That's me baby."

@MartzMimic
I think you sell Mrs. Daily Thunder short. I have to think Royce had more than that going for him to even have a chance.
