A 40 degree win for the Thunder over the Kings, 102-87

BOX SCORE

Some games, there’s just really nothing to get excited about. Or upset about. Some games really are just kind of meh. Or as Stringer Bell would put it, a 40 degree day. Ain’t nobody got nothing to say about a 40 degree day.

And that’s pretty much how the Thunder’s 102-87 wins over the Kings felt.

The Thunder played decent offense, decent defense, rebounded all right, everyone played relatively well and in the end, Oklahoma City beat a team that’s now 5-19 by 15 points. Wipe the hands and get ready for Sunday against the Suns.

Obviously one thing to mention is the 12 missed free throws. That’s uncommon. Thing is with this team and the way they shoot them is when they miss ONE, I’ll catch myself going, “Oh GEEZ. Come ON!” I just get used to them walking to the line and stroking them like they’re nothing. Yeah, they’re professional basketball players. But free throws aren’t easy. I play pickup a lot and I’m HORRIBLE at free throws when we shoot for teams. In my career shooting for teams, I’m probably like a 30 percent free throw shooter. So it’s kind of easy to take the charity stripe for granted. Tonight was an off night. Simple as that. Now if the Thunder would’ve lost by a bucket, we’d all be throwing things because of the misses.

And really, the free throw shooting kind of summed up the feel of the game. There was a general lack of focus and intensity throughout, but OKC was just enough keyed in to keep a bad team at arm’s length the entire game. The Thunder never completely put away the Kings, but the game was never close either.

NOTES:

  • Give a gold star to Nick Collison for tonight. He was just terrific. His screens are seriously some of the best you’re ever going to see. He always makes great contact. He took two charges, stuffed the box score well (12 points, eight rebounds) and had a number of Collison-ish plays (or as I called them tonight, “Blue Collarson plays – clever, right?) where he would tip an offensive rebound out or get just a finger on the ball to keep the Kings off the offensive glass.
  • It was needed too as Serge Ibaka got in foul trouble as he had issues with DeMarcus Cousins. Ibaka still had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, but Cousins muscled Ibaka a lot in the post and got him in foul trouble.
  • Again, the Thunder bench overall was great. The unit of Maynor, Harden, Green, White and Collison again sparked two good runs for the Thunder. One in the second quarter and another to close the third. Maynor had his best game in weeks dishing out five assists. At times, it looked like he was running the offense better than Westbrook tonight.
  • KD was solid with 24 points on 7-15 shooting. His mini-streak of 25 -point games is done at eight, but Durant didn’t need to be good scoring the ball. I thought he looked more confident with his handle in this game than he has all season. He was crossing over, going behind the back and even dropped off two no-look passes (one behind the back) during the game. Another good assist total from Durant too with five.
  • All seven of Jeff Green’s 3-pointers were good, open looks. And when he hit his first one – on the seventh attempt – he had a look of “FINALLY” on him. Nine rebounds and five assists for Uncle Jeff. Another nice all-around game.
  • Russell Westbrook with 21 points and six assists. I thought he really picked his spots well in this one. Felt the flow, made good decisions.
  • Robert Yanders hit the big halfcourter last week that won him $20,000. And tonight, fans in the arena pretty much saw the opposite. The guy that tried probably airballed by 30 feet. And I don’t think I’m exaggerating. It was like he duffed a six-iron while also slicing it deep into the woods. Way short and WAY to the right.
  • Harden went 3-10 from the floor and scored 11 points, but again looked confident and aggressive. Good sign.
  • One thing I noticed in the locker room after the game that I just think is kind of funny was a couple players were looking over the box score and talking about it. I don’t know why that struck me as kind of funny/weird but we’re all so wrapped up in stats and how they did, it’s like we forget that they care a little about that stuff too.
  • I continue to be a fan of what D.J. White adds. I hope he stays in the rotation when Nenad Krstic returns.
  • The ball movement was again great overall. Four guys had five or more assists making a second straight game multiple players had big assist totals. Very encouraging.

The good news and probably the important thing is, the Thunder’s taking care of business on this homestand so far. Three wins by an average of 18.6 points is nice. A five-game win streak is nice. Five straight at home is nice. And a 19-8 record is definitely nice.

But the four-game homestand isn’t over. The Suns come in Sunday and are certainly looking for a win. The Thunder’s playing their best basketball of the season, but needs to take care of business again and protect the home floor. When the Suns show up Sunday night, the Thunder need to be on them like a 40 degree day.

Next up: The Suns Sunday at home.

Five-game win streak, and we all basically yawn. A sign of progress, if you look closely. Or even if you don't.

It was nice meeting Royce at the game and I happened to be wearing my "Go Green" shirt so it was great show of solidarity on my part haha.

I got great seat just behind the radio broadcast crew which is where Presti sits as well. He's funny to watch because at nearly every break some dude hands him a piece of paper with I'm presuming some advanced stats on it. He looks at it while twisting his eye brow with his hand for a while and then puts it right down and goes about typing on his blackberry. It was fun to watch him do that every single time. @hat do you all think Dalembert will get on the market next year?

Baby steps. At least Brooks is playing more than 9 guys. Even if it's just garbage minutes. I think the thought regarding finding out what Mullens can do is probably right. Free Cole Aldrich. Trade Krstic.

@Sammy
I really have no problem with this "develop Mullens" program. Kid played one year of college ball and has a long way to go. He may not have what it takes in his head and his heart to get it done, but I'm ok with putting him out there as much as possible if it doesn't hurt the team.

Here's a comparison of where we are this year compared to last year 27 games in. THIS YEAR (last year).

ORTG: 109.5 (106.4)
DRTG: 107.1 (105.3)

Offense:
eFG%: 48.6% (48.1%)
TOV%: 13.2% (13.8%)
OREB: 26.1% (27.8%)
FT/FGA: 32.7% (26.2%)

Defense:
eFG%: 49.9% (48.3%)
TOV%: 13.9% (14.4%)
OREB: 27.4% (27.7%)
FT/FGA: 22.0% (24.7%)

Our offense has started the year off much better overall. Three points better per 100 possessions. There is a small improvement in shooting efficiency over the start of last season and a decent improvement in turnovers, but the big difference is clearly the free throws. League average FT/FGA is 23.8% so we're way, way above that right now. Brian Davis mentioned in a game that we're averaging more free throws made per game than other teams attempt.

Defensively, we've been a little bit worse. Almost all of the difference can be attributed to opponent shooting efficiency - teams are shooting much better against us compared to the start of last season. We're also forcing less turnovers. Defensive rebounding is the most consistent problem this team has faced. We're sending opponents to the line less, though.

Pretty interesting. I like the direction the offense is heading right now. Defense has gotten better but it still hasn't been at the level of last year's start.

Awww... Poor Krispy.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're a better team without Kristic.

Mark! :
I have absolutely zero faith in Mullens to turn into anything. He’s athletic, but he always looks completely lost. Cole looked more comfortable in his limited minutes in his first game than Mullens looks after being with the team for over a year. It’s a BBIQ/feel of the game thing and Mullens is way behind. I have serious doubts he’ll ever catch up.

1000% agree with you. Mullins just does not look like an NBA player. Free COLE or send him back to D League for some more work. What good does it do anyone to watch him sit on the end of the bench and high five the players coming off the court?

GB :
Asked in the game thread, but asking here again. Is Nenad in town getting therapy on his back? We missed last night’s game, but he hasn’t been at any of the games lately. Usually injured players are at the games. So wondering what’s going on with his injury, not hearing very much about it?

Hopefully he's decided to retire.

Mullens sucked. Had two horrible post ups and a missed alley from Maynor. He did not look hungry. I dont care if it was garbage time he did not look like he wanted to play.

5th time out of 6 matches that the Thunder kept the opponent to less than 21 points in the fourth quarter.

this next week starts another difficult part of our schedule. 11-8 through end of january or better is a reasonable goal

@Mark!
I mentioned this in the game thread, but my theory is that the team is under edict to make a concerted effort to develop Mullens and give him as many game minutes as we can allow the front office and coaching staff to better evaluate what we really have in BJ. I think they're okay just letting Cole learn the sets in practice and let him get used to the system that way for now since we have more time with him. If we can develop Mullens into something useful, that's obviously a better asset than just giving up on him after a year in the development league.

oh my...

Serge looks a bit possessed here

I love this shot of Nick on a pick to let Russell shoot:

Collison clears defender for Westbrook

Especially the look on Collison's face. It's as if he's turning back to Russ saying "Hurry up and shoot! I can't hold this guy off much longer!"

Thought experiment:

If you could go back in time a couple of years, back to the night after the rookie OKC team just lost again and the record reached its horrific climax of 3-29... and then went up to a Thunder fan and showed them our current standings as of 12-18-10 (19-8, #1 in Northwest, #4 in the West)... what would they say to you?

Thanks for losing tonight Utah... really 'preciate that!

:)

I believe that's called... #1 in your division... OH YES!

I feel antagonized by Mullens' presence on the court. It may not be rational, but it's true.

I know Cole had some foul issues, but I never got the impression he was lost while he was on the court. The kid needs minutes, and it seems like we have minutes to give right now. Instead, Cole can't even get minutes in garbage time. How does that work?

Given that, the only thing Mullens is accomplishing right now is keeping Cole off the court. I'm not sure why. I guess Brooks wants to reward Mullens for working hard the last year? Who knows. All I know is we suited up 12 guys tonight and only 1 didn't see a single minute. Why did we draft Cole again?

These Northwest Divison standings make me smile:

1. Oklahoma City 19-8 (0.704)
2. Utah 18-9 (0.667)
3. Denver 15-10 (0.600)
4. Portland 13-14 (0.481)
5. Minnesota 6-21 (0.222)

Good win for the division crown.

for those who didn't check out the Crull interview with Westbrook, here are a couple of screenshots from the video showing Russell's massive hands:

Cousins is very talented but two things:
1) he is a complete brat at this stage in his career. Getting kicked out of practice? Grow up dude you're a professional now.
2) He looks very soft. I could see this guy getting overweight in a couple years if he doesn't stay hooked up in the gym during the offseason. He doesn't appear to be one of those guys blessed with a good metabolism.

@Royce Young
Whenever I play pickup we shoot threes. I always make them, but that is basically all i can do on a basketball court.

What I'm noticing a lot on the boards is the fact that the Thunder needs a big who can defend and rebound. But what about a big who provides all-around legitimate post presence with back-to-the-basket skills. I think that's why the idea of trying to snatch Nene away has been prevalent in trade "wish list" scenarios. But one thing I do notice is that sometimes our defense seems stagnant in our off games because the other teams know, quite obviously, that all our offense goes through RW and KD. Serge can nail the jumper, Nenad can nail the jumper, but who other than maybe Nick that can play with their back to the basket? What if there's a possibility of adding another PF/C who has solid offensive post-skills? Maybe try to steal the rarely used (because he doesn't shoot 3s) Hansbrough from the Pacers? Just food for thought, but sometimes I really wish the Thunder had a big with legitimate touch around the basket.

If you know what I mean.

I mean, I'm happy.

I'm not HAPPY!!!

I'm just happy.

A good "meh" win

@Royce Young
lol, i understand where you are coming from, i am not great either(too slow, slightly disabled.) But what if there is a blogger free throw competition? You cant let us down(in this imaginary contest i dreamed up)

@f5alcon
What you'll probably notice first, is that I'm not a very good basketball player.

@justin
i havent followed the suns this year, how has dragic been playing?

maybe we need video of royce shooting free throws and we can spot why he is missing.

Nash left the game tonight after colliding with Chandler. We might get a Nash-less Suns team this weekend.

DJ Whites defense is so much better this year. If he ever gets his jump shot back he can be a solid rotation player.

You don't shoot for teams from the 3 point line?

@Josh
No, I'm talking when you shoot for teams.

You shoot free throws in a pickup game?

He'll yea, we kicked ass! Just like a forty degree day....

@justin
cousins is very agile for his size, if he was on a team with a strong coach, he would be unstoppable

You pretty much summed up the game Royce. But I'm loving the picture at the top of the page. Its like Harden hits Udrih in the nether regions, but then, somehow, feels the pain (which shows on his face). Udrih looks like he's about to jump over the edge of a building. And DeMarcus Cousins looks like he's about to be pissed off about something.

Pretty much sums up a ho-hum 15 point victory. The picture is more interesting than the game.

DeMarcus Cousins is the most intriguing player from this draft. He's so talented everywhere except between the ears. Like a bigger Andray Blatche. Some of the things he does on the court are so weird and dumb like that one man fast break but just the fact that he can handle the ball that way with his size is crazy.

utahs loss means we are alone atop the division

i wanted to see cousins vs mullens

There should be a lot of thought put into what the team does when Krstic comes back.
