Tuesday Bolts – 10.12.10

John Krolik of PBT on KD playing multiple positions: “According to 82games.com, Durant played 6% of his minutes at power forward last season. During that limited time, Durant averaged 41.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per 48 minutes, and had a PER of 36.4 when he played at the power forward position. The sample size is far too small to be significant, but those are some promising numbers. Durant probably won’t play more than 10-15 minutes a game at power forward because of how much energy he would have to expend on the defensive end, but the Thunder will cause matchup nightmares when they set up on offense and Durant is on the low blocks or mid-post.”

Chris Silva on OKC’s versatility: “Breaking down every position on the court during practice is one thing. The coach is asking you a question, you’re giving an answer. The play has stopped and you’re literally walking it through. We’ve seen head coach Scott Brooks quiz Westbrook on the playbook toward the end of practices. But knowing where everyone should be during a game, all the while you’re reacting to defenses, players are trying to get into position, and you also have to be cognizant of the shot clock, is a completely different beast. Time speeds up. As coaches say, you have to read and react. And that sort of thing, Westbrook says, only comes with more repetition.”

The starting 2-guard spot is up for grabs. So who are you going with, Thabo or Harden?

I’ll be chatting on ESPN.com at 2 p.m. CT for the Daily Dime Northwest preview. So do join.

Royce Young of CBS Sports on Durant playing all five spots: “What’s the benefit of this for the Thunder? For starters, matchups. How does an opponent go about lining up against a group of Durant, James Harden, Green, Ibaka and Cole Aldrich? Or what about a linuep with Russell Westbrook, Harden, Green, Ibaka, Durant? Or the fact that Scott Brooks could potentially flip Durant from the point to the post on alternating possessions. That makes this Thunder team a tough group to gameplan for.”

I forgot to welcome in my other new TrueHoop brethren in the Heat Index.

Oklahoma City (not the team this time) is kind of kicking butt. And a lot of it is because of the Thunder. A story in the USA Today talks about how OKC is growing: “Former Hollywood producer Neal Nordlinger, raising funds for a technology venture a couple of years ago, was stunned when a partner suggested locating the start-up here in Oklahoma’s capital and leaving Los Angeles behind: “I said: ‘Are you blankety-blank crazy? Oklahoma City? It’s a cow town.’ ” That was then. Now Nordlinger is running a software firm here and preaching the virtues of the heartland — low costs, unclogged streets, friendly people. “It’s a dream here,” he says. “The selling price of a house here would not be the down payment on a house in L.A. … People in L.A. do something for you because there’s something in it for them. Here, they genuinely want to help you succeed.”

Some new pictures of the black KDIII. It looks pretty nice.

Road construction around the Ford Center (or whatever it’s called) is still bad and it doesn’t sound like it’ll be finished by the start of the season.

There’s a little DT online 2K11 basketball league forming. If you play XBOX and want in, post your XBOX name or add markallen0.

Also, you may have noticed the Bolts logo got a nice refresh for the season. Big thanks again to Colin Butler for helping out. Stellar work.

snacko1 for the dt online league

Over the last 5 years only about 1 team per year made the playoffs in the west shooting like the Thunder did last season or worse. Only 1 of the 6 got out of the first round. A better team eFG% would improve contender status greatly.

Thanks DeWayne! Go Thunder!

@DeWayne

@Working

thesportsanimal.com or if you have iTunes it's available in their internet radio section under WWLS-AM.

I know the game won't be streamed but anyone know where I can find a radio feed of tonight's game?

See you guys at the game baby!

With respect to Green and Harden starting, I'd say start them both.

The team has trouble getting into a rhythm early in games and I think it would help to have a little extra scoring punch early in the game to get things going.

Then, I'd rest them early so they can both provide bench scoring once KD sits down. Just my take.

Thibodeau is probably way underrated on the coaches list but he has to show it as a head coach. I think D'Antoni is overrated by some or a lot. Another year or two will make that clearer.

On his GM ranking, Prada way underrates Otis Smith, Ferry and Kupchak and probably overrates Morey. Ainge is probably too low. Presti is early to 4th place but I'll probably wait another year or two to say whether that is too high or low.

It is a tough division right now.

Prada's rankings make Brooks 4th of 5 in the NW division.

Also, got my opening night tickets today. STOKED can't even begin to describe it

TEAM THABO sounds better, but im on TEAM HARDEN

Health will obviously play a big factor with the center position.

@Greg
Agreed. I don't think we see any changes until mid-season, if then.

i wish it was open competition at all positions make green and krstic earn their spots, obviously durant and westbrook are not losing theirs.

What do you guys think the chances are that it's really an open competition between Harden and Thabo? I think Brooks already has his mind made up, barring any preseason blow-away performances by Harden, that he's not going to risk disrupting continuity unless the status-quo is failing to meet expectations. At this rate, I don't see any changes being made at the SG, PF, or C positions unless the team is struggling.

But we can only hope that the minute distribution will lead to increases for Harden, Ibaka, Aldrich and slight to moderate reductions for Thabo and Green.

@Casey

I'll send you a friend invite from markallan0

If anyone else is interested in playing in an online 2k11 league, you need:

* NBA 2k11 for X360
* an XBL account
* some free time in the evenings a couple days a week
* desire to play some games w/ DT posters

If you want in (or just more details), respond @ me w/ your gamertag and I’ll get the ball rolling. More the merrier.

I know a few of you have given me your GT already, but if I haven’t already added you on XBL (markallan0), please repost. Sorry I missed you last time. I’ll get everyone this time.

I’ll continuing fishing for participants a few more times this week before settling down to get things started in earnest. There will be more details when they emerge. For now, interest is what counts.

@Grolgar

Mustang Brewery is in Mustang Oklahoma. Maybe you're thinking of something else?

Sammy :@SammyMac-10 is ranked too high.

Maybe, but I definitely put him top 10. He is everything I'm missing in Brooks--as Prada says, "Biggest strength: Designs brilliant half-court offenses." His teams have consistently been the slowest paced or close and the most efficient or close. What he did in in 04-05 was miraculous. Letting him go was one of the biggest mistakes previous management ever made (I'm much more pissed at Wally Walker and Howard Starbucks than Clayton "Weasel" Bennet).

Jax Raging Bile Duct :Nice work by Colin. The drill down image is missing after the jump though. Might double check it.

I don't think I'm seeing any drill image. It looks like something is missing...

Jax Raging Bile Duct :@Royce Young
Oh! There it is. Maybe it was a cache issue with my browser. Sorry if that was a false alarm.
I think it’s funny; USA Today is a well respected newspaper, and that article was a good one, but their comments sections are filled with just as much drivel and nonsense as you’ll find. Makes me wonder why a respected establishment even bothers with a comments section.
(In case any of you happen to read through that article and wonder about that Coop beer – also in the slide-show photos – it’s definitely worth a try. I love their DNR. Another local goody is Mustang’s Wachita Wheat. It’s outstanding.)

I love COOP, especially the Horny Toad. But I don't think Mustang is really a local beer. Isn't it brewed in Wisconsin? The best local beers to enjoy during a Thunder game are COOP, Choc, and Marshall's.

Im surprised the road construction hasnt gotten any comments yet. Its REALLY bad. I tried going to Bass Pro last night, not only is all of Reno from the Ford Center til it runs under I40 is under construction, but so are all of the side streets. I ended up having to get back on I40, and taking 235 North to get downtown. Come gameday, its going to be a ROYAL pain

2k11 on the PS3 anyone?

@Sammy
Whoops, Adelman's fifth, not fourth. But still higher than I'd have him. I'd flip flop Sloan and SVG. I'd be okay with jumping Genrty all the way up to fifth. Mac-10 is ranked too high.

Mike Prada ranks the NBA coaches. Brooks comes in 10th.

Rick Adelman's a curious choice for fourth. I'd have Alvin Gentry ranked much higher.

@justin
Agreed. Other than mismatches at the point and wherever they play KD, the half-court offense doesn't have a whole lot going for it..... esp if the shooting is bad.

Moving KD around a bit and playing with different rotations should help some.... but the players also need some consistency in terms of their spots on the floor - particularly with a group of young guys.

Also tonight..... Blake Griffin will get time on Tim Duncan and Dejaun Blair (the best College match up/ROY contest that never happened).

I'll be watching that one for sure!!!

I don't think anyone will argue that our offense lacks the structure to succeed consistently in the half court against good defensive teams. Look what the Lakers did to us.

Brooks (hopefully) being more flexible about rotations could help a bit but a fundamental problem is that our offense is easy to gameplan against because it's so simple.

Anyway, I wish the game was televised tonight. I really want to see for my own eyes how Green/Mullens handle Randolf/Gasol.

My guess, of course, is not well. It might also be interesting to give KD some time on Randolf to see if he can really defend the post, or if he will only see PF time agaist stretch 4's.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Seconded
I don't want the team to lose its defensive focus, but it seems like they are counting on better shooting to improve the offense... along with jumps from RW and KD. And there is definitely some post offense potential going to waste. I mean, I don't expect Ibaka or Aldrich to score 15 pts each on the block, but they have potential to contribute more than hard screens and put-backs.

I just prefer our offense to have more structure. It sounds like the staff's idea of success in the half court offense hinges on playmaking, and that's as complicated as it gets. I suppose at a fundamental level that's really all offense is anyway - draw the defense, pass to the open guy. Maybe that system will work better now that we can legitimately spread the floor with shooters. We're a perimeter team offensively, and from the looks of our personnel, that must be the plan.

If we can be a top 12 offensive team this year, I won't complain too much. I'll just be frustrated when it doesn't work.

But I have that suspicion that every long time NBA fan has: half court offense wins playoff series more often than any other phase of the game. They say that defense wins championships. But if the two best defensive teams in the league met for the championship game, the team with a perimeter oriented offense loses most of the time.

@Clark Matthews
Now Clark, you're not supposed to point out any of our ironic cake-and-eat-it-too moments. Otherwise, how can we continue argue about these things if you keep making sense?!

Side note - Greg Monroe sure is looking good on the low block for the Pistons.

Clark Matthews :@justin
Yet any time he makes an effort to get offense at a position and you complain about the team being too small. #doubleedgedsword

That's just moving problems around, I'd like to see something in the offense that makes me feel like the players aren't just mostly winging it in the halfcourt.

@Clark Matthews
I think Justin has issues with how Green gets his offense, too, in addition to his defense.

@Royce Young

Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome. Lame chuckle, yes, but I've been reading your stuff almost daily since I was in college. Pretty cool to see the CBS Sports next to your name. I want to point that out to the DT audience.

DawgRyu for xbox league!

To begin the season, I say start Thabo. Then if they're able to get more offensive punch from the second unit you can look at making the move and letting Harden start.

Man I really hope we see more development from Durant's post game.... especially if he can pass out of the post.

see some of ya at the game tonight! Can not wait!

How come Brooks says in interviews 'we can score' like offense is an afterthought? That always bugs me.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Well that's weird...

Nice work by Colin. The drill down image is missing after the jump though. Might double check it.

@Bender
Just a lame attempt at a chuckle.

Royce Young of CBS Sports.... Nice... Why not say "Me on CBS Sports" instead?
