Russell Westbrook on First Take

Kevin Durant is the face of the team. He’s the star. He’s the recognizable guy.

But one guy on the Thunder has seen his star stock quietly rise over the past eight months or so. It started with a great playoff series against the Lakers in which NBA fans finally got to see Russell Westbrook’s skill, speed and athleticism. And over the summer, it grew more as the entire world got a peek as Westbrook’s ridiculous ability.

Now he’s appearing in commercials, getting his own shoes and today, Westbrook appeared on ESPN’s First Take and talked about his experience in Turkey, his favorite dunk (how could it not be the one over Lamar Odom?) and who the best dunker on the team is. Fun stuff.

Sammy :How is the team gonna manage the crowd tomorrow? Seems like an open scrimmage at a high school gym would be totally overrun.

Last year scrimmage was in Mid-West City's gym. It wasn't horribly crowded. But since we made the play-offs, I'm afraid this crowd will be a bit larger.

ok ... just watched the day 3 video ... drawing a blank though, who's the guard who plucked russ but was unable to stay in bounds???

If I go to Yukon to watch the team, do I get to meet Kelly Crull?

Training camp day 3 videos up at nba.com/thunder. Includes coverage of KD's game winner.

I love how James Harden's beard BUSTS it's way into the conversation. It's going to be an epic season.

I was kind of hoping the team theme this year was going to be big, bushy, 1980's pornstaches.

Training Camp: Day 3 News and Notes

PRACTICE NOTES
Date: 9/30/10 Time: 1:58 p.m.

If you plan on going to the Thunder’s open practice tomorrow evening at Yukon High, you’re in for a good show.

“It’s going to be intense,” head coach Scott Brooks said. “It’s not an All-Star Game atmosphere. We’re there to get better. We’re there and it’s going to be a legitimate scrimmage. Teams are going to be evenly matched. Hopefully the score indicates that. Coaches are ready. We’re getting our game plans together. We’re treating tomorrow morning as a shoot around. We’re excited about playing for a crowd.”

Brooks said that the assistant coaches will share coaching duties for the blue and white teams tomorrow.

Again, the doors open at 5 p.m. and the scrimmage should start around 5:30. If you need directions, here’s a map.

FROM THE SCRIMMAGE
The Thunder had another brief scrimmage on Thursday, and we were fortunate enough to see the final 10 minutes again.

Not only did we see the same amount of intensity as we did on Wednesday, but we saw Kevin Durant hit another game-winning shot (the score was 14-13). This time Durant hit a fade-away three-pointer from the left wing, which ripped through the net with 2.3 seconds left. Now, don’t go reading much into these intrasquad scrimmages. Remember, this was just the fifth practice of the training camp.

Still, it was a sweet shot. Brooks was asked if seeing Durant hit shots like those ever gets old.

“If it gets old to you, then you’ve got to do something else," Brooks said. "This is a great game. Moments like that, it should never get old. Russell has the ability to make big shots and Jeff, and down the line. We have guys who can do that. But KD has developed into making big shots throughout the game and he’s a talent. He works at it and it’s not natural. He makes it happen by his work.”

Equally as nice a move by Durant was the inbound pass he stole near the sideline. Durant was defending his man but he wasn’t overplaying him. When the inbound pass was made, he just used his length to poke it free….

I asked Brooks why the team started scrimmaging so early during training camp, as opposed to last year’s when Brooks said the team didn’t scrimmage until four or five practices in. Brooks’ response: “There’s knowledge. They know what we do. They know the strategy of our system but for the most part it’s the same. We just want to become better at doing it. That’s why we can move along faster.”

MORE TO COME
We caught up with the affable Cole Aldrich after practice to see how his first five practices have gone, and the Thunder rookie had some good things to say about his NBA learning curve, so stay tuned for a story on Cole….

We also spoke to training camp invitee Demond “Tweety” Carter after practice, so be on the lookout for something on him Friday morning. In case you didn’t know, Carter was one of the most heralded basketball players to ever come from Louisiana. He scored over 7,000 career points in high school – he played varsity in both seventh and eighth grade as well – making him the highest scoring high school player in U.S. history.

I love the fact that he was wearing an Oakland A's related tee. That's my fave MLB team.

notice how the dunk that he mentioned was "one of his first" dunks.
