Tuesday Bolts – 8.3.10

FIBA is silencing the vuvuzela at the World Championships. Bummer, because that could’ve given me something to tweet about at my other Twitter account.

Kemba Walker of the USA Select Team: “I definitely learned a lot from Russell Westbrook on and off the court. He would talk about the pace of the game or things I could do defensively. I’ve known Russell through a teammate of mine for a while and we had some great conversations.”

Kyle Weaver signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

We’re working on new shirts for this season and let me tell you, they’re fantastic. One is already more favorite ever.

A review of the offseasons in the Northwest Division.

One Bleacher Report writer has some advice for Thunder fans: “The Blazers were anointed as the next big thing a few years ago. Now the Thunder are being hailed as one of the best teams in the league right now and for the future. As a Blazer fan, I can tell you to never assume anything. I feel like a pretty big idiot now for really believing that Portland could make a dynastic run (although I still think they can be serious contenders in the West if Oden can remain semi-healthy). I advise anybody drinking the Thunder flavored Kool-Aid to not make the same mistake as I did.”

Art Garcia of NBA.com looks at future free agent classes: “Russell Westbrook: Locking up the multi-talented point guard is the new No. 1 order of business for GM Sam Presti in OKC.

SI goes in depth on the top 25 free agents for 2011: “While the Thunder locked up Kevin Durant to an extension as soon as league rules allowed, they have not done the same with their other top-five pick from the 2007 draft, versatile forward Jeff Green. Oklahoma City also has a negotiation with electrifying point guard Russell Westbrook on the horizon. Paying Durant was a no-brainer, but GM Sam Presti and Co. will face more difficult decisions soon enough.”

Somehow, Russell Westbrook wasn’t named one of the top five penetrating point guards.

Dime looks at starters whose job might be on the line: “Nenad Krstic (Thunder) — Rookie Cole Aldrich will challenge Krstic, who averaged only 5.0 rebounds last season and shot just 40.5% from the field in the playoffs.”

Top 6 Point Guards for Upcoming Season (My opinion)
1.) Chris Paul
2.) Deron Williams
3.) Steve Nash
4.) Russel Westbrook
5.) Derek Rose
6.) Rajon Rondo

I love Russell, but this isn't true IMO. Westbrook is exciting, but he's not quite there yet in regards to production.

In regards to penetrating PGs, I do believe Russ might have been shafted a bit. For a different perspective, here are the SF% (% of plays player was directly involved in that ended in a shooting foul) for some notable PGs. This shows, at least some, the player's ability to draw fouls (which 95%+ is from a drive) and get easy points.

Chris Paul - 4.6% (20 and1's, didn't play whole season)
Derrick Rose - 6.5% (33 and1's)
Rajon Rondo - 7.5% (34 and1's)
Tyreke Evans - 10.0% (49 and1's)
Deron Williams - 9.4% (48 and1's)
Russell Westbrook - 8.9% (48 and1's)

so yes, I would say Westbrook is pretty good penetrator.

Also of interest, if you like the rapper Wale at all KD makes an appearance on his mixtape that released today, with a track called “KD Shoutout” devoted to him talking shmit. Wale and KD both grew up in Prince George County, MD. And now they’re millionaires whatever, whatever. But what’s interesting is Wale gets KD to act a bit cocky, which is cool. The tape’s good by itself, too..

i love me some wale

Team was 25th or worse on PG shooting efficiency. But they'll just "develop" out of that, right? They'll need to; but whether they will, time will tell.

league "average"

Watson 51.7%. Ridnour 57.0%.

But the keepers...

Westbrook at 49.1 TS%, Maynor 49.2 in OKC, Ivey 52.7 last season but career 48%. All below league average. A weak point.

Rose's TS% a bit above 53%. Rondo 54%.
Again about 54% TS% is league for bigger minute PGs.

Nash tops at 61.5%. Paul 58.4% in an abbreviated season.

Livingston in Washington 58.2%.

Westbrook's TS% ranked 37th for bigger minute PGs. So all his frequent inside shots and free throws did was keep him from being one or two more spots closer to the very lowest. Only Stuckey, Jennings and Alston were lower.

Article that says Weaver hasn't signed yet.

Posted a couple of hours ago.

Westbrook's improvement from mid-range was slight and still well below league average.

Westbrook's TS% went from 49.0% in 08-09 to just 49.1% in 09-10.

His at the rim FG% went from 47% to 52.7%.

So overall except for at the rim Westbrook's scoring efficiency went down. If his FG% at the rim got to league average that would be quite helpful but unless he goes above league average FG% at the rim or gets there even more frequently or does better from where else (like even further edge from getting to the line) his TS% will stay below league average for bigger minute players (mostly starters).

Greg :
Anyone actually think Favre stays retired?

I hope not

As for frequency at taking shots at the rim, Westbrook was 2nd to T Evans and did so at twice the average rate for point guards.

After looking at the various parts of inside shooting you can also look at a summary scoring efficiency stat for all shots. The league average for PGs who play 25+ a game for TS% is 53.9%. Westbrook was at 49.1% last season.

The average FG% at the rim for PGs is 57%. Of 40 guys who played 25+ minutes a game Westbrook ranked 33rd at 52.7%.

But getting and making foul shots is another part of the bigger picture, as is the rate of success for drive and dish.

Maccabi Tel Aviv is gonna be nasty next year. Kyle Weaver and Mikhail Torrance are both legitimate D-league stars/NBA role players and should play a big role for them next year. Another reason for me to watch Euro B-ball.

Not Thunder news exclusively but really cool NBA news nonetheless: the new NBA Jams will only be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 as downloadble content with the purchase of NBA Elite 11.

So if KD being on the cover wasn't reason enough alone to check out EA's new title then this definitely sways me. BOOM SHAKA LAKA.

Had I been tasked to review the state of the NW Division, I believe my conclusions about the T-Wolves (and in particular, their management)would have been quite similar.
Hey, it's been the nearly universal opinion throughout the sports world that Kahn's moves have been strange, to say the least. However, I think the several Kahn supporters that found your article outrageous were missing the point. You were not attacking their fans or players, but instead questioning the strategy of their management.

@Royce Young

Anyone actually think Favre stays retired?

Sammy :Haha… I missed this@KDthunderup@greivisvasquez
)

I love that shimmy... I take my cousin (who has downs syndrome) to the games and he does the shimmy whenever KD steps to the line.... cute as hell.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

They are awarded no points, and may God have mercy on their souls.

Haha... I missed this

@WhereDaChicken: @KDthunderup where you get that lil shimmy at the line from?”(antoine walker and @greivisvasquez)

@Derrick, @MorganG

The word you guys are looking for is 'drivel'. Drivel is posted in comments sections of all the national sports blogs like Yahoo, CBS, ESPN, etc.

Drivel comes from all the Internet Hate Machine rejects who's applications were denied in the category, 'what you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.'

Royce Young :@DerrickYeah I don’t typically read them. It’s pretty rough.

They hate you but always seem to read your posts...i guess its a love/hate relationship

Whoa, Tyreke Evans. Dude took 8.4 FGAs at the rim last year. The guys in second (Rose, Stuckey, RW) only took 2/3s as many (5.6).

@Derrick
Yeah I don't typically read them. It's pretty rough.

@Derrick I noticed that too. It is not near as bad as Yahoo and ESPN message boards though. It was pretty funny how one commenter accused Royce of being a East Coast homer... if they only knew he was from Oklahoma.

Has anyone else noticed how abusive and disrespectful CBSSports commenters are toward bloggers. Ive noticed the same thing with Yahoo Sports too.

It would be a fun exercise to determine actual criteria for penetrating point guards. Dime is a fun magazine, but their criteria is usually unclear or muddled at best and their opinion is backed up by the eye-test and bro logic.

I see in the comments section of that article where a reader posted some stats he thinks may clear things up a bit. I don't know that he accomplished anything significant, that demographic isn't interested in quantitative measurements.

a la Rondo would be a great Lady Gaga song.

I think RW0 is a top ten pg but not top 5 when ut comes to finishing. He needs to work on that english a la rondo beforr he can crack that list.

Too bad on the vuvuzela. I still want to be one of 20,000 fans with a vuvuzela in the Ford Center on game day.

"Somehow, Russell Westbrook wasn’t named one of the top five penetrating point guards."

Is he as good as any on that list? I don't think so... especially if you're factoring in finishing as part of the criteria.
