Thunder to open at home against Chicago

August 3rd, 2010

According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, Oklahoma City is opening the NBA season October 27 at home against the Bulls. That means in the Thunder’s three seasons in OKC, they’ve opened at home each year.

Definitely an excellent opening night game that has high potential for national TV. The 27th is a Wednesday and ESPN typically broadcasts that night. A good matchup of new and improved Bulls against the up-and-coming Thunder makes for an especially intriguing opener.

The NBA will announce opening-week and other featured 2009-10 regular-season games for the Thunder and the rest of the league as part of a special  at 6 p.m. CT Tuesday on the NBATV. The full schedule will be released Aug. 10.

ThunderMail: How do I get my wife to like the NBA?

August 3rd, 2010

You know why people like doing mailbags so much these days? Because it’s content without having to really think. The readers come up with the topics and all you have to do is just answer the question. It’s brilliant!

I get a handful of emails each day and I do my best to answer every one of them. Mainly because I still email writers I like with questions and it makes me sad when I don’t get an answer. So I say that in order to say that I apologize to anyone who’s answer I didn’t grab. I received more than I expected and I didn’t think anyone would really be up for a 15,000 word mailbag here. So I’ll file those away for next time.

Anyway, your letters:

Q: Not sure if you can answer this, but I thought I could give it a shot. How do I get my wife to enjoy Thunder games with me? She refuses to watch the games and always tells me she’s not interested when I acquire Thunder tickets. Sigh! Is there any surefire way? I’m trying to ease her into it for next season by talking about it constantly, not sure if it’s working or not. Probably not. Thanks for reading, and more importantly thanks for writing!

DT: This is something I’ve been really lucky that I don’t have to battle. As you all probably know, my wife absolutely LOVES the Thunder and enjoys following the team almost as much as I do. Actually, she may like them more.

The reason why? She loves the players. She doesn’t care so much about basketball per se, but she cares about the team, if that makes sense. So I would pander to that emotion. See if you can get her to connect to KD, Russ and Jeff Green. Have her watch some Broingtons videos. My wife just loves how together they are. The NBA itself isn’t necessarily a ton of fun to someone that doesn’t love basketball. But I’ll go see a movie with Harrison Ford in it even if it’s a chick flick and I know I’ll hate it, just because I’m a fan of his.

I asked Mrs. DT her thoughts on this and here’s what she added: “Well you can start by not talking about it constantly. I’m sure everybody is aware I am married to an NBA writer and basketball is a major topic in our conversations. Talking about it al the time is probably turning her away from the game. I started loving the Thunder because of my love for Oklahoma. The way we acquired the team was less than ideal and I hated hearing people talk about my home state the way they did. I decided I didn’t really care about the Thunder, I cared about making them succeed. If they succeeded, Oklahoma succeeded. The only way I thought I could help was to go to the games and support them.

I actually didn’t care for the players at first (I’m supposed to cheer on a Longhorn? Umm, no.) until Royce started a Twitter account for Daily Thunder. He would tell me about the things KD, Russ, and Uncle Jeff would say to each other and I soon realized it was like listening to Royce’s friends having a conversation. I think that’s one of the reasons he loves them all so much too (no homo). I started reading what they were saying to each other and soon fell in love with the players. Then Broingtons came to us like a gift from God and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Also, tell your wife this: the great part about the NBA is the time. It is almost always over in 2 hours-ish. That is a short amount of time compared to your trips to the mall.” Read more…

Tuesday Bolts – 8.3.10

August 3rd, 2010

FIBA is silencing the vuvuzela at the World Championships. Bummer, because that could’ve given me something to tweet about at my other Twitter account.

Kemba Walker of the USA Select Team: “I definitely learned a lot from Russell Westbrook on and off the court. He would talk about the pace of the game or things I could do defensively. I’ve known Russell through a teammate of mine for a while and we had some great conversations.” Read more…

The burden of expectation

August 2nd, 2010

Anytime training camp and preseason can be seen on the hardwood horizon a certain level of excitement begins percolating throughout a franchise’s organization, the team and the fan base. And that excitement is usually directly proportionate to what level of expectation all three groups have for the team in the upcoming year.

And as commenters justin and Kivman discussed recently, the expectation to succeed and win at a playoff-caliber level will be entirely new to this team and their fans. In fact, you could even argue that this upcoming season will be a better determinant for if the Thunder will compete for a spot at the top of the NBA’s pecking order for the next five-to-six years (at least) because being an elite, championship contending team means having a target on your back.

Last year the Thunder was the surprise of the league in terms of exceeding expectations, a fact accentuated by Scott Brooks winning Coach of the Year. No one, especially not the fans, expected the team to make the playoffs, let alone be only five games back from the number two seed when the season ended.

Everyone except the players. But, honestly, I thought they were crazy. “3-29?! And they expect playoffs?! Oh don’t do that to yourselves.” I’m sure almost everyone thought something similar last year when they heard Durant discussing the team’s goal in training camp.

And it’s this unique dynamic between a team’s belief and the expectations placed upon them by their fans and their competition that can make or break a season, influencing if the year was considered a success and that a team’s future is bright, or if the year was a disappointment and everyone heads into the off-season with a sour taste in their mouth. Monday Bolts – 8.2.10

August 2nd, 2010

Want to work for the Thunder? There’s a job opening right now for Website Publications Coordinator. Go go go!

Darnell Mayberry gives reasons why CP3 isn’t coming back to OKC: “At this point, any desire to see Paul in a Thunder uniform is a clear lack of respect for Russell Westbrook. Management affirmed its belief in Westbrook by passing on Ricky Rubio in the 2009 NBA Draft, and last season Westbrook promptly squashed the “is-he-or-isn’t-he” debate over whether he’s a point guard. After putting together the best playoff performance of any Thunder player, Westbrook now enters his third season  well-established as one of the league’s best young floor generals.” Read more…

Thunderground Radio, Ep. 12: Life after a superstar

August 1st, 2010

Anyone else tired of the 24 hour coverage of Dez Bryant not picking up someone’s laundry on local sports radio? Me too, so let’s talk some NBA/professional basketball. This week we look at life after a superstar, what does a franchise do once they lose their core piece and how does a franchise avoid losing their own all-star players? We talked to ESPN TrueHoop bloggers Zarar Siddiqi (Raptors Republic) and John Krolik (Cavs: The Blog) to get the scoop.

The interview with Zarar was informative and included a ton of Thunder talk, unfortunately the audio on our Cavs interview was very poor so we’ve got a quick recap of what was said in the discussion. In this week’s edition of “What Up With That?” we take a look around the NBA and Thunder organization including: Miami jersey’s at an Indians game, Team USA, Bosh dissing Canada, Mike Winger’s signing and of course KD’s tweets. Subscribe, listen, and comment!

Episode Breakdown:

  • 00:00-02:40: Introduction
  • 02:41-11:42: What up With That? (MIA Jersey @ CLE, Team USA, Bosh, Winger, and KD’)
