Monday Bolts – 8.9.10

An outstanding feature on Latavious Williams was on Outside the Lines recently. We all know his story, but it really continues to be interesting.

Darnell Mayberry on OKC’s newfound celebrity: “No matter the language, though, the message is being delivered. The Thunder is the new “it” team. Oklahoma City might still trail the L.A. Lakers, and now Miami, as the most glamorous outfits. But the Thunder has climbed atop the NBA’s shortlist of sweetheart teams, franchises from which the league chooses a face and ensues to flood promotional spots with throughout the marathon season.”

NESN.com with a Thunder outlook: “The Thunder have it made. They have such a young, talented nucleus in place that they’re loaded for the next decade — but they’re also ready to win right now. Durant is too good and too competitive to settle for first-round playoff exits forever. He’s going to be ready to take that leap soon, and he’ll carry his teammates along for the ride. If Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green and James Harden can prove they’re ready to be winners too, great things will happen in Oklahoma City.”

Art Garcia of NBA.com on OKC’s increased exposure: “Oklahoma City finished the regular season 50-32, a league-best 27-game improvement. Durant became the youngest scoring champ in league history. Scott Brooks won Coach of the Year. They took the Lakers to six thrilling games in the first round. Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green are currently finalists for the USA Basketball national team in the upcoming World Championships. That’s momentum. That’s the reason this team is going from forgotten stepchild to TV darling.”

A pretty terrific mixtape of KD at the Goodman League:

Tom Ziller on KD’s rap performance with Wale: “If they held championships for summertime PR, Kevin Durant would be a clear winner. He signed a max extension with Oklahoma City quietly just as LeBron fever was reaching its peak; when the media world subsequently lavished praise on KD for his exquisite humility, Durant said he didn’t deserve that special attention and proved his personality was even more wholesome than everyone had thought. How humble is Kevin Durant? He can even come off as modest on a rap record, that touchstone of athlete self-confidence. The producer, DJ Omega, is practically begging Durant to pound his chest a little, but KD holds off … for a while. Eventually he lists off his resumé, said with supreme but controlled swagger. It’s just like KD’s game: measured and decent until it’s time to make a statement.”

The full NBA schedule comes out tomorrow. Finally, something real to write about. You can bank on some overcoverage of it.

A feature in the Lawrence Journal-World on how big money isn’t changing Cole Aldrich: “As the No. 11 pick in the 2010 Draft, Aldrich will make approximately $1,772,100 during the 2010-11 season, $1,905,000 in ’11-12 and $2,037,900 in his option season of 2012-13. He also confirmed he’s about to sign a deal with a shoe company — he didn’t reveal which one — in the next couple of weeks. “I wouldn’t say I’m rich yet,” said Aldrich, wearing a simple T-shirt, shorts and sneakers. “I’m the same guy I’ve always been. I’m here at Goodcents, having a little fun interacting with the fans who gave me so much the last three years. It’s been a blast being back the last few days.”

The price for Oklahoma City Thunder license plates have been cut but they won’t start production on them until there are at least 100 pre-orders. That means at least 100 people haven’t made the commitment to adorn their vehicle’s identification with the Thunder. THAT’S NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The new commenting system is up and running right now and I’m going to test it for a few days. Any feedback on it would be lovely.

Plus... I will have to change my wonderfully original moniker and everyone would think I'm a newb

For the sake of traffic, I'd say stick with the old system. One of the great things about this system is that you don't have to be a regular forum user to come in and comment.

Not everyone has a wordpress or want's to use their FB or Twitter accounts to login and chat it up. During the trial, I was able to login, but the thread said it was closed. I was never even able to comment yesterday.

Obviously, I'm dedicated and would make sure to find a way. But, the average user would just give up and move on.....

Just my two cents. I agree the new features would be nice, but not if it's going to cost the site valuable traffic.

Here's some new video of James Harden and Byron Mullens talking about what they have been working on in the their games over the summer:

Jax Raging Bile Duct :The thing I don't like about the threaded system (other than searching for the location of the newest comments) is that people don't use it. The 3 posts previous to yours for example, are all about the threading system, yet they are all separate threads themselves (for a bit of irony).

I haven't gotten a feel for the new system yet. But always see the old system first. Perhaps people just need time.

Brandon: It WAS different. But I notice that the comment I added, specifically in reply to someone's earlier comment, is now on a separate page, with no indication that I was replying to anyone.

this is just a test of the new comment section.. so far, nothing is different.. i'm confused..

I think I can roll with it whatever you decide Royce. I'd probably give it a few weeks or at least a week and see how it works when you have a real hot topic with 200 or more comments and a heated healthy debate.

I fear change, especially when it comes to things I already love. I'm sure I'd get used to the comments this way, but at the moment I'm a little confused trying to find which comments are actually most recent and where the conversation has been going as a whole.

Yeah it would help if the sort order would be "most recently updated" thread rather than "most recently created."

The sorting for now doesn't let you know if an older spawned discussion has been active.

Can the new comment system make it so the branches are collapsed by default (well, except you can read the message of the first branch)?

Most of the comments are back and forth dialogs between the exact same people over the exact same tired subjects. Like someone posts that they like a player and someone posts that it's foolish to like said player for X, Y, Z reasons.

These pointless debates made old thread format difficult to manage. But this new format doesn't really help since all posts are visible by default.

I'd rather just see the origin branch, who replied, and the # of replies to see if there are any relevant comments to expand.

I notice that it show me logged in as MartzMimic with my Twitter account, but shows my name instead.

How quickly can I vote no?

Did it also kill the mobile version?

I'm a big fan of the new system; hope it stays.

I vote no on the new system- along with any other Thunder related changes that don't replace Kristic as our starting center.

Once everyone gets used to threads I think it will be great. For example, If someone does not want to read another Jeff Green debate or whatever, they can go down past that thread.

I don't love threaded comments because I'm definitely not used to them. But if the majority does, we can hang with it.

Again, this is really kind of a test run to see if it's worth it. It might not be and I'll go back to the old one.

Sort by 'Newest First'.

I am sure that the 3 previous post were not directed toward each other. They and I were basically giving feedback to Royce. The reply button is for when you are posting directy to that person.

Here's one for the "I don't like this about it..." file:

I don't like having to push the "Load More Comments" button to see the latest comments once it gets past a certain number of comments (I'm guessing like 30-40), any way that can be changed?

It will be interesting to see how it works during the course of a game thread or something with hundreds of replies.

You're right. That'll be a headache...

Let's hope so; though I find it's common everywhere where comment threads are used.

I think that's more about getting used to the new system than an indicator of future use.

Newest First doesn't work that way for me. All it does is sort the replies in reverse chronological order - they still remain underneath the initial thread.

I like this system better. Thank you, Royce.

Select "Newest First" and I think both new posts and new replies to old posts appear at the top.

I'd say it should be easier for the Thunder to win 60, though both may be difficult. Factor in a year's offseason growth, a few games of international experience, some improvements at depth for a few positions, and a few West All-Stars bolting for the East (which should make for an easier schedule) -- and even allowing for more injuries, it's not crazy to see a path to 60 for the Thunder.

For the Heat to win ~90% or more of their games, on the other hand...that would require ANY team to avoid too many injuries, too much drama, etc. Even that great Chicago Bulls team couldn't limit their losses to single digits. They also weren't hated as the Heat will be. They'll get everyone's best shot, and they'll face hostile arenas the league over. Plus, who knows whether this three-star dynamic with very little support will actually work? If it does, and if they can avoid injuries and distractions, the Heat has a real chance to win 73 or more. But I just don't think they have very good odds of all that coming together.

I think the Gravatar tracks by the email you entered, but you're only seen as a guest here, not a WordPress member. Hover over your avatar and you'll see "guest". Log in with one of the major accounts and you'll see that particular login. If there is a way to login with a Wordpress account, I'll gladly delete this Disqus account.

The thing I don't like about the threaded system (other than searching for the location of the newest comments) is that people don't use it. The 3 posts previous to yours for example, are all about the threading system, yet they are all separate threads themselves (for a bit of irony).

How do I upload an avatar to my profile?

I really like this new system. For those who are posting to each other, it allows the post to be at the same place. This is diffently an upgrade.

I'm liking the new threaded system

I like threaded a lot better. There is the disadvantage of not knowing when there is a new comment, but I think the benefits of having better converstations that people can follow outweighs it.

I hope that wordpress gets the same feature as SBnation, where you can see when comments are new, even if it's a threaded reply. IMO, SBnation has the best commenting system and blog system out for there for the community to interact.

I don't think the Heat will win 72 wins this season (I'm thinking mid 60s actually), but I can definitely see them approaching that number in the next few seasons after they use the MLE and LLE to fill out their roster with more quality roleplayers

Yeah, I didn't see a sign-in option for WordPress, but I signed in using that email account anyway. At first, it didn't have my avatar, or my name link, but after about 20 minutes it picked it up after all. I guess I just wasn't being patient enough.

Meh .. I think I like the other one better. Just my 2 cents.

The wordpress recognized me, and somehow my Gravatar is still there. I just had to do a first time logon with my email address. It should work for you I would think.

They don't have a rookie course? I think the NFL has a fairly extensive seminar that all rookies have to attend.

I am a fan of the new system for now...

Wouldn't a "dislike" button be better? I mean, who are we flagging annoying posts for? If it's not spam or obscene, who are we alerting? Maybe a dislike button is too rude for DT, which is fine by me. I've never clicked any sort of button like that on any site anyway.

im using my yahoo! openid, but wordpress should work.

http://openid.net/get-an-openid

wordpress is on there

"Disqus" is new to me. I created an account. Posted a comment. Deleted that account and my comment was automatically deleted here. Interesting... Then I created a new account. I think I'm set now.

What user account is everyone using to log in? My WordPress account is not recognized, so I'm posting this logging in through twitter.

The NBA should provide financial planners to the rookies so they learn how to not blow all their money when they retire

I dont see it happening. Phil Jackson made a point that one reason why the bulls were able to win 72 was because they were geographically in the center of the country. They had minimal issues of jet lag and long coastal trips. Plus, if the heat were smart, they would do what the celtics did with their big 3 and rest them as much as they can for the playoffs.

Now, with the "flag" feature, we can flag those damn annoying whiny know everything Laker fans that come on when we play L.A.
