Monday Bolts – 8.16.10

I’m sure you already saw it, but a panel of 93 ESPN voters say KD will win the MVP: “KD’s 2009-10 numbers (30.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and a 26.23 Player Efficiency Rating while playing all 82 games) were good enough for him to pick up 609 points in last season’s voting, in which he finished second to LeBron (and just ahead of Kobe Bryant). But with Oklahoma City predicted to finish second in the West, almost half of our crew of 93 believes it’s the young gun’s award to lose, especially with James taking his talents to South Beach, where he’ll share the ball and spotlight with Wade and Bosh.”

Ziller on Team USA’s current situation: “Some have criticized Coach K for cutting Green and McGee instead of one of the team’s five point guards. The McGee cut, in particular, means that Odom will be playing plenty of center, as will Kevin Love potentially. Krzyzewski had mentioned Durant there. Competitively, it’s a dice roll. But stylistically? It’s brilliant! If Scott Brooks had announced to the world his OKC team had so much depth at guard and so little depth in the frontcourt he was starting Durant at center, the coach would win a Nobel.”

Coach K suggested KD is being too unselfish: “They look to him all the time,” Krzyzewski said after Friday’s practice at the Knicks’ training facility. “They’re OK with Kevin shooting. If he misses, they want him to shoot again. They know. They’ve seen it.”

Coach K talking about Durant to Dime: “Kevin Durant HAS TO BE on the team. Whether everyone comes back or not. … Some people explode on the scene. Kevin actually, he was there for all the Select team stuff — he almost made the team last time so that’s an interesting — it’s an evolving process. It’s not like filling in one spot for a particular team, so that’s why Jerry Colangelo came up with this concept of a pool. So that when 12 guys are selected, it’s not like somebody didn’t make the team — these are the 12 we’re taking from the pool.”

The New York Times with a great feature on Kevin Durant: “Durant is so grounded that Oklahoma City Coach Scott Brooks said Durant traveled to the N.B.A. Summer League in Orlando, Fla., just to bond with his future teammates. While other elite N.B.A. stars were making movies and taking vacations, Durant worked out every morning at 6:45 a.m. and cheered on the Thunder rookies and some future Development League players. “That’s not abnormal behavior,” Brooks said. “That’s normal. If he didn’t do that, we’d think he was changing. But he works like that every day.” Brooks said Durant’s demeanor was so down to earth that he understood why people may have a difficult time believing it. He said Durant treated the equipment manager and the trainer in Oklahoma City with the same kindness and consideration that he treated the coaching staff and front office. This attitude comes as no surprise to USA Basketball officials, who said Durant was the only American player to attend each of the team’s training sessions for the past five years.”

Another story on KD, this one from the Boston Herald: “NBA fans have come to accept that great players have great egos. This is not a league that celebrates the modest, the low key. Rather it is a league where over-the-top rules, a league where free agents demand to be courted like Hollywood starlets. That’s why it has been so fun to watch Kevin Durant practice with Team USA this week in New York. Durant is an emerging superstar, and by far the best player on the squad that is headed to Turkey at the end of this month to seek its first world championship since 1994.”

Darnell Mayberry on Russell Westbrook’s progression: “The other major improvement in Westbrook’s game was his mid-range jump shot. Westbrook’s total shooting percentage last year was just 41.8 percent, only percentage points above the paltry 39.8 percent of field goals he connected on as a rookie. But anyone who looks beyond stats can see how much better Westbrook became as a free-throw line extended shooter. That new skill helped transform him into an almost unstoppable performer down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs, as defenders had to now respect his pull-up jumper as well as his ability to dart to the basket.”

Just bold and italic came through. I really wish we had preformatted text available for tables.

Back to the old comment setup I see.

looks like 'melo isn't going to reup with Denver...any interest in renting him for a season?

I don't comment much. I didn't realize it was still possible to comment without logging in, and the facebook ap is broken.

I hate our local sports radio.

I caught myself listening, something I resolved never to do again.

Tramel and Traber were talking about how Green likely won't be back on the team next season because he's going to get "Carmelo" money. I think the insinuation was he would be next in line when someone misses out on Melo. They thought he was going to get around $15M (not even possible under the current CBA). Low end estimate around $13M.

I guess they think really highly of him. And not very highly about money.

Local sports media here is so rotten. Darnell pulls articles out of thin air and the Sports Animal still hasn't hired someone to talk basketball. Pinto is great... wish he could host more often.

Cook does seem to be a good athlete. He seems a lot like Courtney Lee that was just traded to Houston; only with a smaller college resume. He shot great from three one year, and fell back to earth the next. Where does he fall for his career? Who knows?

I do think that there is the possibility that with D-Wade in Miami, that Cook was basically told that his game is to shoot the corner three because Wade was going to get most of the rest of the touches. To me, I see the possibility that Cook has a better, more complete all around game that might include the ability to drive, the ability to do more things with the ball in his hands (like J.Hard), the ability to pass more and an 'in between game". I think we may see more in preseason...but no guarantees.

Like I said elsewhere, I think Presti saw a guy who might be able to fill in for Thabo or J.Hard if there were an injury, and allow the team to flow without disruption. A guy who can defend a bit and hit a few shots.

All good points; hard to disagree here. I am thinking that with a busting full roster, that the move simply provided a guy who, in the case of an injury to Thabo or J.Hard could step in and do some of the same things as the guy he's filling in for and allow the team to still flow.

That, and it allowed us to move around in the draft and get Cole .45

@Mark Aldridge
That just makes me sad.

I guess if you remove his rookie year as it just being "a normal rookie year," then sure, his stats are skewed by last year. However, his rookie year wasn't special for a shooter no matter where he was picked. 33% from 3 and 38% overall isn't a good year, even for a rookie. Just because he was the 21st pick doesn't mean he has to be a poor shooter. Now, if he had been in the high 30s from three in his first year, I would have no problem saying that he is a much better shooter than given credit. But right now, his "good" second year looks as much or more like an aberration than a representation of his "actual" ability.

I would love for him to bounce back and hit near 40% from three, I'm just trying to show that Cook being young and a supposed shooter is more reputation than substance. I don't see Cook staying around past this year because he just isn't that good of an NBA player.

Dequan's rookie season was about right for a 21st pick. He showed more promise in his second year. He had an atrocious 3rd year. If his 3rd season was similar to his 2nd season, he'd look much better career-wise.

I'm not hellbent on proving that Cook is a lights out shooter. He's not going to beat out Thabo or Harden for the SG job. Your first post pointed out his career numbers, and all I wanted to do was point out that those are skewed south because of his one poor year last year.

In any case, average midrange shooter or not, he's got a good 3pt shot. He had a bad year with some minor injury trouble. I'll be interested to see if he can bounce back and hit that long ball again. I hope so, we could use another one of those guys.

Hey! We do have access to formatting!

If he is that good of a defender, that would be great. A near Thabo-level defender with a three point shot would be tremendous. Of course, it also says the quality of opponent faced was almost 10% worst than a league average player. To put it in perspective, Thabo was matched against the best perimeter player each game, and his quality of opponent was 15% ABOVE league average last year (and will probably be the same this year).

But the idea that he only had one down year is very misleading. Cook only had one good shooting year, and that shooting was limited entirely to the three point line. He is essentially the same shooter from everywhere, 33-39% depending on how much you like him. That's decent or great from 3, but pretty terrible from 2. Cook shoots like Westbrook inside the arc.

Now, if Cook is truly an elite defender (something I'm very leery of given the percentage based metric has very little meaning given the extremely low level of competition he faced) and can be told never to shoot anything but a three pointer, he could be a better version of Thabo.

And, according to 82games.com, he held his SG opponents to and eFG of 39.3%; that's pretty stellar. I'm thinking Presti has studied this guy.

According to BBProspectus's defensive multiplier, Daequan Cook held his opponent to 90.5 percent of his average output, so that is good. The season before it was 84.6; even better. So statistically he seems to be a good defender.

For reference, Thabo held his opponent to 82.9 (Very manly) and J.Harden was at 95.9. Ivey at 99.2 and Westbrook at 93.9, Maynor at 1.00. So by comparison, he was better than Harden, Ivey, Westbrook and Maynor, but a bit below Thabo. Seems good to me.

I comment less b/c of the new system. Not as convenient from work.

Without threading (which I strongly disliked), what does this commenting system offer besides the possibility of live updates?

I'm w/ DSMok1 on bbcode. If there were a commenting system that allowed bbcode, I'd be all on board. I'd put up with a lot of added effort if bbcode was available.

As is, I'm not sure what's added at the expense of a system that myself and others have noted as being not as good from where they work.

Now is also the last chance for vacations. I know a lot of people have been working twice as hard so that they could take this or next week off. Pretty soon most companies tend to lock up vacations until Christmas as they want their 4th quarter to look good. Since I have a feeling a lot of people post from work, this might just be a bad time.

I chalk up the fewer comments to it being August.

Yeah I'm still in that same boat.

do you think that the smaller number of comments per article is due to the new system, they seem to be down about two fold from a couple weeks ago. I know that we are entering the NBA doldroms so that could be a part of it, too.

Not a huge fan of the new comment system....

Like Jax, I'm not implying he's world beater BUT you have to admit that esp with the news of Haslem coming out today the atmosphere in South Beach was probably not the easiest of work environments for Cook. I'm just saying let's at least wait to see what he can do in a Thunder uni before just already saying that he will be cut.

is the salary for teh D-League really that low? I thought they'd make at least 50K (non nba-ers)

Cook's first two seasons were good FG% seasons, especially from 3. Last year single-handedly ruined his good career numbers. He didn't see the floor much last year due to nagging but not serious injuries.

I'm not saying he's a world beater, but he did have two good seasons and one really poor season.

He was drafted to be a shooter who could defend. To this point, he isn't a very good shooter or defender. His claim to fame is winning the three point contest. Despite that, his career FG% and 3pt% are nothing special. In fact, his FG% is so low it makes you wonder if he's a defensive specialist.

I don't think you should expect Cook to be gone so soon. He's still very young and we haven't seen what he can do for our team yet.

I see.

Do we have any BB code formatting options with this? Can I post preformatted text or tables? Would be handy when doing stat comparisons.

I rarely use hotspots, but sheesh. Russ should almost never be shooting the ball unless he's right under the basket (and even then he's not shooting great). If he can be a 10 assist guy who plays lights out defense, that's as elite as I would ask out of him. We need a scorer sooo bad.

Then again, last year when I was very unenthused with his PG play, he turned around and became a good PG. Prove me wrong again, Russ!

Royce, do you have Disqus set to not show threaded comments (with comments replying to other comments indented directly below?)

Trying out this new comment thingy... Testing... Testing...

So is the new comment business here to stay?

I hate to say it, but I think RW probably gets cut from team USA. Eric Gordon is playing lights out and deserves to get in over RW.

From http://www.nba.com/hotspots/
Russ has 1 red area, but it is not free-throw line.

If LeBron has a deathnote, maybe KD's name is next to Sir Charles

Great article by the NYT. There is a hyperlink embedded with "supple jump shot and athleticism" that links to an article they did September of last year.... Amazing the difference a year makes.
