Jeff Green likely to be cut from Team USA squad

He was always on the bubble, but even with all the big man injury issues, it looks like Jeff Green won’t be making the final 12-man roster for Team USA.

Green didn’t play at all in today’s scrimmage against China and as Chris Sheridan of ESPN reported, didn’t make himself available to the media and also didn’t appear to feature his normally outgoing personality.

When Green was asked by Chris Tomasson of Fanhouse where he stood, he said, “Ask coach. I’m not the guy to answer that question.” Green also said that he’d be willing to travel to Turkey even if he’s not one of the final 12.

One underrated thing behind this is that this could be a nice kick in the pants for Green and extra motivation going into a pretty significant year for him. On a squad that is desperate for a big man and inside help, Green couldn’t make the cut. Now that’s saying something.

However, before everyone jumps on the gripe-about-Green train, keep in mind he was going against some of the very best players in the league. The fact Green was in contention and on the 15-man roster in New York is a pretty big deal. Team USA is going to play small so Green wasn’t really a fit because he wasn’t ever going to get minutes in front of Rudy Gay, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala or Lamar Odom.

One other interesting note from today’s scrimmage: Team USA won every quarter but lost the last one 17-16 as KD played in an experimental lineup with him at center. Team USA is going to have to make some adjustments because of the issues on the inside and some thought Durant might make a perfect center in a small ball lineup. Evidently today, it didn’t go that great. For the game though, KD scored 14 points total.

Not shooting, but I definitely see Rondo as being an upgrade over Westbrook overall. Shooting is probably the only thing that Westbrook does noticeably better than Rondo, and that's more of a case of two bad apples, since Westbrook's shooting is pretty darn bad himself.

Plus, just based on the lineups/time spent on the floor so far, it seems like Rondo, Rose and Billups are locks, while Russ is on the bubble. And given the need for shooters, I don't see him cracking the final 12.

Rando is an upgrade to Russ in shooting? Ben, please tell me you're not saying Rondo is better than Russ at shooting???? Maybe in some other areas Rondo has an edge, SLIGHT edge, but compared to Rondo, RW's shooting ability is off the charts.

Daniel: Love has a killer outlet pass, which can be deadly on a team that relies on running the floor and the fast break. Plus, he's an excellent rebounder.

Russ has the same problem that Jeff has. He can't shoot. He can run a team, but so can Rondo, Rose and Billups. He can get to the hoop, but again, so can the other 3. And Curry and Gordon can definitely out-shoot Russ, so that leaves him the odd man out.

I would like to see him stay though, and cut Kevin Love. I don't see what Love brings to the table with Chandler, Odom, Durant, Gay and Granger at the 4 and 5 spots. But he does have a big body and if we need someone to bang down low and grab some boards, I guess Love can do that.

Watching the game against France, I thought KD would be good at the 4, but offensively, he just looks a little lost. He's clearly best when he's operating on the perimeter.

Seems like Russ is in imminent danger of being cut, too. Which I can definitely see. Team USA wants shooters, and even if Eric Gordon's resurgence is only recent, Coach K might see it as being a good sign of things to come.

Russ unfortunately doesn't do any single thing outstandingly enough (other than defense, maybe) to warrant his inclusion, since Rondo is essentially an upgrade over him at this point, and just as good a defender. That would allow for the team to take Rose, Curry, Billups, and Rondo as PGs, all of whom bring different things to the table.

Green probably would have matched up better against "world" PFs on average than NBA PFs.

Ya, the USA team already has plenty of PGs. But you can never have enough shooters. Especially with that short 3pt line. I agree it doesn't look good for Westbrook.

He wasn't a bad pick. Although missing out on the anchor of a back-to-back NCAA champ was not the best choice. Still, I agree the pick was o.k. He just never turned out to be a special player. Him just barely not making it into Team USA will further increase his price tag...maybe his trade value as well.

Westy looked great on D. Hoping to see more of the same next season.

Gordon got minutes, Curry got a ton of minutes. Thinking Russ may be in trouble as far as making the team.

Russ has 0 minute first half

They made the cut official this morning along with McGee

Who else could have made this USA team from this draft?
As much as we want to rag on Green's game, he still might, Noah aside, have been the best pick Presti could have made. Now an argument could be made for keeping Allen though!

Well...this was just a matter of "when", not "if". I really can't wait to see who OKC will handle his contract situation. I don't know if just waiting to find out his worth via restricted FA offers by other teams will work. He might leave for nothing. They should look for a trade, at least for draft picks. He will become a bench player this year with Ibaka and hopefully Aldrich taking over down low. He should't be given more than 3-4 mil...

Green just isn't a good enough shooter or rebounder to make this team. He would have no role. Not too mention that he's an undersized PF so he wouldn't be able to defend the bigger 4s.

And if he made Team USA, that's one more thing on his resume and he could've probably demanded more money on his upcoming contract extension.

I also completely agree with the "kick in the pants" motivation that this snub hopefully gives him. Hopefully he'll play with something to prove this season.

the stat of scrimmage.KD didn't shoot well. But I think they missed 1 block of KD

If all of the three players stay in team USA,It is good news for fans but not for Brooks. His best players will have less time to rest.

A sad note, but not especially suprising. Given that Green is our third best player it was a bit of a pipe dream to see him even on an admitably weaker Team USA.

Echoing Royce I hope that Green does use this as fuel. Cut by Team USA, not given a new contract by the Thunder, this summer has probably been one of disappointment in the Green camp. Hopefully he rebounds from the disappointment to have a good year.

Ok, no offense to Green because I really like him, and think he's probably a great team mate, and the consumate "glue guy", but it probably needs to be acknowledged that he's just not an "elite" player in the NBA. He's a nice complimentary piece, but he's just not a star. The team is full of All Stars and fringe All Stars, and JG just isn't there.

I hope that he takes it well and puts the downer into perspective as fuel to improve his game (most especially his rebounding and defense) and come out the other side as a better player.
