Wednesday Bolts – 7.14.10

The Washington Post writing on leadership mentions KD: “At 21, Kevin Durant is the youngest player in league history with a scoring title. Going largely unnoticed in the free-agent signing frenzy, Durant re-signed with the small-market Oklahoma City Thunder. His announcement was sent via twitter, a grammatically incorrect short burst of thanks for the opportunity to keep growing with his team. Where the Miami Heat are looking to buy a title with players in their prime, the Oklahoma City Thunder are a study in contrast, as they are going through the long process of building a championship caliber team through developing young players like Durant. While neither method is necessarily better, it will be interesting to see which approach is more effective.”

Darnell Mayberry on where Mo Pete and Daequan Cook fit: “The answer, for now at least and barring significant injuries, seems to be as specialists. With the Thunder committed to developing its young talent, Peterson and Cook appear to be long shots to remain on the roster past 2010-11. The Thunder, though, could use both in certain game situations, most notably the end of games, the point in the game that OKC struggled so much last season. “I’m one of the premier shooters in this league now,” Cook said. “I can help a lot.”

New episode of Air Thunder is on the official site.

I took a look at CBS at five GMs that might be next to go.

Britt Robson of SI on five teams that did the most this offseason: “This offseason, Presti started with four draft picks all outside the top 20. He turned those selections into veterans Morris Peterson (acquired from New Orleans) and Daequan Cook (from Miami, along with the No. 18 pick for the No. 32 pick), two long-range shooters who can relieve some of the perimeter pressure from Kevin Durant and provide a wing option for Russell Westbrook of penetration; the 11th pick in the draft, Kansas center Cole Aldrich (obtained in the Peterson trade), the kind of reliable career backup who gets the most of mediocre talent and will be a good fit in the locker room; a future protected first-round pick from the Clippers in exchange for Eric Bledsoe, the 18th selection last month (history suggests the odds of it being better than 18th are very good indeed); and second-round prospects Tibor Pleiss of Germany, D-League forward Latavious Williams and Florida State’s Ryan Reid.”

Not a lot going on out there in the Thunder world. It’s like it’s July or something.

Update: Great article from the Wall Street Journal on Ryan Reid: “Any way you slice it, Mr. Reid is one of the most unlikely basketball draft picks in at least a decade. He never averaged more than 25 minutes in a college season and never averaged more than seven points. His career high was 17, his rebound rate peaked at five per game and it fell to four during his senior season, when he averaged 22.7 minutes and 6.8 points per game.” (h/t justin)

andrew :Noah’s vertical is about 5 inches better than KD’s… I don’t like comparing aldrich to him at all… the przbilla comparison is better imo.

Noah's vertical is 1/2" better than KD's, and is 4 1/2" greater than Aldrich's.

That Ryan Reid article is groovy. Presti is starting to freak people out.

On a David Kahn note, Ive absolutely hated pretty much every move hes made, but the result of these moves looks to me to have brought about a more cohesive roster. A little more shuffling (Giving up on Rubio and acquiring a valuable asset/ more draft picks, Hiring a new coach and scrapping the triangle) and this could be a legitimate contender with plenty of future assets/desirable young players to flip for talented veterans. I like where they are right now better than I liked where they were 1.5 years ago.

Crow :The weakest teams have an edge at showing improvement. The Kings deserve their mention but maybe one of those was enough. I wouldn’t really want to do it with the Nets or Knicks. But ultimately the 5 was subjective and based on space limitation.

Kinngs do deserve mention. Beno had some huge games last year, including a triple double. And Hassan Whiteside, the man who I wanted us to take, will force anytheam to change their offensive staregy around. He might not start, but when hes in, the oaint will be different

Anonymous :@kfmsooner Considering KD fell to us at #2, no reason to play ‘what if’s’ over that draft night.

Absolutely. Another reason is is that if we paly the If game, wouldnt that player would have made us better, consequently giving us a lesser chance of picking as high as we did teh following year?

If we're playing what ifs, no offense to our guys, cause Cole's a stud, but I wish we would have traded our draft with the Kings'. The Kings are going to be a force in the next few years. Smart drafting IMO.

Anonymous :Minnesota added another PG? Kahn is the Matt Millen of the NBA

OMG, please dont say that name. Im a lions ffan (From Mich) those were horrible, horrible, years.

@Crow
Agreed. Off-season improvement is a bit broad.

@Greg

I understand and agree with your point about improvement. That is the more important standard.

I guess I was assessing movement against a worst case standard. Instead of slipping to run of the mill competitor for a late seed in the west, I think Dallas has done enough to stay in top 4.

shaq s&t for marvin williams to atl rumored

livingston signed with bobcats

@Crow
I guess I was moreso referring to an improvement from the previous season. Since the latter 3 likely won't contribute much just yet, Chandler is the only new piece likely to be in the rotation (maybe Mahinmi plays a little, but they could also bring back Damp).

They still have Caron Butler, Jason Terry, and Beaubois as trade pieces. If they want to swing for a better option than Tyson Chandler.

Keeping Dirk and Haywood, Chandler for filler (filler they carried specifically to make trades), Mahinmi, Ajinca, Dominique Jones and one more guy coming seems pretty good.

@Crow
I certainly agree with Milwaukee. But Tyson Chandler going to the Mavs doesn't make them a big off-season winner in my eyes. But they're likely not done, as you said. So that could change.

@Crow
i agree, we really havnt done much, cook and mo pete were pretty minor non rotation players and aldrich could be great or take a few months to develop

Dallas (not done yet) and Milwaukee are better names for top 5 off=seasons in my opinion.

Twitter is a very casual medium. I don't think there is much value to critiquing grammar there.

OKC doesn't belong on a top 5 list for making the most of the off-season.

Stefanski can only be saved by Collins doing a fine coaching job or making his best trade yet.

Its also a message on a social network. Just like this blog and facebook, hundreds of thousands of people, especially his age (and mine as well) tend to misspell stuff occasionally and on purpose.

Kahn has at least 2 years. If they are still under 30 wins after that then he'll probably go. His roster has obviously signs of an attempt to market to Minnesota where basketball is a low ranking sport. But most fans want wins more than anything else. Kahn is going long-term. That has gotten more credit or granted excuse elsewhere.

Under 30 wins Dumars has a high probability to get canned by next owner. If they get to 35 he won't be.

There are so many other players in the NBA with much worse spelling and grammatical abilities than KD. KD is at least well-spoken.. the same cannot be said for probably half the league.

@Jim

wow, maybe you should relax

@Jim

KD isn't require to spell to collect a paycheck just like I'm not required to play basketball to collect mine.

Chillax.

KD wouldn't make a good GM either, but until he's asked to run the team or win a spelling bee for the state of Oklahoma, I think we'll be okay.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge KD fan and am totally jazzed by the entire OKC team, but if I hear another national writer gush over his re-signing tweet WITH A MISSPELLING I think I'm going to puke. I know, I know, everybody's thrilled because it's example #18,549,350,984 that he's a totally real person, but we already knew that and personally I think it's a worthwhile thing to learn to spell. Why should we be celebrating a lack of knowledge (it's not his first grammatical oddity, after all)? Truly, KD is sooo good in everything else, why not this too? OK, you can start flaming me now.

Russ averaging more rebounds in the playoffs than Green was the last straw for me.

@Greg

I actually don't agree 100%, FWIW

I'm willing to try Green as a 6th man to see if he has the chops to do it. A lot of people just assume that if we move Green to the bench, everything will work out and he'll succeed in that role.

It solves some problems, in theory, but coming off the bench is a skill that not everyone has.

But Horford over Green is funny.

By the way, what's the per game stat for number of times Green decides to penetrate and throw it down like in that youtube clip? 0.3 or so? If he could increase that, it would clarify and settle a lot of issues IMO.

Makes much more sense to wait on Green. Teams aren't going to throw this kind of money around next year because it will weaken their "we're poor, we need to cut salaries" stance

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
It's a massively broken record. I'm not sure there's a statistic, trait/characteristic/intangible, that hasn't been covered on this site about JG. He's a fine player, I'd love to have him as 6th man if he's willing to be piad for his value on this team. Most can agree on that.

Meh. I'm tired of the Jeff Green subject. If people want to like him then that's their prerogative (cue bobby brown).

I can only disagree with Stefan using facts and stats. If those aren't good enough, then nothing will be.

Stefan :People here are wayyy to critical of Jeff Green. 15ppg , a steal, .9 blocks pg, a very athletic hybrid power forward, I would take him over Horford any day.
He proved he could shoot 3′s last year, he had a bad year this year. If he can start to knock down slightly contested 3′s and get better at on ball defense he will be a great player.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ET_iyrhqJP4&fea... is so much better than everyone on here gives him credit for.

Cue Justin...

Horford and Aldrich could do quite a bit of damage down low.

PG - Westbrook
SG - Harden
SF - Durant
PF - Horford (or D. West)
C - Aldrich

That looks outstanding. Then you have Ibaka who can come in at either position providing energy and shotblocking.

f5alcon :@GregS&T for melo?

We've a really good guard (RW), a great wing (KD), and some guys with potential down low. If Ibaka doesn't immprove at the rate some of us think he will, then I'd think signing a legit 4 (like David West) would be our next step.

kfmsooner :@J.G. Marking Everyone’s waiting for the new CBA to extend them. Probably less years and less money.

Yes, but what does that tell those two players and their "value" to their organization. Horford's an All-Star and Noah is one of the premier rebounding, shot-blocking young bigs in the entire league. They both are HUGE pieces of their franchises and I haven't even heard a genuine sniff of extension talks.

Just kind of surprising.

@Anonymous
well we are not cursed, so oden probably would not have gotten hurt and green would be playing SF,lol.

@kfmsooner

Or if we had taken Noah instead.

Oh hindsight, you scourge of hypotheticals, why must you torment us so?

What if Horford had slid to us in the draft instead of Green, or if we could have traded up to grab him. Imagine where we would be...

@J.G. Marking
Everyone's waiting for the new CBA to extend them. Probably less years and less money.

It's a good deal for Luke if he's keeps hitting those 3s. Still don't know why NYK didn't persue him; he makes a lot of sense with D'Antoni and Amare.

@justin
If I were Horford I'd go RFA for that very reason.

ridnour could be a decent triangle PG but as a starter and not a backup.

I think the Bulls will extend Noah. I think he says he wants an extension. Horford wants to play PF I think and is probably unsure about the team's future. He might go RFA.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement with PG Luke Ridnour for 4 years, $16 million.

No, I'm not kidding: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=537975...

justin :If Horford or Noah aren’t extended then no way in hell should Green even be discussed.

I find it incredibly odd that Durant is the ONLY player from that draft class who has inked an extension so far. As we talked a bit about earlier, I would think Noah and Horford would be slam dunk extensions.

@justin
Yeah, that's a lot closer. Higher upside, better motor, little bit better offense, but that's the general mold, I think.

If Horford or Noah aren't extended then no way in hell should Green even be discussed.

@Greg
S&T for melo?

@4razr
the fact that we have heard nothing about a green extension is somewhat telling that he might not get one.

Good points. Presti is a master at retaining flexibility. What he does with Green will be telling as to his savvy and instincts when it comes to making the really tough choice. It would be easy to overpay Green. We'll see what happens.

@4razr
Depending upon if Green is extended (or for how much), we could still have a signifcant amount of cap space next summer as we have Collison, Krstic, Mo-Pete, and D. Cook's contracts expiring (any others I forgot?). We "burned" that cap on expiring contracts (rather than bad ones) so that leaves Presti with flexibility in the future and he didn't give up a single young asset.

Noahs max vertical is one inch better than russ's.. that is ridiculous.
