Thursday Bolts – 7.29.10

Day-to-day, I get a handful of emails asking questions about the Thunder, the NBA and sometimes a few off the wall things. So why not turn it into a DT mailbag of sorts? If you feel like sending something in, go for it. It’s dailythunder@gmail.com if you didn’t know.

The Thunder’s found Rich Cho’s replacement. Mike Winger, now formerly of the Cavs, will take on legal counsel and a cap management role with the Thunder.

A fan wore a LeBron Heat jersey to a Cleveland Indians game. It didn’t end well.

KD is stopping by Capitol Hill today for some NBA Fit thing. I don’t really get the joke the post is making about it, but the info is there nonetheless.

DJ Steve Porter hits another home run with Press Hop 2:

Ian Thompson with five things we learned from the NBA last season: “Oklahoma City is the owners’ favorite model. While players want to play for teams that are willing to spend big in pursuit of a championship, most owners are envious of the disciplined Thunder, who have built a low-payroll roster of promising young players around third-year MVP candidate Kevin Durant. The Thunder have it all — cheap labor, upside and a team that figures to make the playoffs and eventually contend for championships. The players’ union will not appreciate this model.”

Chris Silva notes the three Thunder players (if they all make it) will participate in some wild atmospheres in Turkey: “While there’s no way of simulating what to expect from the crowds in Turkey or how the game will be officiated, each player was sent home with a FIBA regulation basketball, which is different from the leather NBA basketballs because they’re synthetic and slightly smaller in circumference. Colangelo urged them to use it as much as possible, especially at the free-throw line, where the team struggled during last week’s camp.”

For example, here’s one crowd in Turkey that caused a riot. This should be fun!

@Anonymous
I think he was kidding.. more of a mockery at the outlandish bashing we hear time and time again about a good player.

Jeff Green sucks. Ibaka is better than Hakeem. Pleiss is better than Splitter right now!!!

This thread sucks today...:)

Your views are scary buddy. paranoiaaaa...

@Bryan

@Charles
lol this whole thing is just laughable.

rofl. Dont worry, the US team will be fine in turkey. The mind of american people about islamic countries has drastically changed since 9/11.

@Brew
I think those shirts are meant to a sort of "f-you" from Seattle fans, but that's no reason we can't adopt the symbol to change its meaning and, forgive me, steal their thunder.

@Heysloth
Pretty bush league in my opinion, but it sounds like they set him straight the way he was apologizing for it. If we're talking football, how about Haynesworth's off-season, and then walking through part of his conditioning test, basically failing on purpose. Glad we don't have guys like that on the Thunder.

man this convo has little place on this board, what do you guys think about dez bryant not roy williams pads? :)

@Anonymous
That's kinda the point. When I or any of the other 'named' posters writes something, there's a commenting history that I can draw on and reference back to so I know more clearly where the person is coming from. When 'anonymous' posts, it's just another voice shouting in the wind and it's hard to get a bead on their thoughts since I don't know anything else this person has ever written on the site; it's hard to have a conversation this way.

@Bryan

Bryan: You were the one fear mongering about Islam, Muslims, terrorists and fanatics in your original post, sir. I particularly liked the part where you gave Turkey a great backhanded compliment "to be fair, Turkey is as much European as it is Muslim".

My comparison may not be well received, but that doesn't make my point inaccurate. And just so we're clear, my point is this: Bad stuff happens, regardless of where you are. There's no need to bait people of a particular faith or nationality just because of the actions of a miniscule % of that population. Crazy is not beholden to any particular creed.

I certainly didn't come here looking for a political discussion. And FruitLoop, not sure why you think I view anyone as sub-human. I'm an OKC fan, and I came here to read about the Thunder. I'd like to be able to do that without politics and religion getting involved. That is all.

The shirts, not sure. I actually wished the team remained the Sonics, just went to OKC. Since they didn't, I am not sure if those shirts aren't just a big f you. By the way, old Sonic fan, current Thunder boy, owner of four DT shirts.

@holdmymartian
I don't know enough about the teams but I'd probably put their odds much higher... 2:1 or 3:2. From what I understand, it's much them and Spain then everyone else.

I went to a Pistons game right after the "Malice at the Palace" and a spectator had a Ron Artest jersey on. He was escorted out even before they announced the starting lineups.

@holdmymartian
Sweet! I can't wait!

@Bryan I believe Pleiss is playing.

holdmymartian :So…odds of the USA Team winning gold? 5 to 1?

That seems fair... does anyone know if we'll get to see Krstic or Pleiss in the world championships?

It seems like Krstic was not planning on it... but is Pleiss gonna be on the German team?

@gr8ball83
Hahaha!!!
You're not kidding! I'm jonesing pretty bad and I think it's pretty obvious that it's making me a litle, well, like the old guy who won't let anyone walk on his lawn.

So...odds of the USA Team winning gold? 5 to 1?

@Bryan
Man, we need some basketball games to happen soon....

@Charles
I reeeallly don’t mean to keep stirring this pot. And I’m dreadfully sorry that my quip led to so much discussion about something other than basketball.

But this has nothing to do with "faiths/nationalities" and everything to do with recent violent protests in Turkey aimed at Israeli athletes like the men's national basketball team and girl's national volleyball team.... all the result of regional hostilities between Israel and Turkey.

So, no. I don’t really find it particularly ironic that someone in Oklahoma would be concerned about the possibility for further violence – perhaps against team USA – by an individual or group of individuals looking to make a statement on an international stage about their perception of Israel’s recent military actions.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not even from Oklahoma. But, I would think that people living here would understand – more than most – that it only takes one extremist to take lives in the name of some half-baked political agenda.

Do I really think that something bad is going to happen? Not really. But it’s a valid (half kidding) concern that has gained he attention of Team USA officials and concerned Turkish officials enough to assign a special forces team to our guys.

While you make a valid point about the potential for violence at any time and in any place, I think it’s fair to say that there is an increased risk in this particular instance.

More to the point, your comparison is NOT well received, sir.

Again, many apologies to everyone for politicizing this thread. It won’t happen again.

Oh, and Ibaka was 3rd, Harden was 5th.

I think Charles made an excellent point. Even bad things happen everywhere. Even at home.

But I'm not worried. Our boys will be fine.

Anonymous posters are super-annoying but lets not kid ourselves; aside from Royce and the other blog authors, we're all anonymous here.

@Charles

Sorry, that's just my Napoleonic Complex getting out of hand. Please go back to viewing us as sub-human. (not that I could stop you)

Charles :
Anyone else notice the irony of OKC fans being worried about a bombing in Turkey? Point being, horrible things happen everywhere, and are perpetrated by people of all faiths/nationalities. I’m sure the boys will be just fine over there.

Yeah, I don't love that comparison.

Charles :Anyone else notice the irony of OKC fans being worried about a bombing in Turkey?

I'm an OKC fan, and I'm not worried. Stop it.

This league just hasn't been the same since Vancouver lost the Grizzlies. Damn you Stern!

Anyone else notice the irony of OKC fans being worried about a bombing in Turkey? Point being, horrible things happen everywhere, and are perpetrated by people of all faiths/nationalities. I'm sure the boys will be just fine over there.

@Albabycakes

Nice shirts. Gotta love the green/yellow colorways. :\

@ThunderHorn

Ha! I think someone should forward that idea to The Lonely Island.

@Bryan

I believe it is completely obvious that Royal Ivey is #3 and Mo Peterson #5.

@Brett

Odom: Most likely to be lured into a stranger's van with candy.

It's funny, when I posted the original remark about Turkey, I expected the debate to be about who the 3rd and 5th best players are on the Thunder lol...

And yeah, Turkish delight is delightful!

@MartzMimic
Turkish Delight is delicious.

@MartzMimic

Lamar Odom was the easy answer until you narrowed it down to our three. I'd go with KD.

Which of the three could most easily be enticed into the service of an ice queen with a bit of Turkish Deilght?

That anonymous was me. I forgot I logged onto a different computer.

@Anonymous

Maybe he's related to Debra Winger, from officer and a gentleman.

@MartzMimic

I'm glad I'm not the only person that remembers that band. I just hope Winger doesn't have any issues with 17 yr olds.

Anonymous :@Bryan

you’re an idiot.

You're the idiot you coward, hiding behind your anonymous screenname.

I know more about that region than you know about your own hometown and though far-fetched, what Bryan said cannot be completely discounted.

But again, it is far-fetched, because Turks are pretty normal and westernized. They do have a growing Islamic problem however.

@DizzyDai

Bah!! You stole my Winger line!

You fell in a trap that won't let you win, you try again and again
You let the Heat burn your feet, baby try to understand
That you'll only own it when you say...
Easy come, easy go

@ThunderHorn
It's kind of the Thunder Fans' version of Godwin's Law.

@Royce Young

i don't think you needed to throw that subject out there, this Turkey/Muslim/US debate would have shifted onto Jeff Green by itself.

@justin
Yeah, I guess it's part of the team's (and Royce's) success...

Can't wait for the games to start. I wanna see KD in that setting SOOOO bad!!

@justin
i was going to say the same thing

I've noticed more and more 'Anonymous' posters.

@Lefty
No worries, man. Your remarks were perfectly understandable. That "idiot" remark just really ticked me off lol. Sorry if I got a little hot under the collar. I'm not used to running into that sort of thing in here.

@Royce Young
lol
Ahhh, an old standby....
