THE DECISION open thread

I don’t know, just in case you folks are looking for a place to chat about it. Matt Moore and I will be keeping it hot over at CBS Sports. If you’d like to have a peek, that’d be cool.

Also, I thought I’d break a little something for you – Sources: LeBron will not announce Oklahoma City as his destination. Also, he will not play for the Minnesota Twins, Baylor Bears or Toronto Maple Leafs. Carry on.

Why Miami should be afraid about pay luxury TAX?? Miami must dare to pay it.. ...LA ,Magic,Boston,Nugget.Mav can pay luxury for championship title

they have Chalmers $854,389 On Bench,and should be sign VET Big Z $925,000 and VET Allen Iverson $645,830 and VET Ben Wallace $825,497 on bench and they still have 2nd pick SF: DaSean Butler,PF: Jarvis Varnado,C: Pittman correct?? that is not ugly bench for them...just dare to pay like @JUSTIN said SF: MIKE MIller and solid Center..they will go champion...........MIAMI NO NEED TRUE POINT GUARD because WADE and JAME is playmaker already .in my opinion they should be sign Center defendsive mind the most.........But if this year MIAMI not win but NEXT YEAR they will have 2 first round pick from Minny and their own pick for help big3...next year is Best NBA Team

Daniel :Dang it. All it took to get Beasley was a 2nd round pick?? We should’ve grabbed him. Durant and Beasley are boys. They would’ve been great together. Kahn actually outmanuevered Presti on this one.
Though I know what you all are thinking: how would he get any minutes? I don’t know, but I think getting the former No. 2 pick in the ’08 draft to team up with one of his best friends, in exchange for nothing more than a 2nd round pick, is a pretty good deal. Instead, he goes to a division rival. Not happy.

It was more than just that pick. The Wolves and Heat also agreed to a 1st round draft pick swap in the future, meaning the Heat will get a lottery pick (possibly top 5) within the near future to add on top of their 3 All-World players.

The Heat will not win a title unless their minimum salary center is a more than capable defender and plays 30+ minutes a game. How many of those are available, and will actually play for basically nothing?

Orlando, Atlanta and Chicago are all average on one of these, poor on the other. Bucks 8th on one, 2nd on the other.

Portland top 6 on both.

Miller is a key signing.

I just poked around the game logs of James and Wade and found that in losses they shoot poor from 3 point at a very high frequency, this regular season and playoffs. A top 3 point defense may be an important element of beating the Heat.

Last regular season the best at limiting opponent 3 pt FG% was... the Lakers. Thunder 3rd though. Celtics 4th, Spurs 6th. Limiting opponent 3 pointers made- Spurs #1, Celtics 4th, Thunder 7th, Lakers 11th.

I like how all the ESPN guys are calling USA team for the World Championships TeamDurant.

Early talk that D'Antoni would be a major attractor did not bear out. Amare went there because it was his best financial option and he likes offense and knows what he can get away with. They'll try to get another star or two next summer but top player reaction to the NY style may continue to hamper.

@DXL

If Miller stays healthy Miami will have the best offense in the league by far, no matter who they put at center.

Miller's rated really well by some of the statistical analysis guys. Even higher than Bosh. Still, he's on the wrong side of 30, and perimeter players tend to decline significantly after that age.

Well, that's the absolute last big acquisition they can make with their cap situation. It's minimum salary contracts for the rest of their team. No other trades possible, except with Chalmers.

They've got to figured out how to put a speedbump in front of Dwight Howard. Imagining Bosh trying to defend Superman must be scary for Miami.

@justin
yeah, he was just better back in memphis all around, yeah they are all great efficent scorers, gonna have to play zone on them and attack bosh and whatever center they have hard, we need inside offense more then ever now

Miller / Bosh / LeBron all had ~60% TS this season. Wade was at 56.2%. This team is going to be amazing on offense...

f5alcon :@justinugh, this is making me sick, they still have no bench and mike miller hasnt been great in awhile, but he fills a need for sure.

Miller shot 50% from 3pt range this season. That's really all they need him to do.

David Kahn should win GM of the year..but it should be for the Miami Heat.

@justin
ugh, this is making me sick, they still have no bench and mike miller hasnt been great in awhile, but he fills a need for sure.

@justin
LeBron can play PG and defend Rondo in heat

Miller / Wade / LeBron / Bosh / Anyone

Ridiculous.

@Frootloop
yeah i am so pumped to take them down, i hope durant and the guys feel the same way. We are the good guys

Mike Miller will sign with the Heat, 5 years 30 million. Thanks David Kahn!

I like what Reggie Miller had to say. You can see he's clearly shaken about LeBron's decision: http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nba_tv/2010/07/0...

@J.G. Marking

This season is going to be sooooooo good.

Rich :We will see how long the ego can handle justin. It sounds nice and fun when you are talking about over the phone…see how many years he can take of being second fiddle. I give it two before they start in-fighting.

It's a possibility. Miami belongs to Wade. Cleveland belonged to LeBron, probably on a level even higher than that because he was from there. We'll see how serious LeBron is about winning because it's Wade who will be in the spotlight, and the Heat will be Wade's team.

But you can't say that LeBron's motivation for going to Miami was anything but winning. He had better options as far as his 'brand' (Chicago), and better options as far as legacy (sticking it out in Cleveland). He has to know he's taking a passenger seat in this sitation.

Sweet mother of all that is good and pure, has anyone gone to www.nba.com/cavs yet?!!!

I mean, wow.

Always. Second fiddle. Scottie Pippen. He will always have that next to his name.

Either he doesn't care about legacy...or truly believes he is a second fiddle. Hard to believe either one, but one or the other is true.

He still will be remembered as not being able to win a title in cleveland. And as a guy that took the easy way out.

LBJ is a defend when have to kind of guy. He doesn't have the passion to do it on every play like Jordan.

Is LBJ not a good defender?I watched Bos Vs Cav palyoff games.Pierce was so bad performanece in offense.But he eat magic very easily.

Etan Thomas starting at center, Rafer Alston starting at point guard: this is your Miami Heat!

Well it remains to be seen if Miami can build a supporting cast around their Superstars. I doubt it. To many superstars can hurt a team also.

@Rich

I disagree. I think all three did this to win. I think that this was planned for awhile, a lot of evidence is around that shows that Bosh / Wade / LeBron had planned to play together from the outset so they could win. This whole show with the media and the decision was some razzle dazzle to distract everyone. And it worked.

I don't like the way LeBron chose to do this, but I can't say that they weren't thinking about winning. It's a big deal for LeBron to go to Miami and join Dwyane Wade, it alters his legacy irrevocably even if he does win championships there; and he knows that. But he's doing it anyway. He clearly wants to win.

Agree about the defense. Bosh isn't becoming a good defender in his life. The Bulls (the last three especially) had three of the top 10 defenders ever. Hard to top that.

Not to mention, winning clearly isn't priority number one on any of their minds. YOu could tell that with how much they ate this FA thing up. Self-promotion is number 1, winning is number 2. KD has them beat there.

it was 96-54 . . . unreal . . .

justin :The main difference is defense. The Jordan Bulls, especially with Rodman, were top defensive teams. I don’t think LeBron / Wade / Bosh are great defenders. LeBron’s overrated in that regard, Wade’s pretty good but nowhere near Jordan or Pippen, and Bosh has spent seven years on some of the worst defenses in history. Spoelstra’s a good defensive coach, so we’ll see what happens there.

excellent points . . . one of my favorite moments was when they put Pip on Stockton and the score was like 89-54 or whatever it was . . . incredible . . .

Kev :I guess now we have to look forward to all three of them getting interviewed together . . .

@OKC baby
Does that make the nickname for the trio "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"?

Lebron vs. KD
Wade vs. Thabo
Bosh vs. Ibaka, Green, Collison
Ect.

I like OKC chances

Wade and Lebron also arent Jordan. And I dont think Miami is going to be able to pick up a guy like Rodman or Grant. Also so pretty good shooters Steve Kerr

the interesting part is that you know he is going somewhere - the fun part is guessing where . . .

I change my mind about the Heat-Cavs game - the games at Cleveland WILL be on national television . . .

I wouldn't be upset if we got Jefferson, he's a skilled player, I'm just not as high on him as I was after examining closer.

Rich :Jordan and Pippen didn’t have mediocre big guys. Rodman, imo, should have been a first ballet HOFer. Horace Grant was pretty freaking good too.

you forgot to mention Cartwright, Perdue, Stacey King, and Scott Williams . . .

you are right about Grant and Rodman obviously . . .

@Kev

They'll fill out the team in the years to come but I think it'll be tough this year. Wade will be 30 years old in the season after next. We'll see what happens...

justin :Jefferson suffers from an efficiency standpoint because he hardly ever gets to the line. I don’t see enough of him to judge why this is. Maybe he’s allergic to contact, or prefers to just force shots. Some Wolves fans tell me it’s because his footwork is so good he just dances around contact. It’s a valid concern, though.

I have watched him - he's a black hole, he doesnt really kick out like he should . . .

@Kev
kobe just got a whole lot more likeable
