Summer League, makes me feel fine…

So here we are again ladies and gents! Summer League is fast upon us as the first game will start Monday, even though most of the work force will be at home so, surprisingly, there shouldn’t be a huge hit in work productivity because of the awesome spectacle that is the Orlando Summer League.

Now as you noticed, I’m not going to go over the Vegas Summer League but pretty much just use both events for the purpose of this article (plus, the Thunder won’t play in Vegas, unlike last year, and you’re on a Thunder site so…).  And it’s not like either location has better or worse competition.

They’re both awful.

I mean just plain abysmal at times.

But, alas, in the summertime with only baseball to regularly keep you company, we will flock to any kind of organized “professional” basketball like mosquitoes to a bug zapper.

So without further ado, here’s my list of the Top 5 things you absolutely have to know/understand about Summer League before you either throw up in your mouth a little after watching a game for the first time or think that Ryan Reid will be the next Hakeem Olajuwon after he scores 20 points, pulls down 20 boards and blocks 10 shots.

1. It’s pretty bad. No, seriously, it hurts sometimes it’s so bad.

First things first, you have to go in with adequate expectations about what kind of basketball you’re going to see if you have any chance of appreciating and enjoying the NBA’s Summer League for the awesomeness that it is. And that expectation is this…

Think street ball with the world’s best basketball players, only they literally just met one another, have absolute no knowledge of the systems they’re asked to play, are hopped up on nerves and the desire to prove themselves and are being coached (usually) by anyone but the actual head coach that will train and mold them in the regular season.

The outcome? For every 1 amazing play or exciting performance there are, at minimum, 5 mind numbing, soul crushing and James Naismith in his grave turning debacles.

Every player is either trying to show that they should have been picked that high, should have been picked higher, should have been picked period or really should have gotten more playing time during the last season. Every guy is pressing and that is just a recipe for slop.

But it certainly lends itself to wide open play and an awesome number of bonehead video clips. A beautiful slop, if you will.

2. 99% of the time it really means nothing

There is always one guy who has a game where he drops 40 points, or grabs 20 rebounds or notches 12+ assists (Marcus Williams was this guy last year) and everyone freaks out and says, “Did you see so-and-so dropped 40 in Summer League. Write it down, I bet that guy is a stud next year.”

And then the individual is cut by October.

Like I said earlier, Summer League is conducive to playground basketball and some people are just better at that type of play than the play of organized, well-coached, high execution oriented NBA regular season basketball games. Thus, some people are going to look great and shine and then will never make an impact during an actual game.

The 1% exception to this is when someone displays specific skills or basketball IQ or startling athleticism that they aren’t supposed to. Case in point: Serge Ibaka. Last year we all were led to believe that Ibaka was this incredibly raw prospect who didn’t really grasp basketball concepts and was just an amazing athlete. And then in the Orlando Summer League we all witnessed a fluidity to his footwork, great timing for blocks and rebounds and, gasp, a sweet jumpshot.

But even then, we had our doubts! This is Summer League we’re talking about.

3. Don’t overreact the other direction either; he might not be bad after all

See the above mention of “playground style versus NBA regular season style.” If an individual player’s game is based on crisp movement, timing, polish and a high skill-set, I’m going to almost guarantee that they will not be as impressive in Summer League as they are/would be during the season.

BUT, if a guy shows a serious lack of fundamentals or heart in Summer League or is touted as one specific type of player, like “he’s a dead-eye shooter,” and then they can’t hit the broad side of a barn for five games even though he had nothing but open looks, or a guy who’s 7’0 and touted as a great rebounder and shot blocker prefers jacking up three’s and cringes at the thought of contact in the paint, well, that person’s going to need either some time to development or, well, another day job (like one overseas!).

4. Typically, whichever team has more returning NBA players on their roster runs roughshod over everyone else

We haven’t really got to experience this on a team-wide scale yet so I’m pretty excited for the meaningless blowout victories I expect the Thunder Summer League team to ring up in Orlando. Last year was Westbrook going off and being the best player there after his rookie season with Weaver’s steady play also chipping in. And I have a similar feeling that Ibaka, Harden and Maynor are all going to look like men among boys because of their rookie season experience AND playoff experience.

But, again, it doesn’t count in October so, um, enjoy it in proper perspective.

5. Every Summer League game should only be called by Dante & Galante

If it’s true, and NBA TV will broadcast the games without Dante & Galante being allowed to give their brilliant and sometimes captivating to the point that the only reason I’m still watching this comedy of errors is their hilarious commentary, then I may just mute the thing and call them up on the phone and beg them to watch and talk about it for just me.

Bad form, NBA TV. Bad form.

You know, if it’s true. Especially since I can’t find out if there will be a live stream on the Magic’s site because of the NBA airing it and making you pay for online viewing, which is just the perfect example of something getting too successful to the point where it kind of ruins itself because of how awesome it was.

D&G forever!

Yeah.

It is good to hear traditional scout Rosenberry give respect to proper, cautious valuation.

I'm pretty sure he was there for the McIlvane signing too.
But everyone makes mistakes.

Crow :Both Cho and Rosenberry were there for the Baker signing, though they were staff, not the final decision-makers.

Wally Walker spearheaded that fiasco, from what I recall. I think Cho started getting more input in personnel decisions when Sund was hired.

Both Cho and Rosenberry were there for the Baker signing, though they were staff, not the final decision-makers.

Correction: I guess the Baker trade was before Sund. I am pretty sure Cho was there. Not sure about Rosenberry.

Sund / Cho / Rosenberry gave Vin Baker his last big deal.
And they took Swift. Pendergraph was the main starting push for Petro and Sene but nobody stopped him.

@Daniel Plainview

according to wojo the Knicks hurt themselves a lot with their presentation and Lebron. He was much more impressed with the Nets.

@justin

This is my favorite quote:

"This game has become a numbers game," said Hawks director of pro personnel/college scouting Steve Rosenberry, who worked with Cho in Seattle. "It's easier to assess the talent than it is to assess to attach a number to that talent. You can inherit a bad contract and you can trade for one, but you damn sure don't want to give one."

It's my favorite because the Hawks want to give JJ the max.

Several paragraphs here on Assistant GM Rich Cho. Can't believe he isn't a GM yet...

Personally, I don't feel sorry for any of these team. I do feel sorry for their fans, but that's a different story.

Sorry, folks, I will satrt revising my spelling. I know its Stoudemire. And the last sentence of my post about where teh FA's are going, I meant to say, "And an even more dramatic finals with OUR Thunder."

Oddly, I do feel kind of sorry for the Heat. Whos going to want to go there if tehres none of teh big three or Stoudemire? WORST TEAM EVER 2011

And Please forgive me for talking this in the Sunner league forum. I try to be a purist withing the context of teh forum.

And thsi is my take, though Ive heard little of it:

Wade and Bosh to Bulls. Bosh KNOWS he will never win a title if he is THE man. He needs a star. And Wade is a native of CHicago. I think this has been said, but understated in teh press.

Lebron and Studenmire/Paul to the Knicks. I really think Bron wants to maximize his stardom. Yes, he can improve on it. And like someone said, Endorsements are bigger in NYC. However, Im sure he wants a point gaurd on his team that can pass.

I dont believe the Big Three will end up together. I hope this is how it turns out. That would make a great Eastern COnference finals. And an even more dramatic finals with out Thunder.

i wouldn't rule out Dallas as a Wade destination just yet. Cuban is going to try and do something, and if most of the good F/A roe players are gone by the time the big guys decide. or None of them want to take a pay cut, then miami will have nothing left.

then Wade will leave.

I dont care where any of tehse blokes go. I do fear a Bulls team with Lebron/Wade/Rose/Noah. Thats alot of power, I do fel like theyll have a hard time adjustung to one another. Bron and Wade do like their stats, which I think Bron and Wades scoring would dip almost 3 to 5 points. Can their Egos take such a blow?

What ever these guys do, IM not overly worried. I think well soon learn to hang with everybody.

Crow :
Wade and James are both wings who play with the ball almost every play. It would take a big adjustment to go to off the ball or even share. Much easier to accept a big man partner.

This is what I've been talking about. Personally, I hope they end up together somewhere. Obviously the would be able to score, but having them both on one team would diminish each player's total impact.... and better to only have them on the Thunder's schedule twice in a season :)

ThuDer :
Dante and Galante were the only reason to watch Summer League. Those guys really are hilarious. MLB ought to hire them so maybe someone would watch!

they are banking on nba and nfl lockouts

according to that yahoo article by wojo, Knicks all but eliminated themselves.

If Wade/Bosh end up in Chicago, leaves Cavs/Nets for James.

Cavs - having nothing of value to get a max guy in a sign and trade.

Nets - have Harris, Favors, Lopez. Would be able to get Johnson. Their bench wouldn't be strong, but it'd be stronger than the Bulls' bench. Nets bench: Lee, Williams, D. James, Boone. Not strong but not completely terrible.

Almost every play, at least touching the ball and deciding whether to use it or move it.

Wade and James are both wings who play with the ball almost every play. It would take a big adjustment to go to off the ball or even share. Much easier to accept a big man partner.

The DON :

Joe :To the point of the article, I believe Ronald (flip) Murray was the MVP of the Summer league for Seattle one year….Nuff said.

Even worse than that, one year for the Shammond Williams from the Sonics was the MVP of summer league

Oh God, I’d forgotten about him. Remember how he would dribble the ball endlessly until the 24 was down to about 3 and then hoist a three. Gawd he was terrible.

Shammond Williams was brilliant in the 99-00 players against the Lakers. 67% TS, 27.4 PER. He was making so many crazy shots. I remember after we got eliminated thinking that dude would be a legit starter in the league the way he cut up LAL.

Do you remember Lazaro Borrell, or as Sonics fans called him that year, the Cuban Scottie Pippen? He was horrible...

Anyone see the quote from Wade on ESPN ticker: on LBJ..."We're real good friends. But, you know, we're on two different pages right now...We're doing two different things."

Also article on espn.com nba page about Wade's 2nd meeting with Miami. Headline at the top of the article...Reports: Bosh joins Wade in meeting.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=534867...

I'm thinking more and more Wade and Bosh to Bulls. Lebron to Cavs or Nets, Johnson to Nets(if Lebron goes).

@Crow

I agree Utah is the most likely candidate to get bumped. If Houston or New Orleans can stay out of injury hell, they'll be tough to keep out IMO.

@Joe

Utah in perhaps the hottest seat sounds right if they lose Boozer, maybe pass on Korver (?), face their usual injury issues, etc.

Joe :Steve Blake is a really really great pickup for the lakers. He can do everything Derick Fisher can do only a bit better, and he’s younger.
Very shrewd.

Fisher's greatest attribute is that he's clutch. Time and time again, that little bastard hits the big shot. Blake won't match him in that regard, but yes, he's a very talented offensive point guard. I hate the Lakers.

@ThunderHorn

meant to add, its better than going to the Knicks where you get Amare and Curry as your front line and nobody is going to be playing defense.

@Matt

Their bench would be very young/inexperienced and not all that great. Lee, Williams, James, and Boone.

I think the Nets deal is a much better way to go for both James and Johnson.

A Harris/Johnson/LeBron/Favors/Lopez Nets team would be extremely good.

@Daniel

I'm thinking if Wade goes to Chicago then Bosh will likely join him.

I think we could see Lebron go to NJ w/ Johnson. Johnson is apparently still in play and hasn't agreed to anything with Atlanta. He's waiting to see what else happens.

OR we could see the option the Knicks pitched James(and I believe Johnson/Amare as well). All 3 would go to NYC, join the Knicks with starting deals starting around 11-12 mil/year.

I'd guess at the same 8 in the playoffs next year, with the Spurs and Thunder and Portland sort of jockeying for 6th, 7th and 8th.

But all this is if everything stays static. One big injury (Carmelo, Durant, Roy, Duncan, Kobe or Gasol) and the whole projection goes to hell. But, I think the Jazz are the most likely to drop out of playoff contention.

Bringing 8 or 9 of their top 10 back and Nash still doing what he does on offense I'd be surprised if they drop out of the playoffs. But it is a risk that I think every team but the Lakers and maybe a few others face.

Dudley stepped up a bit more in the playoffs.

Another part of feeling optimistic about the Suns' future that I left unstated was that I like Dudley pretty well, not just because Adjusted +/- does, but that helps.

I check Adjusted a lot but it is not the only or last word to me. Sometimes I keep my caution to myself, sometimes I don't.

@justin

Maybe not. I try to be open-minded. Will watch and see what changes for them without him.

Houston would be the favorite to step up and contend for a playoff spot but I'd guess it starts out an 11 way race and the bottom will be better too.

Crow :How much will losing Amare hurt the Suns? I’m guessing not much in the regular season. His raw on/off was -1 and negative on every version of Adjusted +/-.

I think this is a case where +/- doesn't tell the whole story...

@Joe

The news or rumor-breaking is all over the place. Hard to stay current on it all.

But Blake is a good component either way.

Fisher steps up from 37% on 3 pt FG% regular to over 40% in playoffs. But Blake in much less chances went from 39% to 44%.

Fisher has the history of big shots.

Blake vs Fisher on defense? Always hard to say but the numbers suggest Blake better recently 1 on 1 but Fisher better at help or team defense or at least used to be.

On the other hand, Probaskteballtalk is suggesting that D-fish and the Lakers may part ways...so what the hell do I know?

I think Blake is taking Farmar's roster spot and Miller is taking Shannon Brown's roster spot.

@Crow
Oh, I think Fish is staying; at least I haven't heard anything to the contrary, just that at 34 years old he has definitely lost a step. Blake can step into his spot as the starting 1, and if reports are true, Miller and Fish can be the 2nd unit backcourt with Miller getting minutes at the 3 behind Artest and/or Luke Walton.

@Joe

I would have thought Fisher ultimately stays, but maybe not if Miller is indeed coming too.

Team offensive efficiency was 111-112 with Westbrook on the court. In tough games, if Westbrook is going well, either Maynor keeps it cranking or sometimes you might roll longer with Westbrook.

Team offensive efficiency was 112 with Durant, the main driver. 110 with Harden.

Really only Maynor and Ibaka lagged much at 104 and 105 respectively. But Maynor played with Durant only 50% of the time, while it was over 90% with Westbrook. Ibaka about 65%.

For the sake of our offensive efficiency, I hope Harden lights it up and has a week like Westbrook did last summer. Then Harden can maybe earn the starting spot.
