Your best moment or experience from the ’09-10 Thunder season

Hello fellow DT readers out there. I’m hoping you’re reading this in the dry and sheltered confines of your home, office, well pretty much anywhere but inside a car on your smart phone just trying to kill the time as you wait for a road to become unblocked or opened back up.

And since we’ll all probably remember this day as the day the OKC metro single-handedly crushed the rain record for the month of June in what will probably amount to a 10-12 hour time-span, that got me thinking: “I wonder what the fans of the Thunder will take away from this last season and what they consider to be the biggest and most memorable moment from the last year.”

So I’m opening up this little article here to let you join in the conversation and give us all the gift of your brightest and best memory from this pretty historic season.

To kick us off, I’ll jump in first with what can only be referred to as the single most intense, exciting, anxious and awe-inspiring sporting event I’ve ever experienced first hand—aka, Game 3 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

I’m going to try my best to be brief so I’ll start this by saying that you could feel the electricity on the street as you approached the Ford Center. This was it. The first playoff game in Oklahoma City history and somehow you were lucky enough to find yourself with a ticket and an almost comically oversized t-shirt in a sea of blue.

The noise. The energy. The defending champions. It all morphed and multiplied into an almost uncontainable frenzy from seat-to-seat. Every Kobe bucket was a dagger and every Durant rebound in the midst of his struggling shooting defined perseverance, every James Harden three pointer made you almost feel  the weight of Games 1 and 2 lift off of his shoulders, every second, every play, every moment was magnified and intensified to a level I’ve never witnessed.

And to share that with my wife, with my friends and my extended buddies at the DT, well isn’t that why we dive headfirst into fanhood? Isn’t that why we’re here in the first place? The community, the brotherhood, the family and fan support. It was all there. In that Ford Center Arena, I had roughly 18,000 family members (minus a few smug Laker fans, who were actually pretty cool afterward except for the woman who left screaming, “Ya’ll still going to get your [behinds] kicked”) all joining with me in the same goal, the same purpose of screaming as loud and consistently as we had to in order to help will those boys in white to come out on top.

I was in basketball nirvana.

And then amazing happened. Westbrook dunked on Lamar Odom and half the Kardashian family. The Lakers lead was only 6. The Ford Center thundered with wide-eyed amazement and excitement. We could feel something was happening…

Defensive stop. Harden pulls up EARLY in the shot-clock in transition with all of his old-school swagger back and makes yet another confidence boosting, chest pounding three pointer to cut the lead to 3. The walls of the Thunderdome reverberate and percolate while your ears could no longer discern individual sounds. Everything was a sea of raging white noise.

And then after a fantastic defensive performance, Kevin Durant is given the ball off of an outlet pass and heads up the court, crossing the mid-court line and even though it was unbelievably early in the shot-clock, even though he’s been ice cold from the floor all night, even though there is no one underneath the basket to rebound, every single blue-clad fanatic in that arena knew exactly what he was going to do.

KD pulled up from behind the line, the roaring Ford Center falling whisper quiet in an instant as the ball soared through the air, each fan’s lungs filling and holding, burning in anticipation as the ball and cylinder grew closer.

Net. Eruption of noise.

Jumping, deafening screams, a sea of blue ebbing and flowing in a moment of pure and utter jubilation.

8-0.

And I’ll never forget it.

I'm a diehard Piston's fan. Yes, I know they have sucked it up the past 2 seasons and won't be too good next season unless a miracle happens. But I'm also a fan of the Thunder that lives in Michigan. I just wanted to say how much class the fans showed at the end of Game 6. With the OKC's players hearts dropped after they couldn't hit the last second shot, the fans in the arena didn't miss a beat and cheered. Not just a lazy round of applause, but a loud and sincere appreciation of the team. Their team. That was an amazing, heartfelt, and one of the rarest things you'd see. Lots of fans would've just started to walk up the aisles and found the nearest exit. But the way everyone stayed and stood up and cheered was awesome to watch.

I want a t-shirt for this moment I postponed my bachelor party trip to attend game three, and jumped up and down and hugged my best man and my future wife violently during this 8-0 run I will never ever forget it. For the shirt I'm thinking date and time and we will never forget.

My second favoritest memory is going to the Lakers game at the end of the season with my brother from another mother (aka my roll dog, my best bud) before he got shipped off to the 'Stan (Afghanistan). He's an Okie, but the military has prevented him from attending any Thunder (or OKC Hornets) games. So this was his first OKC NBA game and we throttle the world champion Lakers. He had a blast.

Royce, I gotta agree with you 100%. That sequence is what makes basketball fan lifers. Just the culmination of working and plugging away at the Laker's lead that started from the outset when the Lakers led 10-0. It was like climbing up a mountain and finally hitting that point where you can see the top of the mountain and finally reaching it. That was what that 8-0 run was.

Proud to be a Thunder fan when at the end of the Last Celtics/LA game Sunday night,in Boston, the announcer said something like this "now if only The Celtics Fans give the ovation to their team like The Thunder Fans did after their last game with LA in Oklahoma City."

#1. DT you are absolutely right...the 8-0 run was the greatest thing I have witnessed in sports! And everyone in OKC should have known something amazing was going to happen by the ominous thunderclouds that loomed all afternoon and evening in OKC.

I came to downtown that night in hopes of winning a ticket via "fill up the ford" however my number did not get called. I thought that was it...my friend and I didnt have a TON of money to scalp a ticketso we thought it was over, but we wanted to go soo bad. I had just $50 and my friend had $97- We came across a dude selling tickets and somehow by the grace of God he gave us $15, baseline, very very top row for the money we had. $147. Best $147 ever spent! .... a footnote to this game...the Beat LA chants after the game that continued all the way to bass pro shop was so unforgetable. Giving me chills right now.

#2 My first thunder game: I was unable to attend any games during the inaugural season. My first game i attended was against the Warriors in December 09. Harden came out big scoring 25 or 26...and Durant was himself, doing 28. Great experience!

#3 Game 4- My friend was able to snatch tickets up for game four as soon as they became available. he had 4 tickets, and i got to experience the complete beatdown of LA with 3 friends of mine. The whiteout, completely owning LA, KD driving on Gasol and Artest to slam it home. Absolutely flawless game.

#4- KD going for 45 against the warrior- this was my second game...and what does KD do? 45...nbd.

Thunder Up! Rise Together!

How I would love a picture like the one used for this post but large, panoramic and framed for my office.

I love the 8-0 run in Game 3, but don't overlook the 10-0 run in Game 6 even though we lost. After Westbrook got the and 1, ESPN showed the decibel level of the arena and how it was dangerous to be in there, which was awesome, especially since I thought we were headed to game 7

#1: That Thunder games became date nights for my wife and I and really helped us get to know eachother again after a rough patch.

#2: Game 3. Strangers became best of friends. LA supporters were barely there. 8-0 run was ridiculous.

#3: Having the feeling of watching OU play in a National Championship game, or Big 12 Championship game during the last few Thunder games before they clinched, then again during all 6 playoff games. I love and hate the anxious, I might puke at any time but I can't turn away feeling.

#4: The game 6 standing ovation.

#5: Getting some awesome seats behind the Atlanta Hawks bench, watching a good game, and meeting Dominique Wilkins.

#6: When KD did all those interviews sticking up for OKC as a basketball town and telling anyone and everyone that this is where he wants to be, then changing his twitter name to KDThunderUp.

I'm sure there are about 50 billion I'm forgetting, but those stick out right now.

I was at the Utah game -- and none of the playoff games, sadly -- and watching KD put together a superstar-type run at the end of regulation in that game was special. How often to you get to see -- live -- a player reach the next level?

I'd also add the Jeff Green dunk over Smith in Atlanta on MLK day. It was a monster play, a monster game, and maybe the first time a lot of us started to think, "Maybe these guys aren't playing THAT far above their heads."

The KD tying 3 at the end of that game 3 run is undoubtedly #1 (and kudos to the broadcast team of that game for how quietly they called that sequence) but watching KD grow up in Utah was a special, special moment.

I am also a fan of the Utah OT game. Not because of the no call or its consequences, but because when I was watching it everyone in the restaurant banded together to cheer on our team.

That kind of game really captures the hearts of everyone watching. Plus Durant showed flashes of dominance in a close game situation.

Also, does anyone remember this amazing introduction to Air Congo?

Game 3...I think my ears are still ringing from it. :)

The shirts were only big if you're abnormally small.

All I've gotta say is.... Russell Westbrook is the man. I love that guy.

Even before I scrolled down to read beyond the header, I instantly thought of Game 3. It was THE COOLEST sporting moment I've ever been part of. (aside from beating Texas 65-14 in 2003. It was my last game w/ my dad before cancer effed up our world and it was pretty sweet to stick to The Horns one last time together. He would have loved to see us get The Thunder.)
Anyways...
Clinching in Dallas was nice. So was beating Orlando, Phoenix, Utah, Boston, and other playoff teams, also the MLK Day game @ Atlanta when Uncle Jeff went poster-stylee for the win, but game 3...WOW!
I remember just spilling my $6.00 beer all over my brother while hugging my mom and wife and screaming until my voice literally stopped working. It was really special.
Here's to many more of these moments, brother and sisters!
Cheers!!
GO THUNDER!!!

I went to the game in Charlotte. I took a sign that said "IBAKA" on it. Chewie pointed up to me twice, once before the game, and once coming out from halftime. That was really cool.

Not having been able to go to the playoff games, easily mine is the OT game against New York at the Garden. I sat next to a UT law student and it was amazing to see how quiet the Garden got after KD went on proverbial "FU" mode. I remember just looking at each other like "do you believe what we're watching right now?" It was even better because it was T-Mac's first game in a Knicks uni. KD just lit it up. Best game I've seen in person easily.

Game 3 was something I will never forget as long as I live. I found myself doing the same thing Nick Collison was doing, just looking around the arena with this odd look on my face and soaking it in. Also I high fived lots of random people in my section and lots more people who came out of bricktown bars to celebrate with us. I had an awful headache on the drive back to Tulsa and my ears were ringing 3 days later and didn't care one bit...totally worth it.

Bob :
for me personally the OT games in New York and Utah. Amazing.

I'd have to say that OT "no call on wrist slappage" debacle was the worst moment of the season. But then I guess OKC probably would have faced another squad in round 1 had they called the foul. I wonder if the playoff atmosphere would have been lessened had the Thunder faced someone other than Kobe.

game 3 intros stick in my mind as "wow we made it" and the crowd was so intense. what sticks out are the smiles on the players faces as they gazed around. they were happy to be home and wow how they rewarded us for two more at the FC

I was lucky enough to manage tickets to game 4 of the LA/OKC playoffs. We arrived right at tip off and I was apprehensive because we had pretty high up seats. However, I was extremely happy to find that the setup was much like Gallagher-Iba Arena (my college-OSU) to where you still felt right on top of the action even far up.

The fact that everyone was decked out in abnormally large white t-shirts and clapping until hands were nearly bleeding was amazing. I've been to some really good game. I was even in Chicago when the Jordan era was going on and I witnessed a few games there.. I think we got them beat!

I loved being apart of the absolute blowout that was Game 4. It was amazing. I'm looking forward to making MANY trips back next season!

@Royce Young

ya royce i agree... i cant believe i came doown from Rhode Island for those 2 games in OKC but it was one of the most special moments in my life.. it was just crazy... just crazy

Game three was the Greatest. Game. Ever. Unbelievable. I want to tell total strangers that I was there, but they wouldn't understand how electric it was.

But the most amazing time I had was when I cried at the end of Game 6. Not because I'm a child that can't stand losing, but because that standing ovation we gave the team was the most astounding, purest expression of joy and gratitude and it was amazing to share that with 18,000 people spontaneously.

I'm going to list two moments. First, there was a moment in game three when the crowd was going wild and Nick Collison was on court looking around in amazement just kind of taking it all in. It was beautiful to see the same joy and wonder that we were all feeling reflected in the players.

The second moment was the standing ovation at the end of game 6. I was so proud of our city at that moment. Nobody took a second to think about it, and even though we lost we showed out guys the love they deserved.

I remember the end of our last game when we gave it up for the team even though we lost. That moment makes me tear up when I think about it.
The next was game 3 our 1st ever playoff game & the excitement. It was so crazy.

Easily Game 3. Still the best single sporting event I've ever been to, and the 8-0 run was the loudest I've ever heard an arena, including Gallagher-Iba when OSU won the Big 12 title.

Hopefully the first of many wonderful Ford Center memories to come!

Game 3 was my all time favorite. I think we really came together as fans. Everyone wearing the huge shirts and screaming their heads off was awesome. Even surprising to the team.

My favorite moment from this season was having free court side seats (right behind the Thunder bench) with my sister to the Sixers game. Being that close to the floor, getting to meet some beautiful Thunder girls, free food and a much better beer selection (plus the prices were better) all added up to one amazing experience. Oh and we won so it was that much better. Also wore my soon to be brother in law's DT NWA shirt. Pretty awesome experience. It was a tough choice between that, the game 3 8-0 run, and game 6. Even though we lost, the emotion in that stadium will be something I will never forget.

The OT game in MSG was the only OKC game I got to attend this year and it did not disappoint. One of the better regular season games I've attended recently... the NY crowd was great especially with the McGrady buzz and when Durant sucked the air out of the building with the three pointer, man.

Jonathan :J.G. you pretty much summed up my exact feelings from that game, as well as 18000 other fans I’m sure. After the 8-0 run when they called the foul, I remember everyone kind of looking around in amazement, like did that just happen, not just the play on the court, but the sheer madness that was Loud City. During the 4th quarter timeout I was about to pass out and literally sprinted to the concession stand to get water, and I think I was the only person in the concourse area. My ears hurt for three days afterwards, and I didn’t complain once. I’m pretty sure I bragged about it. Any ideas I had about moving out of the OKC area after finishing school completely vanished as there’s no way I could go without Thunder basketball

I'd like to add that my voice was not 100% after that game for 2 solid weeks. Not exagerrating, 2 weeks. To the point where I feared that I had done irreparable damage to my vocal chords.

well, OTHER than Game 3, it was actually going to the preseason game up here in Tulsa. I was just 2 rows behind the Thunder bench. It was unbelievably cool to see my boys that up-close and personal.

I showed up as early as I could to watch the warm-ups and shoot around. Those guys have so much fun just hanging out and ballin and being goofy. They're great.

Next to that, was probably a game against Utah when Collison (my first favorite Thunder) hit a couple of clutch free throws to ice a game for us. It was a pretty big game at the time and for me, it pushed me over the edge into full-blown thunder fever...

Game 3 was probably the craziest experience of my life. There were so many times where I had to stop and just look around and take it all in. It was insane!

I get chills every single time I watch the 8-0. Even upon the third or fourth consecutive viewing. Never gets old.

for me personally the OT games in New York and Utah. Amazing.

i get goose bumps watching that sequence even now. I get goosebumps just reading about that sequence. That was easily my favorite moment.
