Peace, Love and Thunderstanding: Who Wants NEXT?

Barring an historic collapse, Oklahoma City is going to taste some playoff basketball this year.  (edit. Which reminds me, buy a t-shirt.)  With all teams having approximately nine games remaining, the only way the first team out in the Western Conference picture, currently Memphis, overcomes the Thunder is if OKC loses all nine and the Grizz go perfect.  As the Tree and Leaf shirt proclaims, “NEXT is now!”

Less clear at the moment, what the seeding will be for the Thunder.  While it is still theoretically possible for the good guys to move into the upper half of the seeding and get a first round home court advantage, it is more likely that Oklahoma City winds up somewhere between five and eight (where the teams are virtually deadlocked right now).

So who should they want to play?  Here are the likely possibilities:

  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Dallas Mavericks
  • Utah Jazz
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Denver Nuggets

Why the Lakers would be a good matchup:

The defending champs have looked invincible a good portion of the season, but lately they have been a pedestrian team.  Kobe has been so frustrated by his team’s play that the sullen teenager expression that was perpetually on his mug post-Shaq/pre-Pau has returned.  When Kobe is unhappy, he is as much a clubhouse cancer as he is an elite player.  This means, team chemistry in Lakerland is awful as the playoffs approach.  Factor in that the Thunder demolished L.A. in their most recent encounter, and Oklahoma City would be heading into the pairing with high confidence.

From a match-up standpoint, the Thunder have a huge advantage at the point guard position.  Derek Fisher is a cagey veteran, but in his prime, he couldn’t stay in front of Russell Westbrook.  And the Thunder struggle most when the opposing team has a point guard who can attack Westbrook.  Fisher, who is basically nothing more than a jump shooter now, does not fit that category.

If playing the Lakers, Thabo Sefolosha is a huge asset as a guy who has frustrated Kobe in every meeting.  As I mentioned before, a frustrated Kobe is a horrible liability for the Lake Show.

Why shouldn’t the Thunder want to play the Lakers:

Outside of the point, the match ups are less advantageous.  Assuming Andrew Bynum returns for the playoffs, the Lakers’ stable of big men will test the Thunder’s lack of depth in the post.  Between Pau Gasol and Bynum playing volleyball at the rim, the Thunder will be relying on Serge Ibaka to make the leap on the biggest stage.  I’m not saying Serge, who hasn’t been intimidated yet this season, can’t rise to the challenge, but it is a lot to ask of a rookie.

Even the small forward pairing is not perfect for Oklahoma City.  Kevin Durant is the consensus runner up for MVP, but Los Angeles possesses a defensive stopper in Ron Artest, who will clutch and grab KD for thirty minutes a game.  The big and physical Artest could certainly wear down the Thunder’s scoring machine when they play consecutively for over a week.

Then, of course, there’s the whole thing of Kobe Bryant being one of the best to ever play the game.

Why the Mavericks would be a good matchup:

Like the Lakers, the point guard pairing is in the Thunder’s favor.  Jason Kidd is one of the best ever, but he lost his knees long ago, and he struggles against quick point guards.  Westbrook is among the quickest at the position.  That means the Thunder floor general should be able to score at will on the Mavs.  Meanwhile, Kidd’s lost step means that Russell should be able to keep him contained.

Why shouldn’t the Thunder want to play the Mavericks:

Dallas is one of the hottest teams in the NBA.  Since they exchanged Josh Howard for Caron Butler, a trade I underestimated, they have been practically unstoppable.

Shawn Marion’s defensive technique frustrates Kevin Durant.

Brendan Haywood really has the Thunder’s number.

Dirk Nowitzki.  ‘Nuff said.

——

Why the Jazz would be a good match up:

Scoreboard.  Oklahoma City has basically dominated Utah this season in winning all three games thus far with a fourth coming soon.

Carlos Boozer cannot hope to guard Jeff Green who is much quicker than the lead-footed power forward.

Jazz center Mehmet Okur is a very similar player to Nenad Krstic, so Krstic’s lack of a post game would not be a factor.

If the Jazz want to use Andrei Kirilenko to slow down Kevin Durant, that means Kililenko has to play on the offensive end, too.

Why shouldn’t they want to play the Jazz:

Deron Williams, on paper, is the better point guard.

Carlos Boozer is tough to guard.

——

Why the Suns would be a good match up:

If there is any opponent that would give the Thunder an advantage in the front court, this is the one.

Steve Nash can’t guard Russell Westbrook.

The Suns have no one who can hope to contain Kevin Durant.

Why shouldn’t they want to play the Suns:

They are currently on a nine game winning streak meaning they are peaking at the right time.

Amar’e Stoudemire can be a one man wrecking crew on the offensive end, so whoever guards him, probably Jeff Green, would likely be fighting foul trouble every game.

Goran Dragic torched Russell Westbrook with Steve Nash out, so imagine what their star point guard will do.

——–

Why the Nuggets would be a good match up:

They have been struggling lately.

J.R. Smith can always be counted on to make bad decisions.

Why shouldn’t they want to play Denver:

Carmelo Anthony.

The sheer volume of tattoos is distracting.

Nene and Chris Andersen protect the rim with a vengeance.

Night after night of Aron Afflalo will test Durant’s patience.

Maybe it’s the altitude, but the Nuggets have been unbeatable at home.

Chauncey Billups is a championship tested leader.

J.R. Smith’s bad decisions sometimes lead to him dropping thirty on you.

———–

I would rank the possibilities this way (best to worst match up):

1.  Utah Jazz

2.  Phoenix Suns

3.  Los Angeles Lakers

4.  Dallas Mavericks

5.  Denver Nuggets

Boston is calling for a Peace, Love and Thunderstanding OKC t shirt with a thunder bolt on the front and a jersey number on the back... can we get this made?

Hate to say it, but Denver isn't as dangerous a matchup for the first round as they would have been two months ago because of George Karl's illness. They've clearly lost focus, and rightly so. The Lakers are the only team that could sweep us, but only if they get their act together. I think anyone else we make a series out of it, but it goes the distance.

Petro has the basketball IQ of a rock.

Completely OT, but Johan Petro is really, really bad.. Denver is going to have a hard time winning any series in the playoffs if he plays significant minutes.. Juwan Howard is schooling him at the moment.

Well - any matchup at all is fine with me. Given we might actually go deeper than first round: what first round might give us a non-Lakers second round?

@AC

all good points it looks like everyone else has ignored you lol

The best part about it is he's shooting fairly good percentages from just about everywhere except at the rim. He's only shooting 59.4% at the rim which seems a bit low for a player like Serge. I had real doubts about his offensive game earlier in the year but he's really coming around. Hopefully he can learn to become more involved in the offense, passing the ball, maybe have some set plays run for him / post isolations next season. The only thing he doesn't seem to have is a ball handling ability and fluidity with the ball; not sure if he'll ever be that kind of player.

I'm actually more excited for Serge's development at this point than Harden's.. and I'm a big Harden supporter.

@justin
yeah he has a jumpshot that goes straight up with a high release point, he is basically unblockable like dirk

Serge Ibaka since the All Star break (22 games):

7.4 P/G
58.7% FG / 59.8% TS
5.7 R/G
1.7 B/G
19.8 minutes

He's been great. His FG% in particular is extremely encouraging.

@RedDirt717
With Hollinger, we made it to the finals, and lost to the cavs.

@RedDirt717
cool, my 1st try had spurs over bulls in the finals.

Suns
Jazz
Mavs
Nugs
Lakers

Agree w/ Justin & MastrMatt

@Clark Matthews
I agree that Westbrook has played very well vs. Williams this season, but even in those matches the point guard battle was pretty much a wash. Taking the other 70+ games into account, it's undeniable that Williams is the superior player.

@justin

I think "on paper" was very necessary. Your analysis makes a lot of sense, but it hasn't panned out that way in their head-to-head match ups this season. Hence, "on paper."

I kid you not, first try:

tomorrow night will be big in determining our playoff readiness, if we can win in dallas then nobody expect the lakers scare me. We have been playing well the last 2 weeks, even the losses to portland and san antonio we were not outclasses, and the boston win showed we can win on the road against a veteran team.

the nuggets without martin and george karl have been playing poorly and they probably wont be back for the playoffs, I think they continue their slide and lose 5 of their remaining 7. Getting beaten by portland, us, lakers, spurs and suns. (50-32)

Dallas is also sliding and i feel they lose to the magic, us, portland and spurs. (53-29)

Utah has been hot I say they lose to the lakers. (55-29)

Suns have played well but not on the road, so they lose to bucks, us, jazz. (53-29)

Portland has an easy home friendly schedule. They lose to the lakers (52-30)

Spurs have a rough schedule, lose to orlando, LA, suns, memphis(49-33)

Thunder lose to utah and portland (52-30)

so matchups are
1 Lakers vs 8 spurs
2 utah vs 7 nuggets
3 dallas vs 6 thunder
4 suns vs 5 blazers

@Omar
yeah except for the fact that there are western conference teams farther east then we are.

@Sammy

The thing about Nash / Stoudemire is, in Nash's case, how much does he stay on the floor? Deron Williams will play 40+ minutes every night in the playoffs, will Nash even play 35? Will he hold up?

I don't think our defense does that much better against Utah and I think our offense would be much more effective against Phoenix..

@Sammy

Those would be the issues and why I'd take DWil over CP3. CP3 is injured and who knows how he'll bounce back with a squeaky wheel.

I don't know if Denver should be 5 with K-Mart out and the way they've been playing... They have looked much more beatable as of late.

@MastrMatt
CP3 is clearly better than Williams when healthy. The issue is staying healthy.

@justin

Dude. Your negative stuff ususally gets on my never, but I gotta agree. DWil is probably the best point guard in the league. I love Chris Paul, but I think I might take DWil over even him. I hate that your negative-nelly butt is right, but it is.

I think objectively Dallas is the worst team in the top five, but Marion has been so effective on Durant that I think I'd rather not play them.

Doc Rivers said something yesterday that I hadn't thought about before and which gives me hope: no matter who the Thunder draw, we are going to have the best player on the floor.

Nash and Stoudemire would rape us in a 7 game series, but conversely Durant and Westbrook would be allowed to do pretty much anything they want offensively, a scenario that would not be true in any of the other potential matchups. Williams/Boozer isn't as potent a combo offensively as Nash/Stoudemire but would the Jazz defense adequately compensate? It's an open question. Both teams are playing gangbusters right now. I think I'd rather play the Jazz because if we lose a gunfight against the Suns, I don't know how much we learn about this team's playoff potential; a grind it out series vs the Jazz would provide the Thunder and its fans a better measuring stick.

I would like to move OKC into the eastern conference. Whose with me?

This next game will help determine if I'm right or not, but I can't help but think Dallas is a good matchup for us.

It's hard to say if the Lakers can get it together somehow. Denver is falling apart. It would be interesting if the lower seed won every matchup in the first round. I don't think it's impossible, especially if Denver somehow hangs on to the 4 seed. Then Lakers, Dallas, Denver, Utah on top, SA, PHX, PDX, OKC on bottom. The 5 teams playing best lately are the 4 bottoms and Utah.

Further, I think Williams will destroy Westbrook on both ends in a playoff series. He's a very strong defender. I think Russ has much more of a chance at making a scoring impact on the game (which we'd need) against Phoenix.

I'd rather play Phoenix than Utah, now that I think about it. Utah has Jerry Sloan, don't forget that. Also, is the "on paper" really necessary in that Deron Williams sentence?

Williams and Boozer scares me more than Stoudemire and Nash against our defense. I think we can deny the ball more successfully in Phoenix's case because they don't move the ball nearly as well as Utah, who are probably the best team in that regard. Also, Boozer's not All Defense but I'm inclined to say the Jazz play much better team defense than the Suns, the Suns winning streak notwithstanding.

I think our chances against either Dallas or LAL in a first round playoff series are slim to none. Denver will be tough because we don't match up well, I'd give us a 20% chance to win that seies. I think we have a decent chance of beating either Utah or Phoenix, though.

I've been trying to make sense of it for the last five minutes and I really just can't. It's bothering me way too much.

ummmm.... I don't mean to be a negative nancy like a lot of people in the comments, but I feel like this was written two weeks ago.

1) Denver doesn't have K mart and is slipping hard. Very hard. Lost 4 of last 5. Not at all impressive.

2) Dallas is 15 in Hollinger's power rankings, has lost some easy games lately, and its last impressive win (discounting the aforementioned Nuggs) was 1st of March (Charlotte).

3)Kirilenko actually has been playing really well this year. Over 50% FG%. But he's hurt. Which makes him a good thing, but for exactly the opposite reason that is listed here. It doesn't make sense to me.

I'd really rather play the Mavs than the Lakers, but otherwise, I'll agree. If the Jazz clinch the two, and we go into the Memphis game needing a win for the 6th seed or a loss for the seventh seed, do we tank?
